Parks and Things (or Stranger Recs)
*Joyce and Jim meet up at a club*
Jim (role playing as a FBI agent): Hello, strange person who I have never met before. Who are you?
Joyce (role playing as Lydia Deetz): I'm Lydia Deetz. I'm a very rich widow with a terrible secret. Who are you?
Jim: Bert Macklin, FBI. I was the best damn agent they had until I was framed for a crime I didn't commit.
Joyce: *gasps*
Jim: Stealing the President's...rubies. Now I work alone.
Joyce: Lovely to meet you.
Jim: I got to admit, I thought your costume would maybe be a little bit sluttier.
Joyce: *slaps Hopper playfully* How dare you? *walks away*
Jim: Nice.
*LATER ON THAT NIGHT*
Joyce: You think I haven't been around the world? I've been everywhere, darling. I'm a very wealthy woman. My husband's kept me in the finest clothes from Bergdorf Goodman, you see-
Jim: Freeze! FBI!
Joyce: No! Leave me alone!
Jim: Hands in the air!
Joyce: I didn't kill anybody! And I didn't burn down the mill either. My youngest son did! But now he's been taken over by the Mind Flayer! *cries wildly as she tosses her shot glass to the ground*

what if it IS peter? how do you think that would fit into everything with will? inquiring minds would like to know lol
Like I said yesterday then Peter like all the numbers, creels, monsters, fake-russia ,lab etc were created by Will : and Peter's backstory would parallel the Byers' ...similar to the creels.
Honestly, if they went with the 001/ Vecna theory-it’d make WAY MORE sense as the Creel’s son , then peter. Since the creel house is “vecna’s lair”. Both him and Will draw with crayons, wear plaid, have a sibling see a dead rabbit. And I have a sneaking suspicion- his name is Gil. Gil is a nickname for William, and Gil is like a fish-gil. Creel-means ‘fish trap’ . And before El first appears in s1 Hopper mentions “El-enor Gilipse”. And in s3 Hopper mentions “Alice Gil-bert”. Alice creel (Victor’s daughter’s name is already confirmed). So i’d much prefer  Gil Creel (over Peter) being Vecna cause it’d make more sense. And further establish the connections to the supernatural with Will.
It would also be similar to my theory: Will the wise , the wizard = Vecna the undead wizard .Vecna would be "William " whether Gil Creel or "Will the wise".
Like I said yesterday on st day- here ( in my episode title post) . It feels like a wasted opportunity for vecna not to be Will the wise.
Vecna was a human , who wanted to live forever. He became a wizard and eventually an undead wizard in order to obtain this immortality. Cough Will- is a zombie boy, Will the wise is a wizard, and is afraid to grow up. And the comic when talking about Will the wise says :" I want him to live forever ". Human vecna's mother was also a witch (Joyce joked she was a witch in s1 to Will). His mother's death was a turning point for future vecna.
Mirkwood (what the boys called the woods in s1) . Is a forrest from "lord of the rings" and is controlled by the "necromancer " (cough -zombie boy . And his zombie story in s3). And in the woods/mirkwood , is castle byers. Will's password for c.b. is 'rhadaghast'- a lord of the rings wizard that controls animals and nature in the woods. Mirkwood is also called ' forrest of darkness " and "the shadow of dol gudur" (shadow monster aka mindflayer.)
It's like how-
VECNA wanted to overrule the shadowplane's: fortress of memories.  Shadow plane, is also called  Plane of Shadow. AKA : Dustin in s1 mentioned the "plane of shadows" (aka the upsidedown) is a dark echo of our world. And Will could "shadow walk" there. And Mr clark says the 'plane of shadow ' (upsidedown) was made by necrotic/shadow magic.
Vecna also lived in the quasi-Elemental Plane of Ash : it was the innerplane at the intersection of the elemental plane of FIRE (Will the wise's fire powers) & and the negative energy plane. It was a place that sucked the warmth from any living creature (like the mindflayer).
Vecna was also the original author of the " book of vile darkness." Will in s2 said the mindflayer (aka shadow monster) was for a story he was writing. And in s3 Will - in the wizard outfit- wrote a zombie story which came true. Yet another connection to vecna- who is associated with darkness and the undead ,along with writing books.
