“Sharon Lin is not your typical 18-year-old.

A freshman at MIT, Lin helped develop an Android app while interning at the US State Department. She's this year's Youth Poet Laureate in New York City. And She was named to Crain's 20 under 20 list.

She's also prospective entrepreneur who's CEO of her own company. And in that role, she could help reshape the tech industry and possibly change the world, if a recent contest is any indication.

Lin won the annual #BuiltByGirls startup challenge and its $10,000 prize. She was recognized for an app she developing to help impoverished communities around the world cheaply and easily find out whether their water supplies are contaminated with harmful bacteria.

"You only have to look at the finalists of the #BuiltByGirls Challenge ... to know that the future is in good hands," said Nisha Dua, the founder of #BuiltByGirls, the organization behind the contest.”

Being a part of the WAVE program has helped me to learn more about the tech fields that I am interested in and meet other mentees who also have a strong interest in pursuing STEAM. I also got to meet amazing mentors like Shiloh 💕(@shilohnoelle) who were very supportive in helping me reach my goals for the program. My most memorable sessions are with Shiloh where we just talked about food, tv shows, and other things we loved along with career discussions as well as other times where she took me to other companies to explore different work fields. Refinery29 x #BUILTBYGIRLS

#BUILTBYGIRLS is an organization that aims to get more young women interested and involved in tech-focused industries. This year, Refinery29 signed on as a #BBG advisor partner in which a dozen members of our P&E team are mentoring teenage #BBG members in 1-1 sessions, introducing them to various career opportunities in tech.

In addition to the mentor program, yesterday we hosted 50 #BUILTBYGIRLS members for a “Tech of Lifestyle” hashtag event at our office.

The event kicked off with a panel discussion with 3 members of our engineering team (Cara Warner, Nicole Pikulin, and Stasha Rosen) followed by a challenge activity in which our guests were asked to brainstorm technology-led solutions for how Refinery29 could provide personalized experiences for our users. 

Not surprisingly, our guests came up with some truly brilliant ideas like content recommendations based on cookie data, social media likes, R29 editors you “follow”, the ability to customize the categories in the site nav, and even content suggestions based on the time of day (eg: R29 makeup tutorials in the morning, recipes in the evening).

One of my concerns when I started working at Amazon was if I can make a social impact. My story on leaving tech and going the non profit route, I felt I was living in two disparate worlds. One gave me meaning (but in reality, it wasn't what I expected in aligning my personal values (big surprise)) and the other offered a good lifestyle but lacked meaning. What I'm finding is that I was wrong. I feel I can do a lot more within STEM than from outside. Case in point, this mentorship program I am part of and got matched. Incredibly talented girls that I get to know and I have my first advisee. Her name is Anushka (how cool is that?!! Same name as my niece) and I meet her next week. What I'm saying here is that, I'm overjoyed to be part of WAVE and #builtbygirls!! They rock!!! Thank you Amazon - I now get to do both!!! #Neversettle. (at Amazon.com SEA33 - Blackfoot)
