The clumsy controls and character movement are the most persistent problem. Incidentally, the amount of backtracking required to bag every statue and make any meaningful progress is inexcusable.By clicking 'enter', you agree to GameSpot's Your character's run animation is awful, there's no real story to speak of, the jumping is terrible, and the whole thing feels like a big perplexing mess. Yet, on a fundamental level, there's little to recommend about Balan Company's debut. I spent much of my time playing Balan Wonderworld with my cynical, curmudgeonly old face screwed up, but I'm sure there's someone less bitter than I am who will get something out of the game. Clearly aimed at a younger audience, I can't imagine this holding a kid's attention for too long, and if you're an older player, it's probably best to avoid it altogether. This is definitely a case of throwing a whole bunch of stuff at the wall to see what sticks, and, unfortunately, a lot of it doesn't. Some costumes, meanwhile, present you with sports-based mini-games, like booting a football at targets, bowling, golf, and baseball distractions. The variety of outfits do keep things mildly interesting, whether it's using the 'Lovely Lantern' to light your way through dark areas, the 'Sickle Slinger' for hurling blades at enemies, or the 'Dusk Butterfly' to flap your way across gaps. You collect Balan statues, go to the next area, fight a 'Nega Boss' (enemy design, is, for lack of a better word, crap), and then you'll have a bit of a dance. But in Balan Wonderworld I had nothing to hold onto, narratively speaking or otherwise. Robotnik had ensnared animals and stolen the chaos emeralds, so you had a mission, of sorts. At least in a game like Sonic the Hedgehog, you knew that Dr. Ultimately, it all feels quite pointless. Upon completing an act of each level, you're whisked back to the verdant 'Isle of Tims', a hub region where you can look after your Tims, help them multiply, and have them complete secondary objectives for you at certain milestones, building new structures within the hub. You're also never really sure why you're collecting different coloured gems then feeding them to little fluffy birds that follow you around, called 'Tims'. And that's really Balan Wonderworld's most cardinal sin – it's a platforming game with bad jumping. Why one button isn't a default jump button regardless of which costume you're currently wearing, is beyond me. For some reason, someone thought it would be a great idea to have every button do the same thing, so with the exception of the left and right bumpers, used to switch outfits, every other input is 'jump' or 'use ability'. Different outfits you can unlock by gathering keys (usually situated conveniently next to the little pod in which the costume is contained) grant new abilities, and some of them inexplicably remove your ability to jump. That's essentially Balan Wonderworld in a nutshell. Collecting a gold top hat will initiate a profoundly dull mini-game featuring Balan himself, in which you have to match his shadow to an action he performs in a sequence. Your sole objective is to collect golden statuettes of Balan, tucked away in each of the game's 12 chapters, in order to progress. In the background is the eponymous “mysterious maestro” Balan himself, a gangly creature decked out in a crisp white suit, a hat with red trim, and stupid green hair peeking out at the back, who apparently runs the show. There's a farmer whose farm is a mess (or something), a girl who has lost her dolphin, a girl who has no friends because she likes insects, and other needy folks to help, if you can be bothered. The game is a colourful adventure in which you play as either Emma or Leo, and proceed to help people who have lost something they hold dear. Sonic the Hedgehog, Yuji Naka, and artist/character designer Naoto Ohshima. The Elastiplant is one of the first costumes you'll wear.īut I'm getting ahead of myself.

Hello!
I don't stand by my opinion of Balan Wonderworld. I was heated after seeing so many people give it a bad review, because some reviewers said "I hate it, the end". Sometimes they didn't even play the game for very long! Surprising I know...
For the people on PC, I can understand. There's a bug with item collection, and its happened to me. Seems to be recent? Hope it isn't on Console cause that would suck..
I'm broke right now and cannot get the Switch version to play it for myself. Even if I end up not liking the gameplay, I can enjoy the everything else. Which basically means I cannot say a word console-wise until I play the console version myself.
For now, my feet are planted firmly into the "I'm neutral about this game" camp. And I also don't like how I went about saying "Let me like Balan in peace." Put the flamethrower down, me. Use it on the bots, not the reviewers.
I'm sure people are going to comment about it as well... but yes I stand by my opinion that I like Mighty No. 9 despite its flaws. And also for unintentional nostalgia reasons, since the first console I poured my heart out on was the Wii U. Even if the Wii U version is ass-

Whichever child the player chooses stumbles upon Balan's theater, and Balan takes them on an adventure through dreamlike worlds based on the lives of other people.

