Have we... have we talked about Watson's habit of throwing writing he doesn't like across the room?
We had the bit with the list of Things Sherlock Sucks At in A Study in Scarlet:
When I had got so far in my list I threw it into the fire in despair.
And NOW we've got this delightful bit in The Resident Patient:
Finding that Holmes was too absorbed for conversation, I had tossed aside the barren paper
And i DISTINCTLY REMEMBER finding something similar with a yellow-backed novel when I was reading the Adventures collection. Took me three minutes to find it again, in The Boscombe Valley Mystery:
The puny plot of the story was so thin, however, when compared to the deep mystery through which we were groping, and I found my attention wander so continually from the action to the fact, that I at last flung it across the room
LIKE. I'm sorry to me this is one of Watson's defining traits now. I can't stop laughing.
Watson: Yeah I love Sherlock but I swear he can be incredibly dramatic at times 🙄
Also Watson:

so you want to read Sherlock Holmes?
the canon of Sherlock Holmes as published by Arthur Conan Doyle consists of 56 short stories and 4 novels. that’s a lot. I think most of the issues people run into with reading Sherlock Holmes can be broken down into three questions:
what order do I read them in?
where do I find them?
are there other ways to experience them?
I’m going to tackle these one at a time and I’m adding a cut to save your dash. be forewarned.
1- what order do I read the stories in?
there isn’t really one good answer to this. the stories themselves were not published in chronological order, and Conan Doyle himself was notoriously inconsistent with dates. the adventure of the red-headed league is a particularly good example of this (the month inexplicably changes from June to October in the space of a page).
there exist several timelines made by Holmes scholars over the years, of which William Baring-Gould’s is probably the most well-known. you can find it here. (this website, the Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia, is also a great resource for learning more about Sherlock Holmes stories and their many adaptations.)
(Baring-Gould’s chronology gives Watson multiple marriages; only one wife is ever mentioned by name in the stories, but it is difficult to make a coherent timeline where Watson is only married once.)
another method is to read the stories in publication order. this is the easiest way, since the short stories were published in 5 collections after being printed in the Strand Magazine. these collections are:
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, containing stories published from June 1891 to June 1892.
The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, containing stories published from December 1892 to December 1893.
The Return of Sherlock Holmes, October 1903 to December 1904
His Last Bow, 1908 to 1917
The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, 1921 to 1927
including the 4 novels, publication order would be:
A Study In Scarlet
The Sign of Four
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes
The Hound of the Baskervilles
The Return of Sherlock Holmes
His Last Bow
The Valley of Fear
The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes
a third way, and probably the most popular, is just to skip around and read whichever stories catch your interest. given the lack of an official chronology and varying levels of popularity of the stories (the hound of the baskervilles is quite well-known, but have you ever heard of the valley of fear? probably not) which can affect how easy it is to find them, this approach might be the most practical.
I’m also going to be totally honest: you do not need to read all 60 Sherlock Holmes works unless you want to. the stories vary quite a bit in quality, and Conan Doyle is a much better short story writer than novelist. to that end, here’s my recommended twenty stories and the year they were written. the order listed corresponds to the chronology I made myself, but it’s only a suggestion, unless otherwise noted.
A Study in Scarlet (1887) note: if you are going to read this, it makes most sense to read it first, since it deals with how Holmes and Watson first met.
The Adventure of the Gloria Scott (1893)
The Adventure of the Resident Patient (1893)
The Adventure of the Speckled Band (1892)
The Adventure of Silver Blaze (1892)
The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter (1893)
The Sign of Four (1890)
A Scandal in Bohemia (1891)
The Boscombe Valley Mystery (1891)
The Adventure of the Red-Headed League (1891)
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle (1892)
The Adventure of the Copper Beeches (1892)
The Final Problem (1893)
The Adventure of the Empty House (1903) note: read this right after the final problem, otherwise it won’t make much sense
The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901)
The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton (1904)
The Adventure of the Abbey Grange (1904)
The Adventure of the Dancing Men (1903)
The Adventure of the Illustrious Client (1924)
The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place (1927)
2- where can I find the stories?
as of last year, all of Conan Doyle’s Holmes stories are in the public domain, which makes finding copies of them online much easier. I really love Project Gutenberg, which is an archive of over 70,000 ebooks, including all of the Sherlock Holmes stories! you can download pdfs from that website, or just read them online. the Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia, linked in the previous section, also has the text for all of the stories.
honestly, because it’s all public domain now, just searching “[story] pdf” should get you a lot of good results. if you don’t want to read them online, the Holmes stories are obviously quite well-known, and asking for a novel or short story collection at your library is a good bet. your library might have audiobooks or ebooks of these stories too.
as for translations, Sherlockian.net (another great website) has links to translations in Esperanto, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. Project Gutenberg has Polish, Dutch, and Finnish versions of some of the stories, though the selection is quite limited. these are all the links I have at the moment, but the stories have been translated into over 70 languages, so I’d be happy to look for more if anyone asks.
3- are there other ways to experience these stories?
yes! this youtube channel, The Sherlock Holmes Radio Show, has audiobooks for most of the books, the BBC’s radio drama adaptations of the stories, and the radio show adaptation done by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. if you prefer your stories in audio format, I highly recommend looking through their videos.
one of the most beloved screen adaptations of Sherlock Holmes is the Granada Studios tv series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. often referred to as “Granada Holmes”, the series starred Jeremy Brett as Holmes, and David Burke (seasons 1-2) and Edward Hardwicke (seasons 3-4) as Watson. it ran from 1984 to 1994, and was renowned for its commitment to accuracy.
the earlier episodes especially are about as close to one-to-one text to screen adaptations as it’s possible to get. they didn’t adapt every story, and they made some changes (they do not adhere to any established chronology, and Watson never marries), but if you don’t have time to read a whole story, chances are there’s a forty-five minute Granada episode you can watch instead. you can find a youtube playlist of all the episodes here.
finally, I wanted to mention a podcast called However Improbable (link goes to their website). every other week, they air an episode reading one of the stories out loud, and then an episode discussing it. they use Baring-Gould’s chronology, and the podcast is enjoyable both as a new and a long-time Holmes fan. I also like the flexibility that their format offers. if you only want to listen to the stories, you can do that! if you want to read the story on your own and then just listen to the analysis, you can do that!
it is an ongoing podcast, and as of posting this, they’re up to the adventure of the naval treaty.
and that’s all I have for now! thanks for reading this, and good luck in whatever you decide to do with this information. if you have more questions, I would love to answer them. I’m always down to talk about Holmes.
also, please let me know if any of this information is wrong or if any of the links are broken.

