Week 3: BOBO Districts: A Comparative Exploration of Urban Lifestyles in Paris and the United States
One of the most interesting parts of this week’s readings and class discussion was the compositional theory by Gans (The Urban Villagers). Being born and raised in Paris France, I do resonate with the way he sees the urban neighborhoods as a mosaic and how such composition influences community dynamics. I can clearly envision the 4 general urban lifestyles he describes in Paris: Cosmopolites, BOBOs (bourgeois bohemians), ethnic villagers and deprived or trapped. Among these four lifestyles, the one that intrigued me the most was BOBOs, as I thought it was only a term used in France to describe certain people living in Paris. This made me wonder about the presence of BOBOs areas in the US urban areas. By looking on the internet, I discovered that Neighbourhoods like Williamsburg, DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), and Park Slope in New York have attracted Bobos with their artistic communities, cultural events, and trendy coffee shops. But also, The Pearl District and Alberta Arts District in Portland, South Congress and East Austin in Austin, and, Silver Lake and Echo Parkin in Los Angeles. The US BOBO districts display the same characteristics as the Parisian ones, such as cultural vibrancy, artistic communities, green spaces, and trendy dining and shopping. I am curious to see whether “Gayborhoods” (Brown 2014), could overlap with BOBO neighbourhoods. Indeed, some neighborhoods may embody both characteristics, attracting both creative professionals and LGBTQ+ residents.