The eye immagery of the vecna also goes with the spying and surveillance within the series - via the lab, the mindflayer, El's powers, the eyeless demogorgan, the eyeless creel, and the bunny whose eyes were gouged out. The rabbit connects to Jonathan's hunting story- in relation to their dad.
Not to mention it'd make sense of the doppleganger immagery
-billy (aka William) dopplegangers in s3,
-the doppleganger ref in the rebel robin novel
-and the doppelganger ref in the recent st game app.
-alot of the s4 st movies had litetal dopplegangers (or 2 diff personalities- or two halves of one person fighting for dominance of 1 body) . Just 1 ex, of many s4 movie films: black swan- the white vs black swan. Aka Will vs Will the wise.
Tumblr media
-it connects to the st comic with the fire weilding twin vs the human twin . The fire twin gets pissed when someone tries injecting her arm with a needle- like possessed Will in s2. The fire wielding twin was mentally trapped in a dark, cold, fantasy world with the demogorgan.
The fire twin is called a "hunter" and the "woods is their domain"- cough Will being forced to hunt by Lonnie. The "mirk-woods" of darkness being controlled by a wizard .
The human twin even has Will's bangs. And the twins were given alot of mirror immagery- similar to black swan .
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
vecna (aka ) - is an ex human, undead- wizard , associated with the plane of shadow, fire , the cold, darkness, memories, and writing books ... who is also afraid of aging . It would make sense Vecna is ' Will the wise'- a Will doppelganger: who heavily influences the upsidedown and its creatures. It would be symbolic of who actually is subconsciously controlling everything aka (normal)Will.
Cue the st comic where Will - as Will the wise- was controlling the monsters all along.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I think maybe they have to get through to Will the wise (aka vecna) to stop it all. For example, vecna is undead and Dustin in s2 mentions how an undead army could stop the mindflayer. For everything to stop - maybe they have to breakthrough to Will the wise (the other 1/2 of Will). In s3 , suzie mentions the "wizard of earthsea" - a boy- wizard with a bowl cut who accidentally releases a shadow. To defeat the shadow he has to learn to accept every part of himself. That includes the shadow...
Tumblr media
- also Will vs Will the wise. A doppleganger twist is most likely coming especially if we look at how many characters in st share the same name. Its intentional...Jennifer hayes (popular girl) & Jen (Mr clarke’s gf). Tina (highschool gal) & Tina- erica’s friend- Tina & christy are also nicknames of christina (s4 character). Susie (dustin’s gf) & susan (max’s mom). Sam (max’s dad) and Samantha (girl at party)/ samuel (possibly argyle). Billy Hargrove, Bill (dianne’s new huband),  and Will-all being nicknames for William. Robin & Bob-nicknames for Robert. Lonnie & Larry-nicknames for Lawerence. Ted  & Eddie being nicknames for Edward.James (Will’s bully), Jim Hopper (real name James), jacobi, and jason- all 4 are derived from jacob . Marsha Holland (barb’s mom) and marsha kelly (therapist s4)/martin relate to mars. Tom (reporter), tommy (highschooler), thompson (other highschooler).
- but I wouldn't be mad if vecna = Gil (William) cause the symbolism still fits. But I do prefer a literal Will the wise. XD

OOC: Hi guys! I apologize for not really posting much. I’ve been going through a lot. Ever since getting sick I haven’t really had much of a desire to come online, and when I have, it’s a spur of the moment reply whether it be over here or over on my multi-muse. Plus, I’m dealing with some friend issues, and on top of that, this is my last week of school until Christmas break. I love and adore Christmas, and oddly enough, I don’t know if it’s just me or whatnot, but it’s been not so hyped and I can probably describe it as possibly having the winter blues. I don’t know. Maybe once I’m off officially things will be a little less hectic. I cannot guarantee, but I did promise myself not to neglect Joyce. However, lately I’ve been having several, several negative thoughts in overall just focusing on my multi-muse like I used to and ditching Mama Byers and a few others to loosen my load. I am known to make brash decisions and not think it through (then regret it), so maybe I’ll think upon it. And as some of my friends know, I’m very hard on myself (I’m looking at you, Becca and Hannah for going all ‘therapist’ on me) and feel as if there are better Joyce’s out there. I have a shit ton of replies to do, and if anyone wants to drop any, let me know, I just don’t want a repeat of what my old Hypodermic Sally blog used to be like where I replied to everything and over a long course of time, my hard work was for nothing. Plus, I realize it’s almost Christmas (or if you’re celebrating Hanukkah or other things-- or even don’t like Christmas) so it’s time to spend with family or friends. So, I don’t expect replies and whatnot. I just wanted to put my thoughts out there, and I hope you guys understand. I feel like I take on a lot, have some fun and it’s short lived, almost like creating Elmo, the Countess and Bert. But like, yeah... I don’t know how else to word it other than I’m going to be slow, and if you’re not okay with that, then that’s your loss because I don’t give a fuck. Happy Holidays! xx

The Dot comes before the Dash- the Danny Ingram interview.
