Match Review: Coventry City 3-3 Manchester United (2-4 on penalties)
It's a game of two halves... unless you're Man Utd then it's a game of four halves and penalties because YOU BOTTLED A THREE NIL FUCKING LEAD \skjgvblrkehdbkvbrzd dickheads.
Tumblr media
For all people think hey, United were 2-0 up at half time... the game didn't start particularly well. It was slow to the point of being irritating, because these are professional footballers and I think me at 34 with asthma, a ligament injury, and the need to lose 2 stone in weight could probably have pressed the fuckers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That said, United took an early lead through Scott McTominay moments later because the man who has no positional discipline will always lose himself, and thus any marker, to crash into the box and bang in a true poacher's finish. Shame he does fuck all else.
We then doubled our lead late in the first half through a banger Harry Maguire header from a corner. Everything was going well...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maguire, in fairness, had a very good game (bar one whopper pass to Coventry for absolutely no fucking reason). A goal was well earned and he did his job well overall. Strong in the air, robust in challenges and duels, and didn't go to ground willy-nilly ala Casemiro. Nice. I will say that he's a big part of our issues on the ball, because he's not a ball-playing CB. He's too slow to take touches and make decisions. The way round this is to partner him with a ball-player (Casemiro) and a good receiver with mobility/agility/scanning (Mainoo) which is why things worked until Mainoo went off. Then it was Eriksen (ruh roh) which forces passes to... Casemiro (slow), AWB (out of position), Eriksen (slow), McTominay (oh wait he's not where he should be).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The problem is that United then went and bagged a third in the second half, a deflected effort from Bruno, and we're thinking fuck... this could be a rout. United haven't given a team a good slapping in a while.
LOL only joking. Sub off our one disciplined midfielder in Mainoo, on comes Christian 'No Legs' Eriksen (why the fuck is McTominay still on?), and then watch as our game control jumps out the fucking window. Unreal.
Don't get me wrong, Eriksen is a smart player - ala Juan Mata - but legs matter at this level. He hasn't got them. He can't be a passenger in our team. In a Man City side, sure. He'd be the right football intelligence and Pep would use his squad depth and talent to compensate for the inclusion. Manchester United ain't that dog.
Cue the comeback of all comebacks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then Coventry got a second. The crowd is FERVENT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THEN THEY FUCKING EQUALISED LADS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Extra time rolled around and honestly, either side could have won it; Bruno cracked a shot off the underside of the bar and back out - nice - and then Coventry ran all over us for a while until it was time for penalties.
Tumblr media
Erik Ten Hag has my support in principle, but his in-game management is really hard to defend because he's treating decisions as if there's no consequence. I don't mean that in the sense of job loss, I mean in the sense of game change. Antony on did fuck all. Eriksen on did fuck all. McTominay bar a goal did fuck all (but he scored - fuck off, he just floats around aimlessly, bellend).
Then, late into the tie, on comes Amad for a seemingly injured Rashford. He then proceeds to dribble better and make better movement and create more space than any of our other wide men. Nice. Maybe sub him on earlier?
Tumblr media
So yes, penalties. Up steps Casemiro and... wow. He really did that. Hand in your boots, your Carrington ID, and don't come in for work. Take it as garden leave and just chill until we sell you in the summer, you useless mercenary prick.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luckily, our other penalty takers in Dalot, Eriksen, Bruno and Hojlund all know how to score, and Onana was able to save one whilst the Sky Blues captain aimed for the sky as he blazed his take over. United win 4-2 and go through to the final. Cue every United fan old and young proceeding to search for more spirits to drink than is legally safe in the strained hope of blotting this from our collective memories because FUCK ME WAS THAT POOR.
You can blame ETH for his poor subs and not respecting that Coventry > our squad depth. I can and I did. But you also have to recognise that players being shit is on them. Antony should be tearing Coventry a new arsehole. Same for Rashford. McTominay should own that midfield. Hojlund missed a sitter, the sausage (I can't hate my boy, not yet).
Tumblr media
I feel sorry for the fans. I feel sorry for the chap above most of all. Imagine making that effort to see what he saw. We won, we're into a final, it's another City v United derby at Wembley, and it was another all-time memorable tie for United... but fuck me that was painful and embarrassing.
For Sir Jim watching, surely even he can see the problems? No LB, no ball playing CB (Case really doesn't count), no true RW, no alternate CF, no midfield pivot, no fucking clue.
I'm not entirely sure United's players are dense and clueless morons, mind. I think most of them are weak-minded; they let the fear takeover and their heads drop too easily and they should be at "lesser" clubs where the pressure's off a bit - like Andreas Pereira at Fulham. Took a step down, now he's flourishing. Some people aren't cut out for the limelight, and it seems most of United's squad fit the bill there. Another rebuild is needed, but maybe INEOS can do what others couldn't before them...

