Sly5thAve - Liberation - leading a whole orchestra on his new album
‘Liberation’ is the third solo LP from composer, arranger, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Sly5thAve. Layered with orchestral arrangements, jazz improvisation and Hip-Hop production, ‘Liberation’ is an accomplished record of courage, musical conviction, and growth. Known for his sophisticated compositions, Sylvester Uzoma Onyejiaka II AKA Sly5thAve’s first experiences with large scale arranging were with the Club Casa Chamber Orchestra and recording instrumental covers of popular modern songs. Notably, his orchestral tribute to Dr. Dre, ‘The Invisible Man,’ garnered widespread praise and attention, even earning the admiration of Dr. Dre himself. Through these recordings Sly5thAve felt he had found a way to make people connect with orchestral music; “I’ve long felt orchestras around the world are inaccessible to most people – whether it be the programming or the cost, or the location”. The LP is Sly5thAve’s first full album of original orchestral arrangements and features the musicianship of Sly5thAve’s collaborators and Ghost Note bandmates - headed by Snarky Puppy's multi-Grammy–winning percussion duo Robert “Sput” Searight and Nate Werth, alongside previous collaborator Roberto Verástegui. The sisters are content leading separate but happy lives in their hometown of Potomac Point until everything is upended by lies that force them to confront unsettling truths about their family, themselves, and each other. Gender Rebels by Anneka Harry, Pages: 277, Publication Date: 1 June 2020
Synopsis: Meet the unsung sheroes of history: the diverse, defiant and daring (wo)men who changed the rules, and their identities, to get sh*t done.
You’ll encounter Kit Cavanagh, the swaggering Irish dragoon who was the first woman to be buried in London with full military honours; marauding eighteenth-century pirates Mary Read and Anne Bonny, who collided on the high seas after swapping their petticoats for pantaloons; Ellen Craft, an escaped slave who masqueraded as a white master to spirit her husband-to-be to freedom; and Billy Tipton, the swinging jazz musician, who led a double life as an adult, taking five wives along the way. Then there are the women who still have to dress like men to live their best lives, like the inspirational football-lovers in Iran, who risk everything to take their place in the stands.
A call to action for the modern world, this book celebrates the #GenderRebels who paved the way for women everywhere to be soldiers and spies; kings and queens; firefighters, doctors, pilots; and a Swiss Army knife’s-worth more. These superbly spirited (wo)men all had one thing in common: they defied the rules to progress in a man’s world.

Sorry I Missed You by Suzy Krause, Pages: 315, Publication Date: 1 June 2020
Synopsis: A poignant and heartwarming novel about friendship, ghosting, and searching for answers to life’s mysteries.
When Mackenzie, Sunna, and Maude move into a converted rental house, they are strangers with only one thing in common—important people in their lives have “ghosted” them. Mackenzie’s sister, Sunna’s best friend, and Maude’s fiancé—all gone with no explanation.
So when a mangled, near-indecipherable letter arrives in their shared mailbox—hinting at long-awaited answers—each tenant assumes it’s for her. The mismatched trio decides to stake out the coffee shop named in the letter—the only clue they have—and in the process, a bizarre kinship forms. But the more they learn about each other, the more questions (and suspicions) they begin to have. All the while, creepy sounds and strange happenings around the property suggest that the ghosts from their pasts might not be all that’s haunting them…
Will any of the housemates find the closure they are looking for? Or are some doors meant to remain closed?
Quirky, humorous, and utterly original, Sorry I Missed You is the perfect read for anyone who has ever felt haunted by their past (or by anything else).