You would see their names on the back of records, many for Washington’s DC’s Dischord label and you might see a photo every now and again, but don’t know much about them unless you were part of that scene (ie; see my previous interview with Chris Bald from a few years ago). Danny Ingram was another one of those names. I knew he’d been in some of the early Dischord bands (Youth Brigade, etc.) and knew he’d done a lot of other stuff but wasn’t exactly sure where, when or in what context (‘cept that I knew he’s a drummer). Fast forward to nearly a decade ago when I saw his name as drummer of a new Washington, DC combo named Dot Dash. Their guitarist/vocalist Terry Banks had been in some of my favorite indie pop combos, namely Tree Fort Angst and The Saturday People, so I knew I was gonna like this one (Hunter Bennett rounds out the trio on bass)! I’ve enjoyed all of their records, but this latest one, Proto Retro (released earlier this year on The Beautiful Music label) is really a special thing of beauty. Well-written rock-pop songs that are both heartfelt and fun (and catchy as hell). Back to Ingram though, he was one of the older punks on the DC scene and thus saw and heard a lot so grab your favorite beverage, your reading glasses and bathrobe and take a stroll both down memory lane and up ‘til the current day.

A man and his drums,
Were you born and raised in Washington, DC?
Yes – DC born and raised. Lived in SE DC until I was 12, then moved to Palisades (NW DC) where I met my life-long friend and future bandmate, Nathan Strejcek.
At what age did you take up the drums?
I had a fascination with drums from an early age. I’d had a crush on my baby sitter, Irene, and her brother had a drum set. To impress her, I tried playing along with his Beatles records and such, even though my feet didn’t reach the pedal. It was a lost cause. But a dear family friend and neighbor in SE, Richard Spencer, nurtured my interest. I think he bought me my first drums. He played in Otis Redding’s band and achieved quite a bit of success with his own band the Winstons (he wrote the Grammy-winning song ‘color him father).  I was about 19 when I took up the drums in earnest – with the intention of being in a band. At the risk of repeating an oft-told story…I had gone to see the Clash at the Ontario theater and was hanging out in the narrow, upstairs ‘dressing room’ with the band and several other people. I was sharing a spliff and talking with Joe, Mick and (to a lesser extent because I had trouble understanding him) Paul. Joe asked if I played in a band – I told him I didn’t – but that my best friend did. He admonished me to get off the sidelines – to ‘do something – create something’ – and when Joe Strummer tells you to do something…well…you do it. Shortly thereafter I volunteered to join the Untouchables (their drummer, Richard, left for college). A few weeks after that we played our first show. This was probably in the fall of 1980.
How did you come into contact with the Dischord Records folks? Were you a Wilson HS student as well? Yeah. I went to Wilson (briefly) and knew all the Dischord people before there was a record label (or a Teen Idles). Nathan and I were best friends and he, along with Ian and Jeff, started the label. We all grew up together and have been friends since early days.
Do you remember the first person you ever met in the DC punk scene? What was your first punk show?