The types and number of enemies changes to make the game easier or more challenging as required. 2 Getting Started accessibility featuresĪlthough there is no difficulty setting the game automatically adjusts to your skill level.Human characters have three lives and once they are exhausted, the character falls to the ground and respawns nearby. When a character is defeated, they quickly disappear. There are battles that involve non-realistic violence towards both human and fantasy characters. Rated PEGI 7 because it feature depictions of non-realistic violence of a minor nature towards human-like or animal-like characters, depictions of non-realistic violence towards fantasy characters, and pictures or sounds likely to be scary or frightening to young children. Some weapons allow players to aim and shoot at enemies from a first-person perspective robotic/mech suit costumes allow players to shoot small lasers from their chests. From a third-person perspective, players traverse platform environments, solve puzzles, and use various abilities/weapons (e.g., fireballs, tornadoes, blasters) to defeat fantastical creatures. The simplicity resulted in negative reviews but is a real boon to families and those looking for an unusual and puzzle-focused challenge.ĮSRB 10 Fantasy Violence. The costumes interplay with the puzzles in each of the levels, providing abilities to help you progress. There are 80 different costumes that can be collected, each has a different ability and attack style. Play involves exploring elaborate stages and switching between costumes to access different actions with the single button controls. It's a platform game not generally loved by gaming experts, but a really good fit for younger or new-to-gaming people. This offers unique puzzles while reducing the number of buttons you need to press. Like Mario Odyssey, much of the gameplay revolves around getting temporary abilities (here it is with outfits) to progress. It draws on classic 3D platform games, but with simpler controls and a more laid back challenge. Those who still want to try the game for themselves can grab it on PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4 right now, either digitally or at retail.Balan Wonderworld is a running, jumping and exploration game.

The game does certainly have other issues though, and we’ll be detailing those in full in our upcoming review due to be published later this week. During my time with the game, I haven’t seen any evidence of this bug although I am yet to reach the final boss.

The day one patch did fix the bug that could potentially trigger seizures in those with photo sensitive epilepsy, as well as inducing some nausea and headaches in those without a history of epilepsy. While some of these problems were altered in a day one patch, it wasn’t “feasible to reflect every piece of feedback into the game” as some of the problems were to do with the game’s structural mechanics that can’t just be altered easily. The problem is it also showed up some of the problems with the game, including issues with movement controls, camera movement, and the game’s difficulty. The demo allowed access to World 1, World 4, and World 6, showcasing the different costumes and the variety of abilities the game offered. Players got to try out the demo for Balan Company’s platformer title at the end of January.

Okay everyone, I bought Balan Wonderworld and here are my thoughts!
It's actually pretty good! It's definitely not as bad as people make it out to be, the game plays a lot like A Hat in Time and Slime Rancher with the style of Sonic and Stardew Valley! The story is interesting, the characters are fun and the animations are TOP NOTCH.
Long story short, it's a good game, 9/10, one point deducted because the camera is kind of disorienting at first.

If you’ve ever wondered why there aren’t demos for every game, look no further than Balan Wonderworld. What initially appeared to be a promising collaboration between the renowned Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima during its debut at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2020 ended up becoming the internet’s punching bag once people got their hands on the demo. Players were befuddled by the aesthetic, displeased with the game’s pace, and unable to see the appeal of the costume system combined with the single-button controls. Some complaints were addressed via the day one patch, but the damage was already done and the game was seemingly destined for failure – releasing on the same day as Monster Hunter Rise certainly didn’t help either!

"Oh dear! Don't worry, there isn't anything to fear. I may look like a beast, but humans aren't something that I see as a feast! Deep within Wonderworld, there's a very unique bone. This is what happens when I eat one!" - Balan, Maestro turned Wonderwolf.
There are various consumable goodies to be found deep in Wonderworld than just Tim Drops. One such treat is the Wonder Bone, a peculiar candy shaped item made from emotions of long lost memories. It doesn't have any effect on humans but it's a whole other ball park when it comes to dwellers of the Wonderworld Theatre!
Should Balan eat one he becomes a Wonderwolf! Wonderwolves are the werewolf equivalents to a Maestro, they may look scary but are super friendly if a bit too playful. Wonderwolf Balan usually plays with younger Visitors, giving them piggyback rides and is a sucker for being petted.
If a Tim eats a Wonder Bone however, they become a Wolfim! These little fellows are quite feisty, attacking enemies with their claws or digging up items hidden under the ground. Wolfim can follow their respective Visitor by land or through the air by spinning their tails like a propeller!
So if you ever find an odd looking candy, take a closer before giving it to someone. It might be more than meets the eye.
I did say I was going to give you guys a break of Balan Wonderworld stuff. Welp, that break just ended. I've been hearing things about Balan turning into a dragon considering the game's final boss.
As much as I love dragons, werewolves are one of the monsters that just wins my heart in seconds. Plus, the Werehog needs another wolf buddy.
The level and level music review is taking a bit longer since I am trying to get some good screenshots from my Switch while I go through the levels with a fine tooth comb. My birthday was also the start of this month so I got a bunch of stuff like Monster Hunter Rise. Getting into another fandom makes it hard to focus on my other works.
My folder has literally 50 different story ideas. 😱

