On February 6th 1685 Charles II the “merry monarch” died.
The following is an account of King Charles II death by his physician Charles Scarborough, it seems quite horrific, and given a choice I think I would prefer to have died the same way as his old man, with one swift chop of the axe!
When Charles II lay dying from a convulsion which attacked him while shaving, the medicos of that day left no stone unturned in helping him along to the Great Beyond. First, he was bled of a pint of blood. Then his shoulder was cut and eight ounces more of blood was extracted by cupping.
Then followed an emetic, a purgative and another purgative. Next, an enema in which they used antimony, sacred bitters, rock salt, mallow leaves, violet, beet root, camomile flowers, fennel seed, linseed, cinnamon, cardamom seed, saffron, cochineal and aloes. This enema was repeated. In two hours, another purgative was given.
The King’s scalp was then shaved, and a blister raised on it. They gave him next sneezing powder of hellebore root; they sought to strengthen his brain by giving him powder of cowslip flowers. Purgatives were frequently repeated. He was given drinks of barley water, licorice, sweet almonds, white wine, absinthe, anise seed, extracts of thistles, rue, mint and angelica. When these did not cure him, they gave him a poultice of burgundy pitch and pigeon dung, to be applied to his feet. More bleeding, more purging; they added melon seeds, manna, slippery elm, black cherry water, extracts of flower of lime, lily of the valley, peony, lavender and dissolved pearls. When these did not do the trick, they went at it with gentian root, nutmeg, quinine and cloves. When this failed, he was given forty drops of extract of human skull. Then they forced down his throat a rallying dose of herbs and animal extracts. Then some powdered bezoar stone.
Alas, after an ill fated night His Serene Majesty was so exhausted that all the physicians became despondent. And so, more active cordials, and finally pearl julep [a heart tonic] and ammonia, were forced down the royal patient’s throat. Then he died.
Charles II died aged fifty-five, he suffered an apoplectic fit while shaving. He died four days later but may well have survived without the medical intervention of the day. No shir!

If anyone is curious about the cake, I looked up this recipe:
1 cup white sugar
½ cup unsalted butter
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 ¾ teaspoons baking powder
½ cup milk
And bastardized it in the following ways:
Leave the recipe up on your screen but too far away to read it clearly,
Open and drain a can of beets. Yes beets, the red earthy root vegetable,
Use an immersion blender to puree the beets some,
Eyeball roughly a half cup of canola or sunflower oil instead of butter [to save butter, or just use butter see if I care],
put in a much *closer* to tumblr worthy level of vanilla extract,
Pour in about a quarter cup of heavy cream, it's fine there's extra fluids in the beets and you probably over-shot the oil,
Add in 2 extra large eggs because I never use anything but extra large eggs,
Add a pinch of salt it never called for,
Add in what's left in a bag of white sugar and then over-shoot making up the rest with brown sugar slightly, by eye, it's fine,
immersion blend again until you are sure there's no chunks,
Add in what's probably a 3rd cup of cocoa or more and blend more,
eyeball a cup and a half or so of flour by scooping generously a few times with a quarter cup measure and letting it heap,
Dump in what's -probably- more baking powder than that recipe calls for,
immersion blend again until it looks like batter, even if it's on the *slightly* runny side. If it seems way too runny add a bit more flour,
***If you want to be extra -me- about it, you can also add in a tablespoon of cinnamon and an tablespoon of cayenne pepper at this point, but I get the sense most people won't want to***
Oil and flour a baking pan and pour it all in, mine is this big oval-ish one. I baked it at 350 without preheating until it smelled done.
tada!
Now we mix SALTED butter with solid coconut oil half and half, dump in some coco and an appropriate seeming amount of icing sugar with a squirt of vanilla extract and blend aggressively until it's fluffy
Do not apply it until the cake is cooled.
Unless you are particularly sensitive to the earthy taste of root vegetables and dislike them, you probably won't notice the beets, but you know how carrot cake maintains this moist tenderness because of the inclusion of fibery vegetable matter? Yeah. This chocolate cake will have something very moist and carrot cake-like about the texture, letting it be heavy without being dense in a way that comes off as very rich, even though it still has plenty of air in it. No soaking in anything fancy required.
If you use cocoa that hasn't been treated with alkaloids it'll probably come out convincingly red too. This might actually be a red velvet recipe tbh but my coco is the dark stuff.
The coconut butter in the icing pairs well with the earthy hint from the beets and makes the icing firm at cooler temperatures but melt quickly in your mouth, it's very yummy. I didn't even bother making Italian meringue to make a butter cream and it's still impressively good. Coconut butter in icing is honestly always good unless you hate coconut.
Whatever, yay cake!
I know people will say baking is an exact science but getting the portions mostly correct is fine so long as the batter has the right consistency the beets make it more forgiving or something.
Have fun and be yourself <3

Just Keep Baking #56 Beet Chocolate Cake Pops
Sul Sul, Gerbits. Today’s recipe is nothing but pure and utter determination. Determination to save a fail.

