HRD Vincent Rapide Motorcycle

The Vincent Rapide is a line of standard motorcycles designed and built by the Vincent HRD motorcycle company at their works in Great North Road, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England. The model debuted in 1936 and was built until 1939. Production resumed in 1946 and ended in 1955. Four major versions were built, labelled Series A through to D, though the Series D designation was never offically used by the factory.

Whilst working in his office at Stevenage in 1936, designer Phil Irving noticed two drawings of the Vincent HRD engine laying on top of each otherin a "V" formation. Irving realised that the 23.5" rearward set of the engine's idler would allow a 1-litre 47" V-twin engine to be built using the same cylinders, heads and valve gear as the Vincent single. The new crankcase could even be built on the existing jigs. When company owner Phil Vincent saw the drawing he was immediately enthusiastic, and a few weeks later the first Vincent thousand had been made, with Meteor upper engine parts mounted on a new crankcase. This first Vincent V-twin engine was installed in a frame originally built for a record attempt by Eric Fernihough.

I arrived at my Dorset farm farm just after 9pm this evening. Farmer Frank's wife, Peggy had a lovely beef casserole ready for me on arrival. Frank and I then went for a chat (and a little drink) at the nearby Brace of Pheasants. Members of my family from both Sussex and Shropshire will be staying at this delightful pub/restaurant tomorrow evening after attending my Last Night of the Proms/Harvest Moon party at the farm on Saturday.

Südengland 2024 - Tag 11

Ladies und Gentlemen!

Hier ist er auch schon: Der letzte Tag unserer Reise auf die Isle of Wight.

Leider müssen wir heute die schöne Isle of Wight wieder verlassen. Auch dieses Mal hat uns die Isle of Wight total begeistert.

Nach dem Frühstück folgt das übliche Ritual packen, Kühlschrank ausräumen, Auto einräumen und los geht es, quer über die Insel, zum Fährhafen von Yarmouth.

In Yarmouth haben wir die Mittagsfähre, rüber nach Lymington, gebucht. Von hier verkehren mehrmals täglich drei Fähren, die zum Lymington Pier, an der östlichen Seite des Hafen, fährt.

Die Isle of Wight, die einfach nur als “die Insel” bezeichnet wird, ist von Lymington aus mit der Fähre in 40 Minuten zu erreichen - und umgekehrt.

Mit gerade einmal 885 Einwohnern ist Yarmouth der kleinste Ort Englands, der sich Town nennen darf. Dieses Recht wurde dem Örtchen 1135 verliehen.

Eine wirkliche glückliche Geschichte hat dieser Ort nicht zu bieten: Wegen seiner Lage als “Hüter” der Isle of Wight wurde er immer wieder von den Franzosen überfallen und niedergebrannt.

Dennoch sind viele historische Häuser erhalten geblieben und werden liebevoll gepflegt, was zu dem besonderen Flair des Örtchens beiträgt.

Heute ist in Yarmouth jede Menge los, die Sommersaison hat begonnen. Im Hafenbereich tanzt und spielt eine Folkloregruppe, misstrauisch beäugt von den Zeugen Jehovas, die dem Spektakel eher kritisch gegenüber stehen bzw. sitzen.

Die Wightlink Fähren auf der Strecke Yarmouth-Lymington sind doch deutlich kleiner, als die auf der Strecke zwischen der Fishbourne nach Portmouth.

Nachdem die Autos auf dem Autodeck geparkt wurden, müssen alle Passagiere ihre Fahrzeuge verlassen. Leider schalten nicht alle Fahrzeugbesitzer ihre Alarmanlage aus und so jault und hupt es fröhlich, während der gesamten Überfahrt, aus dem Parkdeck.

Mit dem Aufzug geht es hoch auf die Passagierdecks, die mit Restaurant, Panoramafenstern und Aussichtsplattform ausgestattet sind. Bei diesem Traumwetter stürmen natürlich alle auf das Sonnendeck.

Das andere Ufer kommt schnell in Reichweite und bei der Einfahrt in den Hafen begeben sich alle wieder nach unten, zu ihren Autos. Die Ausfahrt erfolgt in umgekehrter Reihenfolge zur Einfahrt.

Für uns geht es nun wieder, wie im letzten Jahr, einmal quer durch den New Forrest National Park. Allerdings halten wir uns heute nirgendwo auf, denn wir werden auf dem Rückweg hier noch ein paar Tage ein Quartier beziehen und von dort aus die Gegend intensiver erkunden.

Unser heutiges Zwischeziel ist das Langham Wine Estate in der Grafschaft Dorset. Hier haben wir für 14.30 Uhr online einen Tisch reserviert.

