Zine! I Have Finally Figured It Out!
Tinkering around with my BRP Design Challenge entries.
I think I know what direction to take my BRP Design Challenge entry now. Taking this thing down to an A5 sized zine is going to help on so many levels. Plus it will buy me some much needed time to finish the original and knock out the second entry. If I spread my original idea out over six Black & White volumes it’s going to accomplish more and cost less than the original 256 standard 8”x11”…

BRP Finalists Announced.
I received an email on the 12th letting me know that I was one of 185 lucky denizens of the rejected pile of Chaosium's Basic RolePlaying Design Challenge. Congratulations to all the winners. Lots of cool stuff there.
Alas, my name is not on the list. Congratulations to all the winners. There are some fascinating looking games here, to be certain. I’m looking forward to seeing some of them when they launch. Please visit the Chaosium blog and vote for your favorite! My entry is still in my notes. I’m probably going to repurpose it and publish the thing elsewhere, likely under a simpler system. I like BRP, but…

20 Days Remaining.
I'm still trying to work on my BRP Design Challenge entry. It's not always easy. I had to look it up. Apparently there's this thing called "sleep" that people actually do. Hmm. I'll have to look into it.
The Deadline for the BRP Design Challenge draws ever closer. Here’s the link again. I probably won’t stop talking about it until everything is said and done. It’s a great contest and a good system to be working with. BRP: Universal Game Engine has the benefit of being incredibly well playtested over decades of Pendragon, Call of Cthulhu, and Runequest. The game is fairly intuitive if one has…

Long Day
Please consider supporting the site on Ko-Fi if you can. I've had a long day. Lots going on. Going to go sleep for a few hours now. Thank you for being here.
Yup. I got to play single parent today. I’ll be really glad when my wife returns tomorrow. I’m wiped. You don’t realize how much someone contributes until they go out of town for a day. Oof. I need to get rolling on my BRP Design Challenge submission. Deadline is coming up faster than I realized. So much to cover yet. I think I can safely say I’m just putting in the one submission. Disclaimer:…

May Day
Lots of stuff to talk about now that the First day of May is upon us. I've got multiple irons in the fire, the most important being Chaosium's BRP Design Challenge. I'm immersed in the event, but I'm woefully behind schedule at the moment.
Ah, the First of May. This is going to be pretty short because I need to get rolling on my BRP Design Challenge submission. I’m still working on the first one and I don’t know if there’s going to be a second one at this point. I’ve got to get a lot of what’s in my head down onto the keyboard before I’m finished. Disclaimer: Statements expressed in this article are strictly my opinion. If you…

Basic RolePlaying: Universal Game Engine Design Challenge Rolls On.
One month left until the deadline for Chaosium's Basic RolePlaying: Universal Game Engine Design Challenge. I'm starting to feel the time crunch.
The May 31 deadline for entries rapidly approaches. Today is the first day I really started freaking out about the deadline. Putting together pitches, budget, manuscript, and other details honestly looks easy on paper. I’ve definitely been learning a lot during this process so far. The biggest challenge I face today is getting from this neato idea that’s been running around in my head for years…

Working Weekends.
Putting in lots of work on my entry for the Basic RolePlaying Design Challenge. I'm happy and grateful that Chaosium has extended this opportunity to all of us.
I never thought I’d say it, but weekends are for writing. I’m working on my BRP Design Challenge entry. Sometimes I have to choose between blogging and working on the game. This BRP entry is so much fun to work on and I’m dying to say more, but it’s probably best not to do so before the judging ends. If you’re working on an entry of your own, I wish you luck. If you haven’t heard of it yet, you…

Freedom Day April 2024 Edition.
Glad to be free of the [REDACTED] corporate overlords' control and free to live my life's purpose. Embracing the joy that is the BRP Design Challenge today.
Who’d have imagined back on July 19, 2021, we’d be here? I’m incredibly happy and grateful for being here right now. When I was released from [REDACTED] corporation all those years back, I was incredibly sad and very worried about what the future would hold. I was also glad to be out of that 🦆🦆🦆🦆 job and closer to my life’s purpose than ever.   My intention was always to have peace, freedom to…

Basic Roleplaying Design Challenge: Getting The Most Out of Your Setting
Chaosium's Jason Durall talks about the BRP Design Challenge and some of his work at Chaosium. It's a good watch.
Jason Durall from Chaosium talked about what he does at Chaosium and about the BRP Design Challenge. I never get tired of talking about the Basic RolePlaying: Universal Game Engine Design Challenge. I think this is one of the best opportunities to come along in years. I highly encourage everyone to watch the video. Lots of good advice there. Thank you for being here today with me. I appreciate…

What is a TableTop RolePlaying Game (TTRPG?)
I'm debating whether or not to include the "What is a RolePlaying Game and What are all these funny dice?" Questions in my new game.
I was working on my game last night and the age old question came up. “But it’s not what you think,” to quote one of my favorite YouTube channels. The question isn’t “What is a roleplaying game.” The question becomes, “Do I include that description in my game?” Do I just assume people know what a TTRPG is by this point? I mean, we have the Internet. People can look it up.The same question can…

Chaosium BRP Design Challenge Still Going.
Originally I had planned to just say a few short words about Chaosium's Basic RolePlaying: Universal Game Engine Design Challenge. Turns out I have a lot of say about the subject. Enjoy.
My efforts continue. Confession time. I thought this was going to be a lot easier at first blush than it has turned out to be. I’m still going strong. I’m still going to at least have one if not two proposals done under deadline. My plan was to pull out one of my many, many system agnostic campaign worlds and just plug the Basic Roleplaying: The Universal Engine system into it. That seemed…

Have a Great Day!
Hey all. Just a quick note to let you know I'm thinking of you all. You rock. Keep being awesome.
Please come join in the fun. Come join us! https://www.chaosium.com/blogthe-basic-roleplaying-design-challenge/ I’ve had kind of a long day in my personal life. I’m physically and mentally running low on spoons and I have another day ahead that’s going to be challenging. I also have great deal of writing to do in the next few days if I want this BRP Design Challenge entry to be awesome. So much…

What Did Medieval Fantasy Look Like Before Tolkien?
Redefining fantasy as a genre by looking at stories and storytelling traditions before Tolkien, Howard, and Lovecraft. Not every fantasy game has to feature dungeons and/or dragons.
The roots of modern TTRPGs go deeper than Lord of the Rings. We know imitation is the highest form of flattery which is why early Dungeons & Dragons looked like Lord of the Rings. There are also scores of TTRPGs based on LotR and adjacent to it. Likewise we have dozens of Conan games and Conan adjacent fantasy TTRPGs. What were people reading before Tolkien and Robert E. Howard produced epic…

BRP Design Challenge April’s Entry.
Hey, we're back to talk about more BRP Design Challenge ideas today. I think I've stumbled onto a way to do High Fantasy that appeals to me.
I might be getting ambitious, but I’m trying for two entries. April’s Entry is going to be (no real spoilers) a high fantasy crossover with two other genres. I’m going a little stir crazy on this one because I really didn’t want to do high fantasy as I have mentioned before. I feel like there are so many other games on the market, especially in 2024-2025, that are fantasy or fantasy adjacent…
