Statement of Hazel Rutter regarding a fire in her childhood home. Original statement given August 9th, 1992. Audio recording by Jonathan Sims, The Archivist. Statement begins.
Hello, John.
Apologies for the deception, but I wanted to make sure you started reading, so I thought it best not to announce myself.
I’m assuming you’re alone; you always did prefer to read your statements in private. I wouldn’t try too hard to stop reading; there’s every likelihood you’ll just hurt yourself. So just listen.
According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway because bees don't care what humans think is impossible. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Ooh, black and yellow! Let's shake it up a little. Barry! Breakfast is ready! Coming! Hang on a second. Hello? Barry? Adam? Can you believe this is happening? I can't. I'll pick you up. Looking sharp. Use the stairs, Your father paid good money for those. Sorry. I'm excited. Here's the graduate. We're very proud of you, son. A perfect report card, all B's. Very proud. Ma! I got a thing going here. You got lint on your fuzz. Ow! That's me! Wave to us! We'll be in row 118,000. Bye! Barry, I told you, stop flying in the house! Hey, Adam. Hey, Barry. Is that fuzz gel? A little. Special day, graduation. Never thought I'd make it. Three days grade school, three days high school. Those were awkward. Three days college. I'm glad I took a day and hitchhiked around The Hive. You did come back different. Hi, Barry. Artie, growing a mustache? Looks good. Hear about Frankie? Yeah. You going to the funeral? No, I'm not going. Everybody knows, sting someone, you die. Don't waste it on a squirrel. Such a hothead. I guess he could have just gotten out of the way. I love this incorporating an amusement park into our day. That's why we don't need vacations. Boy, quite a bit of pomp under the circumstances. Well, Adam, today we are men. We are! Bee-men. Amen! Hallelujah! Students, faculty, distinguished bees, please welcome Dean Buzzwell. Welcome, New Hive City graduating class of 9:15. That concludes our ceremonies And begins your career at Honex Industries! Will we pick our job today? I heard it's just orientation. Heads up! Here we go. Keep your hands and antennas inside the tram at all times. Wonder what it'll be like? A little scary. Welcome to Honex, a division of Honesco and a part of the Hexagon Group. This is it! Wow. Wow. We know that you, as a bee, have worked your whole life to get to the point where you can work for your whole life. Honey begins when our valiant Pollen Jocks bring the nectar to The Hive. Our top-secret formula is automatically color-corrected, scent-adjusted and bubble-contoured into this soothing sweet syrup with its distinctive golden glow you know as... Honey! That girl was hot. She's my cousin! She is? Yes, we're all cousins. Right. You're right. At Honex, we constantly strive to improve every aspect of bee existence. These bees are stress-testing a new helmet technology. What do you think he makes? Not enough. Here we have our latest advancement, the Krelman. What does that do?
Catches that little strand of honey that hangs after you pour it.
Saves us millions.
Can anyone work on the Krelman?
Of course. Most bee jobs are small ones.
But bees know that every small job, if it's done well, means a lot.
But choose carefully because you'll stay in the job you pick for the rest of your life.
The same job the rest of your life? I didn't know that.
What's the difference?
You'll be happy to know that bees, as a species, haven't had one day off in 27 million years.
So you'll just work us to death?
We'll sure try.
Wow! That blew my mind!
"What's the difference?"
How can you say that?
One job forever?
That's an insane choice to have to make.
I'm relieved. Now we only have to make one decision in life.
But, Adam, how could they never have told us that?
Why would you question anything? We're bees.
We're the most perfectly functioning society on Earth.
You ever think maybe things work a little too well here?
Like what? Give me one example.
I don't know. But you know what I'm talking about.
Please clear the gate. Royal Nectar Force on approach.
Wait a second. Check it out.
Hey, those are Pollen Jocks!
Wow.
I've never seen them this close.
They know what it's like outside The Hive.
Yeah, but some don't come back.
Hey, Jocks!
