What are the Tools of Paint by Numbers Kits?
Paint by numbers kits have transitioned to being more than just a pastime; it`s a creative diversion that can help artists of all skill levels be creative while requiring no formal artistic experience. Beginners or experienced artists doing it as a mindful activity can obtain everything they need to create beautiful pieces worthy of framing through a paint by number kit. But what exactly is included in Paint by Number Kits? What components are in the kits, and how do the components work together to create a complete art piece on your canvas?
In this blog we will break down the basic components you will come across in Paint by Numbers Kits, discuss the purpose of each component and provide tips on how to use them. By identifying the purpose of each item we can enhance your painting experience while working on a traditional paint-by-number design and to enhance your experience if you do a custom paint by number canvas.
1. Pre-Printed Canvas
The canvas is the central part of any paint by number kit. Typically made from a high-quality linen or some type of cotton-polyester blend, the canvas is printed with a detailed outline of the image you will create. Each space within the outline contains a small number that tells you exactly which colour should be used to fill that section.
Some canvases are pre-stretched and attached to a wooden frame, but they can also arrive rolled or folded, and can be framed in the future. Many kits include wrinkle-proof, textured canvases that dry with a smooth, premium aesthetic.
In the future, I would suggest that beginnerpaint-by-numberss artists should:
- Flatten the canvas before you start.
- Use masking tape to secure your canvas to your work area.
- Work from the top to the bottom of the artwork-and dry the wet paint to avoid smears.
- The canvas is the greatest part of the paint by number process, as you thin-out and paint-in the numbered areas, whether it is a nature scene, cityscape, or even a portrait of a family member, the artwork slowly comes into existence.
2. Numbered Acrylic Paints
Each kit of this type comes with tiny acrylic paint pots, labelled with a number just like the sections of the canvas. Acrylic is a good option because it dries quickly, has vibrant colours, and sticks well to fabric.
The kits come with different amounts of paints, as the easier designs will have, perhaps, 10-15 colours, and more difficult designs can have over 30 colours of paint. These paints are usually already mixed, and you typically won't be required to mix or dilute the paints unless you feel so inclined to experiment. Here are some tips for working with the paints:
Make sure you put the lids back on the paint pots when you are done using them so they won't dry out.
If any paint gets too thick, you might consider just putting a droplet of water in the paint pot and remixing it.
If you want to mix some of the paints together or thin some of the paints down, you will probably want to get a palette or plastic tray to do that.
The great part about custom paint-by-number kits is that the colors could be more varied than pre-mixed, or they could actually be colors that are used to indicate specific colors for you to replicate your photo, so it is even more important to handle paints with care.
3. Paintbrushes
Most paint-by-number kits provide a simple set of brushes, usually consisting of three different sizes:
Small-tip brush to cover tiny, detailed sections.
Medium brush for moderate sections and a blending effect.
A large brush for filling in a background or a large space.
Most brushes are synthetic and compatible with acrylic paints. As a beginner, the brushes typically supplied will be sufficient to execute the work, but many enthusiasts choose to use more professional brushes as they develop their style for more accuracy, comfort and creativity.
Brush care is critical.
Rinse out thoroughly after every use to stop hardening.
Dry flat on a towel to preserve shape.
Store upright, or in a storage holder to add longevity.
Understanding how to control your brush will help to keep you within the lines and lessen the chances of bleeding paint into another section.
4. Reference Sheet
Most kits come with a reference sheet that is a smaller version of the canvas and has all of the numbers indicated. This is great, especially if some of the numbers on the actual canvas are not clear or if you completely cover some of the letters with paint by the time you paint them.
You can also use the reference sheet as a backup reference if you accidentally paint the wrong colour or forget a number.
Though slighted, the reference sheet is a handy tool that helps with both accuracy and additional confidence.
You can use the reference sheet to:
Test your paint colours before applying them to the canvas.
Practice brush techniques or blending before putting it on the canvas.
Plan your painting strategy, such as whether you will do one colour at a time or one section at a time.
