After researching into consumer rights regarding concert tickets I found that if the artist shows up to the show and performs then their contract has been honoured meaning that the consumer isn’t legally obliged to gain a refund. In addition, I found that the o2 dealt with the travel situations when Justin Bieber was late on stage by working with Transport For London to ensure that late tube services and having Thames Clipper provide boat services to central London. Furthermore, I found that some venues will allow consumers to apply for a refund and look at each one as a case by case basis dependent on credibility. I also came to the conclusion that with the event running on a Friday night that local public services run later with it being the weekend so the fans would have had definite alternatives for travel.

The second question was:

2. Were you aware of the 11.30pm curfew at the venue?

For this I researched into what happens if an artist breaks the curfew and found that many artists get fined heavily for breaking curfew. Justin Bieber was an example that came up again as when he came on late at the o2 he also finished an hour later than scheduled. I found out that the local council in the area have a noise ban set in place at 11pm and Bieber played until 11:30pm racking up a fine of £300,000. I also found that Guns ‘N’ Roses had their set cut short when they broke the curfew and established that venues have to do this in order to comply with the local law.

The second topic given was “sponsor”.

The scenario was:

You are running a new festival in Lincolnshire this Summer and have agreed a sponsorship deal with BP. This is a new venture for them and they are underwriting all of the costs for your event. However, local environmental groups are unhappy with BP’s involvement.

In the same way that I analysed the first scenario I did the same for the second picking out that the deal had been agreed with BP, it was a new venture, they are underwriting costs and environmental groups aren’t happy. The first step I took was to research BP and what their business had done that would have upset environmental groups and quickly found that they had been involved in a number of large scale oil spills including the one in The Gulf Of Mexico where 200 million gallons of oil was spilt.

The first question was:

1. What is the value to you of having a sponsor involved with your event?

My first thought was how is the sponsor valuable to us than to them? Potentially the sponsor allows the festival to reach a new audience and gain more exposure. By them funding the event it allows the event to be much bigger and potentially bring in huge artists. It gives the festival a second vision as the sponsor may input ideas for how the festival can run and features it may have. This then made me believe that it is more valuable to the sponsor than to the festival itself. For example, it allows the sponsor to be associated with the festival experience that is positive and it may give the attendee a different viewpoint of the sponsor. It can completely change a brand’s image and the attitude towards that brand making it a perfect venture for BP.

2. BP have been linked with a number of high profile cases involving environmental damage. Are they appropriate partners for an event in the Lincolnshire countryside?

This question was difficult because if I was in this situation properly I wouldn’t venture forward with BP due to the reputation that they have, which made the question harder to answer. I looked into BP to see if they had sponsored anything similar. I found that BP had been invested heavily in arts and culture by funding public institutions. They had sponsored The National Portrait Gallery, Royal Opera House and The Royal Shakespeare Company plus many more! This showed that BP would be fitted to supporting the festival as it is similar to their other investments. I also found that BP are trying to recreate their brand image by helping the environment. For example, they are reviewing environmental issues regarding greenhouse gas emissions, air quality, energy efficiency and water use. In addition, they are working to respond quicker to oil spills to reduce the overall impact. If I was given a choice of what sponsor the festival would have used Starbucks would have been a better choice for the environment due to their works in reducing waste and energy efficiency.

The third scenario was “drugs at venue”.

The scenario was:

The residents whose homes overlook your venue have complained to the police that groups of youths are gathering behind your venue and they believe that drug deals and drug use is taking place. Syringes have been found in the car park during the daytime.

For this scenario I picked out that local residents were concerned, there had only been concerns of drug deals but syringes have been found. This allowed me then to research into venues that had seen this type of problem and what had been their response to it.

The first question was:

1. Have you taken advice from anyone regarding dealing with this issue?

I looked into who to contact if you had suspicion of drugs being on premises and found advice from the police was the correct route. By working alongside the police I knew that they would have suggested how to go forward with the issue such as installing CCTV in badly lit areas/blind spots around the venue so that we can close in on suspected deals. In addition, having a condition of entry meaning that if security believes that the attendee doesn’t meet conditions they will be refused entry. Speaking to local drug rehabilitation centres about putting up warning posters about consequences of drug taking and helplines.