Hi, Jocks!
You guys did great!
You're monsters!
You're sky freaks! I love it! I love it!
I wonder where they were.
I don't know.
Their day's not planned.
Outside The Hive, flying who knows where, doing who knows what.
You can't just decide to be a Pollen Jock. You have to be bred for that.
Right.
Look. That's more pollen than you and I will see in a lifetime.
It's just a status symbol.
Bees make too much of it.
Perhaps. Unless you're wearing it and the ladies see you wearing it.
Those ladies?
Aren't they our cousins too?
Distant. Distant.
Look at these two.
Couple of Hive Harrys.
Let's have fun with them.
It must be dangerous being a Pollen Jock.
Yeah. Once a bear pinned me against a mushroom!
He had a paw on my throat, and with the other, he was slapping me!
Oh, my!
I never thought I'd knock him out.
What were you doing during this?
Trying to alert the authorities.
I can autograph that.
A little gusty out there today, wasn't it, comrades?
Yeah. Gusty.
We're hitting a sunflower patch six miles from here tomorrow.
Six miles, huh?
Barry!
A puddle jump for us, but maybe you're not up for it.
Maybe I am.
You are not!
We're going 0900 at J-Gate.
What do you think, buzzy-boy?
Are you bee enough?
I might be. It all depends on what 0900 means.
Hey, Honex!
Dad, you surprised me.
You decide what you're interested in?
Well, there's a lot of choices.
But you only get one.
Do you ever get bored doing the same job every day?
Son, let me tell you about stirring.
You grab that stick, and you just move it around, and you stir it around.
You get yourself into a rhythm.
It's a beautiful thing.
You know, Dad, the more I think about it,
maybe the honey field just isn't right for me.
You were thinking of what, making balloon animals?
That's a bad job for a guy with a stinger.
Janet, your son's not sure he wants to go into honey!
Barry, you are so funny sometimes.
I'm not trying to be funny.
You're not funny! You're going into honey. Our son, the stirrer!
You're gonna be a stirrer?
No one's listening to me!
Wait till you see the sticks I have.
I could say anything right now.
I'm gonna get an ant tattoo!
Let's open some honey and celebrate!
Maybe I'll pierce my thorax. Shave my antennae. Shack up with a grasshopper. Get a gold tooth and call everybody "dawg"!
I'm so proud.
We're starting work today!
Today's the day.
Come on! All the good jobs will be gone.
Yeah, right.
Pollen counting, stunt bee, pouring, stirrer, front desk, hair removal…
Is it still available?
Hang on. Two left!
One of them's yours! Congratulations!
Step to the side.
What'd you get?
Picking crud out. Stellar!
Wow!
Couple of newbies?
Yes, sir! Our first day! We are ready!
Make your choice.
You want to go first?
No, you go.
Oh, my. What's available?
Restroom attendant's open, not for the reason you think.
Any chance of getting the Krelman?
Sure, you're on.
I'm sorry, the Krelman just closed out.
Wax monkey's always open.
The Krelman opened up again.
What happened?
A bee died. Makes an opening. See? He's dead. Another dead one.
Deady. Deadified. Two more dead.
Dead from the neck up. Dead from the neck down. That's life!
Oh, this is so hard!
Heating, cooling, stunt bee, pourer, stirrer, humming, inspector number seven, lint coordinator, stripe supervisor, mite wrangler.
Barry, what do you think I should… Barry?
Barry!
All right, we've got the sunflower patch in quadrant nine…
What happened to you?
Where are you?
I'm going out.
Out? Out where?
Out there.
Oh, no!
I have to, before I go to work for the rest of my life.
You're gonna die! You're crazy! Hello?
Another call coming in.
If anyone's feeling brave, there's a Korean deli on 83rd that gets their roses today.
Hey, guys.
Look at that.
Isn't that the kid we saw yesterday?
Hold it, son, flight deck's restricted.
It's OK, Lou. We're gonna take him up.
