Opening April 12, 2021 6–24 Britannia Street, London __________ I like to say something and deny it at the same time. —Damien Hirst Gagosian is pleased to announce Fact Paintings and Fact Sculptures, an exhibition of rarely seen works by Damien Hirst created between 1993 and 2021. The exhibition marks the first phase of Hirst’s yearlong takeover of the Britannia Street gallery, and is his first exhibition there since The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 in 2012. As artist and curator, Hirst presents this highly personal series of work through his own eyes. Throughout his storied career, Hirst has confronted the systems of belief that define human existence, from common trust in medicine to the seduction of consumerism. At a moment when the idea of “truth” has never been more tenuous, Hirst’s Fact Paintings and Sculptures question the obduracy of “fact” as a governing principle of society. Mimicking color photographs, the Fact Paintings are rendered in oil on canvas, sometimes with meticulous fidelity, at others reveling in the physicality of mark making. Their verisimilitude recalls the historical role of painting as a tool to represent the visible world and lead the viewer to believe that a two-dimensional image is, in fact, the three-dimensional object it portrays. With the birth of photography in the nineteenth century, painting’s relationship with reality continued to evolve. Hirst’s Fact Paintings explore this back and forth between the brush and the camera as the agents of “truth.”

The first exhibition of the Fact series, The Elusive Truth, was presented at Gagosian New York in 2005 and focused on paintings derived from newspaper photographs. Other subjects include Hirst’s signature motifs of butterflies and diamonds, depictions of his own previous works, and portraits of his friends and family. In many ways, the Fact series can be seen as the artist’s self-portrait, highlighting significant moments of Hirst’s life and career: Michael with Diamond Skull (2008), for example, portrays Michael Craig-Martin—his former tutor at Goldsmiths—posing with the famed sculpture For the Love of God (2007); in Self-Portrait as Surgeon (2007) the artist, dressed in blue scrubs, stands next to a hospital bed; while Cleaning New Baby (Cyrus) (2007) depicts his own newborn son. In the Fact Sculptures, presented alongside the related paintings, Hirst moves beyond the readymade, instead constructing detailed replicas of real objects. In Love Dies Fast (2020) and Station (2014), physical elements of workshops and storage spaces appear, while in Snob (2006–20) and Public School Tosser (2006–20) he makes reference to his own iconic jewelry cabinets, wryly juxtaposed here with garbage bags and cans. Other sculptures attest to Hirst’s preoccupation with the order of things, their preservation and display: in Persil (2015) and Coke/Diet Coke Vending Machine (2007), a stacked pallet and a vending machine underscore the significance of consumer goods and product packaging, the high with the low. Some of the sculptures on view are charged with relevance to lived experience in the COVID-19 era. Remedies Against the Great Infection (2020) offers hand sanitizer and personal protective equipment, while sculptures such as Don’t Stop Me Now (2006) and Warsaw (2008), replete with medical supplies, take on new meaning within the context of the enduring pandemic. By incorporating these by-now-ubiquitous commodities into sculptures, Hirst speaks to the new landscape of material culture that has become a dark fact of contemporary life. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. Fuck war, love comics.

So I’m making my way through Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin and like I’ve seen Yaz’s work before.  I have the first volume of Venus Wars--but it just didn’t click for me. MSG: The Origin tho is goddamn sorcery on the page. You need to know this first off, you don’t need to know anything about Gundam to read this.  The whole thing is this is the book retelling the story that started it all but like Yaz’s from the heart version.  And two volumes in, which is like...1000 pages of comics, and this is a masterpiece.  

I’m mostly going to talk about the art, but story wise, military stuff is generally not my bag.  Unfortunately, it’s a genre that is grossly popular in American comics, not just in straightforward military stories, but superhero comics as well.  Too often these heroes have design updates that are all too happily to enlist heroes whose past models leaned more heavily into daredevil circus performers or wrestlers.  You know the look.  When your favorite hero goes from tights and a cape look to body armor looking shit everywhere.  War on crime right? And then these companies on their film side have all kinds of connections to the military industrial complex--hell these companies often employ ex-military, or in some notable cases ex-CIA to write the damn books.  And when you couple that with how interested the military has always been with warping people’s brains to keep the war machine humming(they once put acid in a whole town’s water supply just to see what would happen!) it’s quite unnerving!  So besides being extremely anti-war in practice, I’m also pretty tin foil hat when it comes to seeing the edges of the military in pop culture, particularly when the message is like “look how cool this is!”

