Van Boening pockets 2018 US Open Bank Pool Championship
CueSports International, Henderson, NV (Mar. 24, 2018) — Shane Van Boening proved once again why he is the number one player in the U.S. as he went undefeated to win the US Open Bank Pool Championship.
The US Open Bank Pool Championship started Mar. 20 at Griff’s in Las Vegas, with a field of 20 players from across the country. It concluded Mar. 22.
Van Boening’s path to the finals included wins over: John Plunkett, 4-1; Tres Kane, 4-0; Ronnie Alcano, 4-0; Dee Adkins, 4-1. He then met Neal Jacobs of Chicago, Ill. for the hot seat match. Jacobs, an animated and aggressive player jumped out to an early 2-1 lead. But Van Boening played with patience to win the match by a score of 4-3 and send Jacobs to the loser’s bracket.
Jacobs scored wins over: Harry Platis, 4-0; Chris Lulek, 4-2; and Gary Lutman, 4-2, before losing the hot seat match to Van Boening.
In the finals, which were a single race-to-five format, Van Boening came out strong and determined not to leave Jacobs any open balls. Van Boening won the match 5-0, adding another US Open title to his resume.
Shane Van Boening, $3,000
Neal Jacobs, $1,500
Gary Lutman, $1,000
Brandon Shuff, $500
Dee Adkins, $250
Ronnie Alcano, $250
The US Open One Pocket Championship got underway Mar. 23, also at Griff’s in Las Vegas. The 29-player field has been whittled down to 16. Bracket is available at ctsondemand.com and free live stream at www.facebook.com/playCSI/.

Mosconi Cup XXIV - Ruijsink conducts opening boot camp for Team USA hopefuls
WITH THE 2017 MOSCONI CUP now less than four months away, American Team captain Johan Ruijsink has been holding his first training camp for possible team members at Griff’s Billiards in Las Vegas.
Taking place from 12th to 16th August, it is the Dutchman’s first opportunity to take a close look at some of the players who may make up the final five to contest the 24th annual Mosconi Cup at the Mandalay Bay from 4th to 7th December.
The players working out this week are Shane Van Boening, Oscar Dominquez, Billy Thorpe
Skylar Woodward, Dennis Hatch with Johnny Archer, fulfilling the role of Ruijsink’s vice-captain.
With the selection procedure this year entirely down to the captain, providing at least four of the five players selected are in the top ten of the rankings which conclude in early September.
“This December is going to be a massive job for the American team and I want to give ourselves every possible chance to win the Mosconi Cup. I’m looking at every player closely as the make-up of the team and their ability to gel will be of critical importance.
“The line-up for 2017 is not determined yet, but I need to start the preparation, because an enormous task awaits team USA,” he concluded.

The Pool Scene - Oscar Dominguez, Shane Van Boening - Mosconi Cup
New Post on http://thepoolscene.com/?p=22134
2017 Mosconi Cup Team USA standings after eight events
ONCE AGAIN, it was Shane Van Boening who took the honours as the eighth event on Team USA Mosconi Cup qualification took place in Oregon. The tournament was the Pac West Invitational and it was Van Boening who triumphed beating Filipino Ramil Gallego in the championship match to take maximum points.
High finishers included Dennis Hatch who is chasing a fifth Mosconi Cup appearance nine years after he made his MVP-winning debut at the MGM in 2009. Other contenders harvesting the points included Oscar Dominguez, a teammate of Hatch in 2009, and Skyler Woodward who enters the top ten for the first time.
The name of the game is to finish inside the top ten of the ranking once the 17th and final event has concluded in early September. Following that, Team USA supremo Johan Ruijsink will be making his picks from the top ten finishing players. To give himself some leeway in this make or break year for Team America, Ruijsink will be selecting four players from the top ten plus another whose final ranking won’t be of significance.

The Pool Scene - Dennis Hatch - Mosconi Cup
New Post on http://thepoolscene.com/?p=21799
2017 Mosconi Cup - Team USA update
WITH THREE more events played on the USA Mosconi Cup ranking, it’s that man again as Shane Van Boening once again tops the list after winning the Pro Players Championship at the Super Billiards Expo. That’s brings the total of events played up to seven as the South Dakota Kid looks to make his 11th appearance in the event.
2017 Mosconi Cup Team USA standings after seven events
Despite missing the World Pool Series events in New York for personal reasons, Dennis Hatch stays in the upper echelons as he looks to make his fifth appearance in the Mosconi Cup. This year it’s about finishing in the top ten once the 16th and final event has been played out in early September.
That’s when USA skipper Johan Ruijsink will be making his picks from the top ten finishing players. To give himself some leeway in this make or break year for Team America, Ruijsink will be selecting four players from the top ten plus another whose final ranking won’t be of significance.
There is a new West Coast event added to the roster and that is:
  June 23/25 – Pac-West Invitational – Portland, OR
Table: 9 ft
Players: Max 64
Added: $10,000
Grade: One
Spots are limited to 64 in this event so players wanting to enter should write to [email protected]
Due to a change in the format and scheduling of the World Pool Series events, players who gain points in both the main event and the secondary challenge event will have only the higher points out of two counting towards their ranking.