Really? Feeling lucky, are you?
Sign here, here. Just initial that.
Thank you.
OK.
You got a rain advisory today, and as you all know, bees cannot fly in rain.
So be careful. As always, watch your brooms, hockey sticks, dogs, birds, bears and bats.
Also, I got a couple of reports of root beer being poured on us.
Murphy's in a home because of it, babbling like a cicada!
That's awful.
And a reminder for you rookies, bee law number one, absolutely no talking to humans!
All right, launch positions!
Buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz! Buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz! Buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz!
Black and yellow!
Hello!
You ready for this, hot shot?
Yeah. Yeah, bring it on.
Wind, check.
Antennae, check.
Nectar pack, check.
Wings, check.
Stinger, check.
Scared out of my shorts, check.
OK, ladies,
let's move it out!
Pound those petunias, you striped stem-suckers!
All of you, drain those flowers!
Wow! I'm out!
I can't believe I'm out!
So blue.
I feel so fast and free!

Public Eye - A Fixed Address (Season 4 Episode 7; 10 September 1969)
NOTE: This episode was recorded in colour but broadcast in black and white as ITV would not begin rolling out colour broadcasting until 15 November 1969. Nevertheless, the colour version seems to be the one currently available, appearing on DVD releases and Talking Pictures TV reruns. Though the majority of the episode is in colour, the opening titles and break bumpers remain in black and white.
Having quit Rylands' detective agency and been encouraged by Helen Mortimer (Pauline Delaney) to try and start up on his own again at the end of The Comedian's Graveyard, Frank Marker (Alfred Burke) is now actively attempting to do so and is looking for a new office to start again. Despite this, his probation officer Hull (John Grieve) is still unsure about Marker starting up on his own again and still feels Marker being a lone operator is a disadvantage like he did in Welcome to Brighton?.
Although Marker's quest to start up on his own again is the main plot, less time than you'd expect in this episode deals with this. In fact, significant time is also spent on 2 interesting subplots. One involves young couple Rosie (Deborah Grant) and Peter (Barrie Rutter) who are staying at Mortimer's boarding house. In the words of Mortimer, they have 'exhausted each other' physically over the past 4 nights, yet beyond that their relationship seems unhappy and becomes increasingly fractured with the loud and boisterous Peter in particular becoming ever nastier towards Rosie as the episode goes on, eventually walking out one night to sleep on the pier leaving Rosie in tears. This relationship is interestingly depicted and it's clear that this is a relationship that will not endure. It's also an apparently forbidden love since Rosie lies on the phone to her mother that she's staying with a female work friend instead.
The other subplot involves the sudden reappearance of Mortimer's husband Denis (Philip Brack). Back in Welcome To Brighton?, Hull told Marker that Helen was a widow, but it seems that Helen lied to Hull about that since it turns out that Denis had actually walked out on her 7 years ago instead. Helen is not happy to see her husband again to say the least and while at first his reappearance seems random, near the end the reason becomes clear: Denis has been offered a job in south-east Asia and he stands a better chance of getting it if he has a wife. Having packaged it as a chance for Helen to see the world, she sees right through this excuse and finally turns him down for good. The dynamic between the 2 is very interesting to see thanks to great performances from Brack and Delaney with their final exchange where they exchange fond memories of happier times before Denis offers Helen the chance of travelling with him being the highlight.
The relationship between Marker and Denis is also interesting to see with Marker taking an instant dislike to the rather smug Denis, having already been put in a bad mood by the fact Hull had let slip in their latest interview that Helen had told him about Marker's plans, which also leads to Marker treating Helen coldly for a while before making amends after Denis leaves.
But it's the main plot which offers some of this episode's best highlights. The scene where Marker is shown round the dilapidated old basement office he is interested in renting by Mrs Selvedge (Marie Sutherland) has shades of him being shown his equally run-down Birmingham office by estate agent Soutar in Don't Forget You're Mine which is a nice touch though played slightly less humorously this time.