Which as a sidebar is one of the things that makes the Aubrey Sitterson GI Joe thing complicated to me, because like...I don’t think GI Joe is a good thing, and I don’t believe leftists should be getting their pay pushing paper for something that could not BE more military industrial.  Like let's make kids think how cool being a soldier and going to war is--and then those kids grow up, and what a surprise we are in like ten wars that we know about, and will be for forever--and you get this kind of brainwashing that turns Kapernick trying to say “hey, maybe cops should stop shooting black men” into a debate about “respecting the flag” because the NFL is in bed with the military….agh.  I hate it.  I hate it all.  From Operation Condor, the firebombings of dresden, hiroshima and nagasaki, the genocide of the american indian, fallujah, Abu Ghraib, our complicity in Saudi atrocities in Yemen and Qatar...we are not the good guys of history!  We kill for empire, but our empire isn’t colonies, it’s more war. Our chief export is war.  And I would love to expatriate to a country that doesn’t have these values, but I don’t know if even then I could shake that shit from my stomach.  And even more insidious than our war is our financial arm, our banks and investors who have killed as many people with pens as any soldiers with guns.  We are an empire of atrocity!

So when I see military comics, or cop comics, it just reminds me that I live in the most warlike country of the last 100 years, and all of those innocent people that are caught up in our bombs, and the way we turn whole regions into chaos to serve our ends and make more money--my relative prosperity as an American is built on the bodies and bloodshed of innocents the world over.  I mean why is America what America is?  It’s because WW2 basically moved europe's wealth to the US, and then we spent it on more bombs and we stepped in not because of any real moral thing--we stepped in because england owed us too much for us to let them go down.  We as a country became a world superpower, the world superpower, through war profiteering and slavery.  That’s a huge aside, but I’m saying, I fucking hate war.  And maybe find ways to not contribute to more of those sort of comics?  But more than that in an aesthetic sense, the codes for military in American comics are so bland and it seems half the time to justify not having to do interesting character designs. So surely there is a better fit for someone like Sitterson who has the politics I do, I think, than writing war comics to a patriotic pro-military audience, so I wish him the best, but fuck GI Joe. (And as an aside aside, if it were Frank Miller and not Aubrey Sitterson with the controversial opinion that book isn’t getting dropped--these companies only do these things as financial calculations, and if you are a big enough cash cow you can say or do whatever you want in comics for the most part but if you aren’t--you better protect your neck because these companies don’t have your interests in mind. And we live in stupid times) So I can fuck with Gundam because 1) it hates war as much as I do. And 2) they’re not trying to make everything look like utilitarian military shit.  They’re about looking goood while they are hating war.   The story is really rich, background characters positively radiate and each have their own character which comes to the fore at different parts.  In some respects, Amuro Ray haunts this comic like death, because he’s the end of so many terrific characters that you really grow to love, and the Federation cause is somewhat murky at best, as is their exploitation of kids like Amuro. I kind of think Yaz does my favorite faces in all of comics, unseating Jose Munoz:

This kind of caricaturing is really lovely for a story this rich and dense, because you get so much just from how a character looks and the faces they make, and it’s quite appealing to look at I think.  There are characters you fall in love with just because you want to see Yaz draw their face again.  The range of expressions he has in the toolkit is amazing to me. Yaz’s style in general to me is like magic.  Lines don’t connect, and it’s like he can just shift around these minimal set of lines and accomplish anything on the page.  It’s like he has a set number of lines that he’s working with on every page, and he just dips his brush into the page and waves it around and those lines bend and contort into perfection.  He’s one like Kirby where he kind of just sits down at a page and the images come out of his brain.

