Asian Horror Cinema Roundup & Thoughts

So, when we set out on this particular film series quest, I had a few limitations to work with: 

They had to be movies that we hadn’t already seen, which meant skipping some of the biggest and most influential titles (Ringu, The Grudge, Dark Water, etc etc.)

I wanted as diverse a selection as I could to mix up multiple countries and time periods

The movies all had to be things I could find streaming online, which cut about half of my initial selections out of the running

Some overall thoughts: 

Japan takes the cake for fucking weird. Which is not a shock to anyone, probably, but it’s very clear that Japan isn’t afraid to get bizarre, and has been doing some super weird shit from the very beginning. 

India doesn’t seem to take itself very seriously in the horror film department, lol. Not all of the movies were Bollywood musicals, although a couple were. But even the non-musicals were all pretty silly. 

Mainland China doesn’t really make horror movies these days as far as I know but Hong Kong sure does and the ones I’ve seen are all brutal. They don’t seem to mind pushing the envelope there one bit. 

South Korea is the same. I have a deep fondness for Korean films, and I think I tend to enjoy them more than Japanese exports because they tend to be more grounded and often politically biting. 

Our next batch of horror movies is going to be a catch-up with new releases since we’re a couple years behind at this point. The hashtag for those will be #horror-new-releases so keep an eye out for that in the upcoming weeks.

okay so i literally had to make a list of all the dcoms i consider underrated and then narrow down a top 5. theres lots of dcoms that i love, but that i think got the right amount of attention and care (like lemonade mouth and the teen beach movies, for example), so this list just focuses on ones that deserved more hype for their quality level.

5. The Cheetah Girls: One World (2008)

okay so even as i type this i feel like a hypocrite. i have only watched this movie one time. BUT i can acknowledge that its one of the most criminally underrated dcoms ever, tons of people didnt watch it simply because raven wasnt in it. thats why i avoided it as a child, and i didnt get around to watching it until i did my big dcom binge in 2016. and it was so good. theres a really long post floating somewhere around tumblr full of specifics on why its actually the best cheetah girls movie (my favorite is the second one purely out of nostalgia), so to paraphrase some points from that post:

its a solid example of cultural appreciation, rather than appropriation, as the girls go and learn about bollywood and indian culture together

the indian characters arent treated like props or unimportant sides, they get their own agency and storylines that are important

the songs are good!!!

basically this movie was overlooked and slept on even though in terms of role modeling and social value, and just like the first two cheetah girls movies it was important and impactful.

4. Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure (2011)

okay so as someone whos very neutral and occasionally negative-leaning towards the hsm franchise (mostly bc its overhyped and not really representative of all dcoms), i was pleasantly surprised by sharpays fabulous adventure. this is another one that i know lots of people skipped right over and dont hold with as much esteem as the main hsm franchise, and that doesnt sit right with me.

i do not agree with the “uwu sharpay was the real victim in hsm” arguments bc in their efforts to look galaxy brained the people who say that overlook the fact that she was a rich white woman who used her power and status to exercise control over opportunities that should have been fairly and freely available for all; they were not “making a mockery of her theater” in the first movie, they were literally just kids who wanted to try out a new school activity that everyone was supposed to be allowed to participate in; and despite allegedly learning her lesson and singing we’re all in this together with everyone at the end of the first movie, she literally showed no growth in the second movie as she fostered an openly hostile environment and favored troy so heavily that it literally cost him his friends, all as part of yet another jealous plan to take things away from people who already have less than her. she was NOT the victim in the main franchise, and she did not seem to exhibit any growth or introspection either.

and that!!! is why sharpays fabulous adventure was so important. in focusing on sharpay as the main character, they finally had to make her likeable. they did this by showing actual real growth and putting her outside of her sphere of influence and control. we saw true vulnerability from her, instead of the basic ass “mean girl is sad bc shes actually just super insecure” trope (cough cough radio rebel), and this opened us up to finally learn about and care about her character. throughout the movie we see her learn, from her love interests example, how to care for others and be considerate. she faces actual adversity and works through it, asking herself what she truly wants and what shes capable of. and in the end, when she finally has her big moment, we’re happy for her bc she worked hard to get there. she becomes a star through her own merit and determination, rather than through money and connections. this movie is not perfect by any means, but it is severely underrated for the amount of substance it adds to sharpays character.

3. The Swap (2016)

okay i know im gonna get shit for this but thats why its on this list!!! just like sharpays fabulous adventure, its not perfect and definitely misses the mark sometimes, but it deserves more attention and love for all the things it did get right!

the swap follows two kids who accidentally switch bodies because of their emotional attachment to their dead/absent parents’ phones. and while i normally HATE the tv/movie trope of a dead parent being the only thing that builds quick sympathy for a young character, they definitely expanded well enough to where we could root for these kids even without the tragedy aspect. we see them go through their daily struggles and get a feel for their motivations as characters pretty well. as a body switching movie, we expect it to be all goofy and wacky and lighthearted, but it moves beyond that in unexpected ways.

the reason the swap is on this list is for its surprisingly thoughtful commentary on gender roles. its by no means a feminist masterpiece, and its not going to radicalize kids who watch it, but it conveys a subtle, heartfelt message that deserves more appreciation. the characters struggle with the concept of gender in a very accurate way for their age, making off-base comments and feeling trapped by the weight of expectations they cant quite put their finger on. we watch them feel both at odds with and relieved by the gender roles they are expected and allowed to perform in each others bodies, and one of the most interesting parts of the movie to me is their interactions with the other kids around them. as a result of their feeling out of place in each others environments, the kids inadvertently change each others friendships for the better by introducing new communication styles and brave authenticity. 

the value of this movie is the subtle, but genuine way it shows the characters growing through being given the space to act in conflicting ways to their expected norms. ellie realizes that relationships dont have to be complex, confusing, and painful, and that its okay to not live up to appearances and images. jack learns that emotional expression is good, healthy, and especially essential to the grieving process. one of the most powerful scenes in the movie comes at the end where, after ellie confronts jacks dad in his body, jack returns as himself to a very heartfelt apology from his father for being too hard on him; the explicit message (”boys can cry”) is paired with an open expression of love and appreciation for his kids that he didnt feel comfortable displaying until his son set an example through honest communication. this is such an empowering scene and overall an empowering movie for kids who may feel stuck in their expected roles, as it sets a positive example for having the courage to break the restrictive societal mold. for its overall message of the importance of introspection and emotional intelligence, the swap is extremely underrated.

