What have you learned the hard way? It takes a great deal of patience and commitment to formulate a good soap, or any skincare product. There are no shortcuts - you need to commit the time, resources, focus and energy. There are lots of failed attempts. You will end up using A LOT of soap yourself.

If you could do another job what would you like to do and why? I am a fair weather person - during the Summer I would like to work in a herb garden and look after plants all day long - being surrounded by nature, with a straw hat on my head, a Thermos flask of tea and a picnic lunch in my basket. Then in Winter you would find me in front of the fire - looking through all the seed catalogues and gardening books, planning the fair weather days.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to do what you are doing? You will need to learn a great deal, go on workshops and courses, follow all the professional makers, buy good books on the subject, practice, practice, practice, and develop your own distinctive products. The toiletries and skincare market is very crowded - you will need your own USP (unique selling proposition) and good branding and packaging too. I would say, go and work for others for a few years first and watch and learn all the sides of the business - from finance to sourcing, origination, production, sales, distribution etc. With every job comes an apprenticeship period that will stand you in good stead for the future.

If you could be someone for a day who would it be? I would like to be Jo Malone - she has such a wonderful sense of smell, ability to create new fragrances and market them in an extremely overcrowded market. She sold her eponymous business to Estée Lauder and then created Jo Loves. She has overcome huge personal adversity without losing her enthusiasm and smile - what a brilliant entrepreneur and positive, engaging role model to all who follow.

Do you have a secret ambition still to achieve? So many - I would love for Farm Soap Co. to grow as a business and be stocked in my favourite lifestyle stores and boutique hotels and B&Bs. My ambition is to keep learning and developing, producing really good botanical skincare products and toiletries for all my customers to enjoy.

What is your personal motto? Keep your head and hopes high.

If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it? Enjoy a really long, hot bath with essential oils and bath salts, a glass of cold Prosecco in hand, woody, scented candles flickering, a warm, white fluffy towel on the radiator and clean flannel pyjamas. I am totally rock & roll!

How would you like to be remembered? She came. She saw. She made it happen. Then she had a bath.

Robert, who’s 14, is back to tell you about our summer trip to Dorset – a place we would highly recommend for a family summer holiday.

Over to him:

“At the beginning of the summer holidays my parents and I drove to Dorset for a wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable week-long visit. We stayed in a cottage around a ten-minute drive from Weymouth. It had two rooms, a bathroom with a shower, a kitchen area, living room and basically everything you would want in a living accommodation. It was a lovely place to relax in the evening; reading books, watching TV and playing games. 

Weymouth

To say Weymouth is busy on a summer weekend is a huge understatement. Parking was hard to come by (although we did find a space every time) and the beaches and streets were bustling with locals and tourists alike. However, it never felt too crowded and there weren’t long queues for refreshments or long waits to get a meal. The beach was lovely – we rented deckchairs for £2 each – and spent a good few hours there on our first day. The sea was amazing to paddle, wade and swim in as there were basically no waves at all – due to the natural defences at Chesil beach.  

There are so many places to get an ice-cream or slushie in Weymouth and even more places to get yourself a quick lunch in the afternoon. Be warned though: a majority of the cafes and shops close relatively early and on our first night we found ourselves wandering the streets for a while before deciding on getting food to heat up at home. Weymouth and the surrounding area is not short of massive supermarkets and we had dinner in our cottage every night bar one, so the shops closing early is not a major problem. 

Chesil Beach

After relaxing in the sand on Weymouth’s coastline we drove about twenty minutes to a completely different type of beach. Chesil beach is the largest tombolo in the UK and is 28 kilometres of pure pebbles which increase in size as you move across. The stretch is classified as a Heritage site so you are not allowed to take any rocks home with you although you can obviously pick them up. The sheer size of the beach was impressive and it was a beautiful to go and have a look at. There is a great exhibition about the beach inside the visitor centre with lots of things to touch and look at including fossils, animal bones and millions of years old rocks. For a free attraction I would definitely recommend going, if only to have a quick look.

