#OTD in 1984 – Singer and musician, Luke Kelly, was laid to rest at Glasnevin Cemetery.
‘His legacy was putting his own stamp on a song such that it became the definitive version of a song for others to come along and emulate.’ –John Sheahan. The mass was celebrated by Fr Michael Cleary at the Church of the Holy Child in Whitehall and The Dubliners performed during the ceremony. Kelly’s brothers, John, Jimmy and Paddy carried his coffin along with banjo player Barney McKenna. Luke…

¡Oi!

EFFECTS (1979) – Episode 208 – Decades of Horror 1970s
“It would be nice just to see one little spurt at the moment of slashing.” A little spurt, you say? Can do. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they take a trip to George A. Romero’s sphere of influence for a movie within a movie within a movie within … well, you get the picture. The movie is called Effects (1979).

Decades of Horror 1970s is partnering with the WICKED HORROR TV CHANNEL (https://wickedhorrortv.com/) which now includes video episodes of the podcast and is available on Roku, AppleTV, Amazon FireTV, AndroidTV, and its online website across all OTT platforms, as well as mobile, tablet, and desktop.
While a small film crew are shooting a low-budget horror movie in a house in the woods, the lines between reality and fiction start to blur, and the movie slowly turns into a “snuff” film.

Filmed in 1978 and released the following year, Effects (1979) features Tom Savini (as both actor and special effects guru) and a collection of George A. Romero’s filmmaking friends and colleagues. Oh, yeah, the cast also includes Day of the Dead‘s Captain Rhodes, Joseph Pilato, in a lead role. Shot on a miniscule budget with an ambitious script, the feature contains a story within a story with another movie buried within. The Grue-Crew share their thoughts on all the shenanigans and then read through a hefty amount of feedback. This one has all the goods!
At the time of this writing, Effects is available to stream from Tubi, Screambox, and Arrow, as well as various PPV options. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from AGFA.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Chad, will be The Mad Butcher (1971), aka Lo strangolatore di Vienna, starring Victor Buono. Yikes!

Farewell to The Dubliners' Barney McKenna
Farewell to The Dubliners’ Barney McKenna
Today, I found out that the last of the founding members of The Dubliners, and thereby the one who has been with the group the longest, has passed away. The Dubliners are probably my favourite Irish folk band, and they’re legendary. We had the chance to see them last year when they were in Nottingham. They were back again this year, for the 50th Anniversary Tour in March, and I was really torn,…

Redwall Playlist: “The Maid Behind the Bar” performed by Barney McKenna & The Dubliners
A reel is a type of Irish dance performed in conjunction with a lively tune; oftimes, both the tune and the dance are referred to using the word “reel”. The tune itself may be played in 2/4 (split common time) or 4/4. The pattern of the reel is easily predictable, as two or three lines of melody are grouped together, with each line apt to be repeated before the melody progresses. “The Maid Behind the Bar” (featured above) is a widely popular Irish reel.
In the beginning of Pearls of Lutra, Friar Higgle Stump plays a reel titled “Frogs in a Gully” on his hogtwanger. He is accompanied by Gurrbowl on his drum. It is easy to hear how such a jolly style of song remains a Redwall favorite, reappearing again and again throughout the books.

#OTD in 1984 – Death of Luke Kelly, lead vocalist and 5-string banjo member of the Dubliners.
Luke Kelly was a singer and folk musician from Dublin, most famous as a member of the band ‘The Dubliners’. Indeed, while Luke often sang of the poor, the oppressed, the worker, the lover or the rebel –the realities of his own life and upbringing enlivened and gave weight to his songs and the emotional way in which he sang them. And his own childhood and youth was anything but privileged. Born on…