Trifles
Tumblr media
Sherlock Holmes has no time for trifles, so he says (Study in Scarlet). He also says that nothing is as important (Boscombe Valley Mystery). Clearly trifles warrant serious observation.
I've been writing some trifles this month, ficlets and 221Bs, using the prompts sent daily by @notjustamumj. They are collected HERE if you want to read them all, in a prompt collection called Trifles Two.
Trifles Two: Prompts: microfics, drabbles, flash fiction, 221Bs.
Thanks for reading! Your comments always make my day 🌞

Afternoon Trip to Boscombe
19.10.23
I slept in late oops so I went to boscombe in the afternoon. Visited the arcade and took some Primary Source photos - I'm going back this Saturday to take better ones.
I bought a sketchbook to start keeping a diary for everytime I visit Boscombe for this project. Today we sat in The Well cafe and sketched for a little bit. This independent cafe was so warming and the people were so friendly.

The artists were lovely and we had a great chat about artists and the community - and the "rat race" of the art world.

Pin-Up Feedback
Tumblr media
The feedback I got for my project was that the branding itself was effective and well received. The system I have set in place so far is strong and has the ability to be applied to the rest of the products produced under the brand.
What I can do next is procure more research into children’s education from educators themselves, and from parents of children the target audience’s age, as to their thoughts of my idea and it’s effectiveness. I also want to research into the company ‘Grounded’, based in Boscombe, who have a collective where they go out and forage together, and they also do children’s play workshops.

