Croatia

I made a lot of stops in Croatia over the last week. I started in Zagreb, then Plitvice Lakes National Park, Split, Korcula, and finally Dubrovnik.

Sunday

I arrived super late to Zagreb to a hostel in what I would call a strip mall, but it was close to the bus station!

Monday

I went out to explore Zagreb. I walked to the city center, about a 45 minute walk from my hostel. About an hour later, I recognized two girls from my hostel, Renee (Dutch) and Annemarie (German), we ended up spending the rest of the day together exploring the city. We saw everything Zagreb Cathedral, the botanical gardens, to St. Mark's Church. We had lunch at a cafe, a very typical Croat thing to do. For the evening, we hung out at our hostel and made dinner and enjoyed a couple bottles of wine together with some other hostel-mates as well.

Tuesday

I decided to stay an extra day in Zagreb in order to spend a full day at Plitvice Lakes National Park the following day. So I started the day going to Zagreb Cemetary, which was massive and quite the hike from the city center. But lots of above ground grave sites with ornate tombstones. Then I went to the Museum of Broken Relationships. It was full of articles that people people had donated with a short story about the broken relationship. Everything from failed dating relationships to war-torn family members was covered.

Wednesday

I set off early for Plitvice Lakes National Park and arrived before 11am leaving just enough time to do a longer walk around the lakes. There was a timed ticket entry, but luckily someone at the hostel told me this so I spent my hour waiting to go in dropping off my luggage and eating breakfast. As soon as I was able to go in, I went in quickly, trying to beat the massive amounts of tourists. I saw the big waterfall and the upper lakes and managed to walk around the majority of the national park in under six hours. The last hour, I met a wonderful American couple. The husband was CFO for Sonic and is now the CEO of Cafe Rio, so we talked about all things "industry". We even shared a dislike for how crowded the park was and walked around tourists with a breeze. Then I caught a bus to Split!

Thursday

After some difficulty finding an unmarked hostel in the dark the night before, I spent the morning sleeping in. Then walked up to Marjan Hill, an excellent viewpoint over Split. Then I walked through the town, exploring the ruins that dominate the city center. I also bargain for a hat in the street shopping area, earning myself a new wonderful sun hat that I've proudly worn every day since. I spent the rest of the day at Bacvice Beach. There was a nice rocky area to jump off of (~20ft), which I successfully did.

Friday

I caught a ferry to the island of Korcula. Immediately after checking into my hostel, I met a kiwi who was leaving that afternoon, but first she introduced me to her two Scottish friends. The four of us hung out on the rocks before enjoying some ice cream and saying goodbye to Amy. Then the Scottish girls and I hung out at a beach for the entire afternoon. A short break to shower and we reconvened for dinner and to enjoy the cooler air along the water.

Saturday

I went to Port 9 beach for a couple hours before going back to the hostel for their lunch. It was nice having a home cooked meal and eating family style with the hostel volunteers. We ended up going for a swim after lunch across the Port 9 and then hanging on the rocks for a bit. All the sun and water had me ready for a nap though. After the nap I made some dinner and hung out with the guys some more by the hostel pool. After more and more people kept joining us, we started playing some games before we had to be silent on the patio. The guys left for the church to continue their evening and the girls hung out quietly at the hostel.

Sunday

I went into town to take some pictures early and get cash out to pay for the hostel. After the walk back, I picked up my bags and went to a beach for a couple hours to read before catching a bus to Dubrovnik. I got to Dubrovnik by evening and walked to the old town. It was super crowded but I captured some good pictures of the sunset.

Monday

I went up to a nice quiet viewpoint of the whole old town and then walked to the far other side of the city to Hotel Belevedre, the abandoned hotel. I walked around the pool and up the side of the building trying to find a way in. I was already spooked by the stray cats wandering around and then just as I was about to leave I found a way in. I was about 3 feet from entering and then got so scared that I couldn't bring myself to go in alone. I went down to the beach instead.