2. Freaky Friday (2018)

this is my favorite dcom, and probably my favorite movie at this point. ive always assigned a lot of personal value to this movie (and i love every freaky friday in general), for the message of selfless familial love and understanding. i know i can get carried away talking about this topic; i got an anon ask MONTHS ago asking me about the freaky friday movies and i wrote a super super long detailed response that i never posted bc i didnt quite finish talking about the 2018 movie. and thats bc on a personal level, i cant adequately convey all the love i have for this movie. so i will try to keep this short.

first lets state the obvious: the reason people dont like this movie is bc its not the lindsay lohan version. and i get that, to an extent, bc i also love the 2003 version and its one of my ultimate comfort movies, and grew up watching it and ive seen it a billion times. i even watched it a couple days ago. but the nostalgia goggles that people have on from the early 2000s severely clouds their judgement of the wonderful 2018 remake.

yes, the 2018 version is dorky, overly simplistic plot wise, a bit stiff at times, and super cheesy like any dcom. the writing isnt 100% all the time. the narrative takes a couple confusing turns. the song biology probably shouldnt have been included. i understand this. but at the heart of it all, this movies value is love. and its edge over all the other freaky friday movies is the songs.

on a personal level, the movie speaks heavily to me. i cried very early into my first viewing of the movie bc i got to see dara renee, a dark-skinned, non-skinny actress, playing the mean popular girl on disney channel. that has never happened before. growing up, i saw the sharpays and all the other super thin white women get to be the “popular” girls on tv, and ultimately they were taken down in the end for being mean, but that doesnt change the fact that they were given power and status in the first place for being conventionally beautiful. so, watching dara renee strut around confidently and sing about being the queen bee at this high school got to me immediately. and in general, the supporting cast members of color really mean a lot to me in this movie. we get to see adam, an asian male love interest for the main character. we have a second interracial relationship in the movie with katherines marriage to mike. ellies best friend karl is hispanic. and we see these characters have depth and plot significance, we see them show love, care, and passion for the things they value. the brown faces in this movie are comforting to me personally. additionally, the loving, blended family dynamic is important to me as someone in a close-knit, affectionate step-family.

but on a more general level, this movie is underrated for its skillful musical storytelling and the way it conveys all kinds of love and appreciation. in true freaky friday fashion, we watch ellie and katherine stumble and misstep in their attempts to act like each other. its goofy and fun. but through it all, the music always captures the characters’ intimate thoughts and feelings. the opening song gives us a meaningful view into ellie and katherines relationship and the fundamental misunderstandings that play a role in straining their connection. ellie sings about how she thinks her mom wants her to be perfect, and her katherine sings about all the wonderful traits she sees in her daughter and how she wants her to be more open and self assured. this is meaningful bc even as theyre mad at each other, the love comes through. the songs continue to bring on the emotional weight of the story, as ellie sings to her little brother about her feelings of hurt and abandonment in her fathers absence. the song “go” and its accompanying hunt scene always make me cry bc of the childlike wonder and sense of adventure that it brings. for the kids, its a coming of age, introspective song. for katherine who gets to participate in ellies body, its a reminder of youth and the rich, full life her daughter has ahead of her. she is overcome with excitement, both from getting to be a teenager again for a day, and from the realization that her daughter has a support network and passions that are all her own. today and ev’ry day, the second to last song, is the culmination of the lessons learned throughout the movie, a mother and daughters tearful commitment to each other to love, protect, and understand one another. the line “if today is every day, i will hold you and protect you, i wont let this thing affect you” gets to me every time. even when things are hard and dont go according to plan, they still agree, in this moment, to be there for each other. and thats what all freaky friday stories are ultimately about.

freaky friday 2018 is a beautiful, inclusive, subversive display of familial love, sacrifice, and selflessness, and it is underrated and overlooked because of its more popular predecessor.

1. Let It Shine (2012)

this is another one of my favorite dcoms and movies in the whole world. unlike the other movies on this list, it is not the viewers themselves that contribute to the underrated-ness of this movie. disney severely under-promoted and under-hyped this movie in comparison to its other big musical franchises, and i will give you five guesses as to why, but youll only need one!

let it shine is the most beautifully, unapologetically black dcom in the whole collection. (i would put jump in! at a notable second in this category, but that one wasnt underrated). this movie was clearly crafted with care and consideration. little black kids got to see an entire dcom cast that represented them. the vernacular used in the script is still tailored mostly to white-favoring audiences, but with some relevant slang thrown in there. in short, the writers got away with the most blackness they were allowed to inject into a disney channel project.

the story centers on rap music and its underground community in atlanta, georgia. it portrays misconceptions surrounding rap, using a church setting as a catalyst for a very real debate surrounding a generational, mutlicultural conflict. this was not a “safe” movie for disney, given its emphasis on religious clashes with contemporary values. it lightly touches on issues of image policing within the black community (cyrus’s father talking about how “our boys” are running around with sagging pants and “our girls” are straying away from god), which is a very real and pressing problem for black kids who feel the pressure (from all sides) of representing their whole race with their actions. its a fun, adorable story about being yourself and staying true to your art, but also a skillful representation of struggles unique to black and brown kids and children from religious backgrounds.

on top of crafting a fun, wholesome, thoughtful narrative and likeable protagonists, let it shine brought us what is in my opinion the BEST dcom soundtrack of all time. every single song is a bop. theyre fast, fun, and lyrically engaging. “me and you” is my favorite disney channel song of all time due to its narrative significance; i will never forget my first time watching the movie and seeing that big reveal unfold onstage, as a conversation and a plot summary all wrapped into a song. the amount of thought and care that went into the music of this movie should have been rewarded with a level of attention on par with that of other musical dcoms.

if disney channel had simply cared about let it shine more, it couldve spanned franchises and sold songs the way that other musical dcoms have drawn in success. i would have loved for a sequel that explored and fleshed out cyrus’s neighborhood a little bit more, and maybe dipped into that underground scene they caught a glimpse of. i wanted a follow up on the changed church community once cyrus’s father started supporting his sons vision. i want so much more for these characters and this world than disney gave them in just one movie.

for its bold, unabashed representation of blackness and religion, subtle, nuanced presentation of race-specific issues, strong, likeable characters, and complex, thoughtful songs, let it shine is the most underrated dcom.

