Designing Your Home Office With the current situation of Covid-19 and people working from their homes. The home office has become ubiquitous. But when it comes to decor, people often overlook their home offices – even if they spend eight hours a day there. If you’re ready to give your home office a makeover, or if you’re in the process of converting one of your rooms into a home office, here are some elements to take into consideration when designing your home improvement plan. Your Desk Your desk may be your workstation, but that doesn’t mean you have to forego style. Forget the industrial look of a metal desk, and instead opt for furniture that is an extension of your home decor. You might love the richness of beautiful cherry wood, or you may like the minimalism and futuristic style of glass. Your Chair Embrace both comfort and style when selecting a chair for your home office. Storage The amount and type of storage space you will need depends upon how you utilize your home office. If you primarily use the space for Web browsing and paying bills, you won’t need advanced storage solutions. However, if your home office is your primary place of business, you may need the equivalent of drawers, cabinets, and bookshelves. Personal Touches Be sure to incorporate personal touches into your home office. A beautiful shade of paint, framed family photos, a small indoor fountain, and creative lighting can make it a pleasure to work from home. Hey all, Dani here.
We are over halfway through the year. Goodness gracious, where has the time gone. But also, can this nightmare year be over already? With everything happening it is making me even more anxious about the fact that Damian and I are supposed to get married in October. If the world keeps going on like it is…I don’t know how that is going to affect us. We’ve talked about different possibilities to get around gathering size restrictions and such, but…I don’t know. I get so anxious when around other people anymore, even people I know and used to hang out with regularly.
Anyway, it is the first Monday of the Month and that means it is once again time for a Calendar Girls post.
Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event that was started by Flavia and Melanie, but is now being hosted by Katie and Adrienne. They are all wonderful ladies, and you should check out their lovely blogs. Okay, so Katie is still on a brief hiatus for a few months, so for right now Adrienne and myself are all hosting Calendar Girls together.
So if you link back to Adrienne, and me, we can keep track of all the book picks and posts each month. Thanks, everyone!
First, more about the Calendar Girls. It is designed to ignite bookish discussions among readers, and was inspired by the 1961 Neil Sedaka song, Calendar Girl.
Just like the song, each month has a different theme. Each blogger picks their favorite book from the theme, and on the first Monday of the month reveals their pick in a Calendar Girls post. Make sure to post back to the hostess’s post, and both Katie and Adrienne will make a master list for the month. The master lists allow everyone to see the other Calendar Girls’ picks and to pop on over to their blogs. Thus, we all get to chat about books and even make some new friends!
Oh, and you don’t have to identify as female to join the Calendar Girls. We welcome readers of all types. So if this sounds like fun for you, join us in all of the fun bookish conversations.
Finally, our very own host-on-hiatus Katie achieved a bingo during the Calendar Girls Springtime Whirl, and she has selected our July theme.
The July theme is…
Embrace Your Geekness Day
Favorite Book With Geeky Characters
Thanks for picking an awesome theme this month Katie. I’m super excited about this one. For anyone who somehow doesn’t know this already…I’m a huge geek. If that hasn’t been obvious by me talking about both attending and working at conventions, and talking all the time about books, D&D, Magic the Gathering, manga, anime, TV shows, movies, etc…then hello. I am a geek, and I love all my wonderfully geeky passions.
So this month and its theme present a challenge for me, because I’m sure that I have a whole bunch of options for books with geeky characters. All right, I’m just going to browse my bookshelves and see what I can come up with. I’ll start by getting all my contenders together, so I don’t have to stare at all 12 of the bookcases in my bedroom for too long.
Whew so many options to choose from.
Would it be weird to pick a non-fiction book for this one? Because honestly, all of these are great, but if we’re talking about embracing your geekness, then there is really only one book…well, technically two books by the same author, that really stick out in my mind. So, you know what, any of the books I have on the contender list are great, and I definitely recommend all of them for the geek culture and geeky characters and adorableness. But I’m sticking with my gut decision on this one.
I have to give this month to Felicia Day, specifically for You’re Never Weird on the Internet, though her second book is also really cool, and it has a lot of creativity exercises and such. But her first book, a memoir of the fantastically geeky life she has had, really spoke to me, and continues to speak to me four years later.
