Fast Testimony Meeting (Like Fast and Testimony Meeting, but Very Fast)

Once a month, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints hold a special church meeting called "fast and testimony meeting." What this basically amounts to is a bunch of starving people staring at an empty pulpit for an hour.

On these Sundays, the leadership invites the members to share personal thoughts and convictions (their testimonies) about the church. When I went to these meetings with my parents, there would often be long bouts of awkward silence punctuated occasionally with shrieking banshee children and old people choking on their lungs. Now that I am in BYU territory, I am surrounded by single college students who war over the pulpit like frenzied piranhas. It's nigh impossible to get up there and say something.

Normally I am a mute hermit content to sit in the back of the chapel and simply listening to others get up and speak. However, yesterday I felt moved upon to speak words in front of dozens of people my age. I'd had some things I was thinking about and I wanted to share them.

The deluge of speakers never ended. My heart was pounding as I watched and waited for the pulpit to clear, but the other college kids were flying to the microphone like a group of tag team wrestlers trying to take down Chuck Norris. The room was sweltering. My (amazing) hat was rapidly evolving into a woolen sauna. I had even been writing what I wanted to say beforehand, a minor sin in regards to participating in fast and testimony meeting. We're supposed to stand up and speak only with prompting from the Holy Spirit. But my mouth and brain have, historically, been mortal enemies, and whenever I attempt to articulate A Thought™️ my tongue flops down like an unwilling child that my brain has to then drag limply along. It just doesn't work well.

Most of my friends had gone up. I was still sitting like a time bomb about to go off. It was five minutes until the meeting would be over. My eyes lasered onto the Bishopric, wondering when they might cut it off. I didn't want to be that person who went over the hour, but I felt like I had quite a few things to say. Too many things. In the end, I never stood up. Now I'm writing this blog post about it to make up for a small sense of failure on my part. It is what it is, though.

Jesus Christ the Savior lives and loves us. I am grateful every day for the support of having a connection to him. He has blessed me in more ways than I can fathom. Perhaps next month I'll get my shot in the gauntlet of college testimony meeting. Stay classy, fam.

BYU: 2022 New Mexico Bowl Champions

SMU scored a touchdown with 8 seconds left, but Jakob Robinson made an open field tackle on the ensuing two-point conversion as BYU held on in a 24-23 win in the New Mexico Bowl.

Sol-Jay Maiava started at QB in place for an injured Jaren Hall and led a steady ground attack for the Cougars. Maiava finished 7/12 for 47 yards passing, but led the BYU ground attack with 96 rushing on 14 carries and 1 TD. Senior Christopher Brooks complemented Sol-Jay with 88 rushing yards on 1 TD.

BYU had just 256 yards of total offense, and the defense stepped up to win the game. Ben Bywater had a pick six in the third quarter and BYU held SMU star QB Tanner Mordecai to just 218 passing yards.

BYU’s 8-5 season may have been overall disappointing, but BYU heads into a vital offseason with some momentum. BYU will be active in the transfer portal and have an offseason with a new defensive staff to retool the roster ahead of BYU’s Big 12 debut. BYU’s next game will be Saturday, September 2 at home versus new C-USA member Sam Houston.