A genre that has always been one of my favorites is thriller. The suspense building up slowly and steadily leading to a plot twist, which makes the much-awaited conclusion satisfying and jaw-dropping. Experiencing thrillers is always fun and exciting, but making them is one of the toughest jobs. So here is 10 modern bollywood thrillers that will surely keep you on the edge of your seat.

1. ANDHADHUN (DIR. SRIRAM RAGHAVAN)

One of the biggest successes in the industry in 2018 is the film Andhahun by Sriram Raghavan. Inspired by a French short film ‘The Piano Turner’, the film follows a blind pianist witnessing the murder scene of a former actor, who happens to have a gorgeous yet deceiving wife. That’s all I can give you as I am afraid if it would spoil the entire experience for you. If you haven’t seen this movie yet, I recommend you to do so on Netflix. You won’t be disappointed.

2. KAHAANI (DIR. SUJOY GHOSH)

One of the best thrillers Bollywood has to offer is Kahaani  by Sujoy Ghosh. This award-winning film is about a pregnant woman navigating the huge city of Kolkata to find her missing husband. The amazing storytelling accompanied with Vidya Balan’s acting skills is a roller coaster of a ride and the plot twist at the end is just mind-blowing! Definitely watch it on Netflix.

3. SPECIAL 26 (DIR. NEERAJ PANDEY)

After impressing us with A Wednesday, Neeraj Pandey comes out with Special 26. Based on the 1987 Opera House Heist, the movie is about a group of con men disguising as CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) officers to perform raids in many politicians and businessmen’s homes and the real CBI officer attempts to catch them in their upcoming raid at a jewelry store. This hit movie will definitely keep you captivated and is available of Netflix.

4. BADLA (DIR. SUJOY GHOSH)

The duo of Pannu and Bachchan is back at it again after their hit movie Pink, with the thriller Badla by Sujoy Ghosh. The story revolves around a rich businesswoman accused of murdering her ex-lover and her lawyer helping her. The entire movie will keep you guessing and give you an astonishing but satisfying conclusion. Definitely one of my favorites and accessible on Netflix.

5.  KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK (DIR. VIJAY LALWANI)

From the director Vijay Lalwani, Karthik Calling Karthik is about a man’s life spiraling out of control and just when he is about to lose hope, he starts getting calls from an unknown person who knows all about him. Being the first film to make me fall in love with thrillers, it holds a special place in my heart. This movie is intriguing and nail-biting and it will make you think about it for days and days.

6. DRISHYAM (DIR. NISHIKANT KAMAT)

The movie Drishyam is directed by Nishikant Kamat and is a Bollywood remake of the Malayalam film of the same name.The movie follows a humble man making drastic decisions to protect his family from going to jail. Although the movie is a remake, it still has great direction and performances and even though I knew what would happen as I watched the original, it still managed to keep me on the edge. The movie is available on Netflix.

7. TE3N (DIR. RIBHU DASGUPTA)

At first I wanted to avoid watching this movie because I didn’t want to feel the sadness of Bachchan’s character as I was going through my tough times too. But when I finally got to watching it on Netflix, I was not at all disappointed. The film by Ribhu Dasgupta is about a grandfather trying to search the kidnapper of his granddaughter with an inspector and a priest. The movie is unpredictable and keeps you glued to the screen.

8. A DEATH IN THE GUNJ (DIR. KONKONA SEN SHARMA)

Marking the start of Konkona Sen Sharma’s directing venture, A Death in the Gunj is about a university student that spends his vacation with his relatives and learns about what it takes to be a man. Exploring themes like masculinity, the movie is visually stunning and is heartbreaking. Although it isn’t an extreme thriller like the ones mentioned above, it is still very beautiful and underrated. Catch this masterpiece on Amazon Prime.

9. BADLAPUR (DIR. SRIRAM RAGHAVAN)

Another one from Sriram Raghavan, Badlapur concentrates on a husband whose wife and son was murdered and is now set on getting revenge on people who did it. Walking in to watch this movie, I didn’t expect Varun Dhawan, an actor predominantly working in rom-coms, to give such a terrifying performance. So along with that and the supporting cast and amazing script, the movie was one hell of a ride to witness and is a definite must-watch.

10. NH10 (DIR. NAVDEEP SINGH)

A true gem from Anushka Sharma’s Clean Slate Films, NH10 is about a woman avenging her husband’s murder after they witness an honor killing. Easily one of Sharma’s best performances, the movie is brutal and vile and shows you the ugly side of India well. The script and premise is intriguing and gripping and the cast gives their best (especially Kumaar as the villain). Give it a watch and experience the intensity it yourself.

The Worst of 2019

I had to follow-up my “Best of 2019″ list with its opposite universe counterpart but before I give the movies that made me suffer another lashing, let’s make a couple of things clear. I’m not a paid professional and even if I was, all I would be is a film critic. Making movies is hard. Nobody in the industry aims to do a bad job - there are much easier ways to make a living. Even though I might’ve hated these films with a passion that still smolders now, I’ve got mad respect for anyone who decides to put themselves out there and put together a movie. At the end of the day, your work is going to live on. You made something millions will see. Me? I’ll ultimately fade away. Take this into consideration as we single out the movies that tried and failed, sometimes spectacularly.

