Top 20 - Discos del 2014

Esta es una de mis etapas favoritas del año musicalmente hablando, porque es cuando retomo la mejor música del año para redescubrir lo mejor del presente, así como aprovechar para escuchar algunos a los cuales no les pude prestar atención a su momento de salir. El año pasado, debido a los excesos de trabajo, compras navideña, posadas, etc. no tuve chance de postear mi top de discos del año, por lo cual aprovecho la víspera del fin de 2015, para publicar como previo, este top 20 de albumes de 2014, en el cual encontrarán los 20 discos que me acompañaron durante ese año, pero que aún me siguen proporcionando momentos agradables. Sin mayor preámbulo, vamos a comenzar esta lista:

20. Beck - Morning Phase

El retorno de Beck a los ambientes acústicos le sento demasiado bien, tanto que hasta se ganó el grammy al álbum del año.

Highlight: Blue Moon

19. The War On Drugs - Lost In The Dream

Los discos de canciones largas no necesariamente son aburridos. Los discos de heartland rock no necesariamente son aburridos. Combinar ambos y resultar en un disco genial, los hace unos maestrazos.

Highlight: Under The Pressure

18. Royal Blood - Royal Blood

Los británicos no dejaron de hablar de este grupo durante el 2014. Fue uno de los mejores actos en festivales, y aún no entiendo como no los trajeron al Corona Capital. El disco no tiene desperdicio y acercan el stoner rock a las masas.

Highlight: Figure it out

17. Swans - To Be Kind

Dos discos que te volarán los sesos. Swans es una de las bandas que aún tienen capacidad para crear álbumes matones, después de haber creado varios de ellos en su pasado.

Highlight: Bring the sun

16. Pink Floyd - The Endless River

A muchos no les gustó “The Endless River”, ya que pareciera una colección de lados B editados para sonar forzosamente a un álbum. La verdad es que el disco tiene momentos rescatables, que suenan mejor a los discos de solistas de los ex-miembros de Pink Floyd. Una escucha obligada para cualquier “rockero”.

Highlight: Louder than words

15. Julie Byrne - Rooms With Walls And Windows

El disco perfecto para escuchar una tarde lluviosa sin salir de casa, literal encerrado en tu cuarto. Folk femenino de calidad, sonando a una Cat Power austera, como en sus inicios.

Highlight:  Attached to Us Like Butcher Wrap

14. D’Angelo And The Vanguard - Black Messiah

El espectacular regreso de D’Angelo es una obra maestra del R&B , la cual nos demuestra que el no necesita sacar discos cada año para mantener vigente su nombre en la industria. De hecho, Black Messiah fue su primer álbum en 14 años.

Highlight: Sugah Daddy

13. Damon Albarn - Everyday Robots

Damon Albarn hace música cada año, y todos sus proyectos tienen un sonido totalmente distinto entre ellos. En este su primer álbum de solista en forma, se inspiró en el trip hop principalmente, adoptando otros ritmos estilo world music y folk que le permitieron crear un disco ampliamente variado y que además me dió la oportunidad de verlo por primera vez en vivo.

Highlight: Heavy Seas of Love

2. Taylor Swift - 1989

Sin dudarlo este fue el disco pop más sonado del 2014, y sin duda uno de los éxitos poperos más importantes de la década junto con el Teenage Dream de Katy Perry. Este disco continua la transición popera que ya mostraba Taylor desde el red, con la gran diferencia de que este disco tiene muchos menos momentos country pop.

Highlight: Blank Space

11. FKA Twigs - LP1

¿La revelación del año? Para muchos sí lo fué, y es que FKA Twigs le dió un nuevo aire al R&B, dándole un aire demasiado vanguardista, con la mezcla de sonidos de sintetizador y drum and bass con su bella voz.

Highlight: Video Girl

10. Cloud Nothings - Here And Nowhere Else

Un poco de post punk nunca le hace mal al año, a pesar de ser un género muy retomado y pervertido. Cloud Nothings mantiene ese sonido lo-fi que aún me enamora y sin sonar pretencioso o con muchas capas musicales, hicieron un disco duro y directo.