This is a recipe I have grown up with. A recipe that I am in love with. A recipe that has impacted my whole family. Whenever anyone sees beets, they look at me and think “oh… cake?”

Today’s recipe was going to be a layered cake, but as I was taking it out of the freezer. It split… Right down the middle. So I panicked a little bit. And then changed my thought patterned. And so today we are going to be making cake pops.

The first thing you are going to do is preheat your oven to 350 F.

The recipe will be in the description down below. Feel free to check it out.

Grease a loaf tin with flour and set it aside.

In a bowl you are going to mix together your dry ingredients. Which includes your: baking powder, cocoa powder, sugar and salt. And set that aside.

Now its time to get messy. We are going to puree the beetroot. And mix with the oil and vanilla extract in a large bowl. Admire the color that you have just created.

Next you are going to add the eggs one by one and mix well after each addition.

Slowly add the dry ingredients and mix until combined.

Make sure you do not over mix.

Fill into the loaf pan and smooth out the surface.

Bake in the middle of the oven for 70-75 minutes (check after 60 minutes and cover with aluminum foil in case the cake get too dark.)

That is if you are baking in a loaf pan. If you are using a normal cake pan then you are going to bake it for 20-30 minutes.
I made a cream cheese frosting to go with this cake. Now we are going to form our cake pops. Crumble up your cake and form balls or other shapes. And use your cream cheese frosting. It will get messy.

This recipe was not something that I intended to do. But it still tasted really good. I hope that you like this. Vadish, Dag Dag.

Kinpira of beetroot (prose, cooking)

dish

beetroot
Beets are a type of Amaranthaceae vegetable related to spinach. They are almost the same as sugar beets, which are used to extract sugar. Their photosynthetic efficiency is the highest of all plants, beating out potatoes.
The red roots contain potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, folic acid, and vitamin C, and are also rich in polyphenols.
I boiled the root to soften it this time, then cut it into pieces. When boiled, they turned a color similar to tuna fatty tuna. This reduced the unique earthy smell and added a corn-like flavor, making them easier to eat.
The roots were cut into thin strips and fried with sliced wood ear mushrooms in sesame oil, seasoned with sugar, soy sauce, and pepper. Crushed walnuts were added and removed from the heat.
The red color looks delicious. Beets that are soft enough are also easy to eat.
Note: Kinpira: stir-fried shredded vegetables