10. Cats

Cats is the kind of movie that doesn’t come around often. It’s actually kind of fascinating to watch, or it would be if it weren’t so boring. Rebel Wilson (who was destined to have a movie on this list when she starred in The Hustle) plays a cat who unzips her skin to reveal an outfit… above her skin again? She leads a choreographed troupe of singing mice and cockroaches that fill you with terror and confusion. It’s as if they’ve been scaled so the actors could scoop them up and swallow them whole - as cats would do - but because human proportions are so different from cat’s the objects and other animals they interact with change size from scene to scene. Meanwhile, Idris Elba is prowling around with his coat all open, his non-existent junk exposed to all who want to see. Our main character is so bland and unmemorable she makes no impact on you whatsoever. There’s magic in a plot that’s composed almost entirely of introductions - which might make it accurate to the broadway show but not entertaining as a movie -, dodgy special effects in every frame, lame jokes coming from the left and the right… and yet, I don’t hate this film like I do the others on this list. In fact, a part of me even admires Cats.

The thing is, had this movie worked, it would’ve been hailed as genius. It didn’t so it’s being ridiculed but I have to give it points for its ambition and willingness to take chances. That means a lot in a year in which every single one of the top ten grossing films were sequels, remakes or expansions of already-existing properties.The gamble didn’t pay off, but Cats had the guts to walk up to the plate.

9. Dumbo

I was tempted to lump The Lion King and Aladdin along with this tale of a baby elephant that learns to fly while a family of circus performers learn that the big circus tycoon played by Michael Keaton is a meanie. Few of the Disney “live-action” remakes do anything to validate their existence. They’re just feeding you what you can already watch at home for free because you probably already own the originals on home video or you have Disney+. I’m going to single out Dumbo as the worst because it actually tried something different and failed spectacularly. This means we can expect all future Disney remakes to take as few chances as possible.

8. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

There are other movies I could’ve put in this spot (see the Runner-Ups section below for examples) but I had to consider the experience as well as the movie itself. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is an unfunny comedy that walks into the room as if it’s going to marry your mother and be your new father. It makes fun of the very thing it’s doing. This might make it appealing to members of the “View Askewniverse” cult but not to me. Whether you’ve been brainwashed by Kevin Smith or not, it’s impossible to sit through the painful bonus material which follows the film, particularly the interviews conducted by Jason Mewes. The actor displays no charisma whatsoever while asking questions you don’t care about to people who obviously don’t want to be on camera. I get what Smith was doing; he was trying to give his fans more than just the movie but anyone in their right mind should’ve seen the bonus footage and burned it.

4. Dark Phoenix

What a disappointing way to end the X-Men franchise. Dull until the very end and then interesting for just enough time to make you realize you didn’t just dream it all, the movie was a bad idea from the start. We haven’t known the young version of the X-Men long enough for this story to mean anything and the choices made to make this story more faithful to the comics makes you wonder if you stepped into the wrong movie. Even before seeing Dark Phoenix, I thought people were being too harsh on The Last Stand. They did a lot of things wrong in 2006 but they had the good sense to leave out the aliens. It’s not great but it’s been somewhat redeemed since because its plot advanced the series and meant something in the end. Even if Disney had considered keeping this franchise alive while it was acquiring Fox, this is such a mess they now have no choice but to reboot the whole thing.

4. Jexi

Jexi feels like it just escaped from a time capsule. Even when it would’ve been new, it wouldn’t have been funny. This had no business appearing in theatres and watching the trailer again reminded me of why I hated it as much as I did. If you suspect you have mutant powers that just need to be unlocked by a traumatic or life-altering event, barricade your doors and start playing this movie. You’ll want to escape so desperately, you might suddenly develop the ability to bend space and time.

6. Rambo: Last Blood

This 5th entry in the Rambo series didn’t even have the guts to commit to being a proper conclusion. The titular character appears to succumb to his wounds as the picture closes… only to get up and go find medical attention during the end credits. Senselessly gory and violent, its depiction of Mexico leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

5. Shaft

No one was asking for this movie, not even fans of the original Richard Roundtree films or the 2000 Sam Jackson reboot. It tired story attempts to introduce a new version of the classic blaxploitation character to a new audience. In the process, it makes you hate the two “heroes” we follow through a generic plot filled with offensive humor. The only good thing about Shaft is that it prompted me to check out the originals.

3. My People, My Country

The Farewell made me think a lot about how we should view other cultures, particularly China. In it, Awkwafina’s Billi is caught in a moral dilemma when she learns her beloved grandmother is dying and that her family is keeping the secret from sweet Nai Nai. You go in thinking the American-raised woman is going to do the right thing by tearing the charade apart but it’s not long before you realize this scenario isn't that simple. When it comes to My People, My Country, I am going to judge. What’s the moral of this movie again? Give up your life, your dreams, your family for the sake of a country that sees you as nothing more than an expandable pion? If that weren’t bad enough, the movie’s so dull it’ll be an epic struggle to stay awake. Whose idea was it to have an entire segment of this anthology dedicated to the engineers who ensured the mechanism that would raise China’s flag in 1949? It’s as exciting as it sounds.

2. ¡Ay, mi madre!

The worst part of this list is that I know how few people reading will be able to relate. ¡Ay, mi madre! wasn't released theatrically in North America, but movies release “Straight to Netflix” have become such a big deal I’ll make an exception to my usual rule of disqualifying direct-to movies from this list. In terms of filmmaking, this is the worst movie I’ve seen in a long, long time. It’s more technically inept than anything else on this list by far. The comedy is so unfunny it’ll make you question your life, the actors are not convincing even before they open their mouths to speak and the ending might as well be a big middle finger towards the people watching. It ha no ending, almost as if they cobbled together the few salvageable strands of footage someone scooped out of the trash into something vaguely related to “coherent”. Remember the name so you know never to click “play” if you happen upon it like I did.

Simmba

I was deeply offended by this Bollywood film but technically, it’s a 2018 movie so I decided to only include it here. It’s loathsome but admittedly, my hatred for it has somewhat subsided since I saw it. Don’t ask me why. This movie sucks.

Playmobil The Movie

This is what we thought we were going to get when they announced “The Lego Movie”. Terrible songs, a lazy plot that makes terrible use of the property it’s advertising, unfunny jokes, and a lack of imagination guarantee this film is destined to make everyone involved regret the day it was released.