I was there at the outset and knew most-if not all-of the people before there was a scene, per se. I guess the first people I met who weren’t in our group of friends were Xyra and Cathy – they had a punk radio show at WGTB (Georgetown University radio) called Revolt into Style. Nathan and I used to sneak out of our houses and go down for their shows after our parents went to sleep. As for the first concert? Hard to say. I saw so many bands in those early days –one of the first was probably the Ramones in the fall of ’77. I worked at the Atlantis and at the 9:30 club when it first opened up – so I saw almost every show that came through the DC area for many years. Also, I was a smidge older…so coupled with my fake ID I was able to get into places like the Bayou as well.
Tumblr media
Youth Brigade (Danny is 2nd from left)
From what I know you’re a bit older than some of the other DC punks, were you there early enough to go to places like Madam’s Organ and the Hard Art Gallery?  (places I only know about from pictures, usually of the Bad Brains).
Tell me about how/when The Untouchables formed? Was that your first band?
…and please tell us about the origins of Youth Brigade?
I was born in 1961 – so it makes me a about a year older than Ian and Jeff and six months older than Nathan. I never really considered myself older. Now, Boyd and the guys in Black Market Baby were fucking old! Most of em born in the 50’s! J Seriously though – we were all roughly in the same age group – though I think Xyra (who was a bit older) referred to that initial scene (affectionately – not anatomically) as teeny punks or baby punks.  My first band was the Untouchables. As noted above, Richard had split and moved off to college. I was sitting at the Roy Rogers with Eddie, Alec and (I think) Bert as they lamented the loss of their drummer and the prospect of breaking up. I jokingly volunteered to take his place. They immediately said ‘yes’ despite my warnings that I’d never really played the drums. A few weeks later we played our first show. We hung together for almost a year before splitting up. After that was Youth Brigade. Nathan had been the singer of the Teen Idles – but when the band split, it seemed only natural that Nathan and I should start a band together. We’d been best friends for years and had very similar life arcs and musical tastes. We tried out a few guitarists (including Jason of 9353) and one other bassist (Greg) before finally settling on the line-up that most people know with Tom on Guitar and my old friend and former Untouchable mate, Bert on bass.  As for Madam’s Organ or Hard Art? I played at Madam’s Organ – and I was at the infamous Bad Brains show at Hard Art. I can’t remember if I ever played there…but it’s entirely possible. You would have to consult with Bert or Alec or someone whose memory isn’t a shambles.

 Madhouse backstage
Was Madhouse next? They were a bit different right? A darker sound.
I was in a few bands before Madhouse. I played in a band with Dave Byers and Toni Young (from Red C) called Peer Pressure. Tom Berard (scenester) also sang with the band for a while. We recorded a demo up in NY with the bad brains at 171A. We played a handful of shows but, like so many other bands of that era, split up and moved on to other projects.  I also played in a band called Social Suicide – great guys and a fun band (featured Joey A who went on to Holy Rollers). Also short lived – but we did record some songs for a local compilation ‘mixed nuts don’t crack’.  OH – I also briefly tried my hand at singing in a VERY short-lived band called black watch. This featured future members of madhouse (Brad Gladstone on bass and the mega-talented Norman van der Sluys on drums). The less said about this the better. Not because of the band – but because my singing can curdle milk at twenty paces.
I was starting to get a bit antsy with the way the DC scene was evolving – so my then girlfriend (Monica Richards) and I decided to start a band that was more rooted in post punk bands like killing joke, magazine and the monochrome set. That was how madhouse started. But unsurprisingly enough, there was no scene for this band, so we still played mostly punk and hardcore shows – but the direction we tried to take didn’t really sit well with a lot of new, burgeoning scene.  It seems, at least from afar, that you were willing to go in other directions musically (goth, etc.) whereas maybe some of your DC co-horts stuck to the punk rock thing. Would this be accurate? Did you get flack for it?
Yeah – I guess it was a bit gothy. Certainly, that was Monica’s m.o. I’ve always considered myself a punk – no matter what kind of band I played in. But this was definitely the beginning of stretching musical wings. And, yeah, we caught flack for it. But it wasn’t anything I couldn’t handle. Monica caught the most grief – and that is exactly why we both were getting put off by what the scene was turning into. I’ll just leave it at that. That said – my friends, the ones I’d known from the outset, were all cool. Otherwise I wouldn’t have spent some time drumming for Iron Cross with another life-long friend, Sab.

