How do you honor the performers of an ephemeral art form?

Leading up to the dance concerts, both the Choreographer's Showcase and the Spring Dance Concert with BDC, I buzzed with an unrecognizable edge— this was a frenetic ache for all the dancers who couldn’t dance. together. on stage.

In early April, I had witnessed one of the strangest and most inspiring “performances” I had ever seen. With our dept.’s production of Cabaret, not only did the show go on, but from disparate geographies, Kander & Ebb was transmitted in small squares on a glowing screen. I leaned in. I welled up— our fabulous students portrayed earnest connection through movement and song and characters. In reality they were in their bedrooms looking deep into the eye of a green dot. A bathrobe became a glamorous fur coat. A closet served as a backstage exit/ entrance. A pineapple danced. It all mattered more than I can say.

As the concerts approached, I needed to see the dancers— the patterns and formations they made together--- the entanglement of limbs, the synchronization of physical complexity, the exhilarating arch of the spine amplified on many bodies in unison. But it wasn’t about my needs. It was about these dancers that had been waiting all semester for a residency that didn’t happen. It was about the dancers that had been in rehearsal each week interpreting the choreographer’s ideas. It was about the seniors who had one final chance to absorb the elation of performance, in what Merce Cunningham called, “that single fleeting moment when you feel alive.” How could I even begin to honor that? It felt vital for our community to be with each other and for the dancers to be witnessed dancing.

All I could do was make videos. It was a chance to replay and obsess over each moment. A way to match the graphs of sound to the architecture of the choreography. It was a way to see the dancers collected in the studio and moving together.  I hung out with them each night— editing and splicing.   I could bring memories to the present as I formatted on a virtual stage that was really the monitor I had retrieved from the office.  When the concert dates arrived, we had an occasion to gather together. Over zoom, the dancers showed up and we watched diluted video versions of what would have been —no longer performers, the dancers were now audience to the concert’s shadow which had been constructed from archived rehearsals.

It didn’t matter.

We were together, sharing the disappointment and the beauty and the resilience.  There was something profoundly meaningful in witnessing the process and recognizing all the potential of the product.

Four Canadian startups won top honors yesterday at the FinTech Startup Pitch Contest, which took place during the 2018 Canada FinTech Forum, the country’s largest FinTech event. I had the pleasure of witnessing the pitches in Montreal.

The ten finalists, chosen among 118 start-ups from Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa, had the opportunity to showcase their innovative solutions to a panel of judges.

Symend also received a $150,000 investment offer from Luge Capital. Luge Capital and BDC Capital, through its Women in Technology Fund, extended an offer of $150,000 each (for a total of $300,000) to Lendified, and Edelman Montréal added $15,000 worth of communication services to the prize.