Hellboy

Yet another failed superhero movie that enthusiastically sets itself up for a sequel when it’s so obvious to everyone watching that there isn’t going to be one. The one thing it’s got going for it is a pretty cool scene towards the end where demons escape into our world and begin tearing civilians to pieces. To get to that, you must sit through endless scenes that bash you over the head with a mallet marked “Rated R”. Gallons of blood and intestines spilling onto the floor, doesn’t mean the movie is meant for adults. This was written by a teenager disguised as a grown-up.

Gemini man

They waited all these years for the de-aging technology to get where it is now… for this story? Someone should’ve pointed out to director Ang Lee when he was getting ready to film that training doesn’t alter your DNA. Why waste millions cloning Will Smith when you could just raise a normal kid and train them to be an assassin? Ultimately, the movie isn’t really all that bad. It’s watchable but it’s such a big disappointment it needs to be taught a lesson.

Replicas

I’m giving this one a break because no one saw it. I also think it’ll play better at home, where you’ll be free to make fun of it or verbally abuse the loopy plot aloud while your friends listen. If there’s a movie this year that was “So bad it’s good”, it’s this one.

After

At least “Twilight” had its original take on vampires and some danger mixed into its romantic triangle to keep things theoretically interesting. This film started off as - I kid you not - a “One Direction” fan-fic. The drama it serves up will have you howling like a werewolf flying through laughing gas. On the upside, a sequel is coming. In fact, the teaser is scheduled for today!

1. Unplanned

This was the most uncomfortable movie experience of 2019. Most of the Christian propaganda films don’t seem to put much effort into their production - they’re preaching to the choir so why should they? - but 2019 had Breakthrough, which was quite good. It showed these movies don’t have to appeal solely to the churches who will buy tickets en-masse. This movie is ridiculous, gory like a horror film, misleading, and phony. It did have what is undoubtedly the most outrageous and unintentionally funny dialogue of the year, however. “Fast food outlets look to break even on the hamburgers they sell. That’s all they do is break even ... Do you know where they make all their money? The french fries and soda. Low cost, high margin items. Abortion is our fries-and-soda.” Are we sure this was based on a true story? If so, I don’t know why the director decided to edit out the scenes in which Cheryl (Robia Scott) takes the buckets of aborted fetuses home to cook them. I think it would’ve really driven home how evil her character is. I felt dirty sitting in the theater next to people who ate this up.

The sci-fi film is being shot with a massive budget of 500 million rupees and is set to hit theaters on July 24, 2020. Saif Ali Khan is starring alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Manoj Bajpai and Manish Tiwari.

The trailer for the film was recently released and took the internet by storm after becoming the most-read movie trailer in India. The Dil Bechara trailer showed a blossoming love story between the two central characters, played by Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi. However, the makers did not show Saif Ali Khan in the trailer and he was removed from the internet after becoming one of the most popular movie trailers.

Dil Bechara with Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi was released digitally on Disney Hotstar on July 24. Saif recently spoke to a news outlet where he was asked to share his thoughts on the fact that Dil BeChara does not feature any of his favorite actors from his past films.

The film is a tribute to Sushant, who died of a heart attack on June 14 after a long battle with cancer at the age of 52.

1. Amit Trivedi - Manmarziyan

In a year when Amit Trivedi presented music for over 10 films, Manmarziyan is a clear winner. Consisting of 14 songs, including the unplugged version of Daryaa, this album has soul, passion, angst, and love. The film begins with the soft Grey Wala Shade, which not only sets the mood for the film, but also introduces the passionate affair of Rumi and Vicky in the heart of Amritsar. The film then transitions to F for Fyaar, which is a Punjabi rap representative of Vicky’s personality and his desire to be a ‘cool dude.’ Later, the peppy song Dhyaanchand, also shows off Vicky’s eccentricity as he dances following Rumi through the inner streets of Amritsar. Robbie’s grey shades are also represented through music, with Sherni, depicting his need to possess Rumi, and Bijlee Giregi, acting as a background to his conflicting feelings, when his trust is broken. There also exist some beautiful romantic, soothing numbers, such as Sacchi Mohabbat, Jaisi Teri Marzi, and Choonch Ladhiyan, which are used to express the growing love amongst all three characters, thus making the love triangle even more complicated. And lastly, there is the powerful and soulful Daryaa, which is the most important song of the film as it represents Rumi’s fickle emotions, which form the basis of the film. With a great quantity of songs, one would expect a few songs to be of lower quality. However, the beauty of this album is that every single song is crafted to fulfill a role in the film, hence making it the best album of the year.

2. Niladri Kumar, Joi Barua, Alif - Laila Majnu

The essence of Laila Majnu lies in its music. No tragic romance is complete without a set of heartbreaking melodies. The soundtrack of this film is unique because it is difficult to emotionally connect to it without the context of the plot and the picturization of each individual song in the vast hills of Kashmir. However, after completing the film, it is impossible to remove these soulful, melancholic melodies from the heart. The music is a supplement to the ongoing love story between Laila and Qais (Majnu) on screen, highlighting the strength and audacity of their love to withstand obstacles in the form of their family, separation, distance, and everlasting wait. Songs like Tum and Sarphiri, signify the transition from Laila’s initial curiosity to slight attraction, eventually leading to true love. On the other hand, there are Aahista and Hafiz Hafiz that focus entirely on Majnu and his transcendental craziness due to the increasing loneliness, once he has grown tired of waiting for Laila. Each and every song represents a different form of the powerful love between them, which is even more necessary when translating a classic, epic, romantic tale. There is also my favorite song of the year, the absolutely addictive O Meri Laila, which consists of classical rawness in its most bare moments, but emerges victorious through the rock-style leading stanza that is so beautifully voiced by Atif Aslam.