Felicia took her drive and determination and paired it with her geeky interests to create a life where she gets paid to do the things she loves. So, she gets to write geeky web shows, play board games, live stream play video games, and talk about books and music and whatever topics interest her.
I dream of having that sort of life, one where I can get paid to work on projects that I love. I’m just lacking the proper work ethic and drive to actually make it happen. The obstacles always seem too big for me so I cower back to a safe corner, where I’m pretty much talking about geeky topics into a small crowd.
It has been great these past few years to find more and more fiction books with characters who play D&D and go to comic and anime and fandom conventions and who do cosplay, characters who are passionate about card games and board games and video games, and who freely talk to others about those passions. I am so happy to see myself and my friends reflected in books.
So I love being a geek. And I’m looking forward to more geeky characters and stories in the future.
All right, well that’s all from me for now. Be sure to check out the other Calendar Girls posts. I will be linking them down below as they get posted. I’ll be back soon with more bookish content.
Other Calendar Girls posts to check out:

Waddle You Do To Celebrate JiJi Day?
JiJi Day is coming on April 26!
JiJi is the beloved penguin in the ST Math software games. Every time a child demonstrates understanding of a math concept, JiJi crosses the screen, signaling success and leading the student to the next more challenging puzzle.
JiJi Day is an opportunity to celebrate and foster a school culture based on the principles associated with JiJi: perseverance through challenges, a love of learning and the thrill of success.
JiJi means many things to different students: a guide, a friend, someone to help overcome obstacles. We welcome you to celebrate JiJi Day with your students on Friday, April 26. There are a few ideas listed below, but please feel free to get creative!
JiJi will be roaming social media and sending out random celebration prizes - so be sure to post pictures of your celebration and tag @STMath (Twitter) and @JiJiMath (Facebook), or post to the ST Math Community Group (Facebook group).
JiJi Art and Writing Connections
Asking students to create is a great opportunity to extend learning and celebrate math.
The Really Big Numbers Club out of Robeson Elementary School in Champaign, Illinois created a JiJi mural using pixel charts! The possibilities for math questions and investigations are endless, and the creation gave students a great idea of what larger numbers (like 50,000) look and feel like!
We love how Hawes Elementary school in Huntington Beach, CA asked students to paint a watercolor of their favorite ST Math game and then write about their choice.
One of our classes did watercolors of their favorite ST Math game and will be writing their opinions to explain their choice! #stmath #art #writing #behawesome #hawesnation pic.twitter.com/f94nmwbBx6
— hawes principal (@hawesprincipal) April 11, 2019
Another guided prompt is the JiJi Day coloring page, which asks students to respond to the question, "How does JiJi help you keep trying?"
Whatever prompt you choose, be sure to share with us online and JiJi will respond!
See the Math Activity
Ask your detectives (students) to find mathematics in the world around them. E.g. geometric shapes in buildings, a floor tile that inspires interesting math conversation, an array of shoes in a closet, etc.
Last year, students found math in the shadows of playground equipment, on windows, in bookshelves, on game boards, on brick walls, on tile floors, on calendars and more!
You can see more examples and download the printable "see the math" activity.
JiJi Visual Sudoku
Make sudoku into a visual puzzle with JiJi! Practice visual pattern recognition, and logic and deduction during JiJi Day. Check out this free printable visual puzzle activity. There are three levels of difficulty included, ideal for kindergarten (easy) through 5th grade and beyond.
Build Math Culture on JiJi Day
Thank you for celebrating JiJi Day and building a positive school culture around mathematics!
Looking for more JiJi Day activity ideas? Browse the printables section on ST Math Central or create your own JiJi Day activity.
Please share how your students are celebrating JiJi on social media! Tag @STMath (Twitter) and @JiJiMath (Facebook), or post to the ST Math Community Group (Facebook group) to be eligible for random prize drawings. We can't wait to see your celebration!