SDOC4 Finale Commentary
Now that SDOC is over, Saturday nights are gonna feel a little empty for a while. We won't get to see cutie and cool DD regularly but that's fine. There are still so many other things to do while we await their new dramas.
I was inspired to start this SDOC commentary series after the first ep but along the way, I missed 2 or 3 posts cos I got lazy, uninspired or just too engrossed to take notes while watching. I'm a terrible blogger hahaha...but that's alright. Cos fandom should be fun and not become a chore. Blogging is not homework. But I told myself I have to finish what I started, so here goes...
I've said it before and I will say it again. The show is too damn long, even for me who was sitting at home in relative comfort, with access to drinks, the toilet, snacks etc. Can't imagine what it was like for the captains, their crew, the dancers, the audience, the staff etc. I remember during one of the hotpot eps, the captains gave feedback and requested for the finale to be shorter. Also, snacks and drinks for the crowd. I wonder if it was fulfilled.
At one point while watching, it suddenly dawned on me that I'm experiencing the finale in real time (sort of), at the same time as Bobo. Then I got a bit gleeful at the thought, cos it's like a shared experience of sort, you know?
Throughout the season, I've been wishing that they'll include a little DD cam permanently onscreen, cos we all watch SDOC for WYB's reactions, right? But I actually didn't think of opening 2 windows (main show and WYB cam) while watching the finale and I was watching it on my laptop. I occasionally toggled to the DD cam when I got bored. By the time I realised I could do that, the show was more than halfway over. I felt so dumb. =(
Captains' Opening Dance
No surprises there, my favourite is Team Boom's showcase and it's not because I'm biased. DD has always been a fan of the old school funky style. Zin-san said that DD specifically requested to do it in the HB style. It must be a dream come true for him to be able to collaborate with H&B on a choreographed dance. I like the whole energy and how everyone is so synchronised. And DD just looked like he enjoyed every moment of it.
HG's Singing in the Rain was a nice touch and deviation from what he has done previously but I felt it was a tad lengthy for me. And a bit flat. I'm glad Henry managed to form his musical band and incorporate his violin music with his showcase. I'm surprised I even managed to recognise that Lay used his own song, considering that I don't even follow his music. It's great he tried to showcase different dance types in it but it didn't invoke any particular feelings in me.
This part here reminded me of DD's freestyle segment during his Wu Gan performance this year. I love it! It's my favourite moment of this whole segment. He looked so free, like he's just immersed in the moment.
Dancers' Showcase
My personal top 3:
1) H&B
I loved everything about this and I like that they stuck to their roots but also tried to infuse new elements to their showcase. The whole routine is full but not overly so, and there's sufficient variation to the moves and choreography so it's not dry. No fancy props or costumes or big moves, just pure old school dance. My fav is the part when the spotlight cast those giant shadows on the screen behind. Simple but impactful visually. And the free-fall drop move. I love it! And when you see DD's reaction at the end, you know we have a winner here.
2) Ye Yin
I felt like I was watching a show, a musical or something, and not a dance. Very rich elements, in the choice of props, visual elements, sounds used etc. I did think it was a little similar to his showcase during the SDOC party but maybe that was the point, cos I recall DD making a comment about that being a finale-worthy piece. Maybe it was like a call-back.
3) Chun Lin
Last year's Tonight was spectacular and it somewhat gave birth to DD's VOTF, which is my all-time fav. I'll never be over it! I know some people think Chun Lin's Cheating on You is similar to Tonight and not as innovative but it works for me. I like this kind of dance and I think it's quite a distinctive style of his. Now, if only I can see DD doing something like this again.
Under normal circumstances, I would have liked Mr Three's performance. The narrative is good and I like how the little dancer and him worked together. His mum is likeable and I thought it was smart of him to use the family card in the final showcase. Ultimately, his earlier controversy somehow marred his image in my eyes so I cannot bring myself to like him more.
Ibuki's showcase was powerful, full of energy and she really showed everyone who's the Queen of SDOC. But I thought it was a bit much, too full, in that the power and energy levels of the whole performance shot up to max right from the beginning and was then stuck at that energy level the whole time. I would have appreciated a little more build up, some transition.
Bouboo's Wakanda-inspired piece was enjoyable. I like the setup and their outfits looked great, but I thought there was a tad too much acting compared to dancing, although whenever he actually danced, it was top notch as usual.
Acky-san didn't do much dancing actually but I got the sense that it was by design. Eg. Him wearing the same outfit as everyone else so he won't stand out, and him spending a fair bit of time just squatting at the back behind the other dancers, while they danced, and the last part where he passed his hat to the boy to symbolise succession. I felt that his intention of this showcase was to let the younger generation of dancers have more of the limelight, to let them showcase themselves. But of course when he did dance, he stole the show. The guy has showmanship.
GOGO Brothers were great, as usual. I mean, there's really nothing to nit-pick about their technique but that's also the thing. The showcase was nice to look at but it didn't do much for me. Not very memorable nor were there particular wow moments. Tony Gogo's appearance was also less of a surprise here since he already appeared during the SDOC party episode.
Yang Kai's performance was not bad but like Bouboo, I thought there was a little too much acting and not enough dancing. I always felt that for a B Boy, he is really versatile. I did get a surprise when he unveiled his shaved head in the end.
I don't think Rochka's performance was deserving of the low score. I liked that he showcased his vocals in the beginning. Some parts were a bit messy and I didn't quite get the theme but I was surprised he scored under 100.
I generally like George but I don't think his performance deserved to be in the Top 8. It was a bit too disjointed for me, like a mish-mash of Chinese cultural elements, from the drunken fist, Wong Fei Hong music, kungfu moves, to the lion dance at the end. There's no central story or linkage between each segment. Felt like something more suited for a CNY TV show. I guess the oriental theme struck a chord with the judges.
I generally agree with the results of the final 8, although I think Poppin C should have made it instead of George. While it wasn't like wow, I thought it was a more coherent performance, plus the visual elements were superior. And Poppin C was able to showcase his techniques more.
Huang Xiao's piece gave me some Broadway, cabaret vibes. It's a nice performance but I don't think the SDOC stage was right for it.
I don't really remember much of Eleven. His piece was joyful. That's about it. He seems like a humble person though. I like his attitude.
I'm not sure if it was rigged or really such a coincidence, but the show achieved the tension they wanted when somehow it was GOGO vs H&B and George vs Huang Xiao during the elimination.
I have always liked Huang Xiao but what he said when he was eliminated didn't sit well with me. I thought it was a tad arrogant, like 'You people don't understand MY art.'' Maybe he didn't phrase his words properly but it sure reeks a little of lemons.
Similarly, I didn't like what Lay said when GOGO Brothers were eliminated. Maybe I'm a bit too sensitive but I thought by saying that everything is just a game, it is a little disrespectful - to the other contestants who left their homes and invested 6 months of their lives in the show, to the finalists and their team who worked hard on their final showcase, to the staff members and crew who spent months planning, to the captains who invested time and resources to provide guidance etc. To reduce all of these hard work and effort to 'just a game', just because your team members didn't make it to the top 8. I thought that was really uncalled for and again, reeks of lemons. Compare that to Henry's reactions and words when his team members got eliminated. Henry just came across as real sweet and encouraging, like 'you're still the best in my eyes, this is not the end' etc. There are better ways to encourage and console your team, instead of telling them that this thing doesn't matter, that it's not important.
Final Battle
Seriously, 25 rounds is just way too punishing. You can just see from the dancers' faces but kudos to them for persevering.
I like the vibes towards the end, like it's no longer a competition at that point. It's like a dance collab presented in the form of a battle. Eg. when the Justin Bieber track came on and Bouboo passed the mic over to Yang Kai when it was his turn. The best part was DD vibing to Justin Bieber. Did you all catch him mouthing the words and grooving? WYB's various reactions is really the star of the show. Somebody do a compilation from ep 1 to 12, please.
Despite all that was said and speculated on, I do think Ye Yin deserved the win based on this performance and the battle. Yang Kai had some great moves, like the one that made DD jump up, but overall, Ye Yin showed more versatility, variation, and consistency. There were several rounds where Yang Kai ended before the 30s were up but Ye Yin mostly continued till the end. That said, I have mad respect for all the dancers. I, for one, cannot dance to save my life.
DD raising both Yang Kai and Ye Yin's hands up at the end spoke volumes. They are both winners in his eyes. The message is clear. And the group hug at the end. He loves his Team Boom. You can really tell.
I also like that at the end when DD gave his little winning speech, he spoke about his admiration to all the dancers and how he hope the culture of Street Dance can reach more youth via the show and with the formation of the Alliance. This final moment isn't about Team Boom's victory. It's about their shared love for street dance and bringing this love and street dance culture to more people around the world.
I started watching SDOC because of DD but I stayed for the dancers and their never give up spirit. It is a huge time investment but this journey is an enjoyable one. No doubt it's tiring but I'm pretty sure DD enjoyed his time on the show, especially this season where he managed to learn from so many legends. I doubt he will be back for S5 but if he does, we'll be there with him.
Ending off with this precious smile.

