New Order - Brotherhood (1986)

Thirty-eight years ago today, on September 29, 1986, Brotherhood, the fourth studio album by New Order, was released. The album succinctly illustrated the ongoing divide within the band—with the a-side of the record made up of rock songs and the b-side of dance songs—that would plague them until their breakup in 1993. However, the band was able to turn this creative stalemate into pop victory with “Bizarre Love Triangle,” the band’s US breakthrough track. Though the song would fail to chart on the national list, a remix was a smash dance hit, becoming a top 5 dance hit in the States. More importantly, the song gained traction on college radio stations, then becoming a force in the nascent alternative music scene.

You know what I just registered? Mike must also, on some level, realise that the monologue at least did not help El, because she ‘lost’ in his words. Even before he learned Vecna was back, he still knew Max was dead, and considered this El’s first big defeat.

So why isn’t he more hung up on his monologue not working? Why isn’t he hanging around El? His whole shtick was supposedly that he was afraid she wouldn’t love him once she realises he’s a loser, yes? So why is he gravitating to Will and letting her wallow, rather than staying by her side? His speech, at bare minimum, was utterly ineffectual and a distraction. So why isn’t he afraid that El will go ‘fuck this loser’ and dump him?
