Valentine’s Day Cards
Pretty much anyone can pop out to the shops to buy a card for someone.  Never mind the specialist cards shops, all major supermarkets and even small village shops have a display of greetings card for every occasion.  But how much more personal can it get than to give someone you love a handmade card for Valentine's Day?  A gorgeous handcrafted card with your own special message inside has to rank as something special.
In order to help you and provide that nudge of inspiration, we have searched out some examples you may wish to make for yourself.  Or these can be used as a starting point from which to travel off in your own direction.
The video below shows you how to make a straightforward card. You will need very little in the way of materials so this an easy one to try out if you don't have "all the gear".  You can always find an inexpensive set of watercolour paints online such as this set of 24 basic colours. Not being a painter or user of watercolours, the presenter's explanation about why the paint doesn't bleed into the marked out heart area was new to me and an interesting discovery.

The next tutorial shows how to make a Tic Tac Toe or Noughts and Crosses inspired card. One of the good things about this design is that it's pretty flexible and can be made with whatever you have lurking in your craft stash. Although, you'll no doubt really want to use some red paper or cardstock as it's for Valentine's Day after all! I really like the way the presenter uses an old cereal box to provide both the template and the backing for the heart embellishments. These are pretty small so would only use a small amount of paper making it ideal for using up any scraps you may have kept in the hope they'll be useful one day. I hate throwing things away unless they clearly won't come in handy and thus have plenty of odds and ends kept just "in case".

This next idea is a pretty simply one you can execute with items you most likely have to hand.  And the idea of using birthday candles would, of course, work for birthday cards too.  If you find that sticking the candles on the card is challenging due to the rounded nature of the candle, you could always use a vegetable peeler or small knife to give them a slightly flattened side.
Making your own homemade Valentine’s Day cards to go with that perfect store-bought present doesn’t have to be all that intimidating. We’re making it easy for you by providing the ideas—silly puns (“you light up my life” paired with candles; “ … but will also show them just how much you care.
Turn a birthday party prop into a loved one's bright spot on February 14. All you'll need to make this homemade Valentine's Day card is a blank note card, glue, and a felt tip marker. If you don’t have any blank cards on hand, simply fold a piece of construction paper or cardstock, and then get started. Via realsimple.com
This next video shows you how to make a pop up card for your Valentine which requires a few different techniques including quilling.  There is no "voiceover" giving instructions on this particular video but all steps are very clearly demonstrated.  The whole thing takes around 11 and a half minutes to watch.

For our final offering today, we think this pinwheel card looks gorgeous and hope you do too. It's made using a die cutting technique and features other techniques such as embossing. You may like to have a go at this yourself, or perhaps use it as inspiration for your own project. The materials for this particular card are set out below the video.

Five Stars This is a great book Go to Amazon
Loving the information on the various techniques! This is just the book for which I have been searching. The information is wonderfully provided and I will now be enjoying using these techniques. Go to Amazon
Creative and Informative I have just started making craft projects and this book was a lifesaver. Besides offering very creative projects, this book provides all the basic techniques of stamping. The author earns my gratitude by showing each method in a step-by-step manner, with photos at every step. However, this book also will satisfy the more experienced stamper. Go to Amazon
Clever, Creative, And Expensive I have loved all of the MaryJo McGraw stamping books that I've read. This is most likely my favorite. It is very creative. My favorite part about her books is that the cards actually look pretty, like something I'd want to duplicate myself. With other stamping books I didn't like the cards, and there was no way I wanted to use them as a guide even if their tecniques worked. Also the writing is fun and interesting, and not dull or preachy. My one problem with it is that to be able to make the cards you have to buy a lot of supplies. Overall the book in itself is very inspiring and worthwhile although it asks you to use many different supplies. Go to Amazon
Outstanding, innovative book! This is the best book on rubber stamping I have found. I've actually been able to do some of the techniques with success!!!! Go to Amazon
GREAT source of ideas for artistic rubber stamping Once again, MaryJo demonstrates creative, artistic, and colorful examples of cards that can be created with rubber stamps. The book is filled with full color, easy to follow steps for each technique. I never realized that you could do so much with embossing powder, vellum, wax and bleach. This is a MUST HAVE book for anyone that wants to achieve professional looking results with rubber stamps on their handmade greeting cards. Go to Amazon
WHAT AN INSPIRATION! As a seasoned rubber stamper I found this 2nd book by MaryJo's to be even BETTER then her first (Making Greeting Cards with Rubber Stamps) book! In this one she takes stamping a step further sharing her experience and techniques to show fast, easy and quick ways to create cards that LOOK LIKE they took a lot of time to make! Guaranteed to wow your stamping and non-stamping friends! Great job MaryJo! Go to Amazon
This is a wonderful book! I was really inspired by this book. Maryjo shows us several unique techniques that are more than just basic cards. If you are looking for great artsy projects, you need to get this book. Maryjo shows us all how to look at our stamping supplies in a different way. If you want to create stunning one of a kind works of art, this is the book for you! Go to Amazon
elegant and simple ideas This book will make you look like a professional artist! GREAT TECHNIQUES AND IDEAS! Creative Ideas For "Rubber Stampers"! Making Greeting Cards with Rubber Stamps is a better book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving the information on the various techniques!
5.0 out of 5 stars Creative and Informative I have just started making craft projects and this book was a lifesaver. Besides offering very creative projects, this book provides all the basic techniques of stamping. The author earns my gratitude by showing each method in a step-by-step manner, with photos at every step. However, this book also will satisfy the more experienced stamper. In the first chapter, the author gives a detailed list of helpful tools and materials, a small library of quirky images, and the basics of inking and cleaning stamps. In the second chapter on embossing, the author first lists basic materials and tips. Then, she gives "receipes" and instructions for particular projects. Some are more complicated than others. Finally, the author gives an "endless possibility" section that provides instructions without the step-by-step photos. This is because these projects all build on the basic tecniques so it would be redundant to include them. My favorite project in this chapter is the Deco-Roman-looking flute player superimposed over sheet music. The third chapter follows the format of the second chapter in how it is set up, but all the projects involve embedded stamps. This method is "a bit tricky" as the author says, because it involves heat, but looks impressive. It gives a 3-D effect to the stamped image. The fourth chapter describes how to add vellum to your projects. This chapter also has basic techniques and tips upon which are built more, but do-able, projects. I like the use of tassles with the vellum.Chapters five and eight describe embellishments and how to combine previously mentioned techniques. Chapter five focusses on beading and sealing wax.Read more › Go to Amazon