Das Weingut von Langham ist in einer hübschen alten Scheune untergebracht, nur wenige Meter vom Weinberg entfernt. Alter Heckenbestand bietet natürlichen Windschutz und Lebensraum für eine Vielzahl nützlicher Organismen.

Der Weinberg von Langham wurde ursprünglich von Senior John Langham in sehr kleinem Rahmen angelegt. Im Jahr 2009 beschloss Johns Sohn, Justin Langham, den einfachen Weinberg seines Vaters in ein kommerzielles Unternehmen umzuwandeln, und bepflanzte auf seiner Crawthorne-Farm 30 Hektar Land mit Trauben.

Langham ist der größte Einzelweinberg im Südwesten Englands. Alle 30 Hektar sind mit den klassischen Rebsorten der Champagne bepflanzt: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir und Pinot Meunier. 

Der Wein wird direkt im Weingut vor Ort hergestellt und nicht irgendwo in einer Genossenschaft oder einem der Big Player weiter verarbeitet. Langhams Winzer Tommy ist mit seinem gerade einmal 25 Jahren Englands jüngster Winzer und gilt weithin als aufstrebender Stern in der Weinbranche.

Ein Hauptgrund für den Standort ist der Kreideboden – Dorset und die umliegenden Grafschaften werden von Kreide- und einigen Kalksteinböden dominiert, wodurch die Region in der Lage ist, hochwertige Trauben für Schaumwein zu produzieren (ähnlich wie in der berühmten Gegend der Champagne in Frankreich).

Langham stellt Weine nur nach der traditionellen Methode her (wie beim Champagner), mit einer zweiten Gärung in der Flasche, um den Schaum zu erzeugen. Anschließend reift jede Flasche mindestens 18 Monate lang auf Hefe, bevor sie degorgiert und unter Korken weiter gereift wird. 

Es sind unterschiedliche Touren, ab 15 £ pro Person, buchbar. Picknicks kosten 19,50 £ pro Person. Dazu gibt es eine große Lunch Karte und für den kleinen Hunger eine kleine Tapas Karte.

Eine restaurierte Scheune bietet einen rustikalen, aber praktischen Verkostungsraum. An einem Ende befindet sich eine Bar, an der man direkt von der Kellertür aus probieren und kaufen kann. 

Auf der anderen Seite befindet sich ein Café mit leckeren, lokalen Produkten. Dies macht es für uns zum perfekten Zwischenstopp, um vorbeizuschauen, etwas zu essen und zu probieren.

Der Service ist super flott, trotz der gut gefüllten Tische. Bei dem schönen Wetter nutzen die Leute den Tag anscheinend zu einem Weingutbesuch.

Der Fahrer musste sich allerdings zurück halten, denn wir müssen noch eine 3/4 Stunde bis zu unserem endgültigen Ziel, der Wayland Farm fahren.

Die Farm liegt abseits in einem Tal und ist eine echte "Working Farm" mit genau einer Gästeunterkunft. Unsere Nachbarn sind Rinder und Esel.

Hardy’s Casterbridge is still like an alternative world… a bit like Ambridge

IN OUR series, household names revisit their favourite childhood holiday destinations. This week, Archers star ANDREW WINCOTT returns to Hardy country.

HISTORIC Dorchester has long been just a memory for me.

I first visited it in my teens while studying Thomas Hardy’s The Mayor Of Casterbridge for my A-levels. And one of my first professional roles as an actor in the 1980s was as Alec in Hardy’s Tess Of The D’Urbervilles, for a West Country tour that took in Dorchester’s Corn Exchange, still a vibrant arts centre today.

Now, decades later, I got the chance to return to Dorset’s sedate county town with Spi, an old university friend and fellow Hardy fan from my Oxford days.

After checking into the welcoming Duchess Of Cornwall Inn, we hit the Hardy trail. Our first step was Maumbury Rings, the atmospheric former Neolithic/ Roman amphitheatre – the scene of a clandestine meeting in The Mayor Of Casterbridge between Henchard and the wife he’d sold 20 years earlier.

Thankfully it’s no longer used for public executions (even the most genteel towns can have a dark past). Just down the high street stands the landmark King’s Arms Hotel. Hardy wrote The Mayor Of Casterbridge at a desk in the bay window of the Casterbridge Room there – and standing in the great man’s footsteps, I couldn’t help feeling a moment of frisson.