Cycling 

The next day we set out on a cycling trip organised by Jurassic Trails. We got our bikes and helmets then proceeded to begin our journey down the many cycle lanes and general streets in the area. We got lost almost straight away, we’ll blame it on the lack of clear signs, and ended up following a route we made up using the map we were given. We then lost Dad and pulled over but ended up stumbling across a strange sculpture, so really Mum and I came out of the loss pretty well. It was fun and exhilarating cycling around Dorset, although my bottom and legs were aching by the end of it. Even after a lot of wrong turns and small pavements that we walked down with our bikes it was still a thoroughly enjoyable day and cycling up and down the seafront near Bowleaze was one of the highlights of the trip. Although this bears no relevance to this post you may be amused to read that we went cycling on the day of what I can only assume to be some sort of Dorset Marathon which brought the difficulty level up significantly when cycling down the lanes shared for both walking and biking. 

Hiring the bikes from Jurassic Trails cost £54 for the three of us and could be used for the whole day. We thought this was pretty good!

Windsurfing

On our third day I went windsurfing at the Official Test Centre in Portland.  My only vaguely similar experience in my life was going Water-skiing in Greece three and a half years ago so I entered a complete beginner but came out, quoting the words of my instructor, “a natural”. I got the hang of it practically straight away; there was a secure position, a sailing position and the act of turning around. Once you learn those – which we did on the shore – the only difficulty is keeping your balance and not falling in. The two hour session went by quickly and I would definitely try it again – possibly in windier conditions than the test centre. The water is so shallow and the one time I fell, my feet touched the floor so there is no reason to be scared. The centre also teaches paddle boarding which is an easier water sport that you could attempt if you wanted. 

Robert’s two-hour taster lesson was complimentary (lucky us!) but would have cost £49. The Official Test Centre is on Portland, just past Chesil Beach. Although they gifted us the session, they had no input into this blog post.

Castletown D-Day centre 

Earlier that day we visited the Castletown D-Day centre, an activity which my parents weren’t too scared to take part in. The museum was one of the best I’ve been to in a while, due to the fact that there were so many interactive things to do which seemed to be one of the things the owner had been really pushing for when building the centre. There were tanks and army vehicles you could climb in and move, videos to watch, boards to read as well as proper army uniform and an array of guns that you could wear and pick up. Upstairs was a surprisingly creepy enemy bunker focusing on the Germans and their experience of D-Day, and a tea-room where we coincidentally saw the museum’s owner who we had just been watching in the videos downstairs! The centre is only open between 10.30 – 3.30 but it was really fun and interesting, the staff really knew their stuff and it was a really nice place to go. We ended up spending a lot more time there than we had expected to.

The Castletown D Day Centre is situated in Portland, where thousands of American soldiers stayed before they left for France in 1944. It costs £7 for adults, £5 for 12-17 year olds and £4 for children. 

Natural Landscape 

Lulworth Cove

Throughout the holiday went to some beautiful places including Lulworth Cove – a stunning bay with about 100 places to get an ice-cream, Opa Church Cove, a small rocky area on Portland which was once used by smugglers, and the area around the Portland Bill Lighthouse – not to mention many other beautiful views and beaches that we visited. The most amazing place to see however was Durdle Door – a natural limestone arch in the sea.

Although quite a long walk from the car park it was a beautiful sight and the rocky beach preceding it was a great place to swim, relax and stare in awe. There were so many places of natural beauty in Dorset and they made the holiday feel much more relaxed than constantly visiting museums and man-made attractions. 