She does—amid the squalid life to which she was born, the cruelties of her small-minded neighbors, and violence in a constant threat of eruption. CANTLON: ZBROVSKIY CUT LOOSE BY THE RANGERS
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - For a second time in two months, the New York Rangers have placed a Russian born defenseman on unconditional waivers in order to terminate their contract. Last month, Alexei Bereglazov was cut loose and on Thursday, after clearing waivers, it was Sergey Zbrovskiy. He wasn't available long as he signed a two year deal with HK Sochi (Russia-KHL). This is part of the plan the Rangers have had since announcing their rebuilding plans in February. They are starting to clear contracts and personnel space as they enter the NHL Draft this weekend and free agency period that begins on July 1st. The moves that are happening and will be happening over the course of the next few days will alleviate the glut of defenseman as several new names will be coming on board. Zbrovskiy played ten games with the Wolf Pack on injury recalls. He had no points, earned 10 PIM and was a plus-one. He spent most of the year with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, who were the Pack’s (ECHL) Double AA affiliate. While there, Zbrovskiy skated in 47 game amassing 17 points on 5 goals and 12 assists. He was a minus-10. The Russian d-man is a former third round pick (79th overall) in the 2015 draft. He came to the organization after playing at Regina (WHL) for three seasons under the tutelage of former Wolf Pack coach, John Paddock. ___________ The AHL-to-Europe list added five more names this week. The Sound Tigers lost goalie Kristers Gudlevskis, who heads back home to play for Dynamo Riga (Latvia-KHL). Charlotte says goodbye to Sergei Tolchinsky who signed with CSKA Moscow (Russia-KHL). Two players are heading to the KHL to play for Barys Astana (Kazakhstan). The two players are RW Patrice Cormier (Manitoba) and Curtis Valk (Springfield), who dominated the Wolf Pack over the last two years. Another Springfield Thunderbird who split the year with Florida (ECHL), and who just played in the Kelly Cup Final, Matt MacKenzie has left to sign with HC Bolzano (Italy-AEHL). Those moves make it 30 players and one coach to make the move East. So far, 17 AHL teams have lost at least one player. One more collegian has left school to sign in Europe. Landon Smith of the Quinnipiac University Bobcats (ECACHL) signed with Karlskrona HK (Sweden-Allsvenskan) making 20 collegians that have signed in Europe. Bo Brauer of Notre Dame (Big 10) signs a contract with the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL) making 206 total collegians to sign pro deals in North America and Europe. Two others have transferred to Canadian colleges since the US college regular season ended. Ex-Sound Tiger defenseman, Cole Jarrett, leaves the Belfast Giants (Northern Ireland-EIHL) to play with the Braehead Clan (Scotland-EIHL). One player thought to be heading to Europe was Utica goalie Richard Bachman, however, he decided to stay and signed a nice deal to stay with the Comets. Vancouver signed Bachman to a two-year, two-way deal earning him $650K at the NHL and $275K if he plays in the AHL in the first year. He makes $700K in the NHL and the same $275K for playing in the American League in the second year. Former QU Bobcat goalie, Mike Garteig, is now fifth on the Canucks goalie depth chart. He sits behind Jakob Markstrom, ex-Sound Tiger, Anders Nilsson, prized prospect, Thatcher Demko, and Bachman. Toss in the team is paying off $800K per year of Roberto Luongo’s deal until 2021. Seems like it would make sense for Gartheig to look to get a better deal where he'll get playing time in the AHL at another organization after he was migrating between Utica, Alaska and Kalamazoo the last two years. While hockey has ended here, the regular season is underway in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) the top team currently is the CBR (Canberra) Brave that are led by former UCONN Husky, Trevor Gerling. In eleven games of their short thirty game season, Gerling has nine goals, 16 assists (25 points) which is good for third best in the AIHL. The Brave have a record of 9-2-0-0 for 27 points. Cheshire native, Rob Malloy, is playing in his sixth season in the AIHL. He's only played in just nine games and has four assists. Malloy is presently on the injured list for the fourth place Newcastle North Stars (4-4-0-2-2 18 points). In New Zealand, the NZIHL defending Birgel Cup champion, the Southern (Queenstown) Stampede are coached by Adam Blanchette (Berlin) a Hartford Jr. Wolf Pack alumni like Malloy. Read the full article

In Florida aftermath, US students say 'Never Again'

The students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School were well practised on how to respond in an active shooter situation – the school has lockdown drills, security systems and restricted entrances. But a sole gunman on Valentine’s Day was still able to kill 17.
From the school’s survivors, and other students across the US, movements have sprung up in its aftermath rejecting what has been dubbed the “new normal” for their generation. Thousands of teenagers, including many still too young to vote, have become grassroots activists. Social media has become a tool for their ideas and campaigns to spread.
Their calls for gun control are not different to those in the aftermath of other tragedies – but the maturity and voracity of the students publically voicing their demands has led many on social media to say this time feels different.
“In Newtown the students were so young they couldn’t stand up, but trust me – we are going to be the change,” Parkland survivor Alex Wind told the BBC.
As Wednesday’s atrocity took place, he was forced to huddle in darkness with 60 other students for over an hour and a half as shots rang out throughout their school.
Alex and four of his friends founded the Never Again campaign in the immediate aftermath. Now over a dozen of them are tirelessly campaigning and making the rounds on US cable news networks to share their message that the school’s survivors will not back down.

