Bella could see colors. Sort of. She had been amazed by the occasional radiance of a tree's leaves. The shocking moment of sunset that had literally driven her to tears. Her mom had always said she didn't need a soulmate because she already had so much more than other people. Charlie always smiled and said he'd tell her when she was older.

Jacob swore every time he saw Bella, when the two of them were younger, there would be splashes of color like along the edges of everything, but he never told anyone except his grandfather. He worried his grandfather would brush it off much like he was sure his parents would. His grandfather surprised him by telling him it was him seeing his soulmate. While Jacob was twelve, he wasn't sure what that meant exactly.

As Jacob got older, he started learning what soulmates meant. He thought he found his soulmate a couple of times, but no colors ever showed up when they locked eyes.
