Is there any reason that McLaren don't make their own engines, I think I've seen before that it's because of cost, but they've been in the sport for a long time so I would think at some point they'd begin to produce their own engines instead? Every other top team does their own(and Aston Martin is moving to Honda in 2026 as well) making them the only top 5 team to not make their own engines during 2026, and with smaller teams it's understandable but I just find it odd for McLaren.

This is a good question. I think the most helpful way to illuminate the answer is to go through a quick version of McLaren's history, compared to when the current engine-building teams started doing their own engines. Timeline under the "Keep Reading".

(1950) - Ferrari started building its own engine. This was before not building one's own engine for own's own chassis was a meaningful option. Ferrari had three good reasons not to consider buying in an engine: post-war austerity was still a thing, it had a point to prove to Lancia from whom it had recently separated - and Ferrari considered the engine to be the heart of the car, thus the heart of the team's identity. No other team in existence in 2025 gave itself the latter reason to build its own F1 engine. (1954) - Mercedes spends 2 years in F1, building everything itself (as it had pre-war), dominated everything in the Grand Prix world, then left in the wake of the 1955 Le Mans disaster. Again, buying an engine in was not a meaningful option, but in this case it was more to do with its ambitions to dominate immediately, rather than Ferrari's "buying in a different engine would have probably been more hassle". 1966 - McLaren entered F1. This was the year before the Ford DFV entered F1. This was the engine that made not building one's own engine not only viable, but a credible path to the Constructor's World Championship title. Even though Bruce McLaren knew that Lotus had an exclusive on the engine in its debut year (1967), he knew Ford had decided that it would be openly and broadly available after that, for considerably less than the likes of Ferrari paid to develop their own engine. Not having the baggage of an existing commitment to produce its own engine, McLaren chose to use the Ford DFV for most of its early F1 adventures (there were some races where it used Serenissima and BRM engines instead). 1981 - Ron Dennis bought McLaren and decided to beef up the operation. However, McLaren wasn't exactly rich at this point (lack of money was why the team had been sold…) so making its own supply wasn't really an option. However, the engine situation wasn't exactly a rush because the Ford DFV's 1981 iteration was still capable in the midfield context McLaren had found itself. Instead, Ron carefully negotiated for a works arrangement with a manufacturer who he believed would conquer the turbo era - Porsche. Works agreements were just starting to become a thing among the British teams, primarily because of doubts about whether Ford could be as successful with turbos as it had been with naturally-aspirated engines (the Ford DFV being the naturally-aspirated engine par excellence). Turbos were far more expensive than naturally-aspirated ones, since the science was more complex. This brought the larger-budgeted manufacturers into play - the Renaults, TAG Porsches and Ferraris of the world. (Ford is a huge company who could have outspent all at this point had it chosen, but was always interested in making their motorsport efforts look affordable. That was as much a part of their image as luxury is intended to be for Ferrari and Aston Martin). However, these luxury manufacturers also wanted a certain air of unattainability, which could not happen if everyone picked the same luxury manufacturer. So engine manufacturers looked to commit to a single team, one it could be confident would sustain itself through intense competition for several seasons, and recoup its upfront investment over a fairly long contract. If the Ford DFV had been a PC, the turbo engines were already looking like they would be consoles - walled garden included. So for a few years in the mid-1980s, McLaren were strongly allied with Porsche. And then���

1987 - TAG Porsche decided it wanted out of F1. Sportscar racing had become big, without yet being as expensive as F1, and Porsche wanted to concentrate on the cheaper (but also growing) series. Ron Dennis might have considered building his own engine for half a second - by now, McLaren was rich and secure enough to think about it - but an idea crossed his desk that was far more compelling. McLaren joined forces with Honda, to produce the most one-sided season ever. (Even 2023 wasn't quite as one-sided. Red Bull lost Singapore on pace. McLaren lost the 1988 Italian Grand Prix only because both cars broke down from the lead). This was, at least at first, the best possible deal Ron Dennis could have done. 1993 - Honda's presence ended as the recession of 1991 took hold. Without other options, Ron Dennis selected Ford, then Peugeot, but neither felt like a long-term option for his ambitions. He was looking for another works supplier. With medium-term doubt about what engines were going to look like, it would have been a bad time to go into the engine creation business. Instead, McLaren chose to ally with Mercedes in 1995. Except for its legendary McLaren F1 GTR car (that eventually won Le Mans), where it used a BMW engine. (2010) - Mercedes re-entered F1. Two reasons to build its own engine: its own historical precedent, and a need to retrench a bunch of engine experts laid off in the 2008 recession to avoid having to make them redundant. Unlike McLaren in 2020, Mercedes had enough internal corporate financial backing to pull this off. 2014 - Ron Dennis took over McLaren again just as F1 was entering a mini-recession (not so much the consequence of wider market forces this time, more to do with objections to F1's ethics - Bahrain 2012 was still fresh in executives' memories - and decreasing confidence in the solvency of F1 teams, half of whom either actually or nearly went bankrupt in 2014 and early 2015). McLaren was absolutely not in a position to financially consider building the extremely expensive eco-turbos itself, so it was a search for another works supplier. Honda was the only team willing to accept McLaren at short notice, for a number of reasons. It was an unhappy union. However, the only alternative was to share a supplier with at least one other team - something to which Ron Dennis was very much opposed for philosophical reasons (mostly concerned about whether defeating the supplier would be allowed). (2016) - Lotus renamed itself to Renault due to the road company buying it. The alternative was for the team to cease to exist. Renault brought in its own vision. This included building its own engines - partly due to history and partly philosophy. It had, at this point, a lot more money to throw at an engine-building project than McLaren. 2018 - McLaren dumped Honda when it could, trading it in for a better version - Renault. Still too expensive to make its own ecoturbo, still no other manufacturers interested in joining, so a shared supplier was the only possible route. 2022 - McLaren had to change supplier, this time because Renault wanted to focus on its own team. By this point, Mercedes had shown it could accept other teams beating it with good grace (notably at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, where Perez and Racing Point defeated Russell's Mercedes, with both giving excellent perofrmances). This reassured McLaren that a deal with Mercedes was as good as a works arrangement. McLaren has little reason to seek making its own engine, given its current context. If matters were different and it could afford to do so, McLaren would consider making its own engine. However, each time McLaren has had to seriously consider anything other than the supplier it currently has, there's always been an arrangement that worked better for it.

There are of course the inferences that can be made from that letter she got sent (and more specifically that it was turned over unopened) but is/was she in the public eye? WHO IS CASSANDRA WHITE?

So, my long term followers all know about my hilariously derailed profile of Constructor assigned shortly before the stadium incident. I’ve kept you all abreast of the many, many delays related to high security super prisons and then my subject running off to start a supervillain career. Because of course, the second I get assigned this extremely exciting personality piece, Constructor becomes completely unreachable.

Alright, well, you might not believe me, but Constructor's manager/agent turned out to be even harder to reach.

At the time, I decided to take the "Frank Sinatra Has a Cold" approach and paint a portrait of Constructor based on the testimonies of coworkers, friends and family. I then found out that I could get testimonies from construction workers and urban planners about what the hero was like to work with (largely positive, if saddened by the recent turn of events) but nothing on what this incredibly beloved figure was like as a friend or family member.

The one thing I kept hearing from everyone was "Cassandra White would know more. The two of them seemed really close."

Now there was a problem: I couldn't find out who the fuck Cassandra White was.

It turns out Cassandra White was Constructor’s agent. I try to look her up online and? Nothing. No facebook profile, no personal website, not even a LinkedIn. 

That has to be odd for someone who works in PR, right?

I do a little searching to find the agents of other superheroes. I contacted one, and got an interview. I've lost the thread of trying to piece together Constructor's life but I'm curious dammit. I mention the issue I've had with finding her anywhere. He nods his head while I explain the wild goose chase I've been on.

"Well, White is a whole other ballgame," he says. "She took her privacy seriously, and I'm also pretty sure she scrubbed a lot of her history. She was meticulous about records--knowing names in media, tech, and various public archives who could help you scrub a dumb tweet before it snowballed into a PR crisis for your client."

"You can get rid of internet records?"

"Well, not easily. And not after people realize they're important, that's for sure," he said. "I once told her things on the internet are forever. She said, 'No. If people pay attention, then they're forever. But if no one cares in the first place, then it never existed at all.'"

"So there was a process she used to make sure people's images stayed clean," I said, "And she used the same process to make herself a ghost?"

"I imagine so. I mean, she's retired from being an agent and has her fingers in all sorts of other pies these days. Businesses, investments, politics. Plus, I imagine becoming a billionaire or whatever has made her priorities shift."

Billionaire. I think I almost choked on my coffee. "You can become a billionaire from being a PR agent?"

"You can't," he said. "But White did."

(poking head in) The Whole Foods place? Oy, isn't that where that old chick you're stalking has a house?

 ....wait a minute, I remember this. "Sandy" right? Your mom? The one who turned you into the FBI?

(Judgmental) You act all woke and then you go and try to be friends a racist who lives in the Whole Foods district.

She's not a--That's not what the fight--this is why I went alone!