“It is absolutely insane that a 19-year-old cannot purchase alcohol but can walk in and buy an AR-15 – a weapon of war, by all means a weapon of mass destruction,” he said.
“You don’t need this to protect your home or your family, its absolutely absurd you can sell it commercially.”
They have announced the March for Our Lives to take place on 24 March, in conjunction with the Everytown for Gun Safety, calling for the prioritisation of children’s lives in the gun control debate.

Media captionOn Saturday student Emma Gonzalez, an organiser of the march, told lawmakers: “Shame on you!”
Student Cameron Kasky, also 17, said the group’s aim is to “create a new normal where there’s a badge of shame” on politicians accepting donations from gun lobbyists.
“My message for the people in office is: You’re either with us or against us. We are losing our lives while the adults are playing around,” he told CNN.
The group are encouraging other students around the country to join with them and protest – a movement that is already happening online.
Lane Murdock, who is 15 and lives in Connecticut, was one of the students who saw events in Florida and felt mobilised to try and make a difference.
“When I saw the news the most saddening thing was that it felt normal,” she told the BBC.

“I’m from Connecticut where Sandy Hook happened – I’ve been surrounded by this reality all of my life.”
She, like other US students, has grown up learning lockdown drills since she was in elementary school. She remembers her first at seven years old.
“We all hide in the safest corner, huddle together with our knees up against our chest while our teacher turns off the lights, closes the blinds and locks the door.”
She had the idea to launch an online petition for a national student walk out on the anniversary of the Columbine attack. After a “whirlwind” few days, Lane’s campaign has garnered tens of thousands of followers and signatures.
The teenager, who says she has ambitions of being a journalist, is now liaising with national advocacy groups to make sure any strike action is cohesive and effective.
Her mother, Bari, says that she is “beyond proud” of her daughter.
“If anything is going to change, it is up to our youth. We’re failing our children – I hope it takes off,” she said.
Another student hundreds of miles away from Wednesday’s attack, Violet Massie-Vereker, had her own simple and provocative idea to draw attention to the reform debate.
Following on from the success of the #MeToo campaign, she proposed a twist exposing the reality for student and parents’ concerns with #MeNext?
Image copyright Deborah Lowery
She stood with a sign outside her high school in Pelham in New York alongside several other students and local parents.
“A number of people have told me it’s frightening and powerful, and really sends a message,” the 16-year-old told the BBC.
She said at her high school, the shooting was followed by a special assembly, where the principal gave an address to students where they went over their lockdown procedures.
“He told us, I wish I could assure you that nothing could happen here, but I can’t,” she said.
Others have joined in their social media campaign, posting pictures themselves or of their children online with their own signs. Their Facebook page now has over 10,000 likes of its own.
“It’s a drop in the bucket within the debate, but I sincerely believe this is the beginning of the end. Students should harness their fears to help promote a change.”
In West Michigan, teenagers from Kalamazoo Central High School started their own petition titled “Students Fighting Guns Since Adults Won’t”. It has almost 50,000 signatures.
Julia Kemple-Johnson, 17, said the idea came from a discussion between friends a day after the Parkland shooting. She said they felt like they were having a discussion about gun violence every other week.
Image copyright Kimberley Wheeler
Image caption Mackenzie Jones, 15 from Chesterfield, Virginia joined in the online #MeNext? campaign
“I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know about mass shootings,” she told the BBC.
“Our teacher told us that Columbine was a wake-up call at the time, but we were born after that and we are just so used to it, so desensitised.”
They are trying to work with groups from Colorado and connect with survivors in Florida. Their aim is to contact their local state representatives asking for the introduction of mandatory waiting periods for background checks, and a review of semi-automatic weapons.
In Maine, students from Mount Desert Island High School held their own silent protest to the attack.
The networks are growing hourly, and the groups’ teenage organisers are trying to intersect to create cohesive action.
Tweets by survivors from Wednesday’s Florida attack are now being met with hundreds of shares and messages of support from their national peers.
Whether meaningful change is enacted from the emotional response remains to be seen, but thousands of students without the power to vote are doing their very best to make their voices heard.