3. Amit Trivedi - Kedarnath

Despite having a fewer number of songs in comparison to the other albums on this list, Kedarnath, is able to provide an extremely wholesome album. It is the only one that has five or less songs and yet is still able to encompass a full range of stylistically different tracks. It includes a peppy dance number, Sweetheart, that is reminiscent of the melodic dance numbers that we have forgotten in this era of remakes and rapping. But along with that, it has two beautiful, soothing melodies and a religious track, which delves into the realm of Indian classical music. Amit Trivedi has yet again proven his versatility by providing a set of songs that are so different from one another, yet are able to come together to further enhance this film.

4. Amit Trivedi, Raftaar, Girish Nakod - Andhadhun

If you are a fan of Sriram Raghavan, you must know that he is obsessed with old Bollywood films, especially those from the 60s and 70s. His films, specifically Johnny Gaddaar and Andhadhun, have contained numerous references to older films. Therefore, while composing this soundtrack, Amit Trivedi paid homage to the classic old film songs. Song like Aap Se Milkar and Naina Da Kya Kasoor carry shades of the melodious numbers from the 60s and 70s. Naina Da Kya Kasoor specifically bears resemblance to the R.D. Burman hit song O Mere Sona from the 60s Vijay Anand film Teesri Manzil. To create balance in the album, he also includes some modern numbers such as the energetic Laila Laila, and the dark Wo Ladki, which uses a full orchestra of instruments to create a magnificent, epic effect. The best part of the music from this film is that all the songs are heavy on piano, unlike most Hindi songs, since the main character is a pianist, and the songs are picturized on him.

5. Rachita Arora, Nucleya - Mukkabaaz

Though Mukkabaaz is at its core a love story, a large part of the film is also devoted to boxing and Shravan Kumar’s passion for it. However, unlike most films dedicated to sports, this one delves into the dark side of the sports selection process. Hence, the songs are a reflection of this theme as they are both motivating, to create a driving force for Shravan’s passion, and hard-hitting, to reflect the grim state of the sports industry in India. Songs like Paintra are jarring, as is Nucleya’s signature style. On the other hand, songs like Bahut Hua Samman are there for motivation, while a song like Mushkil Hai Apna Meil Priye signifies the love between the two characters without delving away from the overall tone of the remaining songs.

Filmmaker on his kids’ B’wood plans, another collaboration with the actor, why he is more low-key than his peers and his next, an ode to The Godfather While Mahesh Manjrekar has featured in several Salman Khan-starrers, including Ready, Jai Ho, Bodyguard and the two Dabangg films, his long-time friendship with the 52-year-old actor transcends the screen. The filmmaker has been among the first responders every time Salman hit a low, while the actor took his son, Satya Manjrekar, under his wings early on. Now, he is working on launching Mahesh’s daughter, Ashwami. The National Award-winning filmmaker confirms the news, saying, “Yes, Salman is launching my daughter. It will happen in some time. We’ll cross the bridge when we get to it.” He describes his friend as the “most warm-hearted person in the industry,” adding, “We have always bonded well. Salman is the most rooted person I have come across, a complete middle-class man in his head. He knows that I am not in awe of him, and that makes our bond special.” The duo was to reunite for the Hindi remake of Mahesh’s 2010 Marathi directorial, Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho, with him as the director, and Salman as producer. But Mahesh reveals that the project is on hold for now. “For the lead, Salman wanted Govinda, who had apprehensions about the role, so things didn’t work out,” he reveals, addressing the film’s similarity to the Irrfan Khan-starrer Hindi Medium. “Our remake was planned much before Hindi Medium released. We will make it in the future as this subject is close to my heart. I honestly think our education system sucks,” he asserts. Mahesh is gearing up for the release of his next, Bhai: Vyakti Ki Valli, the biopic of renowned Marathi writer-humourist Pu La Deshpande, structured as a two-film franchise with both films releasing 45 days apart. He acknowledges the risks of splitting a film in two but explains that when they started shooting, they realised it is not possible to capture Deshpande’s life in two hours, hence the decision to make it in two parts. “I don’t really think about numbers while making a film. The films will release in succession as I don’t want my audience to forget the world of this man. I have faith in their love for Pu La Deshpande and confident that they would like the film,” he maintains, adding that Deshpande is known for his wit, so obviously his film has a lot of humour. “But its real USP is that the protagonist is not a larger-than-life person,” he points out, adding that he hopes film writers won’t make a mess of the biopicgenre. “We are 20 years behind Hollywood and slowly getting out of the hero-heroine-villain-vamp templates. We have realised that there are many good stories to be told.” He may have delivered some acclaimed titles as a director in Bollywood, but he remains a lowkey name. Mahesh attributes it to a lack of a good PR. “I prefer my films to do the talking and I am proud of my work,” he states, acknowledging that the industry thrives on box-office numbers. “I don’t have the figures to make headlines. I am happy to direct the films I love, and I would want to be remembered for my films and not the numbers.” Mahesh, whose 2000 Tabu-starrer Astitva won a National Award for Best Feature Film, believes that his Marathi directorial Natsamrat, featuring Nana Patekar, and Kakshparsh, with Sachin Khedekar, also deserved the prestigious prize. “But the jury don’t seem to like me. If not the film, Nana definitely deserved to win,” he avers. True to his low-key form, Mahesh informs that he recently wrapped up his next Hindi film, which is on the lines of The Godfather. “It was a dream to direct this film since early 2000s. I finally got it out of my system. It is a big film with prominent stars and it is an ode to Godfather,” he says, refusing to divulge more.

Jacqueline Fernandez (born 11 August 1985) is a Sri Lankan actress, former model, and the winner of the Miss Universe Sri Lanka pageant of 2006 who predominantly works in Bollywood. In 2009, she debuted in Bollywood with the movie Aladin and since then has established a career in the industry. Born into a multiracial family of Canadian, Sri Lankan, and Malaysian descent, Fernandez was raised in Bahrain. After graduating in mass communication from the University of Sydney and working as a television reporter in Sri Lanka, she joined the modeling industry. She was crowned Miss Universe Sri Lanka in 2006, and represented her country at Miss Universe 2006.