Strange Boutique (not ready to dine and (dot) dash)
Was Strange Boutique next? If so how/when did that band form and what was its history?
Yes – Strange Boutique (a name I copped from the Monochrome Set song/album) was next up. It was still Monica and me – but while Madhouse tried to straddle the punk scene with whatever it was we were trying to do – Strange Boutique basically said ‘fuck it’ and dove headfirst into what was certainly a more goth-punk-pop sound. The Chameleons, Siouxsie, Cure and bands of that ilk were really influencing us a lot and the quality of the band grew exponentially with the addition of Fred Smith and Steve Willett. -- I should pause here to note that I’ve lost a few friends and bandmates along the way – like Toni Young. But two hit particularly hard: Fred Smith – who was a true original. A crazy fucker. Much loved and much missed no matter how much trouble he got me into! And John Stabb – My brother in every sense of the word. Someone I loved until the end and who was a never-ending source of insanity, humor and energy. John and Fred were both unique spirits…and it’s just not the same without them.

radioblue in black and white
Pardon my ignorance (I know it was some years) but was there anything between Strange Boutique and Dot Dash?
There were a few bands after Strange Boutique. I played in radioblue who, like strange boutique, were a band on the outside of the dc hardcore scene. They were more 60s-influenced indie pop (byrds, beatles, beach boys, buzzcocks). It led to drumming in a Mark Helm (a singer/guitarist in the band) project called Super 8 and playing on his solo album (on not lame records). I also started a band called King Mixer AGES ago with Steven Engel and James Lee (the bassist and singer/guitarist from radioblue). We still get together to this day, but it’s more like the monthly poker game: play some music, have dinner, hang out and catch up with old friends. We did put out a self-released CD years ago, but Dot Dash came along, and that has monopolized my time for the last seven years. I also played in Swervedriver for about a year, relocating to London for about ten months. It was an amazing experience. Adam Franklin (the singer / song writer) is the greatest musician I’ve ever played with. And as far as I am concerned Adam is in the pantheon of great song-writers of the last 40 years. Glad to still call him and my old swervie bandmates friends. A lifetime of memories crammed into a short period of time! When I moved back to DC from London at the end of 1992 I played in two more bands. The first was the criminally obscure UltraCherry Violet. They were definitely in the mold of swervedriver and some other favorites from that era. The band was Dugan Broadhurst and Dan Marx (who later played in king mixer). We played a handful of shows before I imploded. We got together a year after we split to record some songs for posterity – and those were ultimately released on Bedazzled records (a label I started while in strange boutique – but by now taken over by Steve Willett). There are a few songs on that CD that are among the things I’m most proud of as a musician.  I also played with my old running mates and brothers-in-arms John Stabb and Steve Hansgen (and Rob Frankel) in a band called Emma Peel. THAT was fun! We really clicked together musically – and we recorded a single on our good friend John Lisa’s label Tragic Life. The Avenging Punk Rock Godfathers! This web of connections is what led Steve to joining Dot Dash further down the road.  The last thing I did before Dot Dash was drumming in the legendary local mod band Modest Proposal, with old friends Neal Augenstein and Bill Crandall (who shortly thereafter was part of the original Dot Dash line-up). Steve Hansgen had played with Neal and Bill during an early incarnation – and he and I comprised the rhythm section for and MP reunion show.

Emma Peel (Danny is far right and that is the late, great John Stabb, 2nd from left)
Do tell us about your current band Dot Dash? I think the records have been terrific. How did you meet Terry and Hunter?