Valentine’s day isn’t a big thing for me, but I thought I may as well start collecting quotes of Sherlock asking John to be on cases with him or asking him if he has his revolver because there are loads.
(Also this isn’t all of them so I will add to it. Other people can add to it as well.)
A Study in Scarlet: “Get your hat,” he said. “You wish me to come?” “Yes, if you have nothing better to do.”
The Sign of the Four: “Don’t go, doctor, I should prefer that you remain.”
“Have you a pistol, Watson?” “I have my old service-revolver in my desk.” “You had best take it, then.”
“Miss Morstan has done me the honor to accept me as a husband in prospective.” He gave a most dismal groan. “I feared as much,” said he.
A Scandal in Bohemia: “I think that I had better go, Holmes.” “Not a bit, Doctor. Stay where you are. I am lost without my Boswell. And this promises to be interesting. It would be a pity to miss it.” “But your client—” “Never mind him. I may want your help, and so may he.
I rose to go, but Holmes caught me by the wrist and pushed me back into my chair. “It is both, or none,” said he. “You may say before this gentleman anything which you may say to me.”
“By the way, Doctor, I shall want your co-operation.” “I shall be delighted.” “You don’t mind breaking the law?” “Not in the least.” “Nor running a chance of arrest?” “Not in a good cause.” “Oh, the cause is excellent!” “Then I am your man.” “I was sure that I might rely on you.”
The Red-Headed League: “You could not possibly have come at a better time, my dear Watson,” he said cordially. “I was afraid that you were engaged.” “So I am. Very much so.” “Then I can wait in the next room.” “Not at all. This gentleman, Mr. Wilson, has been my partner and helper in many of my most successful cases, and I have no doubt that he will be of the utmost use to me in yours also.”
“Kindly put your army revolver in your pocket,”
The Boscombe Valley Mystery: We were seated at breakfast one morning, my wife and I, when the maid brought in a telegram. It was from Sherlock Holmes and ran in this way: “Have you a couple of days to spare? Have just been wired for from the west of England in connection with Boscombe Valley tragedy. Shall be glad if you will come with me. Air and scenery perfect. Leave Paddington by the 11.15.”
The Man with the Twisted Lip: “Now Watson, said Holmes..., “you’ll come with me, won’t you?” “If I can be of use.” “Oh, a trusty comrade is always of use; and a chronicler still more so.”
The Speckled Band: “I would be very much obliged if you would slip your revolver into your pocket.”
The Noble Bachelor: “Do not dream of going, Watson, for I very much prefer having a witness, if only as a check to my own memory.”
The Beryl Coronet: My friend insisted on my accompanying them.
The Copper Breeches: “Will you come with me?” asked Holmes, glancing up. “I should wish to.”
“I think Watson, that it would be as well for you to have your pistol ready.”
Silver Blaze: “I should be most happy as to go down with you if I should not be in the way,” said I. “My dear Watson, you would confer a great favour upon me by coming.
This is a very incomplete list, but I love how it gradually fades from Sherlock telling Watson to come with him to politely asking him to complimenting him about his presence to Watson asking if he could come.