This conversation afforded me with a lot of more information which I am saving for a piece on the lives of superhero PR agents, which I am now utterly fascinated by. Regarding Cassandra White, the other significant info it afforded me was that Cassandra White does in fact have a twitter account that I missed in my earlier search.

I looked into it. It's the most inoffensive twitter account I've ever seen. It feels like it was generated on a factory belt. There is a headshot of an older white woman--Cassandra White herself, it seems--as the profile pic. She tweets very rarely herself, and instead seems to mostly retweet news updates and positive platitudes or quotes from historical figures. The tweets she does make are all of an extremely inoffensive liberal variety, with the spiciest being one gentle snipe at the Republican party.

There is one other hint of her personality on this twitter. It’s an unexpected photo from inside her home, one with a quick caption that says she regularly uses a whiteboard to write out her resolutions and thoughts, and that she finds the process to clarify her goals and values. 

It reads:

IT WILL BE DONE QUIETLY.  IT WILL BE DONE CIVILLY.  IT WILL BE DONE RIGHT–OR IT WON’T BE DONE AT ALL.

(Grumbling and footsteps as people shuffle out, followed by writing noises.)

LETHE

CONSTRUCTOR

What? (Pause) You know what I'm doing.

LETHE

The last time you tried to deliver something….

CONSTRUCTOR

I'll send someone else to deliver it.

(More scribbling. Deep breath.)

LETHE

I lied. I read her mind. She doesn't care about you.

(Writing stops. After a slight pause, there is the sound of paper crinkling and Lethe gasps and steps back.)

LETHE

Don’t be mad at me!

CONSTRUCTOR 

(Deep, strained breath) I’m not mad. You're just wrong.

LETHE

I could literally read her mind!

CONSTRUCTOR

Okay, you're not wrong.  You're lying.

LETHE

What? I'm not!

CONSTRUCTOR

(Fuming) You think I'm an idiot just because I haven't been calling you out on it? Everyone here knows you lie about what your powers show you whenever it suits your purposes.

LETHE

(Wobbly) I--I don't have a reason to lie about this!

You don't have a reason that I know. But you are such a fucking liar. No one in the fortress trusts a thing you say, and you know it. 

LETHE

The twitter account confirms she exists and nothing else. I couldn't tell you what the woman thinks about anything. On a website people use to blast their opinions to the world at all hours, this one seems specifically built to deny the existence of any individual opinions or personality. 

I scrolled all the way back to the time period during which Constructor would have had the big public meltdown at the stadium. I used the wayback machine to see if there were any deleted tweets, just in case she said anything in a fit of frustration or grief and deleted it.

But during the time where she would have been watching Constructor's breakdown, a time when everyone in the world had something to say about what Constructor had done--nothing.

Cassandra White, Constructor's closest person, had nothing to say about them at all.

This is both a love letter and a retelling of @fakecrfan 's Constructor/Architect story, but set in my own superhero universe. She has a specific identity in this, as unfortunately, you can't really have the reader *be* the main character in a visual format, but I hope that's okay with you :)

My name is Na Su-Yung. Two years ago, I thought I was a normal person. Another mortal. Another drop in the ocean, looking up to the clouds. To the gods living amongst us. Until I found out that I'm nothing like the ocean around me. I was different. I was an Anomaly.

I was just a college kid in Cosmopolis, another normal human who was awestruck every time I saw The Guardsman zoom across the city, or see a news report of Nitrous' crime-fighting shenanigans in Sunset City, all the way on the other side of the U.S. Another fragile human being, merely made of flesh and bone and nothing else, that cheered each time The Vanguard came together to save the world.

When an attack on Cosmopolis by the villain Sergeant Steel destroyed the foundations of my apartment and others in my neighborhood, I thought I was gonna lose everything. That I was gonna die. I just accepted my fate as the floor began crumbling beneath me. To my surprise, however, it seemed that the entire building was frozen in time. I stopped it from falling. I gave other residents enough time to escape to a safer area. I was a hero, even if no one, not even I, knew what I had done.

I spent time exploring my abilities in my free time between lectures. I don't know why, but it took me months, nearly a year, to be able to control the same amount as I did when I first gained my powers. So I started small. I floated pebbles between my hands, then on a single hand, then I was able to attract them to my hands from a few meters away. For the first time in my 21 years of life, I didn't feel weak, or pathetic, or forgotten. For the first time, I felt like I could be more than myself. And so I did.

I'd go to places in Cosmopolis where Guardsman had recently done battle against one of his rogues. I'd studied architectural engineering thoroughly before going on my first outing, so I was able to reconstruct a lot of the buildings in a few weeks. Just the broad strokes, though. I couldn't get the electrical or water systems down, so I just left a lot of the buildings with hollow walls to let the actual electricians and plumbers do their work.

