The Australian music scene has been strong for the past 15 years. From "dolewave" to driving post-punk to punk, many of my favorite bands have come from down under.

Soft Covers (Melbourne, Australia) is one of the best new Australian bands I've heard in a while. Listen, and you might not think they sound much different from Go Get Mum, The Stroppies or Boomgates. And you know what, you might be partly right. But those vocals, melodies and hooks are just astounding. "The Real Housewives of Porpoise Spit" is one of my favorite songs of 2023, and "Every Week" sounds like it could be an early Chills song (or The Bats/Minisnap: Kaye Woodward!!).

This is being released by Brisbane-based label Little Lunch Records (they also released the excellent LP from Renovator's Delight).

At the end of Back to the Future 3 when Marty returns to 1985 the Delorean rolls past a railroad crossing and comes to a stop within sight of the boomgate and the line of waiting cars. A few people even step out of their cars to get a better look at the spaceship looking thing that magically appeared on the tracks, but when it gets smashed to bits by a train a few seconds later nobody bothers to go look at the debris or make sure the driver got out in time. Like "huh, that's a weird car. Huh, it got hit by a train. Huh, I'm on lunch break, I gotta get back to work."

Jungle Breed are a Melbourne, Australia band that definitely have a sound that is a bit less dolewavy and a bit more upbeat Aussie pop in the vein of Go Get Mum, Boomgates, Pinch Points or one of my recent favorites, Soft Covers. And I'd like to throw in a reminder-comparison - don't forget Rush to Relax (Slovenia). They mine a sound similar to Jungle Breed, but with a bit more Flying Nun.

Hard to believe a band that sounds like this is on a label I've never heard of, but it's true. The LP "Wynona, Paloma, Papilloma" is being released by Blossom Rot Records. They currently have a stable of 11 artists.

the shopping centre i work in hates the employees who work there. i have just found out that the car park which is already across the road and so far away from the centre itself is now being moved even further away. the current car park has no lighting except one flood light at the back which sometimes isn’t even on and when you start at 6am like me it’s dark as fuck. the car park isn’t even paved either, it’s on dirt and the walking exit and entrance to the carpark is through trees and mud. they say security patrols but they don’t, i’ve worked here for almost three years and never seen security around. i am so fucking angry i have to walk like 10 minutes extra now just to get to the centre from the new car park and their only compensation is that it’s going to be free (like it fucking should be, the only reason this centre runs is from the stores inside and their employees you dickheads) and it’s now going to be paved instead of dirt. wonderful. thank you so much. i am going to fucking hurl myself from a bridge right now just from the sheer joy of that alone , thank you westfield <3

so theres this tv journalist called edison carter (hes probably bisexual) and hes investigating this case when he gets pulled off air and he wants to know why so he goes snooping about at night with his girlboss controller theora jones directing him and hacking into things. so he reaches the r&d department and finds a tape containing what happened on the case he was pulled off (people exploding thanks to adverts) so he makes a copy and tries to run. unfortunately he alerts the head of r&d who is a teen called bryce lynch who calls in two mercenaries (they are definitely bisexual and in love) to kill edison. edison nearly escapes but crashes into a car park boomgate reading MAX HEADROOM 2.3M and falls unconscious. the two mercenaries breughel and mahler bring edison up to bryce who downloads his memory and personality into a computer. the computer generated person's first words are max headroom, and this becomes his name. he is intended to replace edison who will be killed because he knows too much. the head of the network edison works for is unimpressed by max headroom due to his glitching and stuttering and demands the program is stopped. reluctant to "kill" this project he has gotten attached to bryce instead has breughel and mahler take max somewhere safe and deliver edison to a bodybank. edison is delivered but wakes up just before he is to be operated on and escapes. breughel and mahler are alerted to this while delivering max to a pirate tv broadcaster called reg and leave quickly to try and find him. reg fixes up his damaged max headroom machine and hooks it up to broadcast. meanwhile edison manages to get his camera to work long enough to contact theora who lets him stay at her house and recover. undeterred edison goes back the next night and confronts bryce. the head of the network sees max being broadcast and demands bryce contact breughel and mahler to take them to max. the mercenaries agree but plan on killing them to sell. before this can happen they try to escape but edison appears and confronts the head of the network about the adverts killing people. meanwhile reg is on the road with max in his bus watching this broadcast and calling it bollocks.

Several years ago Bedroom Suck was one of my go-to labels: Boomgates, Bitch Prefect, Blank Realm and Scott & Charlene's Wedding all came out with LPs within a few years of one another.

Full Ugly (Melbourne, Australia) were also releasing music during that time period. Made up of members from Milk Teddy and Totally Mild, Full Ugly sound like the "could" be from Australia. Yes, they sound a bit like Milk Teddy crossed with Scott & Charlene's Wedding, but there is also something completely unique here.

Bedroom Suck was instrumental in supporting the mid 2010s bloom of Australian music. Of course they continue to put out great music (listen to Dag).

I should mention that I bought this excellent 7" through Goner Records "Spring Cleaning 2022". Everything at the previous link is 50% off and Goner charges fair shipping.