While on a modelling assignment in India in 2009, Fernandez successfully auditioned for Sujoy Ghosh’s fantasy drama Aladin, which marked her acting debut. Fernandez had her breakthrough role with the psychological thriller Murder 2 (2011), her first commercial success. This was followed by glamorous roles in the commercially successful ensemble-comedy Housefull 2 (2012) and the action thriller Race 2 (2013), which garnered her an IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination. Fernandez went on to star in the top-grossing action film Kick (2014) and the comedies Housefull 3 (2016) and Judwaa 2 (2017).

Alongside her screen acting career, Fernandez has worked as a judge in the ninth season of the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (2016–2017), is a popular celebrity endorser for various brands and products, has participated in stage shows, and is active in humanitarian work.

Fernandez was born in Manama, Bahrain, and was raised in a multi-ethnic family. Her father, Elroy Fernandez, is a Sri Lankan Burgher, and her mother, Kim, is of Malaysian descent. After receiving her early education in Bahrain, she studied mass communication at the University of Sydney in Australia. After graduating she worked as a television reporter in Sri Lanka. She played the love interest of Riteish Deshmukh’s character, a role based on the character of Princess Jasmine. and Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN felt that she was: “easy on the eyes and appears confident but has precious little to do”. Although the film was a critical and commercial failure, she won the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year — Female.

Mahesh Bhatt’s thriller Murder 2 was Fernandez’s first commercial success and marked a turning point in her career. She took on the role of Priya, a lonely model who is in a confused relationship with Arjun Bhagwat (played by Emraan Hashmi). Fernandez was praised for her performance, and for the boldness and sex appeal she displayed in the film.

The following year, Fernandez appeared in the ensemble comedy Housefull 2 alongside Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, and Asin. It became one of the top grossing productions of India that year and earned ₹1.86 billion (US$26 million) worldwide. Fernandez received mostly negative reviews for her performance. While Gaurav Malini praised her for her looks, NDTV called her a “blathering bimbo” who “find[s] no pleasure in [her role]”. Despite the negative reviews, Fernandez received a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the 14th IIFA Awards for her performance.

Fernandez’s first release of 2013 was Race 2, an ensemble action thriller (alongside Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham and Deepika Padukone). The film emerged as a commercial success, with the domestic gross of more than ₹1 billion (US$14 million).

In 2014, Fernandez appeared in Sajid Nadiadwala’s directorial debut — the action film Kick, a remake of a 2009 Telugu film of same name. She starred opposite Salman Khan, playing Shaina, a psychiatrist . She retained her real voice for the first time in Kick.[39] While Sneha May Francis commented that she is: “incredibly dazzling, and moves like a magic”, Raja Sen of Rediff.com was more critical of her dialogue delivery, calling it “unfortunate.” The film received mixed reviews from critics, but with worldwide revenue of over ₹3.75 billion (US$53 million), it became the fourth highest-grossing Bollywood film. The film established Fernandez as one of the most popular Bollywood actresses.

In 2015, Fernandez featured in Vicky Singh’s Roy, a romantic thriller, which critic Sarita A. Tanwar described as a “boring, exhausting and pretentious” film. She played dual roles, Ayesha Aamir, a filmmaker in a relationship with another filmmaker (played by Arjun Rampal) and Tia Desai, a girl in love with a thief (played by Ranbir Kapoor).

Karan Malhotra’s action drama Brothers was Fernandez’s next release. Co-starring alongside Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra, Fernandez played Jenny, a fearless mother struggling for her child, a role which she described as “challenging”, “intense”, and “difficult”. The role marked a departure from the glamorous characters that she had a reputation for portraying. Later that year, she starred in the horror thriller Definition of Fear, which marked her Hollywood debut.

Fernandez began 2016 with a role in the sequel to Housefull 2. The ensemble comedy film paired her with Akshay Kumar as her love interest. The film was a commercial success, grossing ₹1.88 billion (US$26 million) worldwide. Her next film — the action adventure Dishoom — also grossed ₹1 billion (US$14 million) at the box-office. Later that year, she served as a judge to the ninth season of the dance show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.

In 2017, she appeared in David Dhawan’s comedy film Judwaa 2, opposite Varun Dhawan and Taapsee Pannu. It was a sequel to the 1997 comedy film Judwaa. The film proved to be a box-office success. In 2018, she starred alongside Salman Khan in Race 3, the third addition to the Race Franchise.

She is filming Tarun Mansukhani’s next, Drive opposite Sushant Singh Rajput. She has recently starred in the Netflix original film, Mrs. Serial Killer, directed by Shirish Kunder.

In 2008 and 2011, Fernandez featured in the UK magazine Eastern Eye’s “World’s Sexiest Asian Women” list, ranking twelfth. She was ranked third on The Times of India’s listing of the “Most Desirable Woman” in 2013 and 2014, after being ranked eighth, seventh and fourteenth, respectively, in the preceding three years. In 2013, Rediff.com placed her on their list of “Bollywood’s Best Dressed Actresses”. Spoilers after the break

Alex got busted by fiancé Rebecca and it was the day of reckoning in Mumbai. As the series reached its midway point, here’s all the talking points from McMafia's eventful episode four…

The god of Mumbai is no more

It was Breaking Bad, Bollywood-style. After the tip-off from the mysterious Mexican shipping tycoon Antonio Mendez (Caio Blat) in episode three, ambitious young pretender Dilly Mahmood (a raw, swaggering turn from Nawazuddin Siddiqui) was ready to steal a one-tonne drug shipment from under the nose of reigning Indian godfather Benny Chopra (Atul Kale).

We watched the heroin get slid through pipes to bypass the barbed wire fences along the Pakistan border, then get welded into washing machines for transporting. A dirty business indeed. It’d take more than a boil wash to get those moral stains out.

With the help of a nocturnal raid on Benny’s office, his hapless late-working accountant (coldly shot in the head for his trouble) and terrifyingly talented hacker Jay “Jammy” Chohan (Vishwas Kini), Dilly gleaned all the info he needed to pull off an audacious heist. It was knuckle-gnawingly tense as cargo containers were intercepted and fake security passes checked, but he pulled it off and the fateful Srikkanth Steel container was last seen driving off into the Mumbai night.