Name: Barnabus “Barney” Stinson. Their profession: Guys, please (Provide Legal Exculpation and Sign Everything). The writers were nothing short of genius with that acronym for his ‘job’. In essence, Barney Stinson holds the position within Goliath National Bank where he’s the legal scapegoat for the company as a whole. GNB is involved in too many illegal activities to count, and with Barney’s signature on every piece of document that holds the proof of the extent of the company’s corruption— well, most of the guilt would fall on his shoulders, clearing his boss and many of the place’s employees. Little do people know, however... Where they can be found: MacLaren’s Pub, Ted Mosby’s apartment (whichever one he owns at the time, really; it’s the gang’s secondary clubhouse and even when/if it isn’t, it remains Barney’s clubhouse), Goliath National Bank, The Lusty Leopard (other strip clubs not entirely excluded), his own apartment “The Fortress of Barnitude”,  various beds, walls and other ‘surfaces’ across grand ‘ole New York City. Favourite food type: Primarily really American food (think hamburgers, the American thick-crusted pizza, hotdogs, etc. While in general he can be picky in terms of foreign dishes, it’s really not to the extent that he makes it out to be. Don’t hand him Canadian food, though, unless you lie and pretend it’s American. Favourite alcoholic drink: A scotch, neat; go-to brand being Glen McKenna (which is a fictional brand; but likely similar to Glenlivet and/or Henry McKenna) Favourite traits: Have you met Robin? No, not asking in that way— have you actually met her? Right there, everything about her, favourite’d. And yes, I’ll use that word often with him. Where would they go on a date: Okay, let’s get one thing straight before I properly answer this— whatever process Barney puts all women except Robin, Nora and Quinn through before they head back to his place or hers, cannot and should never be considered ‘dates’. Now that we got that out of the way, the guy has good heart to him and will be mindful to take her to a place he knows she favourites or would enjoy greatly. Ideal gift: A gift to receive or one to give? I didn’t quite know when I answered this thing the first time for a different muse and I still haven’t figured it out now. Let’s stick to what he’d give; again, he’s more sentimental than he likes to admit and he recalls details of things you enjoy as long as you’re part of his inner circle, his friends, the gang. The guy may seem one way, but he’s got heart, I promise. When will they drink alcohol: Any time he visits MacLaren’s ... or his apartment, or Ted’s. How many dates until they go to bed: In his mind, the first one with almost all women isn’t and shouldn’t in any which way, ever, be considered a date.

Thelma Gracen & Milli Vernon – The Best Voices That Time Forgot (Fresh Sound)
Tumblr media
youtube
Tirelessly active in the increasingly thankless realm of classic jazz reissue stewardship, producer Jordi Pujol is deserving of both copious thanks for his efforts and no small amount of consternation at how he keeps at it. The Best Voices That Time Forgot embodies the latest in a long line of series proffered under his Fresh Sound banner. The mission is to mine the work of abandoned jazz singers of yore, aspiring talents who for whatever reasons failed to reach the professional heights of peers from their own era. The format is that of the two-fer, pairing vintage albums by singers who may or may not be stylistically similar. In the case of Thelma Gracen and Milli Vernon, names who fit the mantle of the forgotten without argument, the common ground is that of a combination of tiny label contracts and songbooks of standards.
Separated by coasts and the span of several months between 1955-1956 both women benefit from crackerjack backing bands on their respective sessions. Gracen, whose proclivities also included outright pop songs, negotiates a program also populated by a handful of jazz standards. Swing veteran tenorist Georgie Auld fronts the Los Angeles-based sextet in her service alongside guitarist Barney Kessel and pianist Lou Levy. The twelve tunes are all jukebox-sized with only two surpassing four minutes, which leaves the bulk of space to Gracen’s graceful and ingratiating interpretation of song verse starting with a suitably sultry take on “I’ll Remember April.” Limited in range, there remains lilting intonation to her confident phrasing that complements Auld’s assured, vibrato-laced support. Kessel and Levy’s gilded chords work well in tandem and apart and drummer Sid Bulkin (now as forgotten as Gracen) keeps supple swishing beat with brushes.
Vernon is a shade more openly emotive in contrast to the cooler shadings of her counterpart. Pianist Dave McKenna and guitarist Jimmy Raney join the indisputable ace on the roster that is Jo Jones, a swing drumming pioneer who brings his customary panache to the date despite receiving no sonic favors from the Manhattan studio engineer. Trumpeter Ruby Braff joins the action on most tunes and journeyman bassist Wyatt Rhuter who shared Bulkin’s anonymity even in the 20th century completes the combo. “Spring is Here” teams Vernon with Raney’s spare chords to winsome effect before Jones leads the delayed entry of the rest of the crew and the singer playfully tests her range with a couple of belted verses. “St. James Infirmary” proves her mettle on more antiquated if authentic fare, benefiting greatly from the bucolic Braff’s muted interjections and Raney’s clip-clop fret effects. Gracen and Vernon are gone, but thanks to Pujol, no longer forgotten.