Now I’m not what you would call a gamer, but I’ve seen enough reviews and gameplay to definitely see that Balan Wonderworld is not a good game. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinions (I should know, since I do enjoy the Powerpuff Girls Reboot) and if you enjoy the game more power to you. But there is this one review that really got to me. Its from Nintendo Life and it said the following:
Taking a hit causes you to lose the costume you’re carrying, which can necessitate re-navigating the stage in order to get that last niggling collectable. Losing progress because you play the game poorly is a normal state for the medium and cannot reasonably be held against Balan Wonderworld. Sometimes you’ll need to bring costumes/powers in from different stages, because the outfit in question isn’t available in the level that you need it. Pretty standard, again – Kirby does this a lot. But, because it’s Balan Wonderworld, this is now bad.
Now does Kirby require you to bring powers from another level to access something from a previous level. Yes. But there’s a reason why Kirby’s gameplay is not heavily criticized like Balan Wonderworld and I’m going to highlight numerous reasons. And I am only just going to use Kirby’s Adventure for the NES though you can do the same thing with any Platformer game and the upcoming Kirby Title.

#1 - You’re Never Defenseless…
In Balan Wonderworld, you are required to get Costumes to be able to deal with enemies. So if you’re one of those gamers who likes to do challenge videos, you can’t do a “Can you beat Balan Wonderwold without Costumes?” Challenge. Meanwhile, you can beat Kirby’s Adventure 99% without power ups. The only exception is the Meta Knight fight where you are required to use the sword and the final Boss which requires the Star Rod. And both times, they’re handed to you and you have no chance of losing them… Speaking of which…

#2 - You Don’t Instantly Lose Your Powers…
In Balan Wonderworld, the Costumes act as your hit points. Meaning if you get hit once, you lose that power up. In most platformer games that’s not a problem, but in Balan Wonderworld you are required to have them for progression or being able to fight back. And it's not a problem in Kirby. There are times you can be hit while having a power and still retain it and when you do lose it, you have a brief moment of time to recover your power. So if you need a specific power to get 100%, you don’t lose it because you took a hit you didn’t mean to.

#3 - Powers Don’t Remove Your Jump
The most important thing in a platformer is the ability to jump. This is also true in Balan Wonderworld. The problem is some of those costumes remove your ability to jump. Luckily you can switch to one with the ability to, but if you happen to have all your costumes without the ability to jump, or your final costume is the jumpless ones, you can’t switch to your human form. So you would need to purposely hit yourself to lose that Costume to progress. Besides Sleep that keeps you in place for a minute, Kirby allows you to jump when you have a Power. The only exception is UFO, which gives you free movement making jumping not a requirement.

#4 - There is Few Overlapping Abilities.
Balan Wonderworld has 80 Costumes to Kirby’s 25 Powers. While Kirby has a few powers that overlap (Mike/Crash and Throw/Backdrop comes to mind) and 2 have little to no use (Light and Sleep), they have their own unique attributes that makes them different from one another. Conversely, Balan Wonderworld has numerous powers that do the same thing. While there are slight differences, you have three different power ups dedicated to ground pounding, three different musical based costumes that just perform on a certain platform, costumes with multiple jumps, costumes with long jumps, costumes that can freeze time, costumes that can swim, costumes to turn gears, costumes that can float and be immune to floor hazards, costumes that can magnetize collectables… And some are better than others so what’s the point of those first ones?

#5 - You Don’t Need Powers To Beat The Game.
While this sounds like a continuation of the Defenseless Argument in #1, this is more about the ability to Progress. Watching “How Many Costumes Does It Take to Beat Balan Wonderworld?” by Kyrrone, he was forced to use a power up to get past a barrier. So that’s one costume that only had one use for him and he was forced to grab it because it was the only way to pass a door. And he’s a speed runner for this game, imagine how casual players have to deal with having to use costumes they may not like or even want to use because the game wants you to use it. That only happened in Kirby twice, and it was for bosses.
So these are five reasons why it worked for Kirby and not Balan Wonderworld. Had this in my mind so it was nice to finally let it out. Do you agree?

okay i just played through the ENTIRE demo for Balan Wonderworld (yes, including the side-objective plus unlocking the 2nd and 3rd levels, which arent playable rn but look awesome) and now i have a yearning to get this dang game :’)
i should have taken a screenshot of all 11 of my tims, but there was one who had part of its eggshell on its head and it was SO ADORABLE.
i cant tell you how excited i am. for fucks sake i spent like 20 minutes trying to go up some staircase that kept trying to slide me down so i can get to the final balan’s bout, which was really cool (and cute seeing how lance was adorable at the start and when they’re surprised)
but i’ll shut up now! just know that if you havent downloaded the demo yet you should totally go do that! i played mine on my switch and it worked good despite the reviews saying it was shit (everyone likes to overreact i guess lol) but yeah its totally free and i spent like 6-7 hours in-game and all of it felt like it whizzed by!
