Touted as a “photographic child prodigy”, Indira Cesarine’s first solo exhibition was at the age of 16 at the Paul Mellon Arts Center. By the time she graduated high school she had exhibited 4 one-woman shows of her photographic work. While finishing a triple major in Art History, French Literature and Women’s Studies at Columbia University, she began shooting for a variety of top modeling agencies including Elite, Ford and Wilhelmina Models. Once she finished her degree, she went to London to pursue her interests in photography and journalism. Within 6 months of arriving in London, she was appointed Editor at Large of the British magazine “Don’t Tell It”, and began shooting editorials for many magazines and clients in England, the US and Europe.
Over the years her work has sparked the interest of some of the world’s top creative directors, having been commissioned for British Vogue, GQ, Glamour, Marie Claire, Tatler, The Times, Grazia, Harper’s Bazaar, In Style, L’Officiel as well as many other international publications and advertising campaigns. She is currently represented internationally with agents in New York, London and Milan. Her career as a director began with her first short film, “City of Love” being featured at Cannes Film Festival in 2007. Since then she has directed, produced and edited numerous short films while maintaining an active career as a photographer. In 2009 she produced and launched the multimedia publication XXXX MAGAZINE, showcasing original multimedia productions of fashion and video art films.
In January 2010, her work was exhibited in a solo show in Paris at Visionairs Gallery, presenting large scale photographic images juxtaposed with her video art productions she directed for XXXX Magazine. Other recent exhibits include: The “Voyeur” Exhibit, Art Basel Miami, celebrating XXXX Magazine’s 3rd issue, sponsored by Miami Art Museum Contemporaries, American Friends of the Louvre and Quintessentially, December 2010; Motion Deconstructed Exhibit with Quintessentiallly Art, New York, June 2010; “Soiree Au Louvre” Video Art Installation at the French Embassy, June 2010; Matignon, Paris Fashion Film Video Installation March 2011, New York Fashion Shorts at the Tribeca Grand, September 2009; London Fashion Shorts at Machine–A Gallery in February 2010; View Imaging exhibit, New York, December 2009; and The Distorted Beauty Show, April 2010. A Community Spirit to be Proud Of
The beauty industry is booming! According to a recent study, statistics show that the UK health and beauty industry is predicted to grow by 21.2% over the next five years. Amazingly, sales of beauty products are expected to reach £14.5bn this year – in the UK alone. Beauty is an artform, one that empowers so many. There’re no denying the inner feeling created by applying that volumising mascara or even giving yourself a flawless complexion. It can completely shift your mood.
Even I, who was told from a very young age that I was allergic to make up ( I wasn’t… thanks Mum), have been tempted into trying out new looks and products. It’s fun, but it’s also gives me a much needed boost on days I feel tired from lack of sleep and have a jam-packed work day ahead.
Yes, the beauty industry is booming, and I’m not at all surprised.
Last month it was announced that I’ve become Avon’s Representative Ambassador at their Smarter Beauty event. The highlight of which was meeting more of their Sales Leaders and Representatives, and hearing why being a Rep is so special to them.
And it is.
I met women and men who’ve dedicated decades of their lives to their individual Avon businesses, and seeing them all merrily sitting together was incredibly heartwarming.

For some, becoming a Rep was a lifeline, giving them financial independence to get them out of challenging personal situations. For others, it enabled them to go on the holidays they’d longed to experience, or helped them feel part of a supportive community – both in terms of their fellow Reps, and their loyal customers.
It makes complete sense that the Reps I met carry a sense of pride at being known as ‘The Avon Lady’ (or Avon Man – there are quite a few men in the fold). Not only that, but that younger Reps are joining the team too, especially as 63% of Reps manage their beauty business online. Avon continue to offer a flexible working opportunity which works around an individual’s commitments, are selling brilliant products (I’m currently obsessed with the Epic Lipsticks – Rosy Outlook has become my go to shade), and are working with a brand that does amazing work for different causes. Their Breast Cancer Promise and the work they do for those going through domestic violence has raised over £22million in the UK alone, and worldwide they’ve managed to raise $957million for incredibly important causes that are important to women.
‘The Avon Lady’ has always been a part of my life, with my mum regularly going out to Avon parties with a local Representative when I was younger – yet the brand’s history goes back far further than my youth. In fact, the first Avon Representative was born in the 1800s. She existed long before women were even given the right to vote, which highlights just how innovative Avon have always been, and continue to be.
For me, Avon are leaders in the personal touches, in making sure they create quality products at affordable prices, and that they’re sold to you by someone you can trust to make the right recommendations for your needs. And the incentive to get it right? Having happy customers. Because a happy consumer will continue to come back for the friendly, reliable service.
And for a brand with so much history behind them, they haven’t been left behind or struggling to keep up with today’s modern world. Today Reps can work twofold, both with their face-to-face services and by taking their businesses online. This has, in my opinion, helped Reps grow their businesses even further, while making their position even more flexible.
Some Reps are already seeing the benefits of working in this way, with one woman telling me about her regular Facebook Lives where she talks about her current favourite products and demonstrates how to use them. It was amazing to see not only how much she’s embracing the platform, but also how much she’s been enjoying it too!
And this is where I have come in. I’m now on-hand to encourage even more Reps to use their social media platforms as business tools, while maintaining the face-to-face values that make Avon so special. It’s not about doing away with the old technique and alienating existing customers, or implying that ‘the old way’ is no longer working, but rather encouraging more Reps to see if there is value on taking things online too.
At the Smarter Beauty event, I was on a discussion panel with Avon’s UK General Manager Matthieu Comard, Former Beauty Director at British Vogue, Nicola Moulton, and beauty director turned blogger Annabel Jones. It was really interesting to hear everyone’s take on building a business online, how to manage it and juggle the demands it brings alongside a busy lifestyle.