An AU where Luke was telling the truth about why he left and actually kept in touch with you.
Tumblr media
Pair: Luke/MC Rating: G Word count: 1310 Synopsis: As much as you wanted to believe that nothing was going to change, it was inevitable. There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact.
Also on AO3.
It was perhaps late spring or early summer. You could remember how your nose was mildly itchy from the pollen as you found him sitting by the windowsill yet again. The breeze had felt warm, and the trees outside were rustling. It was supposed to be just like any other day until you heard the news that Luke will be moving away. In a week, nonetheless. It was surprising, but it wasn't entirely unexpected. Luke has always been a genius. You often teased him for being a nerd (affectionately, of course, to which he'd respond with a pout, and, oh, of course, you just had to pinch his cheek). Why wouldn't the National Central University, the country's top university, want him?
Promises were made. You're free to read Luke's Sherlock Holmes collection that he left at his parents' house. You'd call. You'd keep each other updated, about your lives, about your reading progress on his books, about all the food the capital has to offer. His moving away isn't going to change anything. You'd take good care of yourselves, even without having the other around, even without Luke chasing off any geese who would harass you, even without you apologizing to the grumpy neighborhood grandpa for the ruckus Luke had made. You two were going to be just fine. Right?
As much as you wanted to believe that nothing was going to change, it was inevitable. There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact. You know that. You sighed and closed Luke's copy of The Boscombe Valley Mystery. Ever since the age of five, Luke's presence has always been a constant in your life. Now you're left anxiously waiting for him to call.
Luke had told you earlier this morning that he'd be rather busy today, what with all the classes he got, and he's not even done with settling in. Despite his tight schedule, he still managed to take the time to text you several times throughout the day. Luke sent a picture of the egg sandwich he had for lunch. Apparently, he was in a rush in between classes, and the meal from the convenience store was all he could manage. He then complained about how it wasn't enough for him, how he regretted not getting more.
He promised he'd call once he's done with one of his assignments. You weren't expecting it to take this long. It was past 10 already. You had finished your homework hours ago, and that's why you're left in the state you are now. Laying in bed, The Boscombe Valley Mystery still sitting on your chest because you couldn't be bothered to get up and put it away. Is college that much harder? Luke must have been exhausted by now. Not wanting to keep him up just so that you could talk to him, you decided to text him to wish him luck on his work and that you two can just call some other time when he's less busy. You considered adding a cute sticker of a bunny with pom-poms but decided against it. You're a high school student now. Using stickers seems kind of childish and silly, doesn't it?
You finally got up, put the book away, and went to the bathroom to wash up before bed. By the time you came back, you notice your phone screen lighting up, informing you of a missed call from Luke. You hurriedly dialled him back. Within two rings, you finally heard his voice.
"Hey." There wasn't much energy to his voice. "Did I keep my Watson waiting?"
As odd as it may be, despite you never going anywhere and staying in Stellis, hearing Luke's voice made you feel like you're finally home once again.
"You're busy, Luke. I understand. You could have gone to bed right away, you know?" It really wasn't a big deal. Sure, you missed him, but you'd rather have Luke be well-rested.
"Oh, uh, well," you could hear a nervous chuckle from the other end of the line. "I'm not done with work yet, actually. It's much harder than I had anticipated." A pause. "I just wanted to make sure I could hear how your day was before you go to bed," his voice softened.
You let out a long sigh. Luke putting yourself over his own wellbeing. That's one thing that hasn't changed, huh? You couldn't admit that you thought that he was being very sweet and that you're honestly happy about it. You can't enable this behavior of his, can you? He seriously needs to put himself first.
"Okay, we'll make this quick then. You really need to take better care of yourself, Luke. Make sure you get enough rest."
"Alright, alright, I get it."
This is how it's always been. You two worrying and nagging each other, to the point that it may seem overbearing.
"So, the braised pork granny made for lunch, we still got plenty of leftovers left, so we also had that for dinner." You could hear Luke groaning in jealousy. Granny's braised pork was great. "I also read a bit of The Boscombe Valley Mystery."
"Oh! How are you liking it so far?" Luke clearly perked up at that.
"I haven't gotten very far yet, but I'm curious to see how they're going to prove James' innocence. All the evidence seems to be pointing at him right now."
A hearty laugh. Oh, how you love the sound of it. "You'll soon see, my dear Watson."
It's Luke's voice. It's clear it's Luke's voice. You'd recognize his voice anywhere. It's just, it doesn't sound the same over phone calls. Obviously, there's the slight noise, it's not a bother, but you do miss how clear his voice sounds in person. There's also the fact that his voice doesn't sound as deep, but that's fine, this is fine, it can't be helped. You're just glad you could still hear his voice to begin with. You're glad he'd make time for you instead of making you feel like you're left behind.
"How about you, Luke?" you asked. "What are you working on?"
"Oh, it's just some stuff on engineering chemistry. I also had to review some stuff for my engineering physics class tomorrow."
Science has never been your best subject, so when Luke explained further all the things he had to do, you were honestly feeling a bit lost. You loved hearing him talk about it so giddily, though. It reminds you of all the times when you'd have a nightmare disrupt your sleep and Luke would come over to your room and tell you the lamest science facts to distract you and get you back to sleep.
Luke seems to have noticed your quieter yeahs and mms to his stories. "Hey, you should sleep." You couldn't see it, but you got his gentle smile perfectly imprinted in your mind. That's probably how he looks right now.
"Sure, but," normally you'd be too embarrassed to ask for something like this. But you're too sleepy and you can't think straight so you went ahead with it, "Is it okay if we stay on the phone like this?"
It took a while for Luke to respond, but he finally said, "What do you mean?" as if in disbelief of what you're asking of him. That's fair. It is a ridiculous request, after all. It almost makes you want to take back what you just said. Almost. It must be all the K-drama you've been watching.
"You can get back to work, and I can go sleep, we just leave the call on."
"Alright," Luke said. "We can do that."
As you settled in bed, you could hear him tenderly say, "Good night, my dearest Watson."
This is nice too, you thought. Things aren't the same, but you two are going to be just fine.