 It’s not overly rendered, but it still is textural and inky.  I think this also has my favorite lettering in comics.  I don’t know who was responsible for it in english, but I love the obvious care that went into varying the lettering, and just how gentle and elegant it is.  It probably was just a font in a computer--but it doesn’t FEEL like that, which is cool. Oh also Yaz watercolors various pages in the book, and they are almost all stunning.  I’m planning to read his Joan of Arc book which is all watercolored, so that should be interesting. But I think what comes across more than anything reading these books, because of not only the comic, but the production value of the books themselves--the hard cover, the essays at the back, the slick pages, the thoughtful lettering--what comes across from stem to stern is that these books are a labor of love and passion in a way that you would not expect from the retelling of a decades old giant anime franchise!

Hideaki Anno said in his essay in the first book: “And I sense a certain good grace.  He decides to draw Gundam--well known to the masses as a premier franchise of the plastic model and anime industries--not from weariness, not as expiation, nor to return to his roots, but in earnest as a work of his own” and I think he’s absolutely correct.  There’s a love and attention to every inch of these books that is really inspiring to behold whether as an artist or in whatever you do to fill out your days--seeing something, anything, done by a master, with care and concern is a special thing to behold.  I mean I don’t know for sure that Yaz actually gives a shit about this book--but that’s what comes across on the page.  It comes across that he cares about these lines, about these stories, vividly, and even more surprising, the people whose charge is getting the work out to others, they seem to care just as much, so what you get is a very very special book.

In some ways, these dueling masters, Char and Amuro Ray, also express this concern and care.  At one point Char loudly criticizes Amuro Ray for his lack of style.  And while Char’s vanity, his secrecy, his romantic rogue ideal is extremely alluring, and any scene he’s in, I’m pretty glued to the page--he’s like Harlock or Queen Emeraldas.  We don’t have these kind of artist villains in American comics for some reason.  The closest I’ve seen was Ron Wimberly’s Prince of Cats which has characters who besides their bloody monstrous ideas, consider style to be important.

But even with all of that going on with Char, I’m surprisingly drawn to Amuro Ray--who is a character even without watching the original Gundam series(something I’m planning to rectify this winter--trying to finally knock out all the Gundam I’ve put off for years) that you just kind of know even without ever knowing why.  He’s a legend.  Like Luke Skywalker.  Even his name when you say it, you feel like you are speaking the name of a god.  But he’s a punk kid who has been dragged into this war against his will, and is desperately trying to balance doing the right thing, and keeping his identity.  I love that sometime he just refuses to go out in the Gundam which puts Ltg Bright in these particular binds(Bright might lo key be my favorite character in the series weirdly, for how he kind of morphs through being a snotty prick, to being in over his head, to being someone capable of real genius creativity. I’ve been watching Iron Blooded Orphans which is a Gundam series about child soldiers and is really brutal and depressing, and Orga is kind of like Bright mixed with Char.) Comics like these keep the fires going.  There’s an infinity of them out there to be sure, but nothing makes me happier than a truly great comic.  Those comics that years after you remember the experience of reading them, where you were, what music was playing.  A great comic is a great lover.  It won’t last forever, though there’s a LOT of this book still for me to read--and I get in this mode where I both want to just inhale the whole comic as fast possible, and I don’t want this experience to end.  This is that sort of thing.  Which should be evident, since I bothered to write about it, haha.  I could never just review comics.  I’m like Amuro Ray with comics criticism, I need the right situation to be compelled to climb in and do it.  I don’t fundamentally love writing comics criticism--but when I experience something great, I have to talk about it and write about it.  Comics like these affirm everything about being involved with comics for me.  Check it out, see if you feel the same way.

Day 50 – No alcohol allowed

At around 2:30am Doha time we gave up on the sleeping room and headed to the ground floor salad and sandwich restaurant to kill more time. J had a Caprese and a Greek salad accompanied by more of the Rosé champagne.

We found some wide leather chairs to lounge in and were able to take a shower before our flight. The plane’s seats were even more comfortable for sleeping. We had a good day’s rest on our four-hour flight to the Maldives and a decent breakfast. As we were landing, a flight attendant announced that porn, religious materials and pork are banned in the Maldives. As we soon discovered, the flight attendant left one very important item off of the list.

We arrived in the international airport. We were first off the plane and shot through immigration up until S got flagged for contraband. S was carrying a bottle of rum from Saint Lucia, which showed up on the X-ray machine. You might think this isn’t a problem, but apparently the Maldives is a dry country. They confiscated the bottle but offered to return it on S’ departure. Hopefully someone is enjoying the rum tonight.