Ojamajo character bios!
Nozomi Kotake
Nozomi was raised on her mother’s stories of witches, wizards, fairies and frogs. Like Doremi in her youth, she wishes she could learn magic herself. She’s not as clumsy as her mother, but is bored with the seemingly dull world around her, wishing for a change. Whenever her younger sisters get into an argument, she is usually the one to break up the fight. She was named after a deceased friend of Doremi’s. She loves steak, just like her mother.
Spell: Mizozo Mozini Nozoshi Nozoshimi!
Magical Stage spell: Mizozo Mozini Souzetsu Ni!
Transformation of choice: Any cute animal.
Favorite part of magic: Spellcasting.
Fairy: Nono.
Crystal: Pink Music Note.
Instrument: Ukulele.
Birthday: June 19.
Marika Kotake
Marika doesn’t believe her mother’s tales of magic, so she doesn’t expect anything out of the ordinary to happen to her. She’s stubborn and practical, but she genuinely cares for her friends and family. Like her aunt Pop, she detests bullies, but her ways of getting back at them manifest in the form of humiliating pranks. This often gets both her and her target into trouble at school. She was named after a figure from Doremi’s past. She doesn’t care for the nickname “Rika”, dislikes the nickname “Ricchan” and is especially humiliated by the nickname “Squishy-chan”.
Spell: Kiriri Kagiri Kirikaran Gan!
Magical Stage spell: Kiriri Kagiri Kettei Ni!
Transformation of choice: Witch Frog (Any witch can turn into one and back at will!).
Favorite part of magic: The aforementioned transformation spell, to Majorika’s chagrin.
Fairy: Haha.
Crystal: Emerald Sphere.
Instrument: Trombone.
Birthday: October 17.
Sakumi Kotake
Sakumi is the one who believes in magic the most of all. Because of this, she is sometimes ridiculed by the boys in her kindergarten and even by Marika. Despite this, she is unwilling to let go of her beliefs. She also has an eccentric side to her, and an interest in bugs.
Spell: Sarara Jarasa Jajasara Shazaraza!
Magical Stage spell: Sarara Jarasa Aisuru Ni!

