SUNCOAST (2024)

Writer/director Laura Chinn’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama rides on a very specific high concept – some may even say a slightly obscure one, at least at this point in history.

It is based upon a true circumstance in Chinn’s life. In the early 2000s, her brother was placed in hospice because he was dying of brain cancer. That in itself is horrific and tragic enough. However, fate placed her brother in the same medical facility as Terri Schiavo, a brain-dead former insurance agent who became a political and legal hot potato when her husband wanted to remove her feeding tube so that she would not be kept alive when she had no quality of life.

Her parents sued her husband in an attempt to keep her alive. Governor Jeb Bush and the state of Florida (where Schiavo was in hospice) jumped in and tried to legally force the husband (and the care facility) to keep her alive against their own will. It became a huge story and political battle about euthanasia, full of angry protestors (on both sides), vitriol between family members and hundreds of news stories. Even the then-President (George W. Bush) weighed in with his opinion.

The experience of being even on the outskirts of such a huge partisan scandal, at the same time as dealing with her own tragedy, has obviously had a considerable influence on Chinn’s life. She has revisited it before as a writer. Even before this film, the actress/comedian/writer had written about what happened in a section of her book Acne.

Chinn has changed some of the specifics of the story, including fictionalized versions of her character and others based upon people she knew. She even changed the name of the health facility where it all happened – calling the place Suncoast, when the actual name was Woodside Hospice House.

So, yes, Terri Schiavo was an important part of Chinn’s life.

Still, it’s been nearly 20 years since the Schiavo case. She died in March of 2005. And, honestly, there have been hundreds of political firestorms since then. I remember the story, but I’m a political and historical junkie. And even I had forgotten more than I remember about what happened in the case.

Nineteen years on, how many people have a strong memory of the case? More to the point, there is nearly a generation of younger people – who really should be a huge part of the audience for this film – who probably have never even heard the name. For example, actress Nico Parker, who does a spectacular job in the lead role here, was a baby when Schiavo died. What really are the chances that she had ever heard of her before receiving this script?

How many people will watch this film specifically for the Schiavo connection?

More to the point, honestly, the most interesting parts of Suncoast have absolutely nothing to do with the scandal or the demonstrations outside of the hospice. A teenaged girl dealing with death, her prickly relationship with her mother who often was so wrapped up in her son’s illness that she took her daughter for granted, and a shy girl’s attempts to be normal and make friends while in the middle of her own tragedy – all of these things are much more intriguing, and important, than the political firestorm going on nearby.

To a certain extent, the film’s brush with history works against it. You could cut the entire Schiavo situation from the film, and the film would not be harmed. In fact, it might be better.

Because the real story here is the strained relationship between Doris (Parker) and her mother Kristine (Laura Linney) who are having trouble dealing with each other while they are dealing with the inevitable tragedy speeding their way. The scenes in which Parker and Linney spar and push each other’s buttons have some of the strongest acting in this early year.

There is also a surprisingly smart section when Doris finally makes friends by offering up her home as a party spot while mom is staying over with her brother. However, unpredictably, these girls are not just using Doris – even after the party idea is blown-up by Kristine showing up unexpectedly during a partially unclothed game of Truth or Dare – and actually become close, understanding, giving friends who are there for Doris when she needs support.

Which brings us to perhaps the most confounding part of Suncoast. Doris befriends a middle-aged protestor named Paul who she runs into in line at a nearby restaurant. Woody Harrelson is always a welcome presence, so you nearly overlook the fact that his relationship with Doris makes no real sense. Why is this fifty-something widower spending so much time hanging out with a 16-year-old girl? Get your mind out of the gutter, it doesn’t appear to be sexual. He seems to see himself more as a mentor, a friend and a shoulder to cry on. But why is he there?