The office was once owned by a now bankrupt tree surgery business and they've left behind a lot of paper with their letterhead on it which leads to a funny moment in the episode's closing scene where Marker suggests to Mortimer he takes on the name of the former company to make use of the branded paper.
Speaking of which, the final scene where Marker shows Mortimer round his office is really well-played with the performances of Burke and Mortimer together shining once more, their interesting relationship always having been a highlight of this season.
To put us in no doubt whatsoever that Marker is finally back in business as an inquiry agent, Marker receives his first call in his new Brighton office that he nevertheless turns down due to it not being a job for him, with it revealed that Mortimer had placed a newspaper ad for his services.
To further reinforce this return to normality and to end this season on a high note, the regular version of Robert Earley's theme tune finally returns (replacing the more slower-paced and downbeat version used for the majority of this season) for the unique end credits sequence which plays over Marker organizing his desk. It's a perfect end to a truly exceptional season of Public Eye that has been consistently high in quality throughout with top notch writing from Roger Marshall and the incredible performances of Alfred Burke, Pauline Delaney and others have perfectly matched the standard of the writing.
The next season would see Public Eye finally return to it's regular case-of-the-week format and (eventually) arrive in the bold new era of colour television but Roger Marshall would sit this one out and Frank Marker's stay in Brighton wouldn't last much longer…

Queen Latifah is the first female rapper to be named a Kennedy Center honoree
Queen Latifah has been named one of this year’s Kennedy Center honorees, making her the first female rapper to receive the prestigious annual award for lifetime achievement in the performing arts. The ceremony, which will take place on December 3 and be hosted by Gloria Estefan, will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, the Washington Post reports. --- Related Stories Queen Latifah took Tupac to a gay bar “I was like, ‘They’re gonna tear you out your clothes!’” --- “It will allow us a moment to be part of the fabric of America, which is really what we are,” Latifah told the New York Times of the ceremony, which is usually attended by the President. “It will be one night where the people who are in the highest offices in the most powerful nation in the world will honor hip-hop music and one of its daughters.” Get the Daily Brief The news you care about, reported on by the people who care about you. As the paper notes, Latifah is only the second hip-hop artist ever to be honored by the Kennedy Center, after LL Cool J in 2017. “It’s a pretty powerful night in America for American art,” she told the Washington Post. “To be part of that is very profound.” Billy Crystal, Dionne Warwick, and Bee Gees member Barry Gibb are also among the iconic performers who will be saluted at the 46th Kennedy Center Honors. “I think it’s kind of fun to be celebrating hip-hop at the same time we’re celebrating a guy who made disco and pop music so ubiquitous,” Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter told the Post, referring to Gibb. “Thank God for hip-hop,” Latifah said. “It’s hip-hop music that opened the door for me to do everything I’ve done. I’m really grateful for this art form that we developed that allowed us to be able to move and shake around this entire globe.” While the rapper and star of CBS’s The Equalizer has never publicly confirmed her sexuality, speculation has swirled for decades. In 2021, however, she acknowledged her longtime partner Eboni Nichols publicly for the first time, thanking her and their son Rebel in her acceptance speech for the BET Lifetime Achievement Award. She ended the speech by wishing viewers a “Happy Pride!” You are valid, loved, and heard. — Dionne Warwick (@dionnewarwick) December 1, 2020 Warwick has also been a longtime LGBTQ+ ally. As the Post notes, her 1985 hit “That’s What Friends Are For” with Gladys Knight, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder was the first recording dedicated to AIDS awareness. In 2020, she charmed queer fans when she tweeted that she was learning about all the different LGBTQ+ flags as well as pronouns. “Let’s all work together to be more knowledgeable and inclusive,” she wrote. http://dlvr.it/SrDhcV

Michael takes his 24th win to close in on Joey; Browne takes first podium finish.