I found myself rooting for Dilly, despite his mercurial moods that turned on a rupee – quick to slap (or shoot) those who displeased him. The final scene saw some enterprising young urchins take Dilly to Chopra’s corpse, dumped and undignified on a rubbish tip – presumably executed by silently seething Russian mob boss Vadim Kalyagin (Merab Ninidze) for bungling the operation.

“Who’s god now?” snarled Dilly, respectfully closing the dead man’s eyes – before spitting on his corpse and striding off to seize control of his new criminal empire. It was a changing of the gangland guard.

Kleiman put it on Alex’s conscience

Puppet-master politician Semiyon Kleiman (David Strathairn) ensured it was hedge fund manager Alex Godman (James Norton) who gave the heroin heist the go-ahead. After all, the intel had come from his source, he’d transferred the necessary funds and even found the crucial computer hacker.

This seems to be the manipulative strategy of choice in McMafia world. Kleiman had made Alex responsible for Reznik’s death in Prague two episodes ago and now we saw Dilly do likewise with the unlucky accountant.

When Alex gave the nod – a cryptic “Let me know how it goes” down the phone – he crossed a line. He wasn’t just sitting behind a keyboard anymore. His soft banker’s hands had blood on them and it wouldn’t come off in the shower – even if that scene did fulfil the Norton flesh quota for this episode.

Heroic hackers ran the show

How very 21st century. It was two computer hackers who became the key cogs in the global crime machine.

When Godman Capital’s “heavy metal IT guy” Tobe Miller (Joshua James) was mentioned in passing in episode three, we suspected he’d have a bigger role to play. And so it proved. With suspicious sidekick Karin (Kemi-Bo Jacobs) sniffing around his shady global fund, Alex rehired Tobe on a freelance basis to cover his electronic trail.

We enjoyed Alex and Tobe’s wary stand-off becoming a budding friendship. “Fortunately for you, I know as much about financial fraud as you do about cyber-security,” said the sarky IT nerd, shyly avoiding eye contact and sporting a T-shirt by real-life Indonesian hardcore band Burgerkill.

The pair then bickered amusingly over who worked harder, had more friends and the most fun, before Tobe shrugged: “Trust me, in this world, you’re an innocent.” I wouldn’t be so sure anymore.

It was Tobe who recommended chatroom buddy Jammy as the best hacker in India. Dilly soon barged into his Bangalore home for some of his unique brand of persuasion – sweetened by a cricket bat signed by Indian superstar Virat Kohli for Jammy’s cricket-mad son. (A neat echo of this came later, when the slumdogs pointed out Chopra’s cadaver with an altogether scruffier bat.)

Jammy duly did Dilly’s bidding by hacking into a circuitous chain of restaurant booking systems, email inboxes, chocolate vending machines and, ultimately, the wi-fi network at Mumbai Port Authority. “It’s like Pac-Man,” said Dilly with grudging admiration. But will it soon be game over?

Is Rebecca and Alex’s relationship doomed?

Back in London, Karin found that Alex’s new fund wasn’t just password-protected but he was running it solo, with no reports filed to colleagues. Meanwhile, fiancé Rebecca Harper (Juliet Rylance) found his secret second phone.

The two women met up to discuss their worries at the historic and aptly-named Hung, Drawn & Quartered pub in Tower Hill (half a Guinness for Rebecca – a hint that she’s about to fall pregnant, possibly?). Rebecca’s discovery that Alex had also been checking the weather in the Cayman Islands, Cyprus, Dubai, Tel Aviv and Geneva confirmed her suspicions and she confronted Alex.

“I invest in emerging markets,” he explained. “I work in these places and so do you.” “But I don’t visit tax havens and offshore sinkholes to launder some corrupt politician’s dirty money,” she retorted, as all her speeches about ethical capitalism came back to bite him.

His insistence that “You’re all I care about” followed episode three’s assertion: “Without you, I have no idea who I am.” For Alex, his relationship with Rebecca maintains his delusion that he’s still got “moral integrity” and is “doing things the right way, without my family’s involvement”. If he loses Rebecca, he might well lose his remaining moral compass too.

He came clean – well, partially – and promised to pull out, now that his business is back on its feet. Yet surely he’s in far too deep to escape now? And has all trust gone between the golden couple?

Prague problems led Vadim to rumble Kleiman

Determined to get his counterfeiting operation back on-track in the Czech capital, Vadim coldly shrugged off the murder in episode three (“A cop? He was a thief, stealing my goods”) and put new nemesis Karel Benes (Karel Roden) under surveillance.

The ex-policeman was too careful, so this proved unfruitful – but FSB insider Ilya Fedorov (Kirill Pirogov) found a way. He had drugs planted on Benes’ wildchild daughter, hacked her phone and piggybacked onto her father’s.

The call log soon revealed that it was Kleiman who was backing Benes’ sabotage of Vadim’s business and that they met in Prague shortly before Reznik “fell” from his apartment balcony. Crucially, Vadim also learnt that Kleiman had “an assistant” with him.

Remember Mendez admonishing Alex for lax security after travelling under his own passport? As Kleiman had warned his new protégé: “It won’t be long until Vadim traces it back to you and me.” The Russians could be coming, like they did for Uncle Boris (David Dencik).

Our hero’s family is falling apart

Since his infidelity was exposed in episode three, Dmitri (Aleksey Serebryakov, who also plays the titular medic in the Russian remake of House MD, fact fans) has been well and truly in the doghouse. Wife Oksana (Maria Shukshina) refused to chink her husband’s glass during the most awkward engagement drinks ever, and later told him: “You and the children are my whole life. You have spat on my soul.” Dmitri was on his knees begging for forgiveness. None was forthcoming.

We’re concerned about Alex’s sister Katya (Faye Marsay) too. She kicked off about the quality of her father’s champagne – cava, how ghastly – before the sound of breaking glass as she rowed with long-suffering boyfriend Femi (Clifford Samuel). Katya also seems to increasingly have the cocaine sniffles.

With all this talk of family being everything – by both Oksana and Alex – could Katya be the way his enemies get to Alex? The business end of the series promises to be explosive