Honestly, although he’s supposedly one of the Schiavo protestors, he doesn’t seem the type. Yes, he is gutted by the loss of his late wife, but honestly, he barely appears to be the reactionary type. At one point in which he vilifies Schiavo’s husband for wanting to allow his wife to die naturally, it feels unnatural coming out of this caring, mostly easy-going guy’s mouth. Also, he often blows off the protests just to be there for Doris, whether she wants him to or not. He just seems to be protesting because it is something to do.

Also, what does Doris see in Paul? As a father figure? As an escape from the bleakness of the clinic? As a potential romantic partner for her mom down the line? It is never really clear, to the point that the whole subplot feels a bit awkward.

However, the scenes where mom and daughter come to terms and where Doris grows into her young womanhood while juggling tragedy with more base teen girl issues keep Suncoast fascinating. These are the stories that Suncoast should really be concentrating on telling.

-> Luke's father worked in the entertainment business for 40 years, music, film, TV, aliens and holograms. Luke grew up with it so he frequented many studios and labels and was always on set or surrounded by notable actors or people.

-> In school he liked Shakespeare and musicals.

-> He would be a lawyer if he wasn't an actor, but he doesn't think it would suit him.

-> He returned to London after university and discovered a documentary that talked about fighting the remaining nazis that existed in London and this sparked his interest in their culture and religion. He spent a year and a half doing research and investigating, he discovered that his neighbor across the street (who was 91 years old) was part of this anti-nazi group and that even his late grandfather participated. He was greatly influenced by this story and it helped him rediscover his Jewish identity and feel comfortable with his culture.

-> Luke is not orthodox. When asked if all this helped him find a path to his religion, he replies:

"Exactly. I mean, I'm not Orthodox. But I feel peace of mind, a sense of... I've now found where I belong in some way. I'm sure it'll probably change in a year, but I feel good about it now."

-> He is the only member of his acting class from 9 years ago who managed to make a living out of it. He says:

"We've all come close, we've all been rejected. We all work hard. Nine times out of 10 you'll get losses, so it is for the thick-skinned. If you're not living, breathing, smoking it each day, it's not for you. I'm the only person in my acting class from nine years ago who makes a living out of this. If someone came to me at 16 and was like, "I want to act," I 'd be like, "Do it now. If it doesn't work out within two or three years, do something else you enjoy. Or find something to do and if you want to do it on the side, then great. Because if you put too much emphasis on it, it will hurt you."

-> Luke's father also lives in LA. Luke wants to stay close to his friends and family. He says:

"My dad lives in L.A.; he's my best friend. I step out of line, he'll tell me immediately. And I've got good friends."

And:

"I don't think I could ever get to that place because my friends, my family, are the most important, the most constant, things in my life. Apart from my football team, of course."

(when he says my football team he means Arsenal because he's a fan.)

-> Luke likes to be professional (and very responsible) when it comes to money. He says:

"As an actor, I'm a professional. As a friend, I'm a professional. I'm there to do my job. But I also need to be professional about money. Obviously you have an accountant, but you need to do your own checks and balances. Otherwise you can get into a lot of trouble."

Gordon Michaels was born in Detroit, Michigan. His father is of Italian, Irish, and Jewish decent and his Mother is of Cuban ancestry. Michaels spent most of his youth in Michigan and graduated from John Glenn High School where he played basketball for the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams and still holds the school record for most rebounds in a game (27). As a teenager, Michaels spent a lot of after school time practicing and performing as lead singer for his Detroit garage band Flash Experience. The group performed at some high school events as well as various venues around metro Detroit. Michaels love for both writing and performing music is something very close to his heart. In fact, he's written a number of songs over the years and looks forward to taking them into the studio to record.

After attending a performance of a community theater production of Man of La Mancha, Michael's was stung by the acting bug. In 1986 Michaels became a graduate of the prestigious Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater in New York City where he studied under world renowned acting teacher Sanford Meisner. Michaels spent a number of years under the tutelage of Uta Hagen and Herbert Bergoff at the renowned HB Studio in New York City.