The airport is on a separate island and you have to cross a bridge to get to the main island of Male. We checked in at our transit hotel, the Somerset Hotel. It is reasonably nice and the King bed rooms are spacious. We took a lengthy nap in our first proper bed in nearly a week. The hotel woke us up at around 8pm to let us know about our departure time and seaplane check-in tomorrow morning. We decided to get a quick bite to eat down at the hotel restaurant. The menu included both Western and Asian options. S had the Cambodian spring rolls and J had the chicken madras and dal soup. The food was pretty good but we confirmed that the main island of the Maldives is dry. The only alcohol to be found is off land (eg on a boat) or in one of the tourist resorts. We therefore stuck to water, which we were surprised to find had been manufactured by Schweppes on the island. We learned that fresh water is a precious commodity in the Maldives. The only natural fresh water they have is from rain and they have to desalinate the bulk of their water. We also learned that there is a 22% charge added to every bill. It is a good thing we chose to go all inclusive at the resort.

We returned to the room where J had to spend a bit of time repacking so we can make the weight allowance on the seaplane tomorrow and we will be storing some bags at the hotel.  

We also realised that Qatar had been blocking our access to Tumblr and so we are only now able to post the last few days.

7 beautifully-designed items I want to own (but can’t because I’m poor)

Okay so this list doesn’t come in any particular order. 

1. côte&ciel ISAR ECOYARN black rucksack

I was standing very close to a very cool-looking person in the New York City subway N train when I noticed hanging on his behind this most sublime backpack I’ve ever seen. It was like an architectural artform with its shape and structure. More than an hour of googling later, I found out that it’s from the brand Cote et Ciel and they call it a “rucksack”, not backpack. 

I set out to find it when I got back home to Manila but they don’t sell it here back then. The next time I saw it was on a trip to Jakarta, in a swanky mall and it was on sale for almost 5,000 pesos. Dumbest decision not to use a credit card at that exact moment because 5 years later today I still don’t have the bag. On a recent trip to Tokyo, I saw it on display at a shop in Aoyama (you know where all the cool [but funny] people go) and it retailed for more than 45,000 pesos. Okay, maybe next time?

2. Kenneth Cobonpue Chiquita Stool

"Comfortable” won’t be the first thing that comes to mind when you see the Chiquita stool by acclaimed Filipino furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue. Its protruding rattan poles don’t look too welcoming to one’s underside. But, attending a party at a wealthy colleague’s house changed my mind completely. In their living room stood proudly two of these. Curious enough, I sat on one. The individual rattan poles sank softly, embracing the shape of my bum as it descended upon them. I was gobsmacked. More gobsmacked, in fact when I found out that they cost 40,000 pesos ON SALE at Manila FAME. Not too keen checking out how much they cost when they’re not.

I recently moved to a new job in BGC and our office lobby has about 8 pieces of these chairs. I’m now currently looking for ways to smuggle at least one of them, undetected. (I’m kidding!!!)

3. True Residential 30 Inch Refrigerator Column

Ever since I turned 30, I’ve become more inclined towards owning home appliances rather than gadgets. (I’m turning into a tito!!!) I’ve always loved seeing glass-door refrigerators that displayed all the delicious food you can eat inside. And the best designed one I found is this refrigerator from True. What’s nice about it is that you can mix and match it with their other refrigerators to create your own fridge wall, just like how they do it in Google offices! 

But, tough luck because each unit will set you back 12,000 US dollars, that’s more than 600,000 pesos in our money. And I don’t think they’re sold here in the Philippines so you have to ship them from the United States. And of course before that you need to build a nice home that deserves to have one or two of these first!

4. Jura S8 Coffee Machine

This sleek-looking “coffeemaker” retails for P190,000 pesos. That’s enough money to buy Starbucks everyday for the next 3 and a half years. I, I, can’t. Though I guess this beautiful beast would last way longer than that, eh?