Thanks for the kind words about the DD records. Right now, the band is a three-piece: me on drums, Terry Banks on vocals and guitar and Hunter Bennett on bass. Terry has been in almost as many bands as me – playing in a lot of indie-pop bands like Saturday People, Glo-Worm and Tree Fort Angst. Hunter was a veteran of the Stabb band among others.  I didn’t really know either of them before we started the band…but I knew of them from their previous band Julie Ocean (the band also had Jim Spellman of Velocity Girl on guitar/vocals and Alex Daniels from Swiz on drums). Julie Ocean released a great record on Transit of Venus – and they should have been huge. JO had planned to go on tour with a band called Magnetic Morning (that was my old friend Adam Franklin and Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino’s side-project), but drummer-Alex, bailed on the tour. So, that night at the Rock n Roll Hotel, Terry asked if I wanted to play drums in a new project with him and Hunter. I said yes – after consulting with my wife, Sally – but it actually took another six months or so to get rolling (I had already promised to do the Modest Proposal reunion). As it turned out, Jim was planning on leaving JO as well (taking a job in Colorado) – but when he came back he played briefly in Dot Dash (between Bill and Steve).  Dot Dash has been the most prolific band I’ve ever played with and the longest running active band. We’ve put out six CD’s on the Canadian label, The Beautiful Music. It’s run by an amazing guy – Wally Salem. I’m not sure that we would still be going without his love and support! Truthfully – I also do it for my kids (Noah 12 and Sam 16). I think it’s good to show them that you can do fun and creative things at any age. Sam has really taken it to heart. He’s been playing guitar since he was 10 and is already a better musician than I ever will be! He’s already formed and broken up his first band – and he filled in for Hunter (on bass) at one of our shows…picking up the songs with relative ease and aplomb.
Tumblr media
Almost forgot the Social Suicide pic (Danny’s the UK Subs fan)
What’s next for Dot Dash? Another record in the works? Maybe a tour?  I don’t know about touring. I think we would all love to do it – but because we all have demanding jobs, families and such – it makes it difficult to pick up and run off. That said, if the right opportunity presented itself (like going on a tour with a band we love) I think we would certainly consider it. We’ve been REALLY fortunate to play with some bands that have long been heroes/favorites: the Chameleons, Ash, Hugh Cornwell (of the Stranglers), the Monochrome Set, Stiff Little Fingers, the Dickies, DOA and so on – I think if any of them said ‘let’s do it’ we’d be packing our bags! As for another record? Well – we just released our sixth. And it is definitely the record I’m most proud of. Geoff Sanoff did an amazing job producing it – he also produces the Julie Ocean album – and it’s probably the best batch of songs Terry has written to-date.  We are always cranking out new songs – and already have a few in hand – but I think we want to enjoy the last release, Proto Retro, for a bit.

Dot Dash with Sam on bass.
What’s happening in Washington, DC these days musically? Any new bands we need to hear about? The great thing about DC is that it is like the Hydra of Lerna – every time a band breaks up, two new ones start up again! The scene has been regenerating for ages. And there are a lot of great bands still plugging away – The Messthetics with my old friend and Brendan Canty, Miss Lonelyhearts, Foxhall Stacks (with Jim Spellman), Nathan’s band the Delarcos, any band with Chris Moore (an epic drummer) such as the Rememberables or Coke Bust, Anna Connolly’s new project or the new project with Ian, Joe Lally and Amy Farina. Old or young – the scene here is still vibrant and vital.
Any final thought? Closing comments? Anything you wanted to mention that I didn’t ask?
Obviously, most people know DC for the great music (bad brains, minor threat, fugazi, 9353, government issue, fire party, faith, rites of spring, tommy keene) – but to me, the best thing about it has been the friendships…which for me have been practically life-sustaining. You can’t have a great scene without great people – and to me the people I’ve known along the way simply are the best.
BONUS QUESTION:  What are your top 10 desert island discs (I know some people don’t like when I ask this questions so I decided to put it as a bonus) Wow. Tough one. My top ten has about ten thousand records in it. So, it really is dependent on my mood at the time. I’ll try to throw it together…but if you ask on another day it might be a different batch. Because I’m old – I’m going to take the liberty of picking a baker’s dozen.  Adam and the Ants – Dirk Wears White Sox (original on Do It records) Art Ensemble of Chicago – Les Stances a Sophie J.S. Bach – Air on the G String Buzzcocks – Spiral Scratch ep (rip Pete Shelley) Chameleons – Script of the Bridge (or Strange Times) Miles Davis – ‘Round About Midnight Al Green – Greatest Hits Kinks – Something Else The La’s – The La’s  Punishment of Luxury – Laughing Academy Red Cross – Posh Boy ep Swervedriver – 99th Dream Zombies – Odyssey and Oracle

____________
He let her sleep, disappearing at dawn for a run, then sneaking quietly about the apartment, showering, eating, dressing, leaving again, this time with a note stating he’d be back by noon or before or after, depending on sun angles and Sno-Cone sale prices.
