MK Lightning ease to biggest win of the season against Basingstoke Bison
.MKL_Official ease to biggest win of the season against Basingstoke Bison
The Smith Recycling-sponsored MK Lightning chalked up a scintillating performance and biggest win of the season so far with an 8-2 victory over Basingstoke Bison at MK Arena on Saturday.
Lightning came out flying, determined to avenge the previous weekend’s defeat in Hampshire and they were soon rewarded, being two goals to the good within the first six minutes.
It was not until the latter stages…

Player Spotlight | Bari McKenzie
“It was an absolute honour and a privilege to be a part of Fife this year. I didn’t realise it at the time but it’s a huge achievement. I’m certainly not still going to be playing for their 90th or 100th. I might be watching though.” Bari Mckenzie begins as we sit down to talk about his move to the team.

An Interview With Anthony Russell
Tumblr media
Let’s start at the beginning. How did you first get into ice hockey?
I was obviously aware of the sport but I got into it living in Germany. I was working in a primary school as part of my year abroad for my degree. For your readers that have never been to Germany, lots of towns have these giant cylinders that have adverts for upcoming shows or gigs or whatever. There was a big poster saying “Neue Futterzeit, 19uhr Sonntag, REC Piranhas” so I thought I'd give it a go. I went and it's been a fun ride since then.
The Basingstoke Bison are undoubtedly your team, but you’re also a Rostock Piranhas and Washington Capitals fan. Would you say there’s any correlation between the teams that explains you picking them, or are they picks for differing reasons?
Rostock and Basingstoke occupy equal placing in my heart as it were.  Rostock were the team that got me into the sport and I won't forget that.  It's not exactly the hockey hotbed of Germany up there on the coast of the Baltic Sea but the people and the club have embraced me as one of their own.  I'm actually due back over there in January with my wife and I can't wait to be “home”.
When I came back from Germany, I was in my final year of studying but wanted to watch hockey.  Being based in Southampton I had a choice of the Isle of Wight or Basingstoke but I went to Basingstoke first as it was actually easier to get to.  That was November 2005 and I've not stopped. Where I sort of tripped over hockey in Rostock and fell in love with it there, I chose the Bison and I've stuck with it. Through bad ownership, through EIHL and EPL, it's my bit of escapism every week but again the people in Basingstoke are great.  The Bison are my weekly hockey fix so it's important that I enjoy that.
The Caps dates back to when I was in Germany.  I lived there in the 2004/05 lockout and Olie Kolzig was playing for Eisbären Berlin at the time and I saw him on TV and liked the way he played. My favourite player in Rostock at the time was our goalie, Branislav “Happy Hippo” Hippik so goalies were of interest for me.  I decided I'd keep an eye on Kolzig so went with the Caps. First season after the lockout was also Alex Ovechkin's first season which had a few highlights too but it's Godzilla's influence that drew me to Washington.  I was lucky enough to go there on my honeymoon and see the practice facility and part of rookie camp.  I'll make it there for a regular season game one day.
Banners On The Wall is one of our favourite hockey reads, what persuaded you to start writing about the team?
I used to tweet a lot from games on my own account which had a good dose of sarcasm thrown in.  At the time, club photographer Grant King was doing updates and taking photos so he suggested to someone I do it as I was doing it anyway.  I said OK but I still wanted an outlet for my hockey thoughts.  I tweeted out asking if people would read what I have to say, a few said yes so I went for it.  That was March 2011 and I used that summer to refine some of the stuff I was doing.  It's been an interesting ride and I'm always looking for ways to keep moving forward with how I write but also what I write.  I like writing, it's a lot of fun and hockey, the sport that I watch week in, week out is the prism that gets used as the filter for that desire to write.  It works for me on a variety of levels and I'm lucky that people find it interesting and want to read what I say.
For those readers who haven’t really checked out EPIHL hockey, what should they expect and who are the Bison players they should look out for?
EPIHL isn't the highest standard of hockey in Britain of course, that's the Elite League but you will get good, hard, fast entertaining hockey for a decent price for the most part.  Parity seems to be a buzzword for those who talk about the EIHL and bringing that to the league but they're not there yet and I'm not massively enamoured by the plans they have in place to try and achieve it, though I credit them for trying to address the issue.  There is more parity in the EPL than any league in British hockey at the moment. That's not to say that won't change given the arms race that is now starting but if you really want the league where you have the most chance of any team winning on any given night I'd say it's the EPL.  That's not to say there's not teams that are overcharging for the product but as an overall experience I think most fans of other levels can enjoy it and the total novice can as well.