5. Sonos Beam Compact Smart Soundbar

I love objects that blend well into their surroundings yet still appear inconspicuous enough so much that visitors to the house would always say “Wow this looks so nice!” with utmost materialistic admiration when they lay sight on it. 6.  Vipp 18 L / 5 gal Pedal Bin

You know you’ve reached peak mayaman when you can can spend 379 dollars to buy a Scandinavian-designed bin that will hold your trash. It looks really pretty too. I would imagine this would look great right next to where I usually am especially since I hate seeing garbage lie around. Maybe when I get 20,000 pesos to spare I might get one.

Vipp also makes other equally amazing household items and small appliances. They have a showroom at Shangri-la at the Fort which I didn’t bother to enter yet because everyone inside is so intimidating LOL.

7. Qatar Airways Qsuite Business Class 

Saving the best for last because at the core of my being, I love to travel, and I love doing it with my family and/or friends. There’s a deeper sense of joy I feel when I see my mom witness beautiful places for the first time. 

In 2017, Qatar Airways came up with their Qsuite Business Class product. It looks so good they had it patented to make sure no other airline copies it. It features the only double bed available in Business Class for any airline, with privacy panels that stow away, allowing passengers in adjoining seats to create their own private room (this kind of industrial design is what airlines should strive for!). I could just imagine flying 10+ hours to somewhere wonderful with my family in such a configuration (my dad loves to sleep anywhere so he’ll love the bed). It’s just too bad it costs ~190,000 pesos per person on a Singapore-Doha flight. I’ll stick with Cebu Pacific thankyouverymuch.

Hot and Humid

Ho Hoan Kiem - Hanoi

I have been told that I can find Tai Chi groups around Hoan Kiem lake, so I get up little after five and head to the lake. The streets are crowded with people.  Some are running, walking, practicing qigong, some form of Tai Chi, yoga, sports and various types of dance. And they do everything as spontaneously as children.  Even at this early hour, it's hot and humid, but people laugh and talk as they exercise, pausing and restarting, unencumbered by time or any other restrictions. There are some well-organized groups, in which participants wear the same color t-shirts and follow an instructor.  I'm happy just walking around and watching the people.  After a while, I go back to the hotel, for some much needed time in the air-conditioned room and breakfast.     I'm not staying at the cheapest hotel.  When booking a hotel I'm always tempted to go for the lowest prices but fear of unclean sheets and bedroom prevents me from doing that. The reason I decided on The Artisan is that, a) it came with the indication from my trusted friend and contact in Vietnam; b) they offer free wi-fi -- I later found that pretty much all hotels offer wi-fi in Vietnam; c) free breakfast and d) I like the name.  Early next morning I go down to the cafe, which is located right beside the hotel.  You enter this small room and take the stairs to the second floor where there's a good-sized room with about eight tables.  The walls are painted with big, colorful flowers, and in the middle, the room dips about one foot, where there's a table surrounded by sofas. It also has wi-fi.  I could live here!