Tuesday evening brough us more, warm and sunny weather. There was a large crowd gathered at Ballaugh Bridge for the Carole Nash Supertwin Race 1. Michael Dunlop started as favourite; but there was much interest in how Peter Hickman would fare on a bike that had completed just one lap of practice and was powered by a borrowed engine. At Glen Helen, it was Michael Dunlop who led on his SC Project Paton. Jamie Coward on the Steadplan Kawasaki was second, 4.5s down on Dunlop; with Mike Browne third on the Burrows RH Racing Paton. Peter Hickman (PHR Performance Yamaha) held fourth; Josh Brookes (Dafabet Kawasaki) was fifth and Stefano Bonetti (ILR Paton) was sixth. Dominic Herberston was the first rider to reach Ballaugh; he was followed by Michael Rutter (Batham’s Yamaha) who produced his normal stylish jump over the bridge. Jamie Coward was next; closely followed by Paul Jordan (Prez Kawasaki) who had started 10s before him. Dunlop was next and he gave us his usual front wheel landing. Josh Brookes and Pierre-Yves Bian (VAS Paton) gave us low flat jumps; Peter Hickman gave a nice jump with perfect rear wheel landing. The clocks showed that Dunlop led by 9.1s from Coward with Browne third. Hickman, Brookes and Rutter completed the top 6. Dunlop pulled away from the chasers and led by 11.6s at the Bungalow. As he came into the pits for the mandatory stop, his lead was 14.43s, after a lap at 121.229mph. Coward lapped at 119.697mph and Browne in third at 119.438mph. Hickman, Brookes and Rutter filled out the top 6. Hickman lost 7s in the pits and Rutter 14s; as his machine refused to restart. The leader board at Glen Helen showed Dunlop with a 19.4s lead over Coward; who was just 0.5s ahead of Browne. Hickman, Brookes and Bian completed the board. Dunlop was first on the road at Ballaugh; Coward next; both gave us front wheel landings. Best action of the lap came when Hickman arrived with Bian. They jumped in tandem; Hickman gave us the higher leap and they then powered away through the village inches apart. Dunlop added to his lead as the lap progressed; but at the Bungalow it was Browne who held second place due to a rapid climb of the mountain. As the final lap started Dunlop had a comfortable lead of 22s over Browne; so, no need for lap record pace. Browne was now 2.1s ahead of Coward; Hickman, Brookes and Bian completed the top 6. At Glen Helen; Michael led by 25.93s; whilst Browne was only 1.22s ahead of Coward. Dunlop gave a low flat jump; it was impressive as powered away almost brushing his shoulder on the bus stop wall. Hickman and Brookes gained the most style marks for their high jumps and perfect landings. Starting the mountain climb, Dunlop could afford to go into cruise mode; he led by 30.66s from Browne. Coward was giving it everything and was just 1.22s behind Browne. Despite easing off in the last few miles; Michael Dunlop set the fastest lap of the race at 121.905mph to win by 26.783s at a race average of 120.505mph. Browne’s final lap at 121.374mph enabled him to keep Coward at bay; the margin just 2.237s. Coward’s final lap of 121.362mph was his best of the race; his podium finish richly deserved. Hickman took fourth; Brookes fifth; both lapped at over 120mph; with Bian taking a deserved sixth after a very fine ride. Dominic Herbertson, Michael Rutter, Barry Furber (superb effort) and Rob Hodson completed the top 10. Michael Evans was best of the locals in 11th; debut boys Paul Cassidy and Jamie Cringle were 20th and 22nd respectively. The race has now been overshadowed by the sad news that popular Spanish rider Raul Torras Martinez lost his life in an accident at Alpine Cottage during the race. We send our condolences to his family and friends; he will be very much missed. May he rest in peace. Read the full article

42 | Hitchhikers | Fandom
Cultural references
The Allen Telescope Array, a radio telescope used by SETI, has 42 dishes in homage to the Answer.[2]
In the American TV show Lost, 42 is the last of the mysterious numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42. In an interview with Lostpedia, producer David Fury confirmed this was a reference to Hitchhiker's.[3]
The British TV show The Kumars at No. 42 is so named because show creator Sanjeev Bhaskar is a Hitchhiker's fan.[4]