Jurassic Coast

The most unique activity we participated in throughout the trip was definitely our fossil tour on the Jurassic Coast. Our tour guide Martin, from Jurassic Coast Guides, explained how different fossils are formed and helped us remember what they look like and how to spot them. After the talk, which lasted about an hour, and a toilet break which gladly lasted less than an hour, we set off down the coastline to find some fossils. Martin had explained the places with the best chance of finding a fossil but even before we got to them he had found a few which he let us “find” and keep after giving us the general area it was in. This stayed the case for the majority of the two hours we spent on the beach. Although grouped together, Mum, Dad and I found three, maybe four traces of fossilised creatures to Martin’s 20 or so more impressive ones. The whole experience was really interesting and fun and we came home with a bag full of 14 190 million year old rocks. If you are considering going fossil hunting, on the Jurassic Coast or elsewhere I would definitely recommend doing it as part of a tour or with someone experienced and we would have had no clue whatsoever if we had gone on our own.

Dorset Adventure Park

Our hour at Dorset Adventure Park felt much longer – it was one of the most fun activities of the holiday and Mum and Dad really enjoyed it as well even though they were in the water for most of it!  Everything is inflatable and if you only fall off you have to swim to nearest entry point or attempt to climb back on where someone pulls you up by the lifejacket.

Sea life and adventure golf

We only spent an hour or so in Weymouth’s Sea Life as we saw all the different attractions and didn’t stick around at each for too long. However, for younger kids it looked like a great place to visit – there were at least five different schools visiting when we went. Our favourite bit was the “shipwreck” with lots of cool sea life to see inside: jellyfish, crabs and fish and we also liked seeing some otters being fed – one of the events that occur throughout the day. There were seals, sharks, turtles and penguins as well as lots more cool things to see for children to enjoy. We also visited the Pirate Adventure Golf just outside which was really fun. Beware though, we went in the morning around when it had just opened and it was extremely busy, meaning long waits to play the next hole. 

A Pirate Adventure Golf & Weymouth SEALIFE combi ticket (booked online) is Adult £24.95, Child (3-14) £20.95. We were lucky enough to be given these in order to write about them, but the organisation had no input into this blog post.

Overall I loved going to Dorset and is my favourite holiday in the UK in many years – if not my whole life. Coincidence that Jess didn’t come on this one! It was so nice not to go to a bustling city and just visit museums and theme parks – although I could’ve done with a few rides; instead there were beautiful coves and beaches and activities involving nature. On top of that there were so many delicious foods to sample, I’m pretty sure I had more ice-creams than days of the holiday! If you are thinking of going to a place in England I would wholeheartedly recommend Dorset as we spent a week there and there were still loads of things we didn’t do or visit. There are definitely enough things for adults, teenagers and children and I hope to go back again in the future.

Weekends Away in Beautiful Bournemouth

The largest resort in Dorset, Bournemouth was voted the UK’s best beach in the Travellers’ Choice award for the second year in a row. This seven-mile stretch of perfect coastline and Blue Flag beaches provide a wonderful setting for your weekend away in beautiful Bournemouth.

It has been branded “the coast with the most”. Water sports abound, or simply walk, run or cycle along the sandy beaches, through the beautifully maintained Victorian gardens or along the majestic clifftops. Looking for a fun-filled hen party weekend?  Before heading out for a night on the town, there are also plenty of opportunities to try surfing, paddle-boarding or jet skiing.

As a seaside getaway, you can’t ask for more. A magnificent cliff line guards the bay below.  Thanks to its own micro-climate, the area has some of the warmest sea temperatures in the UK. There are also numerous spots to enjoy the spectacular views across to the Isle of Wight and the Purbecks, so make sure you take your deckchairs along.

Beach Huts

Did you know that Bournemouth invented the modern beach hut 100 years ago and boasts the oldest beach huts in the country? The town was also the first place in the UK to have purpose-built beach huts.  The first beach hut, built in 1909, is marked with a Blue Plaque near the Bournemouth Seafront Office (to the east of Bournemouth Pier). If you do intend to spend the day at the beach, you can hire one of the 250 beach huts.  These are available for weekly, daily and period hire. What better way to spend the day relaxing with friends and family while appreciating the coastal views? There are beach huts available at Alum Chine, Durley Chine, Bournemouth, Boscombe, Southbourne and Fisherman’s Walk.  With plenty of choices they are available for hire from as little as £125 a week.