She found said note around 8:45am and promptly returned to bed, amused by how amused she was in her present situation. She’d never woken up in his bed, alone, with his note stating where he was and she’s sure as hell never crawled back into his bed to stretch luxuriously, surrounded by Mulderness and wrinkled sheets. Head nested perfectly in the pillow, she studied his ceiling, then his walls, the windows, curtains, blinds, dresser, mirror, shelves, shoes and map.
She was also naked.
That was possibly the best part.
She was naked and warm and cozy and had absolutely nowhere to go and nothing to do.
And she was in Mulder’s bed.
It was enough to send her rolling to her side, grinning into dented pillow like a college girl who’d just spent her first night in her boyfriend’s apartment. She was too damn old for that feeling but there it was, fluttering her chest, quaking her insides, wondering when he’d return and if he’d jump back in beside her.
Shutting her eyes, she pictured him sliding towards her, naked thighs pressing into hers, chest to back, lips to neck, hand to clit, face buried in the pillow for very different, sound-deadening reasons.
Yeah, she wasn’t waiting for him to get back to take care of a few things.
And she discovered that most of her recent nosebleeds came a few minutes after she did.
&&&&&&&&&
Showered, dressed, bed made, apartment cleaned, lunch debated, trash out, doctor appointment set, she settled down to check her work email, allowing one little slice of reality to intrude into an otherwise self-contained perfection. She was not pleased with the amount in her inbox and setting about deleting crap after crap, she only stopped when she heard the front door open.
Turning in the office chair, which creaked with every degree, she saw his solemn face, any hint of mirth wiped clean, “what happened?”
“Skinner called.”
She dropped him at the airport an hour later, her ticket not until the following evening, after her appointment, “no, you are not canceling, I don’t care how much you fight me, you are not canceling.”
Relenting quickly, not wanting to forgo her appointment any more than he did, “I will fly out tomorrow evening, okay?”
And she kissed him goodbye, apartment to airplane service, “I’ll let you know when I land.”
Tugging on his ear lightly, “you better.”
Once he disappeared into the bowels of the airport, she drove off, oddly empty inside at the unexpected parting and equally unexpected free afternoon and evening. Heavy debate happened between returning to Mulder’s apartment, going to Maggie’s to collect their things, going to work or going to her own apartment, a place she’d barely seen in a good month or so.
Cleaning orgy at her apartment won out, the dust a fine layer, the sense of abandonment acute … the reeking nightmare of rotting hell from the garbage grinder heavy in its revulsion. She’d stopped or had Mulder stop, to get her mail but never needing to get beyond the mailbox in the lobby, neither had smelled, once she’d inspected with flashlight and hesitating fingers, the small chunk of chicken skin wedged to the side of the disposal. Face wrinkled in disgust, she retrieved it, bagged it, washed her hands, emptied the fridge and immediately took out the trash. Next, windows opened, baking soda poured and grinder run, she moved on to the rest of the apartment, half wondering why, every time Mulder went somewhere without her, she cleaned.
It took a few hours to work through things, dinner break included but soon enough, her apartment was spotless, empty and just a tad lonely. She’d been surrounded by children, Mulder, mother and colleagues for weeks now and the stilled silence made her restless for contact, conversation, rescue from her own twisting thoughts.
Maggie for the win as she could hear Mulder saying in her head.
Arriving unannounced at her mother’s, she found several cars in and around the driveway. Making her way in, wondering if she ought to have called first, “Mom?”
Her mother’s voice drifted from the kitchen, “honey, we’re back here.”
She found her way to the kitchen, dropping off shoes and bag on the way, spying Frohike first, then Jake and Charlie, the biggest surprise being Skinner, in t-shirt and jeans, drinking a beer and in deep discussion with Byers. It was enough to stop her in her tracks and honest to God, shake her head in confusion. Delaying her ‘hello’ a moment, she finally returned to the warped cosmology of present day kitchen, “hi. What’s … what’s going on?”