Highlight: I’m not part of me

9. Interpol - El Pintor

Cuando escuché por primera vez “All the Rage Back Home” me emocioné mucho pensando que (por fin!) Interpol regresaba a sus raíces. La verdad es que no fue así, ya que el disco sonó mayormente a Our Love To Admire, pero a mi gustó más El Pintor, y es que este álbum no tiene ningún segundo de desperdicio. Gran regreso de esta banda emblema de nuestra generación.

Highlight: All the rage back home

8. The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger - Midnight Sun

Cuando en tus venas corre la sangre de John Lennon es muy probable que tengas cierto don que te permita crear música bella, y es más probable aún que en determinado momento el trabajo de tu padre llegué a influenciarte a la hora de realizar el tuyo. Algo así sucedió para este trabajo de Sean Lennon junto con su banda, que nos entregan un álbum con grandes momentos de psicodelia y back to basics.

Highlight: Johannesburg

7. Sharon Van Etten - Are We There?

Cuando alguien cuida tanto los detalles de una producción musical, desde el arte de la tapa, hasta los más mínimos arreglos de sonido, podemos pensar que el resultado de este trabajo será positivo. Este es el caso del último álbum de Sharon Van Etten, sin duda una de las mejores singer/songwriters de nuestra generación.

Highlight: I love you but I’m lost

6. Ariana Grande - My Everything

What da fuck? Ariana Grande? Really? Sí, “My Everything” es el mejor álbum de pop de 2014 con el perdón de Taylorcita Swift. Ariana se supo juntar con gente de su ámbito que está teniendo mucho éxito o proyección hacia él, para lograr crear un auténtico compilado de potenciales hits de radio, con toques de pop al estilo Mariah Carey y r&b de Christina Millian. Disfrutable de inicio a fin.

Highlight: Be My Baby (feat. Cashmere Cat)

5. Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels 2

Run The Jewels tiene la capacidad para sacar un gran disco con menos de 12 meses de diferencia de su última gran obra. Además nos trajo las colaboraciones de dos de los personajes que más entrañamos todos los treintañeros: Travis Barker y Zack de la Rocha.

Highlight: Close your eyes (And Count to Fuck)

4. Freddie Gibbs and Madlib - Piñata

El buen rap está de regreso en esta década, prueba de ello es, además de King Kendrick Lamar, el regreso de grandes exponentes como Madlib, que hace una década realizó una de las mejores obras de la historia del hip hop (Madvillainy). Ahora se asocia con Freddie Gibbs para crear un disco de rap que es todo un homenaje a los 90′s, incluyendo sampleos de éxitos de esa década, o un canto a capella del coro de Waterfalls de TLC.

Highlight: I Get High (feat. Danny Brown)

3. Temples - Sun Structures

El regreso de la psicodelia en esta década es de las mejores cosas que nos ha entregado musicalmente hablando. Temples es un exponente que podría llegar a ser el nuevo Tame Impala si siguen realizando música como la contenida en este gran disco.

Highlight: Colours to Life

2. Weezer - Everything Will Be Alright In The End

Weezer sacó su mejor álbum desde.. “Pinkerton”! Es cierto que Weezer no nos había regalado buenos albumes desde hace mucho, solo dejándonos sencillos buenos que completaban excelentes setlists de conciertos, pero no pasaban de eso. A Rivers Cuomo le llegó la madurez para darse cuenta que se vendió, para al final de cuenta no tener éxito y perder fans. A manera de redención creó un disco sin desperdicios en el que inclusive nos dice “Sorry guys I didn’t realize that I needed you so much”.

Highlight: Go Away (feat. Bethany Cosentino)

1. Spoon - They Want My Soul

Spoon crea un disco perfecto de principio a fin, con el cual perfeccionan su estilo además de darle un toque más radio friendly que no les queda nada mal. Sencillos excelentes además de un sonido impecable en vivo, hacen de Spoon ser uno de los mejores grupos de los últimos años, reafirmándolo con They Want My Soul.

Highlight: Do You?
