Le thé de l'Amitié - Brahim Boumedien-
Tumblr media Tumblr media

I don’t know who they hired to handle the Twitter account of the Cuban embassy in France but whoever it is they have no chill 😂
Tumblr media
Translation and description of the screenshot: December 27 is the 45th anniversary of the president Houari Boumediene. A leader respected by his people and by millions of Free Men around the world.
Then there’s three pictures of Boumediene with Fidel Castro.
Tumblr media
And then they tweeted this…
Translation and description of the second screenshot: Some men never die. 45 years after Houari Boumediene left. No Palestinian will forget Boumediene the man who said “I’m with Palestine no matter the situation”
And then there’s a video of Fidel Castro in Algeria and one of the speeches he made “We say to the Algerian people that you are not alone. With us and with you stand all the revolutionaries of the world. Long live the Algerian Revolution!”
I knew Algeria and Cuba had good relationships. The first Algerian president, Ben Bella, went to Cuba during the blockade in October 1962 Kennedy tried to stop him but Ben Bella was like “nah I’m going and you never know maybe I can be a middle man and fix the situation?” So he went to Cuba. He got a really warm welcome as a revolutionary (one of the men who made French colonialism bow) AND as a man who was braving the US blockade. So he just said screw it and decided to unconditionally support Cuba. He met Che Guevara there too and the three of them started making plans to help the revolutions that were going on back then especially in Africa.
So like I said I knew of the good relations between the two countries BUT I did not expect the account of the Cuban embassy to celebrate Boumediene and just throw shade at France and its allies so casually. I love it.

i hate when i'm reading a book set in the past and the author does this thing where the main character somehow has the perspective of someone from now and they also encounter like every symbol from the specific era depicted

i’m really spitballing here, but if i want to write anything on immigration detention law in the future, i really need to figure out how castro v dhs “should” be resolved and in particular how to unify it with boumediene
there’s easy distinguishing between immigration detention and military/milcom detention, but i think there really is a throughline because of weird shit that happened in the 90s and aughts. particularly, gitmo is interesting because it was first used to deal with the haitian refugee crisis, giving a landing + processing space that wasn’t in the US in a way that (the clinton admin hoped) wouldn’t afford the refugees additional rights; and you’ve also got the general way that american law deals with the american rights of non-americans (inconsistently) coming into play in both immigration + military detention
but you’ve also got a sort of double reacharound, where your position on what johnson v. eisentrager held determines what you can think of as the holding in boumediene being or should be and eisentrager has ‘an awful lot of alternative holdings’ (paul clement). this isn’t helped by boumediene being a kennedy opinion, perhaps the most unhelpful modern author wrt doctrine beyond breyer so i kind of want to throw up my arms from this and walk away, except that it could be neat.
something to focus on once i’ve exhausted other projects ig.
