Set during the mid-1990s, Rokuro "Rock" Okajima is a 25-year-old Japanese salaryman working for Asahi Industries in Tokyo. One day, he is taken hostage by the crew of the Elco-type PT boat Black Lagoon. The Lagoon Company, a group of pirate mercenaries dedicated to smuggling goods in and around the seas of Southeast Asia is composed of Dutch, the African-American leader and a former U.S. Navypatrol boat crewman; Revy, the Chinese-American main gunfighter of the team; and Benny, a Jewish-American college dropout, who serves as the mechanic, computer specialist, and researcher.

After Asahi Industries' department chief abandons Rock, declaring him dead, he decides to join the crew. Despite living now as a pirate, Rock retains his skills and good-natured attitude, serving the team as their negotiator and "professional" face of the group. The crew's base of operations is located in the fictional town of Roanapur, Thailand, which is home to pirates, thieves and various criminal organizations including the Japanese yakuza, the Chinese triad, the Russian and Italian mafias and the Colombian cartel. The Lagoon Company takes on a variety of missions, which generally involve violent gunfights and wars with all kind of criminals.

Just found some amazing art references that the animators used for Black lagoon!!!

All thanks to a very old Reddit post which does reveal some stuff.

Here are the pictures in order

⬇️ - Lagoon Office

The picture above is the official black lagoon office which is at the docks. This is the same building where they hide Janet. But this is a whole layout of the entire office. This building seems like the main one and the most convenient since it’s right up against the docks.

⬇️ - Docks for the “Black Lagoon”

This picture is the same dock that gets destroyed in the arc with Janet. I’m pretty sure it also appears in the very first arc too where Rock gets kidnapped by Revy.

⬇️ Lagoon Negotiation

This is where the Lagoon Company meet Chang in season 1. This seems like a backup office or “spare” that’s located within the city. The outside if I remember correctly appears when Dutch is on his walk.

⬇️ Interior

The interior appeared the most in the early episodes of the first season. I think when Dutch comes in with the scuba diving gear. Or Revy dragging Rock from his nap. Another one is when Balalaika calls Dutch about Luak. It also appears in season two when Rock is on the phone with Balalaika due to the vampire twins.

I was actually pretty surprised that this wasn’t part of the office, as in the Lagoon Company all had separate bedrooms. But nope! Same thing in appearance, it’s the one where Revy wakes up in the first season, one time by Rock then on her own.

the scene with benny trying to harden rock to the realities of their world when he vents about how gretel was never given a chance in life shows a lot about him.

it shows that under his mellow and upbeat personality also lies a more realistic view on the world. he is someone who is very much used to the hard realities of his job, and has seen many situations of people getting fucked over and never having a chance. it likely saddens him deep down, but is mostly desensitized to it and is trying to show rock the realities as a way for him to realize when things are going down and to prevent his emotional state from further faltering or him taking it upon himself more than needed, especially as in the beginning he had a strong sense of justice— especially to a fault in certain situations

Rock knows memes but Revy doesn't so whenever Rock makes meme reference she looks at him like he's stupid and tells him to "Stop fuckin' talkin' about shit nobody understands."

She gets even more annoyed when Benny and Eda start making meme references with Rock which causes her to go "I swear to god, if you fuckers don't shut the fuck up, I will shoot each of you in the fuckin' kneecap!"