5. Hanging and Finishing Tools
Some Paint by Numbers kits even go beyond paint, providing supplies for hanging or displaying your finished painting. These supplies could include:
- Hooks or adhesive strips
- Wooden stretcher bars to frame the canvas
- Packets of varnish or sealant to protect the painting
While these add-ons are not the norm in all kits, they can be a great value, particularly if you intend to display your work.
Should your kit not include them, think about buying:
- DIY picture frame kits that are often very inexpensive online.
- Gloss or matte sealants that you can apply once the painting is dry; they provide protection and a more polished finish.
These supplies help ensure your work doesn’t end after you paint, but becomes a permanent installation in your home.
6. Additional Helpful Tools (Optional)
While not included in your basic hobby kit, these optional tools can help you have a much more enjoyable experience while painting:
Magnifying Glass or Lamp: Helpful if painting something intricate or if you have aging eyesight.
Apron or Drop Clothing: Helps keep your clothes and work surfaces paint spillage free, especially if the paint is not water or solvent soluble.
Paint pot organisers: Keep paint pots upright and limit mess.
Brush holder or Stand: Ensures that brushes dry properly and are easy to grab when needed.
Again, none of these tools are necessary, but they can help you enjoy the hobby and make it more efficient as you begin working on more complicated or advanced hobbies or projects.
7. Tools in Custom Kits
When dealing with customized paint by numbers kits, products are typically at parity, but are much more wisely curated due to the nature of creation. The goal is to re-create a certain image, and since it usually comes from a personal photograph, the details are that much more important.
In such kits, you may get:
- morecolourr po,s; even shades.
- Finer brushes; portrait-level precision.
- higher quality canvas; worthy of preserving fate.
These improvements are meaningful with the ultimate goal of producing something that can be both a replica and more, so that a memory can be transformed into a piece of handmade art.
Conclusion
Paint by number is more than a hobby — it is a full toolkit for engagement with creativity in one convenient bundle. Each of the numbered canvases, the acrylic paints, the brushes all function in concert to help you transform a blank surface into a meaningful, beautiful and satisfying piece.
No matter if you are unlocking your creative side for the first time, or developing your existing skillset through a custom paint by number, taking care of your tools will ultimately make a difference in your results. The tools are even designed to facilitate anyone to create confidently, no matter their background or budget.
So, the next time you open a kit, take a moment to consider the quality design of each item. Once you have the toolkit of tools firmly in your hand, and take your time with the painting process, you are not just painting — you are creating art, telling a story, and experiencing an artistic journey with every colour.

Okay, now I'm hooked! From painting landscape to drawing the object of my obsession, Levi Ackerman.
Here, he's angry but worried as he saw you flying toward a small titan without his permission. You managed to slice the titan's nape clean. He's relieved that you're okay, but still pissed at your stubborness. Now he's thinking of a proper punishment. Yet, for you, all his punishment are always an explosion of pleasure.
Sure, he may not be as pretty as he looks in the anime 😂 I don't know why he looked a bit more like Jean 🤣 Anyway, going to enjoy the learning process to hopefully one day I could draw the Levi that I'd swoon over 🥰

Starlight. Ah, another #gouachepractice painting I got to finish. I don't know how I feel about this one. I know it could use a bit more touch ups but I kind of don't want to overwork it at the same time. I obviously still need more practice with gouache but I am definitely loving how quicker it is to work with compared to watercolors (I am an impatient potato) Oh yeah, helpful tip. Invest in your rest. Like seriously. If you have an art block and all your usual art block destroyers aren't working, it's high time you take a five (or longer). I am pretty sure you guys have heard this from other artists already, but forcing yourself during a burnout won't help Oh yeah, and I will make this a note to self as well. Anyways how is everyone's Monday? My very first attempt at oil painting, ever! Again, I’m drawn to mono-chromaticism (this just being burnt umber and titanium white) but I can tell that with more practice (and let’s be honest; a more complete set of paints) I’ll definitely fall in love with oils and their color possibilities. Any tips or advice are always welcome! #beginnerartist #beginnerpainter #oilpainting #painting #portraitpainting #nose #monochrome (at Denver, Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwKmj4an7b5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=kyyijj162ka3
