"My Little Pony and the Country Fair", 1984

My Little Pony initially didn't have any backstory whatsoever (in the same way that a rubber duckie wouldn't have a backstory) and gradually gained lore establishing that the ponies were intelligent beings who lived in a fantasy world "over the rainbow" from ours, where children like Megan could visit them.

In the very first coloring books the ponies can't even talk, they live on a farm and they are cared for like real horses. There's even a page that's like "Blossom watches while the children muck out her stall."

So this early book (from the 2nd year of MLP) is in an interesting transitional phase: the ponies are intelligent, independent, and go on fair rides, but they live on Earth and that is normal to all the townsfolk.

I also like how the early books emphasize how impressive it is that Firefly and Medley can fly.