The best part, though, is the balcony overlooking the street below.  However, if the customer wants air conditioning, and that's the most popular option, she'll stay inside.  As soon as I come in the English-speaking waitress takes my voucher and asks if I want noodle soup.  I decline, as I find the weather too hot for soup. The breakfast itself is buffet-style.  I start with a plate of fruits; watermelon, pineapple, mango, and passion fruit.  For the second course, I have rice, noodles, vegetables, and salad.  My third course is comprised of pancakes, toast, some munchkin-like pastry, and lots of English tea.   My sleep schedule is a mess.  I feel and look tired (as pictures will show) but not really interested in sleeping.  I do some writing and communicating with family and friends, then leave again to look for the postal agency my friend showed me the day before.  I find it without a problem and send a postal card to my friend who's celebrating her 65th birthday.  Actually, I just want the card to be stamped on her birthday, for even if it could get to the U.S. instantly, it wouldn't find her home, as she is celebrating her birthday with a little loop around the world.  She's doing a rather cool thing in which she will stay in Perth until the second of June, then fly to an island, arriving there on the morning of June second, because of the different time zone.  She shrugs and says, "oh, well, you're only 65 once."  I tell her, "Well, in your case, you're 65 twice!" She laughs and says it wasn't planned, it just happened this way.   Once I send her the postal card, I decide to explore.  I go in direction of the Opera House and have the bright idea to walk around it and come back via the same street.  Well, it doesn't work quite this way, since there are a couple of buildings behind the Opera House, and what seemed to be a great idea turns out to be a problem, because I end up on a busy and dusty street I have never seen before. It's is also not a pleasant street.  There are people on the sidewalk, fixing stuff, eating, playing checkers, all in shorts and no shirts, sweating like me.  I have the map in my bag but I'm too hot and impatient to stop and open it under the burning sun.  I decide to keep walking since I know the general direction of the lake and if I find the lake, I have no problem finding the hotel.  All I need is to turn right on the next street.  But no street opens to the right here.  I walk and walk, hoping that going forward will be more effective than turning around.  Besides, I wanted to see new stuff, so why go back?  The problem is that the sun and humidity are doing a number on my well-being.  It's 104 degrees, but it feels like 117, according to the weather app on my phone.  I haven't slept well in days and I feel my blood pressure going down. I keep walking.  Finally, there's the option to turn right and I take it.  And after a while, I take another right, which should take me back to the Opera House.  On this street, I see quite a few official-looking buildings.  As Vietnam's capital, Hanoi is the seat of governmental offices, which means that, as you walk around the city, you see a number of official buildings.  Government offices and embassies abound.  Qatar, Cambodia, India, Laos... it would be hard to avoid them.  Some of these buildings have a short description in French or English, but most of them I can only guess what they're about.  In front of these buildings, young guards dressed in green uniforms stand under a large umbrella, which protects them from the sun but not from the heat or humidity.  Some also have a fan, which makes walking by them rather pleasant.  They're serious but polite, giving me a little nod as I pass.   I finally see the Opera House in all its splendor, cool even in this heat, and take the decorated street toward the lake.

By the time I arrive at the hotel I'm feeling faint and I'm sure I'm having a sunstroke.  I drink water, take a shower and a long nap, which completely restore me to my normal healthy self.   My stomach wakes me up around 10 p.m.  My last meal was breakfast around 9 a.m. I don't need much, I tell myself, but I need something to eat, preferably something salty, like pretzels, that will go well with the Tiger beer in the fridge, courtesy (for a small fee) of The Artisan.  I go out, thinking all I'll find open at this hour is a vending machine. Wrong! New York City never sleeps?  Hanoi doesn't know the meaning of the word.  I'm starting to think that there are much more residents here than what I can see on the streets.  I have noticed that the people at five a.m. are older than the people at midnight.  Don't get me wrong, there are people of all ages, ancient to newborn and everything in between, on the streets at all times, but I think they have a system in place in which they take turns.  Maybe they have a schedule and a curfew, which would make sense because God knows the streets are already crowded as it is.  I can imagine Hanoians talking, "so, what's your time to be out?" "Eight to 20:00, and you?" "This year I got 5 to 18:00 because I turned 55."  For all the Vietnamese I understand, they might as well be talking about their "out-time". Hanoians love the streets.  In the U.S. everybody rushes around so that they can go back to the comfort of their homes sooner.  Perhaps our American streets are not as welcoming as they are here.  American streets are definitely cleaner but that alone does not hold people outside.  Every Friday night the city closes the streets around Ho Hoan Kiem to traffic, so that people can freely walk, perform and play. There are people playing all kinds of instruments, artists drawing people's portraits, sellers offering just about everything, teenagers having jump-rope competition, people of all ages dancing, exercising, talking to friends.  Let me tell you about the ubiquitous plastic stool in Hanoi.  They are on every sidewalk, in every park, in churches, restaurants and wherever people gather.  They are usually blue or red, a little over a foot tall, and pretty resistant. Hanoi is a very active city.  Even the fact that the main transportation is motorbike attest to that.  People are always on the go.  While riding, their feet are not far from the ground and they often push the motorbike when arriving or leaving a place.  Were they not as active and fit, these plastic stools would not be as popular.  Many Americans I know would not attempt to sit on one of these stools. They are about a foot high, so the person is almost squatting, but not quite.  If you have knee or hip problems or are overweight, sitting on a stool like that would be torture. For the Hanoian, though, they are a convenient place to sit while eating a meal, having a drink with friends, or playing checkers, all of which they do on the sidewalks. Hanoi is famous for its street food as it is fresh, tasty, inexpensive and readily available.  At the place where I bought the spring rolls, they didn't speak much English.  Most Hanoians, especially merchants, know basic English and when they don't, they are pretty good at understanding pointing, head-shakes, and nods. I can haggle about price, even when they don't speak a word of English.  At that shop, I was not concerned about price, which was fair enough, but I need to convey to them that I am vegan, and therefore wanted no meat or eggs in my food.  They nodded quickly -- a merchant will rarely say they don't understand or don't have what you're looking for.  As Vietnamese, they want to help you, and as merchants, they want to make a sale.  I ask that my food be packed to go and leave.  The spring rolls are good, except for the thin strip of ham I have to take out from each one. Oh, well!