Favorite part of magic: The flying broomstick.
Fairy: Bibi.
Crystal: Yellow Butterfly.
Instrument: Xylophone.
Birthday: March 2.
Himeko Akasaki
Himeko is quite popular amongst the boys in school. She is knowledgeable of Doremi’s stories, due to Nozomi passing them on to her. Though she initially believes them to be just stories, she nevertheless wishes to have magic herself so she can have some leisure, her mother having a life plan for her. She is astonished when a strange, green female being with a green crystal around her neck approaches the girl, having overheard her wish and wanting to grant it. She is interested in fashion and dressing up.
Spell: Himimi Mipipin Piririn Pimin!
Magical Stage spell: Himimi Mipipin Seijitsuna Ni!
Transformation of choice: Songbird.
Favorite part of magic: Doing whatever she wants freely (except for the forbidden magic).
Fairy: Momo.
Crystal: Ruby Diamond.
Instrument: Harp.
Birthday: January 8
Suzume and Suzumi Yada
The Yada Twins are both similar to the Kotake sisters in that they grew up on their mother’s tales of witches. Suzume is the more feminine one, while Suzumi is more tomboyish. Both enjoy classic literature (particularly fantasy, sci-fi and adventure), music and manga. Both of them are in the drama club, designing and making various props for school plays and student films.
Suzume
Spell: Mesasa Gururu Gumesa Merusa!
Magical Stage spell: Mesasa Gururu Kashikoi Ni!
Transformation of choice: Any kind of fish.

Annie Hisaishi
Momoko’s daughter, Annie possesses a sense of righteousness, believing that magic should be used to make people happy. She, too, was raised on her mother’s stories of a magical world. Like Momoko, she wears her hair in rings, but prefers to have them on the top of her head like Doremi. She is athletic, adventurous and a good friend of the Yada Twins. When she and the twins meet Dela, Annie jumps at the chance to learn magic.
Spell: Nakaka Nakaraka Garakara Nara!
Magical Stage spell: Nakaka Nakaraka Kakkinoaru Ni!
Transformation of choice: Mouse.
Favorite part of magic: Helping and benefiting others.
Fairy: Nana.
Crystal: Orange Plus.
Instrument: Zither.
Birthday: April 17.
Yuiko Arima
Tomboyish like her mother was as a kid, Yuiko was also told of a world of witchcraft since she was small. Like Marika, she is skeptical, until she meets the witch Majoayumu, who makes her an apprentice. Despite Yuiko being a rowdy student, Majoayumu never loses faith that she would be a good witch. Nevertheless, Yuiko is sent to Nozomi and her friends in the hopes that her studies will improve. She is mischievous and stubborn, but would never go so far as to use forbidden magic. She also cares deeply for her family and new friends. She thinks reptiles are cool, and she’s probably right.
Spell: Yuwara Yuwana Yuwarana Rarawana!
Magical Stage spell: Yuwara Yuwana Jihatsu Ni!
Transformation of choice: Any kind of reptile.
Favorite part of magic: Using it to pull off the impossible, except for forbidden spells, similar to Himeko.
Fairy: Juju.
Crystal: Amethyst Gear.
Instrument: Saxophone.
Birthday: September 22.
Bunko Kimitaka
She is familiar with tales of witchcraft thanks to her mother. When she accidentally sees the girls performing magic, they have no choice but to let her become a Witch Apprentice. Despite being a year older than Sakumi, she acts as her trusty sidekick once she discovers the secret. She’s kinda like a little girl version of Kronk from The Emperor’s New Groove.