Smiling as her daughter attempted a smooth entrance, “Melvin had some things he promised to show Jake so he and John came by for dinner along with your brother and nephew.” She saw Scully’s eye flit momentarily to Skinner and she continued, “and Walter needed another home cooked meal so I decided to feed them all. I would have called but I didn’t know when Fox was flying out.”
For no real good reason, she blushed, the discussion of her and Mulder floating out there, common and every day at the dinner table with friends and family carrying on their business without even a hiccup in the conversation. Wondering what the hell had happened to her world, she pulled up a chair, joining the fray, spending the next two hours in familial familiarity.
Eventually hugging her brother and her nephew goodbye, then, more awkwardly, Frohike and Byers, she was left with her mother and Skinner. She watched them both standing at the front door, waiting for the Gunmen to pull away from the curb. They were an awkwardly tall and small pair, her mother still balancing on crutches and boots, her boss with his hand friendly on her elbow, keeping her upright, the set looking, somehow, in some parallel universe … like they were supposed to be there, doing that exact thing, at that exact time … all the time.
She stared for too long apparently, because suddenly, there they were, looking at her, Maggie smiling, Skinner wondering, Scully dismissing outlandish ideas and poppycock notions as her grandmother used to say, “honey?”
Scully gave her standard, ‘I’m good’ smile, “yeah, sorry, just … lost track of time for a minute.” Turning on her heel, “I’ll go start the dishes.”
Maggie clumped after her, Skinner following behind, “you don’t have to do that. I can get them tomorrow.”
Hand already on faucet, “I don’t mind.” Calling to her boss, “Walter, grab a towel.”
“Back to Walter, I see,” as he retrieved the dish towel to begin drying.
“Dry them well, Walter or mom will make you wash them again.”
“Running a tight ship there, Maggie?”
Settling at the counter on a stool, Maggie reached for a stray cookie, “with four kids, it was tight ship or no ship and no ship meant chaos.” The silence hung only for a minute before Maggie broke it again, “Dana, what doctor’s appointment do you have tomorrow?”
Sidelong look at Skinner, who trained his gaze out the window, holding onto a shred of innocence, however falsely, given he knew she knew he spilled the beans about why she hadn’t gone with her partner. Had he been Mulder, she would have swung her leg up and kicked him in the rear end, “now, just promise not to get nervous, please, all right?”
“Dana, that is the silliest thing to tell someone and you know it. Now talk.”
“My nose has bled a few more times and Mulder made me promise to go back to the doctor. I made the appointment before Skinner … Walter …” glancing at him, “it really is awkward not to know which to call you now,” looking back at her mother, she continued, “called Mulder so Mulder told me to stay and fly out tomorrow after the appointment. Luckily he knows the sheriff and such out in Phoenix so he’ll have help until I get there.”
“Mulder told you to do something?” Skinner looked quite surprised, figuring Mulder would be dead if he ever told her to do anything.
“I know. I’m shocked I didn’t kill him on the spot.” Bouncing half a smile from Skinner to her mother, “things will be fine but I’d like to get to the bottom of this. I have a few ideas what it might be and I’ll take a look at the MRI myself as well.”
Maggie kept her motherly panic and clenched muscles to herself, exuding calm where no calm existed at present, “would you like company? You can pick me up and I can go with you.”
Knowing her mother and knowing the panic therein, nodded, “I’d like that. Thanks. I have the scan at 7am but I’ll come by and pick you up for the appointment around 3.”
“It’s nearly nine now. You should go home and get to bed if you want to be on-time.”
Once a mom, always a mom, regardless of age, stature and profession of children and she adored it, “I’ll head out in a few minutes. Just want to finish this and get some of my stuff from upstairs.”
Skinner finished his chore a moment after Scully, then, “I should be going as well.” Looking at Scully, “you’re not the only one who has somewhere to be at 7am tomorrow.”
Naturally, Maggie asked where and un-naturally, Skinner answered, an oddness in his voice conveying the nature of his life, a life where no one asked anything because there was no one to do the asking. Scully recognizing the familiar tone as well, having heard it from Mulder for the first year of their partnership, when she would inquire about his weekend or the new pile of books that appeared on the corner of his desk, the rustiness of voice, the stilted words trying to form a proper, conversational sentence.
She hugged him when she left, leaving him to put on his shoes while she headed out into the night.