Bournemouth’s beautiful coastline offers loads of fun things to do all year round as it hosts over 500 fantastic events and festivals. August sees the annual Bournemouth Air Festival. The biggest event of its kind in the world – there are flying displays, evening entertainment, shopping and much more. And what’s even better is that it’s FREE. Also in August, there are free Friday night fireworks display on Bournemouth Pier. In October there’s the Arts By The Sea, with 10 days of events, installations and experiences for everyone to enjoy.

Festivals, Concerts and More

Whatever time of year you are planning your weekend in beautiful Bournemouth you will find events and festivals and concerts available.

The Shake and Stir Vintage Festival in June takes place in Southbourne. It has become renowned locally and across the South of England for its vintage-themed live entertainment and music. Along with local food & drink, trade stalls, vintage and classic cars, mods and rockers, and classic bikes.

The beautiful coastline lends itself to a range of outdoor activities, from swims and runs, including the Bournemouth Marathon Festival, to water sports and beach games. Bournemouth also welcomes some of the biggest dance shows and competitions to the town to its world-class performance venues. The international concert venues, museums and theatres put on a huge variety of events throughout the year. The Land Train

Getting around the town is made easy with the Land Train, which runs along the promenade and means you don’t have to worry about driving after that sneeky afternoon G&T. Farewell Faithful Friend

THE STORY STARTS IN 1981 when I was nearing the end of a four-year restoration of a 1923 Armstrong Whitworth 10R35 to concours standard, and the question was, what was I going to do next? I was keen to carry on and restore another engine, as my objective was to eventually be able to afford an 'old banger' of a traction engine, which would need rebuilding of course, but that was always my boyhood dream since I first stood on 1900 Aveling & Porter 4561 6hp road locomotive Jimmy at the age of two in 1954, at the last Chris Lambert steam event. The events at Chris' were always held on the last Saturday in June and included a parade of the engines from his extensive yard, around the village of Horsmonden, Kent. The yard is now an small exclusive housing development and called appropriately Lamberts Place. My thinking was the proceeds from a well restored steam roller and a portable just might give me sufficient funds to head me in the right direction for a traction engine. But I wasn't interested in purchasing a large portable, as they are hard to manoeuvre at the best of times and are generally hard work, not a one man engine at all. My objective was a small 2 or 3hp engine, which even then were very hard to find. I started the 'jungle drums' as in those days finding such things was virtually impossible. There were no imports for South America and the like, which have subsequently totally flooded the market unfortunately. Although some traction engines were coming back from Australia, some seemed to be doing so in shady circumstances at that time. However, I also wanted an engine that had a proper UK history, which can be traced and gives the engine more value than an overseas import, well to my mind it does anyway. In August of that year I happened to see the now late Bill Briggs at Astle Park, Cheshire while in the parade ring with Brian and Harry Allison's Aveling & Porter tractor Oberon. He told me that great northern Marshall 'guru' Jack Pierson had died and at Hetton-le-Hole, in Jack Wakefield's yard, stood one of Jack Pierson's engines. At one time he had several strewn across the north in various farms and yards, but all had been sold by his distant family who lived near Watford, except the little 1912 Marshall 3hp portable 59763. Bill added that the money being asked for it was much too high, but apparently it had a boiler certificate and he told me where I could find the phone number for Jack Wakefield, no mobiles in those days. I asked skilled engineer, the now late John Bailey from Borough Green, to come with me and one very early Saturday morning in October 1981 his wife Pat drove us to King Cross railway station where we caught the 125 train to Durham city station. Here we were picked up by Jack Wakefield in his cream coloured Triumph Toledo. Apparently the engine had major boiler work in various places and the cylinder block had been removed to weld the firebox crown. Many extended welding rods were used, there were many repair bills that amounted to nearly £1,000. However on inspection I was none to impressed, the firebox crown was collapsed at the front and the bridge bars were still loose on the crown. It had a boiler certificate for 40psi and the pressure gauge was stuck on 60psi! The engine was in a mess, but basically complete, but no lagging and the fittings were rough. On the boiler inspector's notes I spotted it said it had a slight leak from the cylinder block base.