Still, no one gave a shit about me. I was just some rando in a washed-out CSU hoodie and sweatpants.

I eventually realized that I would probably be able to work better if I had the blueprints for the buildings. Just walking up to wherever they keep them and asking for them probably wouldn't work well, so I planned. Well, "planned" is glorifying it. I did the first thing that popped in my head: make a costume to get attention. And so I did.

I was never the artsy type, so I just bought a wetsuit and mask online. But it worked. After the metas had their fill of fighting, I'd arrive on the scene and start working. The bigger news reporters would keep their focus on Guardsman or Harddrive or whoever did the day-saving, but the smaller news organizations turned their focus to me. Knowledge of my presence was slowly increased, especially online. People on Reddit and Tumblr took to calling me either The Constructor or The Architect. I took up the latter.

One day, when even the larger news networks in Cosmopolis had turned their attention onto me, someone came up to me. She told me her name was Sandy and that she had a proposition. She'd be my manager, managing any relations or exchanges I don't have the time to deal with, and helping me with marketability. I took her up on her offer. She made me a new suit, talked to the city to get blueprints, and whatever else. It's been a while, I've forgotten a lot of what we did.

Hero teams contracted me to restore their headquarters, standalone heroes and vigilantes needed help with rebuilding their bases, cities wanted cheap labor. I did it all. I finally felt like I was contributing to society. That I mattered. I was finally told that I mattered. Until the day I chose to do what I knew was right.

Cosmopolis, despite what outsiders think it is, is just like any other city. One side of the city is covered in skyscrapers, the other in slums. Struggling people who can't escape their situations, whether that be out of discrimination, mental disabilities, mental illnesses, addiction, criminal affiliation, they all live with constant strife.

The worst part of it all, however, is that I'm just like everyone else. Every time I passed one on the street or from inside a cab, I looked away. Seeing them suffer under the city's hand tore out my soul. It didn't matter that my reasoning was different from those who averted their eyes out of spite or disgust, I still looked the other direction. I refused to be like them. To kick them while they're already down. So I started building them up, literally.

I'd scour throughout the city, look through sites listing run-down neighborhoods or buildings, and I'd go there. I'd tear them down and build them back up. I gave people places to stay, where they wouldn't go cold or without a bed for the night. I gave them the kindness that might help them stop simply surviving, and finally begin living.

Then the comments came. Middle and upper class began shouting their complaints online and in my face, whether personally or through a reporter. They hated seeing people, who they deemed "undesirable," getting any help. Giving some cash was already too much for them to handle, so I can see why they saw this in such a bad light. Why their hateful eyes had seen this as a sin.

I went to interviews and I kept trying to get my viewpoint out there. No one listened. No one cared. All they saw was filth getting help by more filth.

So I made shelters around the city in places no one would notice. Rooves out of land in the parks, more empathetic architecture. I removed the spikes underneath bridges that prevent people from getting shelter from the rain and made the benches softer for those who had no beds. But still, no one gave a shit. The city made laws against how much anyone could alter it. I gave up on that.

I was sent death threats. I was told that I was helping the scum grow. That I was making Cosmopolis shine less. It didn't help that Guardsman was comatose from a battle for nearly 6 months at that point. It meant I had no one, not even the hero of heroes, the embodiment of infinite kindness to everyone, to back me up. I was alone. I stopped everything. I pushed away everyone. I fired Sandy, apologizing every second of it. I basically disappeared from the face of the Earth.

Then I heard that they were building a stadium on the Southeast Side. Displacing hundreds of people. Their hope being snuffed out by the fat cats on the top of the totem pole. I wouldn't stand by it. I came as fast as I could and I tore it all down. Every beam and panel and every square inch was just rubble when I was finished.

M.I.R.A. was contacted after the cops weren't able to get me to stand down. They trapped me in an Akonite cell in Pandora's Box. The media labeled me as "a false hero," "a fallen angel," "a wolf in sheep's clothing," "a villain." I just wanted to make things better. With The Vanguard keeping their eyes on the larger threats, and each individual member focusing on the broad strokes that are their respective cities, there were barely any who were looking out for the little guy. That's all I wanted to be. The one to look out for the everyman, the people on the streets. My people. I wanted to take care of my neighbors, friends, and loved ones. But I guess all people care about are themselves.

I eventually found that Akonite didn't work on my powers. How or why, I don't know. Maybe it was because it was just another mineral. Maybe it just didn't have an effect on me. Either way, I knew that this wouldn't stop me. I'm The Architect. I'm a hero. I won't let corruption, greed, and cruelty hinder that. I'll dissent from the indifference. From the apathy. From the fear of helping my city.