Home must be where the heart is
Just 11 games to go in this rather topsy turvey season for North End as we go into the final quarter of the campaign with a home game against Stoke City. This follows on from a rather strange and somewhat unusual week for North End that started with a slightly disappointing home draw against Hull City last Saturday followed by the late postponement of the game at Southampton on Wednesday evening. One glance at the league table tells you that there was not too much damage done but North End are still playing catch up. With Southampton and West Brom still to play away it is vital that there are no more slip ups at home. Yes we have to face Leicester in the last home game but Stoke, Rotherham, Huddersfield and Norwich are all winnable and North End must take 12 points from their last five home games to keep us in with a shout. The other four trips on the road should yield points with visits to Plymouth, Birmingham, Watford and QPR on the run in schedule. I think we need a further 10 points from the six away games which would leave us with 75 and we just need to hope that the others have a little wobble.
Against the Tigers last Saturday North End failed to find the net for the first time in a while but fair play to Hull as they defended stoutly when they had to and always posed a threat on the break. To be honest I thought they were two evenly matched teams and along with Coventry , Norwich and West Brom they will be contenders for those fifth and sixth spots in the final analysis. The big talking point of the game was a penalty shout early in the second half when Will Keane was pulled back just as he was about to poke home a rebound from a Riis effort. It was a stonewall spot kick in my opinion and how the referee and his assistant haven`t seen it just beggars belief. The North End fans were not slow in letting the referee know what they thought of this blatant offence.
On Wednesday evening almost 700 North End fans set off from various starting points to make their way to St Marys Stadium. Unfortunately a dangerous blaze almost adjacent to St Marys saw the game called off round about 4pm just as our car was approaching Newbury. Obviously no one is to blame and it was a decent gesture by North End to refund half the coach money back to those who travelled or offset it against the cost when the game finally goes ahead. Around 50+ North End fans made their way to AFC Totton for a local non-league cup tie and were made very welcome by the hosts who let the North Enders in for free. A great gesture by the home club and maybe a pre-season friendly might be on the cards in the Summer as the manager of Totton is Jimmy Ball who is the grandson of the late great Alan Ball Senior and so the clubs definitely have links.
On Saturday we welcome Steve Schumacher to Deepdale for the second time this season. Schumacher was in charge of Plymouth when we beat them 2-1 in the Autumn and he brings his Stoke City side to Deepdale in a spot of bother. At the point of writing Stoke sit third bottom of the Championship and in danger of the trap door. Of their eighteen games away this season they have won four, drawn four and lost ten, scoring nineteen goals and conceding twenty eight. No games are given in this division as we all know but this is an opportunity for North End to carry on their good run and if other results help us a little then the Championship table could look very interesting by the end of the weekend as North End hope to continue their late run to the play offs.
And finally this week:- Saturday is the dedicated @HerGameToo game! There are girls teams taking part in the half time penalties and a guard of honour for the players! Please support in any way you can as Women have just as much right to be inside Deepdale as the men do. Football is for all.
North End`s ambassador is Kim Ramshead ( @kimramshead ) who you will find on Social Media to answer any of your questions.

MATCH REPORT: READING (0) 2 CHARLTON ATHLETIC (0) 0
EFL ONE : Saturday 10 February, 2024 : 3pm kick-off
A tale of two halves, although, despite some slick passing from Charlton, more so first half, Reading never looked in any danger of losing this match, such was their confident dominance.
The first 45 lacked goals and there was an early 3 min spell of time-wasting from both teams which made the game go flat. After the break, more energy and the most chances; AZEEZ blasted in two rockets, 66 & 76 mins, and could have had a hat-trick but blazed over the bar, again going for power.
When Charlton did break into the final third, Reading's defence blocked and tackled superbly, in particular YIADOM but the human dynamo, MBENGUE gets my MOTM - an impressive performance.
Plenty of endeavour too from SMITH in the hoops and he nearly scored from two / three chances, but for me, there's still an over reliance on him to do the business upfront.
The ref, Craig Hicks, was generally fussy but still maintained good control overall although, 2nd period, he perhaps should have clamped down on two instances of Royals players being kicked up into the air by issuing cards. That said, he was fair to both sides.
The Reds definitely employed some spoiling tactics, which is a pity, as many of their side can play. In fact, only a super save from BUTTON prevented it ending 2-1.
Even four days into a new job, you would have thought new manager Nathan Jones would have perceived that, but I strongly suspect he set out to secure an away point, but rightly his negativity was rewarded with a 2-0 loss. Food for thought.
Reading are now up to 18th and continue to defy their critics as they search to maintain their League One presence, despite points deductions and fines (hundreds of Reading fans dressed as clowns or wore clown masks -as issued, to protest against the owner).
Reading: Button, Mola (Dorsett '60), Knibbs, Savage (Craig '88), Smith, Azeez (Elliott '88), Ehibhatiomhan (Mukairu '78), Yiadom © (Abrefa '88), Bindon, Mbengue, Wing. Subs not used: Pereira, Wareham.
Charlton Athletic: Isted, Jones, Thomas, May ©, Ladapo, Edu, Watson (Campbell '80), Watson, Gillesphey (Edmonds-Green '45), Bakinson, Coventry (Camara '79). Subs not used: Maynard-Brewer, Kanu, Anderson, Ramsey.
RDG MOTM = Amadou Mbengue, quick, energetic, classy performance.
CHARLTON MOTM = Harry Isted, kept the score down and all round, very competent GK display.
Attendance = 14,554
ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: 7/10

🏒🇬🇧🌭
Disappointing result tonight at the hockey for Blaze's home opener, considering their performance last night and in the pre-season, however good to get back to the games again with the lovely @oncem0reuntothebreach (and there was a spectacular dust up in the third period that left one guy without a face so it wasn't a total waste)