2. Are you aware of a problem with drug dealing at your venue?

With this question I knew I couldn’t act totally unaware of the situation as it would make it seem as if I didn’t care about the issue. Music venues are popular places for drugs to be present and venue owners have to be aware that even if they think their venue is the last place this could happen it could still happen. At the venue we would ensure searches before entering the venue would be more thorough and the introduction of sniffer dogs at the entrance to the venue to make sure drugs don’t get in the venue. Staff would also be trained in dealing with the issue and how to spot possible deals or people taking drugs as well as how to report it. I looked into examples of where drugs had been found and found that Fabric in London had their licence taken away due to them not trying to deal with the situation. I found that if venues don’t work within the law and their premises are “associated with serious crime or disorder” then under the Licensing Act they could risk closure.

With this scenario I knew that the local residents were a main priority and needed to be kept updated with what was happening whether that be via press releases or social media.

The final scenario was “crisis management”.

The scenario was:

The artist you manage made a statement from the stage at last night’s show where he stated that the Pope was ‘probably’ aware of child abuse by priests in his own country. That has been picked up by the media who now want to question your artist about that statement. In this scenario, I could already think of a few examples due to watching The Dixie Chicks movie in one of our lectures. This scenario, I felt, was the most difficult out of the four due to the nature of the subject. I looked into The Dixie Chicks and how their manager dealt with the backlash as well as how the artists themselves followed up from the statement. In addition, I looked into artists such as James Arthur and Adele who had both caused a stir on social media. James Arthur being due to the homophobic comments he had tweeted online and Adele having to have her Twitter managed 24 hours a day due to drunken tweets she had sent out.

The first question was:

1. Has your artist apologised for their statements?

For this question I would have answered yes, as it wasn’t truly reflecting how the artist really felt and the comment was only made in the heat of the moment out of frustration. I would have then talked about how the artist now knows that the comments made would offend people outside the venue once the word got out. I would have gone on to say how the artist is going to release a statement to the public about what was said on stage whilst apologising for any offense caused.

2. Does your artist believe that the Pope knew of the alleged abuse?

For this question I researched further into the story surrounding the Pope to find that he has a zero tolerance policy for child abuse and had recently sent letters to all current priests saying that any abuse towards children will not be tolerated and priests should work to prevent it. I would have spoken about how the media are making the story more public allowing people to gain opinions that are necessarily factual which is what the artist has done. This would then be followed up by saying although the artist feels passionately about the solution after thinking it through the artist now realises that what was said was inaccurate. I would have also said how the artist has a number of media appearances lined up to speak about what happened and to set straight that this will not happen again. I would have said I have trust in my artist that they will not cause controversy like this again.

On the day, I was given the scenario of “drugs at the venue” and I felt my performance was average and there was definite room for improvement. I feel that I researched the questions well and knew how to answer them however when put in front of the camera I let nerves get the better of me. I felt well prepared for the additionally questions as I had some research linked to them. The question regarding legislation I knew the answer to although I mucked up the name of the act.. I had thoroughly thought about the locals and how to keep them involved with what was going on at the venue. I need to work on my nerves when put in front of a camera to ensure I don’t say the wrong words and keep my calm. I was conscious of my body language and made sure I didn’t look at the floor or in the wrong direction. I also didn’t want to have my notes in my hand in case they distracted me or took my focus to them. However, if I would have had those notes then I may have not said the incorrect words. If I was to do the interview again I would try not work myself up as much because as soon as the camera was off and the conversation wasn’t being filmed or assessed I went back to normal. In addition, I would try not to use as many fillers or panic mid sentence and let my facial expressions falter.

Finally, I feel as though my research was thorough in each scenario and I was well prepared for which ever scenario I was given. I believe which ever scenario I was to have been given my nerves would have been equally the same and next time I need to try and work on ways in which to calm myself and think about what words are leaving my mouth.
