On the eve of March 11, the streets of the traditional village of Mengwi, Bali, flooded with monsters. The giant figures loomed over villagers’ heads, with grotesque smiles, protruding fangs, and extra arms and eyes. They danced in the night, each one brought to life by dozens of locals who moved as one, lifting, spinning, and shaking the monstrous creations.

The spectacle, known as the Ngrupuk parade, is one of several rituals meant to banish evil ahead of Nyepi and the Balinese New Year. While Nyepi is a day of mandatory rest and meditation for Balinese Hindus, the night before is quite the opposite.

The monstrous figures known as ogoh-ogoh—meaning to shake—represent Bhuta-Kala, evil spirits that need banishing, according to Balinese Hindu tradition. The figures, some as tall as a two-story building, are carried boisterously through town on bamboo platforms before their fiery demise.

Ngrupuk is a rather new Nyepi ceremony; ogoh-ogohs first appeared in Bali’s capital city Denpasar in the early 1980s. Since then, the annual parade has spread to surrounding villages. Local youth organizations build and carry the demonic effigies, and most crafters are teenagers and young men. Young children sometimes give creating a monster their best shot, while older master craftsmen are typically responsible for the most ornate ogoh-ogoh.

The monsters are traditionally burned at the end of the ceremony as an act of purification, but local painter and ogoh-ogoh collector I Ketut Nuada adds a few monsters each year to his growing collection-turned-museum.

Nuada once made ogoh-ogoh, but now leaves it to younger crafters and focuses instead on rounding up a few of his favorites after each parade. He collects whatever he can afford from among the effigies that survive a night of violent shaking. Over the last 12 years, Nuada has filled every inch of a warehouse in Mengwi with rescued and retired demons, some 31 in total.

“Every year there are more… and more technology,” says Nuada, speaking through a translator. The figures are traditionally made from paper, bamboo, and found materials, and brought to life through vigorous shaking. But in recent years, crafters have been experimenting with using electronics to light the monsters’ eyes, turn their heads, or raise their wings.

Anywhere from one to 10 people craft a single ogoh-ogoh between January and March. It takes dozens more to bring the demons to life. Before the event, disciples from the village temple will bless the ogoh-ogoh in a ritual where ceremonial offerings, called banten, are also presented.

Then the heavy lifting begins. Each figure is carried—along with lights and generators—by up to 40 locals on a raft-like bamboo platform. Dozens more walk ahead of the ogoh-ogoh carrying torches, or stand on the route performing traditional music. Everyone else gathers to take in the spectacle.

While many ogoh-ogoh will end their night in flames, some are stored away to be refurbished and sold for the following year, or—if they’re lucky—end up in Nuada’s collection. Photographer Matjaž Tančič captured the passionate creators, performers, and collectors who came together for Mengwi’s 2024 Ngrupuk event.

just. in general, this was a really good chapter for fleshing out raimei's character further :'] she has such a strong presence in the story so far and i'm having a joyous time & genuinely can't wait to read further into her as it carries on... i think, so far, she's probably my favorite character!!! i'm always weak for characters who are pushing themselves forward solely because there's nowhere else that'll take them, but the fact that she's bound herself to miharu's journey for this, it really does get to me... it's sort of like. finally finding a home that isn't stationary, which is probably something difficult for her at this point too. it's a waypoint amidst all else where she really had to drive herself & come up with others who were allies, but not friends as miharu, presumably, would be fine with or even want to be...

i'm very excited to see how her conflict w her brother comes to a head... and what she'll have to do with herself after her burden's finally released :'] aghhh... my poorest beast.

Hi, I’m TS Putri from Indonesia (🇮🇩). I was born in the province at the western tip of Java, Banten Province. I grew up in a city in Banten Province known as the City of Industry or the City of Steel. During college, I migrated to DI Yogyakarta. The province is famous for its historical and cultural tourist destinations. Yogyakarta is a place that has the most stories and colors of my life. It's not uncommon for me to always feel homesick and want to go back to Yogyakarta. Yes, because I’m currently working in Jakarta, the Metropolitan City in Indonesia.

I wanna travel the world, go to every country, every city, take pictures and be happy. I want to make memories all over the world. Perjalanan Selama di Kota Batu dan Kota Malang, Jawa Timur, Indonesia

Berikut adalah itinerary selama 4 hari 3 malam

Day 1

Pagi hari berkumpul di bandar udara Soekarno-Hatta, Tangerang, Banten untuk melakukan penerbangan menuju Malang, Jawa Timur. Total perjalanan menggunakan pesawat sekitar 1 jam 35 menit. Selamat datang di bandar Udara Abdulrachman Saleh, Malang, Jawa Timur. Sarapan di Depot Janur Kuning. Selanjutnya, tempat wisata yang pertama kali dikunjungi adalah Kampung 3D, kemudian dilanjutkan ke tempat wisata berikutnya yaitu the oncent. Di sini kita bisa makan siang. Setelah makan siang, kita lanjut ke tempat wisata berikutnya yaitu Museum Angkut. Makan malam di Warung Mbok Sri. Setelah itu, kita bisa beli ole-ole terlebih dahulu di HARUM MANIS™ Oleh-oleh Khas Batu | Wingko Apel Batu. Setelah itu, ke tempat penginapan untuk bermalam.

Day 2

Sarapan di sekitar Jatim Park 2 karena banyak tempat jualan makanan di sekitar sana. Pagi ini kita akan ke tempat wisata yaitu Jatim Park2 dimana terdapat beberapa bagian di dalamnya yaitu Batu Secret Zoo dan Museum Satwa. Ini akan memakan waktu seharian karena kawasannya sangat luas. Makan malam di warung Bethania Batu. Setelah itu, nikmati suasana malam di alun-alun kota wisata Batu.

Day 3

Hari ini kita akan ke tempat wisata yang menarik yaitu Jatim Park 3 dimana tempat ini juga tak kalah luasnya dibanding Jatim Park 2. Terdapat kawasan Dino Park dan The legend Stars Park. Makan malam di warung Bu Atik Batu. Setelah makan malam, kalian bisa ke Batu Night Spectacular dimana tempat ini memiliki wahana permainan dan karnaval.

Day 4

Sarapan di Depot Flamboyan. Setelah sarapan, kita akan ke bandar Udara Abdulrachman Saleh, Malang, Jawa Timur karena perjalanan kita selama 3 hari telah selesai. Sore nanti kita akan tiba di Jakarta. Terima kasih telah berkunjung wisata ke daerah Batu, Malang, Jawa Timur.