Our next stop was Max Gate, the Grade I listed house that Hardy designed following his early literary success and where he lived until his death in 1928. It’s also where Hardy wrote Tess Of The D’Urbervilles, perhaps his most famous novel. Among the many celebrity visitors who called on him there was Lawrence of Arabia.

The town’s Dorset Museum also boasts a Hardy connection – the great man’s study has been reconstructed there, and you can even admire some of his paintings.

But Dorchester isn’t just for Hardy fans.

In recent years the town has become a bit of a gastro-hub for foodies – the Food And Arts Festival takes place in August – as I discovered.

I lunched on a delicious pesto porchetta at the Merchant restaurant, and my steak dinner at The King’s Arms was cooked to perfection. I can also recommend Drgnfly, which specialises in pan-Asian fare – its sesame crusted tuna and crispy prawn dumplings served with garlic and chilli sauce certainly hit the spot.

So how did Dorchester compare to the town of my youth?

Hardy’s Casterbridge is still as vivid to me now as when I first walked its streets. An alternative world perhaps – a bit like Borsetshire’s Ambridge – but one well worth visiting whether or not you’re a Hardy fan.

In the words of Daniel Defoe, which you can see above the entrance to the town’s Corn Exchange: ‘A man might as well... spend his time... in Dorchester as in any other town in England.’

How did all the Bridgerton ex partners all deal with their respective break up?

They dealt with it in a healthy way.

Genevieve and Eloise have been her main support trough all this. And she couldn't ask for better support system

Phillip decided to give his full attention to renovating his greenhouse and homeschooling Oliver and Amanda. It helps him cope with Eloise leaving. If he just keeps his mind on his kids and his house. But he's like a sad puppy who listens to angry von Jovi. Oliver and Amanda can't take him seriously when he's being so dramatic broody and they are getting tired of the excessive paternal smothering

Michael deals with his breakup by traveling like crazy, he at least knows he'll eventually have to stop running away from his horny guilt and Grovel at Francesca's feet. But he's not there yet. Funny thing about Michael is that Francesca also did not breakup with his mom. So he also gets well meaning updates on her life from his own mom, not just Violet.

After his breakup with Hy,Gareth actually has made time to visit the on campus student therapist who suggested he joined the university basketball team and the College mentors for kids club. So Between talking to the therapist, making sure he remains at the top of the class, mentoring underprivileged kids and training for games. Gareth is actually growing out of his pain and coping in a healthy way

Lucy just coped by leaning a lot on Ricky Haselby, her gay best friend. And Haselby is the kind of guy who has lots of money and solves problems with daddy's influence. So his solution everytime Lucy starts mopping and missing Gregory is to let her cry and buy her stuff on Amazon. Still, as someone who has been ignored by her family all her life, Lucy feels oddly comforted by how hard Haselby tries to be there for her. "Established in 1959, West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative has enjoyed an international reputation for the exquisite prints, drawings and carvings created by its Inuit artist members. In addition to operation of the Kinngait Studios at the Kenojuak Cultural Centre in Kinngait, the cooperative maintains a Toronto marketing division office, Dorset Fine Arts, which is responsible for interfacing with galleries, museums, cultural professionals, Inuit art enthusiasts and the art market globally. The role of West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative has significantly expanded to include communications, promotion, advocacy, government relations and special projects as related to the Inuit art of Kinngait. Governed by an all-Inuit Board of Directors, the organization also maintains a local retail grocery/hardware store, a restaurant, rental properties and various utility contracts. first week of work done !! i like my coworkers a LOT actually there’s some v cool people but i’m so shy ! will befriend them eventually :•) ummm been a good week outside of work too, jam’s friend from school just moved to bristol literally down the road (“half a cigarette’s walk”) on tuesday so we’ve been hanging out with him ! had a margarita/cocktail night because he moved in decked out with cocktail ingredients and nothing else. jam’s office is on the walk home from mine so we’ve been walking home together which is lovely. wednesday we went in tesco to look at the reduced stuff and got a cheap caterpillar cake AND crumpets !! yesterday we went for dinner in town at this little korean place which does the best cauliflower wings i’ve ever had ! and we got some banchan and green edamame spring rolls and homemade lemonades too :•) then johnnie was in town so we sat in castle park for a lil bit then went to an arcade bar and played a lot of asteroids which was fun ! and walked home . and rose had a shift at the restaurant today til 5 so we met after work at one of our fav pubs (only cider, on a boat) and had a half and phin called us for a couple minutes bc he’s away on a cycle trip ! and then we went home and made pasta all together with the ORANGEst eggs i have ever seen and it was v yummy :•) party tomorrow !! harry is coming up from dorset !