Top Supplements to Detox Your Liver Naturally
Your liver is one of the most important organs in your body. It performs over 500 essential functions, including filtering toxins from the blood, metabolizing nutrients, supporting digestion, and regulating hormones. However, in today's world—filled with processed foods, pollution, alcohol, and medications—your liver can become overworked and sluggish.
While the liver is naturally self-cleansing, certain supplements can enhance its detoxification processes and promote optimal health. In this article, we’ll explore the best liver detox supplements backed by both tradition and modern science, and how they can help you feel cleaner, lighter, and more energized.
🧪 1. Milk Thistle (Silymarin)
Milk thistle is one of the most researched and widely used herbal supplements to detox liver. The active compound, silymarin, has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Benefits:
Protects liver cells from damage
Supports regeneration of liver tissue
Helps with fatty liver, hepatitis, and alcohol-related liver conditions
How to Take: Usually available in capsule or extract form. A typical dose ranges from 200–400 mg of silymarin per day.
💊 2. N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)
NAC is a precursor to glutathione, the body's most powerful antioxidant, which plays a central role in liver detoxification.
Benefits:
Boosts glutathione levels in the liver
Helps detox heavy metals and harmful substances
Used in hospitals for acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose
How to Take: Common doses range from 600–1,200 mg per day, taken on an empty stomach.
🌱 3. Dandelion Root
This traditional herb is more than a weed—it’s a natural liver tonic. Dandelion root stimulates bile production, which helps the liver process fats and remove waste.
Benefits:
Promotes liver detoxification
Supports digestion
Reduces water retention and bloating
How to Take: Available as tea, capsules, or tincture. Can be taken daily for gentle liver support.
🍠 4. Beetroot Extract
Beets contain betaines, which help reduce fat buildup in the liver and support detox pathways.
Benefits:
Enhances liver enzyme activity
Reduces inflammation
Supports circulation and blood purification
How to Take: Found in powder, juice, or capsule form. Add beet powder to smoothies or juices for an extra detox boost.
✨ 5. Glutathione
Glutathione is naturally produced in the liver, but stress, alcohol, and poor diet can reduce levels. Supplementing directly helps restore your detox capacity.
Benefits:
Neutralizes free radicals and heavy metals
Improves liver enzyme function
Supports immune health
How to Take: Liposomal or IV glutathione is most effective; oral forms may have low bioavailability.
🌿 6. Artichoke Leaf Extract
Artichoke leaf is another time-tested liver herb. It’s rich in compounds that promote bile flow and digestion.
Benefits:
Aids in fat metabolism
Protects liver tissue
Reduces symptoms of indigestion
How to Take: Often combined with milk thistle in liver support formulas. Look for a standardized extract for consistent dosing.
🧬 7. Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)
ALA is a unique antioxidant that works in both water and fat environments, making it highly effective in supporting the liver.
Benefits:
Regenerates other antioxidants like vitamin C and glutathione
Helps reduce liver inflammation
Supports metabolic health and blood sugar balance
How to Take: Doses typically range from 300–600 mg per day. Best taken with food.
🧂 8. Zinc and Selenium
These essential trace minerals support antioxidant activity and enzyme function in the liver.
Benefits:
Assist in glutathione production
Protect against oxidative stress
Aid detox enzyme function
How to Take: Found in multivitamins or standalone supplements. Be cautious with dosing—too much can be harmful.
🧘 Lifestyle Tips to Maximize Detox Benefits
Liver supplements are most effective when paired with healthy habits:
Hydrate Well: Water helps flush out toxins and keeps liver pathways flowing smoothly.
Eat Whole Foods: Leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale), and citrus fruits naturally support detox.
Limit Alcohol and Sugar: These stress the liver and can slow down detoxification.
Exercise Regularly: Physical activity helps stimulate circulation and lymphatic flow.
⚠️ Important Note
While supplements can enhance liver function, they are not a cure for liver disease. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting a liver detox supplement, especially if you are on medications or have existing health conditions.
✅ Final Thoughts
Your liver is vital to nearly every aspect of your health—from digestion to energy to hormone balance. Taking proactive steps to support it with natural supplements like milk thistle, NAC, glutathione, and beetroot can help maintain long-term wellness and vitality.
Instead of waiting for signs of fatigue, bloating, or poor digestion, start nourishing your liver today with the right combination of nutrition, lifestyle, and targeted supplementation.

Breakfast with Cordelia #3 Chocolate Beet Cake

Sul Sul Gerbits! The first time I had this recipe I was shocked. I could not believe the food that my mom put in front of us. She brought this cake to the table. Didn’t say what was inside it, she just gave it to us. And we did what we normally did with the sweets mom made, we gobbled it up. Wanting more.

Christian and Christopher were teens, while Constance, Celeste and I were children. I remember she looked at dad and gave him the biggest grin. Dad looked at her after we had finished and said “Hun, you should probably tell them what was in that.”

This comment was kinda worrying, we all just kept guessing what it was. About 15 Minutes after the guessing mom said “Beets. Beets were the secret ingredient in this cake.”

Here I was, a child, very confused. Because the only time I have ever had beets, they were the hard part of a salad or something like that. I had no idea that beets could be so good. Or so addicting.

Today I am going to share with you my mom’s Chocolate Surprise Cake.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease and dust a large loaf tin or muffin tins. If you are making them in a muffin tin you are going to have to reduce the time, so that the cake does not burn.

In a bowl mix the flour with the baking powder, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Set that aside until you need it.

Next, you are going to puree the beetroot. Be careful of this step or else your hands will become very red. You are going to mix the oil and vanilla extract in a large bowl with the purebred beets. Add the eggs one at a time and mix well after each addition.

Add the flour mixture and mix until combined. Make sure not to over mix. This is where you are going to fold in your chocolate chips.

If you are using a loaf pan, fill it and smooth out the surface. Do the same thing for the individual muffins, as well.

For the loaf pan, you are going to place it in the middle of the oven for 70-75 minutes (check it after 60 minutes and cover with aluminum foil in case the cake gets too dark.

At this point, the cake should still be a bit moist in the middle. Take out of the oven and cool down in the pan for 30 minutes.

For the muffin tins, you are going to fill your muffin tins halfway. Place trays on the top and bottom racks of your oven. Switch their position after five minutes of baking. The muffin tin that started on the top rack is going to be on the bottom rack when you are done. They take about 10-15 minutes.

I still can’t believe that we got bamboozled by our mom. I mean we ate beets for what seemed like the first time. It was very strange. All I can remember thinking was that this cake just tasted like an earthy brownie. It is one of my favorites. And wouldn’t you know toddlers like eating them too? Both Dylan and Daxon gobbled them up. I hope you all like this recipe. And if you want to see more recipes like this one in the future make sure to like and subscribe. Vadish, Dag Dag.