If you're looking at the Bison, the obvious place to start is Kurt Reynolds.  Reynolds remains one of the standout defensive players in the EPL, British or import and is just so much fun to watch.  The other one I'd probably pick is Tomas Karpov.  He's a product of Sparta Prague and you can see he's thinking that much quicker than anyone else. That said the entire Bison squad is actually good across the board, our 4th line of Danny Ingoldsby, Stuart Mogg and Cameron Wynn has an average age of 18 and are all local lads which is great to watch; honest development of local talent in the EPL.
If we made you coach/GM for the day, what one thing about the Bison would you most like to change?
Apart from trying to lower the penalty minute count there's not much I'd change bar working to address the British hockey wide issue of contracts.  I'd also attempt to make a more formal link with the Basingstoke Buffalo so there's a more natural pathway from the Bison u18s to NIHL to EPL.
Last question from us, if you could do one thing to increase the profile of hockey in the UK what would it be and why?
I think a lot of it is actually down to the clubs and the leagues working better together in terms of raising the profile. IHUK need to run the sport better, that's a given but raising the profile needs to be the leagues and the clubs in cooperation to work on a local and national level.  Obviously there's only x number of ice rinks but there's stuff that could be done.  The EIHA does nothing for the EPL or NIHL clubs in that regard whereas the Elite League has done a much better job.  For all the dislikes people have of the television shows that have been put out (and I disliked the Sky show, it was a poor product) this league has still managed to get on 2 major sports channels.  The teams under the EIHA banner are kind of left to fend for themselves so there's the Bison promoting the Bison and the Raiders promoting the Raiders but nobody promoting EPL hockey as a brand and nobody promoting NIHL hockey as a brand and I don't know why that hasn't occurred to the EIHA to work with the EIHL and IHUK in terms of learning how to promote the sport to that wider audience.  Yes that costs money to you have to invest to reap the reward.  It's not about TV per se but maybe help with access to wider media be it radio spots or local papers and with a bit of the weight of the national body behind teams to do stuff, maybe more can get done.
Thanks for your time Anthony, anything else you’d like to mention?
http://bannersonthewall.wordpress.com is the site so do check that out as we do other bits now and then. I'll be writing up the three games I see in Germany too so check those out. The other thing I'd say (and I know the Marek vs Wyshynski podcast has talked about this a lot recently) if you're umming and ahing as to whether you should do a blog or do a podcast or anything like that, do it. Give it a go and that's not just for hockey, that's for anything. If you work hard, you'll get good.  The cream rises to the top with everything and it's same in this weird little world of British hockey fan created content. Those that started for a bit of fun a while ago are the ones that are the best because the people put the effort in to make it good. That shouldn't put you off, use that as a model to work towards and get better. Be the best hockey blogger you can be, be the best rugby podcaster you can be or the best knitting blogger you can be or whatever.  If you want to write something hockey related but maybe want to do it as a one off and it's suitable for BOTW then let me know and I'll put it out there if needs be.  If you're going to do it though, don't half arse it.  People will know.
Auf gehts REC! Let's go Bison!
A big thank you to Anthony for giving up his time to answer our questions. You can follow him on twitter @84arussell and check out his work at the address aboce
If you’ve got any feedback, you can tweet me @MattMerritt. I’d love to hear from anyone who takes the time to read the blog!
If you’re a hockey player/coach/team manager in a competitive league, or you write about your local team or the wider game, I’d love to ask you some questions too, please get in touch either here or via twitter!

MK Lightning return to MK Arena for Basingstoke Bison clash
.@MKL_Official to return to MK Arena for Basingstoke Bison clash
After a week without a home game, this Saturday (17/10) the Milton Keynes Lightning host a very tough opposition in the form of the Basingstoke Bison at the MK Arena at 7pm.
Last weekend saw the Lightning play a rare back to back away weekend at Basingstoke on Saturday, and then up in Sheffield on Sunday. This also saw the end of a long run of games in which MKL played 8 games in 16 days.