The band Coldplay's album Viva la Vida includes a song called "42". When asked by Q if the song's title was Hitchhiker's-related, Chris Martin said, "It is and it isn't."[5]
The band Level 42 chose its name in reference to the book.[6]
The episode "42" of the British science fiction television series Doctor Who was named in reference to the Answer. Writer Chris Chibnall acknowledged that "it's a playful title".[7]
Ken Jennings, defeated along with Brad Rutter in a Jeopardy! match against IBM's Watson, writes that Watson's avatar which appeared on-screen for those games showed 42 "threads of thought," shown as colorful lines spinning around Watson's logo, and that the number was chosen in reference to this meme.[8]
The Hitchhiker knitting pattern, designed by Martina Behm, is a scarf with 42 teeth.[9]
In The Flash, Season 4, Episode 1, Cisco in trying to decipher what Barry is writing explicitly says that what Barry says might solve answer to the Life, the Universe and Everything, which Caitlin suggests is 42.[10]
In The X-Files, Fox Mulder lives in apartment 42. This has been acknowledged by the show's creator, Chris Carter, as a reference to Hitchhiker's.[11]
The number 47 appears often throughout the Star Trek franchise. When producer Rick Berman was asked about the unusual frequency of the number, he stated, "47 is 42, corrected for inflation."[12]
In the French comic series Ducobu (a non-sci-fi comedy about a hilariously ignorant student and his unending attempts at cheating at a maths test, in a Wile E. Coyote-esque style, there is a recurring gag that the only question Ducobu ever has to answer is "what is 6 multiplied by 7", and he never, ever figures out that the answer is 42.
The games developer Mens Sana Interactive released a computer game called "The Answer is 42" on Steam in December 2019. The game consists of 100 puzzles, each of which is a grid of numbers that must be connected to sum 42.
The 42nd episode of 'The Spawn Chunks' (a Minecraft podcast) is titled 'Life, The Universe and Pillaging

Assignment #1
Step 1
I read the NESARC codebook, and I decided to focus on alcohol dependence and family histories of depression and alcohol dependency. I’m still deciding on which variables to focus on (like number of immediate relatives dependent or an individual’s rate of alcohol consumption).
Step 2:
History of Family Depression + Alcohol Dependency
Step 3:
I have noticed in the past how parents often influence their child’s behavior. More so, I have been curious how the environment we grow up in and the people we associate with can influence our habits (good or bad). Some people imitate or inherit the physical and mental expressions seen from their parents and relatives. The adoption of the expressions and habits may not be immediate or obvious, but can have lasting impact.
Step 3
For my codebook I started in the given NESARC codebook and used sections 2D: Family History of Alcoholism, 3C: Alcohol Abuse and 4B: Family History of Depression.
Step 6
Donna M Coviello, Arthur I Alterman, John S Cacciola, Megan J Rutherford, Dave A Zanis, The role of family history in addiction severity and treatment response, Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, Volume 26, Issue 1, 2004, Pages 1-11, ISSN 0740-5472, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0740-5472(03)00143-0-https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0740547203001430)

Literature Review: Of the papers and reports reviewed a trend persisted concerning familial substance dependency and cross-generational depression. Coviello (et all) was the exception, noting in their study that for recovery dependents, there was no significant difference on how family history affected treatment seekers for alcoholic dependency. Blow et.al and Milne et al followed the prevailing trend that early exposure to substance dependency and the comorbid existence of cross-generational depression in parents and grandparents can exacerbate an individual’s symptoms later in life.
Step 7
My hypothesis: If an individual is exposed to paternal alcohol dependency and emotional depressive behavior then they are at a higher risk of developing those qualities later in life.