Magical Stage spell: Fubaba Fuburara Kinben Ni!
Transformation of choice: Any weird animal.
Favorite part of magic: Using it to solve problems.

[Drama News] Peter Sheng's Picked Flowers 十里洋场拾年花 releases more stills
[Drama News] Peter Sheng’s Picked Flowers 十里洋场拾年花 releases more stills
Republican era drama Picked Flowers (十里洋场拾年花) released more stills to give us a look at it’s huge cast of experienced actors, with male lead Peter Sheng being the greenest of the bunch. I’m actually a little worried as I wasn’t exactly impressed with Peter’s acting in Go Princess Go (太子妃升职记) or Pretty Li Huizhen (漂亮的李慧珍), but this looks like a big production. So, I’m going to give it a chance…

Les conseils beauté du professeur Lazare #4
Tumblr media
Bonjour mes petites chéries, bonjour mes petits choux !
Quoi ? Comment ? Où j’étais passé ? Mais quelle question, Ezra !… Aux putes, comme d’habitude ! Reprenons. Donc nous allons faire le portrait de… Qu’est-ce qu’il y a encore, Ezra ?! Aussi long ?
Viens donc me voir à Fort Hope !...

GSL Abu Dhabi (day-2): Matthias 1°. Proficiat voor een knap judo-jaar !
(27-Nov-2021)
Jeroen Casse (°98; /-73kg; 63° WRL) : out (1 own)   Opent tegen Sam King (°96; Aus; no WRL), een internationaal onbekende Australiër.
Proficiat !

General and I Recaps
Yes, from now on, I’ll be trying to update you guys on the romance-novel-turned-into-drama-with-pretty-pretty cast called General and I. I’ll be reblogging posts from @dangermousie, though I cannot give you real time updates nor recaps as I AM NOT CHINESE AND I CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE LANGUAGE [if the drama is Japanese, I’ve a long shot]. Anyways, it will be my next project, but I warn you, as I’m also a working person [with loads of work], UPDATES WILL NOT BE ON REAL TIME. Most of the recaps I’ll be doing will be a long-shot analysis and comparison between the novel, and spoilers will be abound, so do stick around, and I hope I can give you satisfactory updates. I’ll be also updating on my ZenoXKaya fanfic, so do stick around.