- Peter Love stands in the middle, with Alan and Jack Thwaites the new owners of 1912 Marshall 59763. This was put down to the fact that it had a couple of straight Whitworth bolts holding it on instead of tapered or 'carrot bolts' as they are called, which it would have originally been fitted with. I didn't think much of it really, but it would become a challenge later on. Having returned home, I phoned the family who were selling the engine to tell them the bad news that the engine needed a new firebox and much more, which they didn't like hearing at all. I offered them £2,500 including the trailer, but unfortunately they were looking for £4,000 - £5,000 for it, or had been advised that was what it was worth. I was flatly turned down, but I pointed out that the engine had been on the market two years and there were no takers at that money. That did get them thinking and some three months later they offered me the engine again, at the price I had offered. It's journey to Kent was an interesting one as Roger Mortimore and his lowloader from Erith, Kent had to collect a compactor waste bin from Arnolds of East Peckham near Maidstone before we took it to Washington, County Durham where no less than two cranes from different companies fought out who was going to remove it, as business was thin on the ground in those parts at the time. We then travelled on, right by the wonderful Beamish Museum, on our way to Hetton-le-Hole. Loading the engine and trailer did not take long, although the shed roof had to be jacked up to get the engine out and not damage the cast chimney cap in the process. It was pulled out by the yard's Fordson Diesel Major fitted with a Ford Cortina radiator, but without the Fordson nose cone on, or the bonnet. The journey home included a stop at Scotch Corner for tea, where a number of drivers called this small load 'The Rocket' a name that stuck with the engine for a number of years. It was home and in my yard in the early hours of the next morning, having taken us 23 hours to complete the journey. I was to spend the next eight tumultuous years, in between work, totally rebuilding the engine. This included a new boiler, firebox, backhead, tubeplate, smokebox and so much more. I did end up with a 'banger' of a traction engine while working on 59763, which I was able to rally while rebuilding the portable. This was thanks to so many people giving up their free time for me, sadly most of them are now no longer with us. However, I last rallied the portable in 1994 at the Great Dorset SteamFair and since then it has sat, wellcovered and protected, in various of my sheds, being lubricated and turned over once every six months. I have other engines and various other projects littered everywhere and have a new one arriving, so I needed the room, but it took a lot to sell it. I wanted it to go to a good home and had a good few offers for it. The people I chose to be its new owners are Alan and Jack Thwaites of Warrington, and they collected it Saturday November 26. Hotel Review: La Fosse, Cranborne, Dorset, England

La Fosse, which is owned by Mark Hartstone and his French wife, Emmanuelle, is a quirky yet unpretentious guesthouse that combines traditional furnishings with contemporary design. What makes it a cut above your average village B&B is the small but excellent restaurant, offering a menu chock full of fresh, local produce.

Who for

La Fosse is equally suited to couples and families who want to spend a weekend enjoying the great outdoors. Bikes are available to rent from the B&B free of charge – it’s best to contact Mark and Emmanuelle in advance due to limited numbers. There is also a box of (waterproof) maps and Mark will happily recommend his favourite local walks to take you around the village and beyond.

The B&B also has a lovely garden with a 14-person BBQ hut, where you can enjoy a fantastic selection of meat and salads prepared by Mark himself, who is a fully trained Chef. The BBQ hut is ideal for a birthday party and can be enjoyed throughout the year, even in driving snow.

Accommodation

The six rooms at La Fosse are divided into four categories: Classic, Cosy, Spacious and the Suite. All rooms have generously sized double beds and en suite bathrooms.

We spent two nights in the charmingly named “Dorset Blue” Spacious room, tastefully decorated in blue and white. The room was bright and airy with large windows overlooking the village. The bed was very comfortable, although our sleep was slightly impeded by church bells that chimed hourly throughout the night.

