(i accidentally lost the original pseudo-essay i wrote about my version of corpse bride. so here’s me trying again and failing)
you have never been unconditionally loved. you are too awkward, you are too eager. you are alone in the world, you live in a close-knit community, in a family which doesn’t fully recognize you as one of their own. it’s as if you’ve lived your entire life as a ghost. you don’t exist unless you’re perceived. you stay locked up gathering dust in a big old house, you are pulled down by the roots of a tree and buried alive but not really. you are dead and alive at the same time. you are sickly and lonely and you think so much about death it’s like you’re already being fitted into your coffin. death sounds like a horror and a relief. death is your first option and your last resort.
you are expected to become a man, to be a husband and a father. you are expected to become a woman, to be a wife and a mother. marriage is what is expected of you. marriage is your dream and your nightmare. you cannot escape this curse. you will never match up to the expectations set upon you. you crave a spouse more than anything in the world, because you crave understanding, you crave finally feeling loved, you crave it so badly it’s gonna drive you insane if it hasn’t already.
marriage is the only true chance for binding everlasting love, marriage is a bureaucratic process made to fit you into the structure of a family. you must have children, you must do what is expected of you, you must be husband and wife, father and mother. you have been prepared for this your whole life, you know nothing about being a spouse. you want kids, you can’t have kids, you will live in the fear of bringing a life into this world that will experience the same existential dread you suffered, and you will have nothing to shield your child from it. you want to play house. you want to run away. you want to be what your parents want from you. you never knew your parents. they live in you, but you never lived in them. they are strangers to you, strangers you know too well.
marriage means you will never be alone again. marriage means you will never be alone again. you have nobody who understands you, and this is an opportunity you cannot pass. you can’t truly know the person you will spend the rest of your life with, but you can try. you won’t, though. but you’ll try. not even in death you will completely understand this person. this may be a doomed enterprise. but at least there’s a chance for a milisecond of exhilaration, a clarity and a truth, joyful or not, that will be revealed at the climax of the ritual. at least, maybe, you won’t feel so alone.
but you know marriage means you will never be alone again; it says nothing about feeling alone. maybe nothing will change. maybe all that’ll change is the big old house and the face that shares the cold rooms you live in. maybe you’ll love each other in the way you’re meant to. maybe you will reveal your spouse who you are, and what they see is ugly and dirty and unbearable and repulsive and they will hate you forever, silently, because now they’re bound to you. maybe you’ll spend the rest of your lives avoiding the other, wandering the halls of the big old house, now both of you gathering dust, and the loneliness will become a deeper, darker hole. maybe this chance for understanding and happiness is only the next step in becoming truly miserable.
so you fall in love with death, with her silent promises of peace. you fall in love with love, with him finally understanding you. death will be the final release. the dead don’t have desires nor anguish. they cannot yearn, they cannot feel alone. they might miss their lives once and again, but they have come to terms with the impossiblity of returning to the past. they are wise in a way no living person can be. they exist on another plane, and for them existence six feet under is solely a parade of new arrivals that share the latest news of life on top. death is spent learning. death is never-changing, a butterfly pinned behind glass. death is the stability one cannot possibly achieve in life. death is quiet. death might just feel like home.
of course, you also crave the attention of being mourned, and the freedom from responsability. but you are expected to become a man, to become a woman. but you’re a child in a black suit, a child in a white gown, being given a script on how to be a real person.
you have been so blinded by your despair and your loneliness you can only think about yourself and your needs. you would kill a man, you would drink the poison for your selfish desires. you are half-aware that the ones who love you, in their own crooked ways, will suffer for your actions; but life, unlike death, goes on. they will get over it. life goes on. they will be scarred, and their wounds will heal. you, you will be forever safe in the stability of eternal rest.
you are selfish and cruel, you are sad and desperate. you are the victim and the victimizer. you see no other alternative to this. you would give anything for an adoring gaze, for a tender hand holding yours, for a soft kiss under the veil. you are so desperate, you would give up your life.

Decided to look at my Warner Archive collection—like my Criterions, it skews very contemporary (I’m working on that—there’s a ton of great film noirs and golden age musicals in the back catalog that I’m interested in picking up).
I do love that my very first one was Mask of the Phantasm, aka the Best Batman Film. And I don’t care if it was a flop, I think they need to add Sugar and Spice so I can pair it with Drop Dead Gorgeous.