Cliffhangers Galore
Ralf Souquet Advances Via One of 12 Match-Deciding Shootouts As The Aramith Masters Goes Down To The Final 16
By Ted LernerWPS Media OfficerPhotos By JP Parmentier/WPS
(New York City)–One of the unique new features of the World Pool Series is the implementation of the shootout to decide matches that end up tied with one rack left. The idea is to create excitement for fans, as each player is left with just one type of shot to make; 5 tries at a difficult full table cut on the 8-ball. It’s the ultimate pressure shot as players are forced to show full bottle and guts to try and advance.
If day 2 of the Aramith Masters was any indication, fans can expect plenty of full throttle drama to decide matches going forward as we enter the business end of this, the second leg of pool’s newest tour. 72 matches were played today, and a whopping 12 of them were decided by shootouts.
Three of those nerve rattling shootouts featured England’s Chris Melling, who seemed attracted to the cliff hanging drama like a bee to honey. Melling’s stroke is normally steadied and honed by years of playing  snooker, but  several times today he cracked under the weight of the moment. He won his first shootout, then lost his second, which sent him over to the losers side of the double elimination bracket. The third time he found himself staring down the Philippines Dennis Orcollo, with five cut shots on the 8-ball to decide who would move on to the final 16, and who would exit the tournament. Melling beat the Filipino four shots deep into sudden death to stay alive.
Chris Melling, left, shakes hands with Dennis Orcollo after winning a thrilling shootout to advance to the final 16. It was Melling’s third shootout of the day
The day of drama started at 10am at Steinway Café-Billiards in the Queens section of New York City, with 90 players still battling it out. By the end of play near midnight, 16 players remained. All matches from here on in will now be single elimination, best of 3 sets, with each set being a race to 6.  Final sets that are tied at 6-6 will now be decided by the dreaded shootout.
Not everyone bothered to leave their fate to the nerve jangling shootout.  20 year old American Billy Thorpe put in two solid performances today to stay undefeated and advance. The Dayton, Ohio native has lately given every indication that he intends to live up to the lofty expectations American pool fans are placing on his shoulders. He  first beat England’s Mark Gray, 9-4, then came from 6-3 behind on the TV table to beat the Philippines Jeffrey De Luna, 9-7, to qualify for the final 16 round.
20 year old American hopeful Billy Thorpe won twice today to advance to the final 16.
“I like playing from behind because it makes me focus even more,” Thorpe said afterward.  “I just grind it out. That’s what I do. I like having that pressure. I’m here to show what I can do.”
Two-time World 9-ball Champion Thorsten Hohmann has looked the goods the last two days. The German won twice today including a 9-6 win over England’s Darren Appleton. Appleton was sent over to the losers bracket but eventually qualified for the final 16   with a scrappy 9-6 win over the Philippines Johann Chua.
The Philippines Roberto Gomez seems to want to live up to his “Superman” moniker as he put in two terrific performances Thursday. Gomez first beat Spain’s David Alcaide, 9-4, then took down red hot Jayson Shaw 9-6. Shaw, however, bounced back from the losers side with a fine 9-4 thumping of fellow Brit Karl Boyes to advance.
Greece’s Alexander Kazakis has been the most dominant player of the tournament so far, only conceding 7 racks over three matches. The young Greek qualified for the final 16 by beating England’s Raj Hundal, 9-4. Hundal then went to the cliff with fellow Englishman Mark Gray, and barely squeaked by, winning a thrilling shootout to advance to the final 16.
Estonia’s Dennis Grabe continued his run of putting in impressive performances in pool’s big events. The tall and quiet Grabe looked very strong with two victories today to move into the final 16, first beating Karl Boyes, 9-6, then defeating Carlo Biado, 9-7. Biado bounced back but barely, qualifying to the final 16 by beating American Shaun Wilkie in yes, you guessed it, a shootout.
German legend Ralf Souquet had a real slog today as he won three matches off the losers’ side to advance. Souquet, who recently won a Euro Tour event and seems to have rediscovered his infamous golden stroke, had to wait to the bitter end in his third match with American Josh Roberts. The two went to the hill, and, yes, the shootout, which Souquet handily won, to book a spot in the final 16.
The World Pool Series Aramith Masters continues Friday at Steinway Café-Billiards with the Final 16 single elimination, which begins at 12 noon, EST.  By the end of the day, the field will be down to the final four. The Semis and Finals will be played on Saturday.

Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour "Turning Stone Classic XXVI 9-Ball Open"
Turning Stone Classic XXVI 9-Ball Open – August 25-28, 2016
Mike Zuglan’s Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour, www.joss9balltour.com  and Turning Stone Resort Casino are proud to present our 2015-2016 Season Finale, The $25,000 Added, “Turning Stone Classic XXVI 9-Ball Open”. This event will take place in Turning Stone’s beautiful & spacious Event Center which is known worldwide as one of the best venues ever. There are no bad seats, and the layout allows you to mingle with all of your favorite players and friends, giving you the feeling of being part of the action yourself. There is an aura of intimacy that seems to surround you at these events. If you have never been to Turning Stone, located in Verona NY, you simply don’t know what you are missing. Check them out at www.turningstone.com
For an unprecedented 26th time, we will have a full field of players with no shortage of past, present and future Champions. Jayson Shaw, Rodney Morris, Karen Corr, Jennifer Barretta, Immonen, Dechaine, Hohmann, & Sossei are just a few competing in this world class event. Don’t think for a minute that any of these players are a “lock” to win. Joss Tour regulars like Souvanthong, Casanzio & Dupuis just might have something to say about that. Then there are the many others that have a legitimate chance of making history, and even more that are very capable of a high finish. So look for anything to happen when the smoke clears on Sunday night. I am pleased to also announce that this event, in addition to being a BCA event, will be a Level Two, Grade One, Mosconi Cup ranking event for 2016! The complete player list (subject to change) can be found on our sitewww.joss9balltour.com
There will once again be a “Second Chance” tournament on Sunday August 28 at 10AM running continuously and concurrently with the main event until completed. This is an event for those Non Pro level players (I will decide) eliminated from the main event. The event format will be as follows: $60 Entry Fee – 32 Player Max – same rules as main event – Single Elimination – Races to 4, best 2 of 3 sets, with the deciding set a single game sudden death. This means that if each player wins a race to 4, there will be a lag for the break and a 1 game playoff to determine the match winner. Entries will be taken for this tournament as players are eliminated from the main event and will be treated as first paid – first in until the event is full.
The equipment for our world class event will once again be 16, 9 foot Diamond Pro tables covered with 860 Simonis (“The Cloth Of Champions”) tournament blue cloth. We will be using the new Aramith Tournament TV Pro Cup balls. Thanks again to Ivan Lee for providing us with the World’s best cloth and the World’s best balls! All of these items will be for sale in tournament used condition, and only seriously interested parties are urged to contact Mike Zuglan immediately at 518-356-7163 for info and pricing.
Being a spectator at Turning Stone is an experience you won’t find anywhere else. We always offer fans, Free Admission, Free collectible posters (while supplies last) and once again Turning Stone will be giving away a $10 free play to all players and fans. So you get Free admission, Free posters and Free bets!! No one else does it like Turning Stone and the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour! Included in the Event Center at Turning Stone is a full service snack bar serving all of our favorite foods and adult beverages. There will be billiard product vendors and on site cue repairs available for all your needs. We will also be raffling off 2 gorgeous, custom, engraved Joss Cues on Saturday at 8pm and Sunday immediately prior to the final match and you Do Not have to be present to win. These cues have a retail value of $1,700 each and are generously provided by Danny Janes of Joss Cues Ltd. Thanks again to Danny, Debbie & Stephen Janes for all they do for us!! We will also choose a winning ticket to receive the Pro Cup cue ball used in the final match autugraphed by the winner.
So come to Turning Stone Resort Casino August 25-28 for a great experience and 4 full days of some of the best pool you will ever witness. If for some reason you are unable to make it, there will be a Free live stream and live scoring expertly provided by Mike Howerton & Jerry Forsythe( www.azbilliards.com ), Upstate Al Leon, The Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour and Turning Stone Resort Casino. Match times are Thursday 4, 6, 8, & 10 pm. Friday 10 am, noon, 2, 4, 6, 8, & 10 pm. Saturday 10 am, noon, 2, 4, 6, 8, & 10 pm. Sunday 11 am, 1, 3, 5, and the final match at 7 pm.