"Little Shop of Horrors" show #679
As much as they warn us, we still keep feeding the plants! Such is the basis of intrigue and pure entertainment quality to be found in Howard Ashman and Alan Menken’s musical, Little Shop of Horrors. The catchy tunes, the comedic sci-fi plot, and heartwarming love story have earned this show its rightful place in the canon of beloved musicals. StageWorks Fresno just closed an engrossing, wonderfully energetic production featuring a cast of impeccable actor-singers working under the clipped, properly varied staging of director Joel Abels. With this production being my seventh visit to Skid Row, I can safely say that it was in StageWorks Fresno’s production that I enjoyed several songs and jokes/bits in ways I had never experienced before, making this a carefully nuanced and specifically fun show to see.
Terry Lewis dominated as the central plant enthusiast, Seymour. His nerdy demeanor didn’t get in the way of the earnestness he exuded in “Skid Row (Downtown),” “Ya Never Know,” and “Now (It’s Just the Gas).” Mr. Lewis’ gravitas juxtaposed the whimsical personality of Seymour extremely well in a more-than-satisfying vocal turn alongside William Bishop’s Audrey II (voice) in a commanding “Feed Me (Get It).” It is here that Mr. Lewis finally got to break out from beneath the glasses and sweater, and truly find the moxie needed to win over Audrey. Mr. Bishop’s booming bari-tenor chops were suited well in the score as he delivered “Suppertime” and the reprise marvelously. Abigail Nolte carried the female leading journey with beautiful poise and a knack for being an adorable ditz without being dumb. Her sunny disposition made her relationship with the abusive Orin Scrivello, DDS all the more heartbreaking, leading to all the more rooting for her and Seymour to work out. Miss Nolte’s turn at “Somewhere That’s Green” was absolutely gorgeous, a lesson in how to deliver equal parts comedy and tender inner-turmoil in soliloquy form. These First Act triumphs for Mr. Lewis and Miss Nolte set up the Act Two show-stopping duet, “Suddenly Seymour” for success, and succeed it did.
Kindle Cowger, Caitlin Lopez, and Mackenzie Stafford rocked the house as the trio of Urchins: Crystal, Ronette, and Chiffon, respectively. The three powered through a very well-sung and danced “Prologue (Little Shop of Horrors)” and each delivered solo turns that lit up the stage; Miss Cowger in her belting leadership to kick off “Skid Row;” Miss Lopez in “Ya Never Know;” and Miss Stafford exuding fine-tuned comedy as well as a solid vocal turn in “The Meek Shall Inherit.” Mark Standriff delivered a fantastic performance as flower shop owner, Mr. Mushnik. The Yiddish dialect and constant barraging of Mr. Lewis’ Seymour added lovely doses of flavor and layers to the honorary patriarch of the leading characters. Ted Nunes was a fun Orin, creating a different approach to the S&M-loving dentist in “Dentist!” and then nailing the comedy in his untimely death in “Now (It’s Just the Gas).” Logan Cooley, as the Audrey II body, was in perfect sync with Mr. Bishop’s voice, being the best connected Audrey II I have ever seen. The term “suspension of disbelief” is particularly necessary for any production of Little Shop of Horrors, an inherited aspect for any director and designer to work with with this title. Mr. Abels, Mr. Cooley, and Mr. Bishop handled this aspect of talking plants perfectly, adding to the entertainment value even more.
Josh Montgomery’s period-appropriate, bouncy choreography of “Prologue (Little Shop of Horrors),” “Da-Doo,” “Ya Never Know,” and “Mushnik and Son” were show highlights that were executed with precision and commitment by the efficiently small cast. Dan Aldape’s lighting design was a technical highlight, as it captured the bits, moods, and intimacy of Mr. Abels’ staging extremely well and consistently throughout the musical. Lisa Schumarker’s costumes added the dose of 1970’s flash and attitude one wants in …Horrors, and Mr. Abels and Aaron Lowe’s scenic design was an inclusive, grandly dumpy Skid Row block that was perfect for setting up the dumpy downtown aesthetic. Keep on StageWorks Fresno’s tabs for their next season, their first ever with all musicals. Go see a show!