In addition to writing, producing, and staring in the film Unbeatable Harold, which featured Henry Winkler, Phyllis Diller, Charles Durning and Dylan McDermott, Michaels can also be seen in the Miramax released, This Must Be The Place with Sean Penn, Fox Searchlight's Conviction with Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell, Love and Honor with Liam Hemsworth, Warner Bros Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Some of Michaels other film credits include; Out of the Furnace with Christian Bale and Woody Harrelson, Hostel Part 3, Street Kings Motor City, The Cooler, Joe Dirt, Seduced by a Thief, Leaving Las Vegas, and Gifted Hands, with Cuba Gooding, Jr.

Michaels is also recognized for his work on ABC's award winning legal drama The Practice, and can be seen in the up-coming feature Escape Plan 2: Hades with Sylvester Stallone and Dave Batista. Michaels is founder and President of the motion picture company Brandon Street Films, an independent production company dedicated to creating an artistic home for filmmakers.

Merlin Santana (March 14, 1976 – November 9, 2002) was an American actor and rapper. Beginning his career in the early 1990s, Santana was best known for his roles as Rudy Huxtable's boyfriend Stanley on The Cosby Show, Marcus Dixon on Getting By, Marcus Henry in Under One Roof and Romeo Santana on The WB sitcom The Steve Harvey Show (1996 – 2002).

Born in Upper Manhattan, New York City to parents from the Dominican Republic, Santana's career in show business began with a push from his parents, who wanted to keep him off the tough streets of New York. He began his career at the age of three as an advertising model for a fast food chain. His first screen appearance was as an extra in the Woody Allen film, The Purple Rose of Cairo.

Acting Career

In 1991, Santana landed a recurring role on The Cosby Show as Stanley, the boyfriend of Rudy Huxtable and the rival of Rudy's friend Kenny (Deon Richmond). He was then cast as Marcus Dixon in the short-lived sitcom, Getting By, starring Cindy Williams and Telma Hopkins. Deon Richmond was cast as his brother Darren, due to their interaction on The Cosby Show.

In November 1994, Santana appeared on Sister, Sister as Joey, who falls in love with Tia and Tamera (Tia and Tamera Mowry) at Rocket Burger.

In 1995, Santana was cast as Marcus Henry in the short-lived CBS family drama Under One Roof, co-starring with James Earl Jones, Joe Morton and Vanessa Bell Calloway. Between 1996 and 1999, he played the role of Ohagi on Moesha.

In 1996, he landed the role of Romeo Santana on The Steve Harvey Show. In 2001, he played the role of Jermaine in the movie Flossin. In 2002, he appeared in the VH1 TV movie, Play'd: A Hip Hop Story with Toni Braxton. That same year, Santana had a role in the Eddie Murphy comedy Showtime. His last television acting role was on the UPN series, Half & Half, while his last film role was in the 2003 comedy film, The Blues with Deon Richmond.

Death

On November 9, 2002, Santana was murdered while sitting in a car in Los Angeles. Santana and his friend, actor Brandon Adams, just left an acquaintance's home in the Crenshaw District when the suspect Damien Andre Gates fired the shot that entered through the trunk of the vehicle in which Santana was a passenger. The bullet penetrated the right-front passenger headrest and entered Santana's head, killing him.

On November 18, 2002, Santana, age 26, was buried at Saint Raymond's Cemetery in The Bronx borough of New York City.

Trial and Allegations against Gates

In 2003, Gates was convicted of the first-degree murder of Santana and the attempted murder of Adams and was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences plus 70 years in prison.

Brandon Douglas Bynes, the other suspect who was with Gates during the shooting, received a 23-year sentence after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon.

An LAPD officer involved in the case testified that Monique King, reportedly shooter Gates's girlfriend, only aged 15 at the time, falsely claimed that Santana made sexual advances towards her which prompted the Gates' and Bynes' attack.