Wang Yibo Song Recommendations
This is a way overdue post. I've been meaning to do a follow-up post to share my favourite Yibo songs after my previous 'Can Wang Yibo Sing?' post.
It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Singer XZ but I do enjoy many of Yibo's songs too. For the purpose of this list, I will not include Bu Wang cos it's a given. Obviously everyone likes it right?
Saying Sword
This is the theme song of the online game Moonlight Blade, released in 2019. Is it weird that my favourite WYB song (aside from CQL's) is a game song? His voice is perfect here and I love the overall richness of the song. The oriental tune, complemented by the poetic lyrics and juxtaposed against the rap verses. The MV is also a treat in itself with the beautiful imagery and Yibo doing the sword dance.
youtube
Young Mind
The theme song of the 2018 animated film Crystal Sky of Yesterday, in which Yibo was the voice actor of the character Qi Jingxuan (who's kinda similar to him - cool, slightly bad boy, doesn't speak very much but has a soft core and cares very much for his friends). I like the positive vibes of the song. It speaks of reminiscing one's youth, of chasing dreams, of growing up, but also looking ahead even if one's life doesn't turn out to be as expected.
I'm sharing this clip because it has bts and student Bobo is cute as a button. Full song here. He also performed this song on DDU. Link to the full movie if anyone's interested.
youtube
3. 无感 Wu Gan
Out of Yibo's four singles, Wu Gan is my favourite of the lot. Disregarding the awesome dance choreography, the song itself is great. I don't usually listen to rap music and although Wu Gan is very catchy, it's the lyrics that really enhanced my love for this song. The first time I really looked properly at the lyrics, I remember feeling very touched. At first glance it may seem like a declaration to haters, like you can try but nothing you say is going to hurt me, I don't care. I'll do me. But it's actually deeper and more nuanced than that - it's a summary of his journey, his innermost thoughts, reflection of his past hurt and insecurities, the lessons he learnt over these years. I would go as far to say that from this one song alone, I was able to learn more about Yibo than from some of his interviews. He really is mature and self-aware for his age and despite all that hate and setbacks, his heart is pure and he harbours no resentment. This bit is what touched me the most from this song. Comparing this song to The Rules of My World a year later, I got the sense that there's a shift in his mindset. More determined obviously, but his heart seems a little more...hardened? Not that it's a bad thing and it's understandable given what they went through in 2020. Maybe I'll do a proper analysis of Wu Gan some day when I'm in the mood.
youtube
Xi Wei
Well, this song needs no introduction. I was deciding between this and the song from Gank My Heart but ultimately decided on Xiwei (which refers to the first light of the day) cos of the criticisms the song received when it was first released, which I felt was totally unwarranted. I haven't watched Legend of Fei but I loved this song when I first heard it, even without looking into the lyrics. The song itself is brimming with affection, of a deep-seated love. It's a love confession written like poetry and presented as a song. Yibo's soulful rendition is the cherry on top.
youtube
Once Again
The theme song of the 2017 romantic comedy of the same name. This was one of the few duets that Yibo has done to date. It's a bittersweet love song and the MV is cute (I want a cuddly baby Yibo too). It tells the story of a young couple who still miss each other even after they are separated. Even though time has passed, the sweetness of their first love is still deeply etched on their minds and never will be forgotten. Feast your eyes on soft idol WYB cos we'll probably never see him like that again, judging from the acting projects that he has chosen in the past 1+ year.
youtube
BONUS
In my XZ song recommendations, I included my fav XNINE song so I will share my fav UNIQ song here as well.
6. Monster
This was the last song recorded and released by UNIQ. Sadly, there was never an official MV for this song and the first and last time they performed this song was during the 2019 Yue Hua family concert. Even then, the full UNIQ wasn't around and because of that, Yibo had to take on the role of vocalist in this live rendition. He did well and looks super good while doing it. I'm featuring the concert clip for obvious reasons but please check out the studio version. Yixuan penned the lyrics to Monster and it was said to be inspired by Twilight, which I found amusing. Xuan-ge, are you a twihard?
youtube
Nanhai
This isn't a full song and not even a proper performance but I just needed to include it in my list. Will we ever be blessed with a full version of Yibo singing Nanhai in the near future?

Week 2: How do students fit into the urban lifestyle?
On a trip to Center City a few days ago, my friend pointed out that University City felt like a “bubble;” he said that it didn’t “feel like an actual part of Philadelphia.” This had me thinking about how college-based neighborhoods fit into cities.
While a typical college town (ex: Davis, CA, which is about an hour and a half from my hometown in the Bay Area) is often centered around communities of young students and faculty, a college neighborhood is just one part of a larger, more diverse city. College neighborhoods have to integrate into the local urban culture and landscape.
This week’s readings focused on different types of “urban lifestyles,” as characterized by Gans and later extended by Palen: the cosmopolites, the BOBOs, the ethnic villagers, the deprived/trapped, and the LGBT households. However, it seems that none of these fit the identity of the average urban college student. For example, while most of us are single and childless, we are not our own households and do not have high incomes, and most of us do not live here for the nightlife or other urban amenities. It’s also worth pointing out that because of things like financial aid, students who may originally be from different backgrounds, like the so-called “deprived” or “ethnic villager”, are big parts of these neighborhoods, too.
I think that college students are an interesting type of urban residents. For example, in Boston, the average age of the city drops 10 years every fall as students move in. Here at Penn, most students are temporary tenants in houses or dorms, and many of us would not be living here if not for our status as students. University City would not be as diverse, in terms of socioeconomic status or background, if not for the existence of Penn and our obligation to stay close to the school.
I want to find out more about how college students and college-based neighborhoods fit into the city. Which urban lifestyle do we resemble the most, and are we another type of lifestyle that sociologists have not formally categorized? If we’re considered short-term residents and not actually a permanent part of the neighborhood, then how are there entire areas of cities defined by the existence of students (such as University City)?