The bathroom was small but well designed, with heated marble floors and a large bath & shower. I was impressed by the range of bath products supplied by the British company, Cowshed.

Facilities

La Fosse is a small family-run B&B so there’s not a lot in the way of spas and indoor gyms. However there is a cosy living room with comfy sofas and leather chairs. Some of the more unusual items include a hand drum that pays homage to Mark’s hobby as a percussionist.

The restaurant also opens out into a lounge area complete with a wood burner where you can enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail and have a go at solving one of the pesky wooden puzzles. It’s a cosy area that contains some fairly whacky furniture – the table is made from half of a wooden window shutter all the way from India.

There is no exclusive parking on site, but it’s fairly easy to find a parking spot nearby.

Food and drink

The restaurant at La Fosse has won numerous awards in the last two years, including “Best Restaurant” and “Best Food & Drink” at the Taste of Dorset Awards. Impressively, Mark curates the menu and cooks the food himself, with only the help of a pot washer and occasionally his wife, if it’s a full house.

The food includes rural delights such as Venison Carpaccio with chestnuts and cranberry relish. The starter of hot and cold smoked Romsey trout came with a sliver of cured whiskey salmon that had a fantastic bite to it. We also sampled the award winning cheese board which included an excellent gouda with nettle, horseradish and garlic.

The restaurant is fully licensed and also doubles as the breakfast room, where you can enjoy a selection of hot and cold dishes including a Full English and Eggs Benedict.

Is WiFi available

Yes, WiFi is available free of charge, although its not the most reliable. There is no mobile signal in Cranborne, so use this as an opportunity to escape from the grips of technology.

Room rates

Rooms start at a very reasonable £89 per night and the suite is available for £165 per night (based on two sharing). You won’t get these kind of prices in London!

A three-course dinner at the restaurant is £29.50 with a £4.50 supplement for the cheese board.

What’s nearby

Cranborne, with its traditional rural houses and friendly local pubs, is a delightful place to spend a weekend, with plenty of things to see and do in the local area.

As well as the multitude of local walks, there’s the Sixpenny brewery, which has its own pub serving a selection of local ales. If you’re part of a group, they might even take you on a tour through the brewery.

The old walled gardens of the manor have been converted into a licensed garden centre that serves a fantastic selection of cream teas and cakes. There are also two pubs in the village, and the Sheaf of Arrows was buzzing with activity when we went there on a Saturday night.

Getting there

Like most of Dorset, transport links to Cranborne are fairly dire. There are a couple of buses a week and it takes about 30 minutes to drive from the major train stations (Poole, Bournemouth, Salisbury).

The best way to reach Cranborne is by car, and it takes about two hours to drive there from London.

London eateries with bird's-eye views

We take the measure of the best -- and most thrilling -- "uppity" eateries in London when you travel here: Helix and Iris Helix Restaurant and Iris Bar, on levels 39 and 40 of the Norman Foster-designed Gherkin building -- a much-loved star of the London skyline -- open to the public for the first time on July 13, having previously only been available for exclusive hire and private events. Helix's executive chef Daniel Loftin is behind a menu featuring seasonal British produce such as Dorset crab, Rhug Estate Welsh lamb and English green asparagus. Iris Bar, which offers spectacular 360-degree views over the City, will unveil a new London-inspired cocktail list, including the Jack the Ripper -- with Mediterranean herbs vodka, beet juice, tomato, lemon and Worcester sauce -- a dark local twist on the Bloody Mary. Oblix at the Shard The Shard is home to several fancy eateries, but Oblix is the original and the most elevated, situated on the 32nd floor of the glass skyscraper. Oblix has a New York-inspired rotisserie theme -- a departure for founder Rainer Becker, whose other restaurants, Zuma, Roka and the newly opened Inko Nito, are Japanese-themed. Duck and Waffle's signature dish will cost you £16 ($21) from the breakfast menu, but two eggs any style comes in at £8 ($10.50) -- comparable to many less glamorous brunch spots in the capital.