Compañerxs, The Universidad de la Tierra Califas' Fierce Care Ateneo will gather on Saturday, July 22, from 2.00 - 5.00 p.m. at Miss Ollie's / Swans Market (901 Washington Street, Oakland, a few blocks from the 12th Street BART station) to continue our regular, open reflection and action space to explore questions and struggles related to the emerging politics of fierce care as well as some of the questions below. Recently academics in service of the military industrial complex put forward a theory of military engagement that warns dominant military powers of the day, i.e. the U.S. and by extension Israel, to recognize that today's most profound military challenge emanates from "urbanization," that is the production of fragile and feral cities ("characterized by violence and disorder"). Not surprisingly, the cities that militaries must protect are the smart cities (with "technology fully integrated"), i.e. those cities like San Francisco, London, Barcelona, and Tel Aviv, that are organized around technologies and related services designed for the digerati and the lifestyle they enjoy. (see, Williams and Selle, "Military Contingencies in Megacities and Sub-Megacities.") It's hardly a new thesis much less a new concern or practice. Military might has been aware of the threats that enemies bunkered in cities pose and the difficulties inherent in urban warfare. For some time now Raul Zibechi has reminded us of how present day "superpowers" worry about the expanding urban periphery, the zones of non-being both on the edges of major metropolitan centers and in the periphery more generally. (see, Zibechi, "Subterranean echos: Resistance and politics 'desde el Sótano'") Locally, the increasingly visible militarization of urban police departments reflects a growing investment in low intensity war as a strategy to control urban populations. What we witness is more than simply an increase in the introduction of sophisticated new armaments filtered back into police departments from the military. As families with deep roots in Oakland, for example, are displaced to outlying zones such as Vallejo and Stockton, paramilitary-like formations and strategies ratchet up violence that targets specific individuals, invades homes, and disrupts family relations. More and more state violence strikes in broad daylight as young people are gunned down walking to the store or chased off roads by multi-agency task forces, as in the cases of Colby Friday (8-12-2016) and James Rivera Jr. (7-22-2010). What is worthy of note in this new global formulation of "contemporary Stalingrads" is the tacit recognition of the amount of inequality and the intensity of its production in the current capitalist conjuncture. In other words, elites and the military ranks in their service recognize how capitalism is producing an increasingly "dangerous" population behind growing numbers of "sheet-metal forests." (see, Williams and Selle, "Military Contingencies in Megacities and Sub-Megacities.") Indeed, this becomes a moment in the articulation of a new racial spatial regime. In this context, it is worth noting the recent arms deals of the Trump administration with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Taiwan. Worth billions, these weapons are largely manufactured in the U.S. and are backed by what Robert Kurz reminds us is military bullion, from the gold dollar to the arms dollar. According to Kurz, "the dollar maintained its function as world currency through the mutation from the gold dollar to the arms dollar. And the strategic nature of global wars in the 1990s and turn of the century in the Middle East (in the Balkans and in Afghanistan) was directed at preserving the myth of the safe haven via the demonstration of the ability to intervene militarily on a global scale, thereby also securing the dollar as world currency." (see, R. Kurz, "World Power and World Money: The Economic Function of the U.S. Military Machine within Global Capitalism and the Background of the New Financial Crisis") Much more needs to be said about the military strategy currently being developed in response to the production of mega-cities and sub mega-cities, i.e. urbanization. Read genealogically, the present focus on urbanization presents as simply another justification for a greater commitment to invest in counter insurgency strategies and low intensity conflict against civilian populations in regions of the world that still have strategic interests for the U.S. More to the point, these strategies and investments in social control economies are increasingly directed at historically under-represented populations in the U.S. Against this onslaught, it is the practices of care, the nurturing that makes survival possible, that poses the greatest threat by communities sheltering in "sheet-metal forests" or even those sub-terranean networks of care that are almost entirely invisible in the "concrete canyons" of smart cities. If the rebel army has always relied on care and strong bonds with the community to survive, perhaps it is these networks that define the resistance in the present moment, more than ideology and identification, flags and formations. Strategies of capitalism designed to dismantle systems, networks, and practices of care work in tandem with militarization organized as counterinsurgency against a local population. Precarias a la Deriva alert us that women in Madrid's urban periphery have been creatively responding to the system's efforts to dismantle care. They warn that precarity results from four trajectories: the dismantling of of the Welfare State towards a shift to strategies of "containment of subjects of risk;" the dismantling of community spaces and expansion of commercial spaces, paralleled by the "hegemony of the car;" the dismantling of systems and skills to grow and share food, produce clothing and other necessities, a process that works hand in hand with the rise of fast food and prepared food; and the invasion aimed at time, resources, recognition, and desire for caring for children, elderly, and infirmed. (see, Precarias a la Deriva, "A Very Careful Strike-Four Hypotheses") Thus, precarity, as a current strategy of capitalism is often designated, results when areas of care in our everyday lives are privatized and no longer in our collective control. But despite this reality, people, especially women, refuse to abandon the obligations of care. Not only are we able to recognize and remain committed to care; we find at times it can be fierce. What distinguishes care —that is the everyday efforts to nurture and be nurtured by the people around us— with other practices we are beginning to come to understand as fierce care? We refuse to abandon what we generally think of care. We expect people to be thoughtful, to worry about each other, to find ways to support, nurture, and heal those around us. But, more than that there is a growing awareness of the necessity to directly confront forces and systems of violence that intentionally target specific folks, disrupt the community, dismantle the social infrastructure, and unweave the social fabric. In Stockton, mothers whose grown children have been killed by the state weave a complex fabric of refusal and care. Immediately following the killing of Colby Friday last August by Stockton Police officer David Wells, Dionne Smith, the mother of James Rivera Jr. who had been killed by Stockton Police six years earlier, went to the spot where Colby had been killed, and with others refused to leave —watching over the spot for two weeks and protecting the community memorial until Colby’s body was in the ground. Colby’s mother, Denise Friday, who lives two hours away in Hayward, also returns to the spot regularly, to sit and engage neighbors, refusing erasure and the fear that comes when police attempt to impose narratives and silence. These acts of vigil rest beneath the community gatherings and speak outs where mothers gather to seek and define justice; they are the quiet beneath the protests and the arrests. When school let out across California in early June and the distribution of school lunches was discontinued for summer, these same mothers began gathering once a week making dozens and dozens of brown bag lunches and handing them out to local children to help bridge the hunger of children in summer when the schools shut down. When there was extra lunches, they distributed them to the houseless community gathered under the highway overpass, or in one instance to people displaced from their apartments by fire earlier that day. As August and the one year anniversary of the killing of Colby Friday approaches, these mothers are raising funds for a back-to-school backpack drive (Colby Friday - Backpack Drive). Colby’s school age daughters dreamed the project together: the August prior, their father had been killed just before they all had a chance to get their back-to-school supplies together. In response a year later, their act of organizing supplies both exposes and remembers the stolen life of Colby, and reaches out to other children and families to share supplies. These interconnected acts mark a commitment to confront forces of violence to protect family and community and at the same time create space for everyday care. These are the moments where the care is fierce. 

We retell this story and we are reminded of another story from Oaxaca —in Oaxaca, comrades tell us, when we hear bullets being fired, we don’t run away, we run to the sound of the bullets to find each other and together discover a way to stop them. As our comrades in Uni Tierra Oaxaca recently reflected: we must come together and listen, recognizing that we must learn from each other as an act of sharing and care —rather than one seeking to crush the other. This too is a fierce care.