Why I Chose remodel home
From unfolding apartments to clever remodels to creative rentals, these 10 tiny kitchens show that their owners and designers haven't just learned to cope with small spaces — they've embraced them. An assortment of old stools provides quirky charm in the kitchen of the Oregon farmhouse Durable concrete countertops from Cement Elegance pair with cabinets painted Simple White by Benjamin Moore Barn wood left from the ground installation covers a metal Ikea hood. A kitchen this large allows designers to really get creative with the layout as designer Kari Arendsen has here by wrapping the walls in white cabinets then developing a huge L-shaped island to supply prep space and a spot for the family to gather for quick meals. Kitchen Islands: Use that extra three square feet of space for an added work surface. If you curently have an L-shaped floorplan, consider corner kitchen drawers, or lazy Susans within your cabinets, to make awkward spots more functional. 10 Comments on "43 Extremely creative small kitchen design ideas" The white-tiled walls, along with brass hardware and a milk-glass chandelier, create the illusion of added sunlight. Although his clients requested a bank of open shelving, designer Grant K. Gibson added a single ledge to their galley kitchen "One shelf is easy and dynamic," he says. A FRESH York kitchen in a wine red from Fine Paints of Europe received a high-gloss coating that "helped the small space feel bigger," Nick Olsen says. This Is How To Remodel Your Small Bathroom Efficiently, Inexpensively. My bath is large with 2 sinks and good cabinet space. Together, your client and designers Michael Chen and Kari Anderson developed a distinctive unfolding” concept — a built-in cabinet that holds a closet, a desk and a bed, and divides the apartment into zones. On the far side of the kitchen, a wall-mounted wine rack and tall bookshelves benefit from wall space for storage. Food blogger Cara Eisenpress uses cute art and her prettiest canning experiments to add color and interest to her tiny Brooklyn kitchen. To open your small square bathroom and create a smooth traffic flow, you can position your shower or vanity in the corner. Another common size you'll find in small bathrooms is 6' x 6'. Although this square floor plan meets the minimum dependence on a full bathroom, I'd recommend using it as a third-quarter bathroom. Modern Dining Area Makeover That’s Fresh and Fetching
This modern dining area makeover is absolutely adorable. This space is especially fetching with it’s hand-painted wall pattern, cordless shades and the pink door! It also coordinates beautifully with the living area next to it in this small home.
Sarah Wissinger of The Surznick Common Room created a dining space that’s comfortable and appealing and inviting.
Fresh and Modern Dining Area Makeover
Our dining area was in desperate need of some TLC. My fiancé Nick and I actually hadn’t touched this space since purchasing our home last summer. Seeing as it’s right as you walk in our front door, we knew it was time to turn it into a room we loved.
The Dining Area Before the Makeover
Our house is a small mid-century ranch without a formal dining room, so what we consider our “dining area” is actually part of our living room. We’ve gone back and forth over what to do with this space— round table or rectangular? White wall or colored? We wanted it to feel like a dedicated dining space with a punch of personality, but still feel similar in style to the living room since they share the same space.
The Dining Table
As soon as I saw the Conrad Antique Natural dining table from Home Decorators Collection, I knew it was meant to be the table for our modern dining area makeover. We’d been using a flimsy table that was much too small for the space and we needed a major upgrade. From the beautiful wood to the tapered mid-century legs, this table just felt right. After we decided on that, everything else just fell into place!
Window Casings and Paint
Our first step in the makeover was to remove the old, reddish trim from the front door and floor. None of the windows in our house is encased, so Nick started taking measurements to add window casing and install new floor, door and window trim.
While he was doing all of the measuring and cutting, I gave the main wall a fresh coat of paint, using BEHR Premium Plus Eggshell in untinted Ultra Pure White, and started thinking up a fun pattern. I decided on a basketweave-type pattern, which I hand-painted with BEHR Premium Plus Eggshell in Summer House, using an L-shaped piece of cardboard periodically as a guide. It took me two afternoons to complete the wall, about 10 hours total.
Cordless Window Shades
After the painting and trim was finished, we added new cordless window shades, also from the Home Decorators Collection. While we love to look out this large window to our front porch, we wanted to add a window treatment that would look sleek and stylish when closed. This cordless shade fit the bill!
We also added two white floating shelves to house our frequently used cookbooks, plants, and other tchotchkes we love.
Setting Up the Dining Table
Finally it was time for the main attraction of our modern dining area makeover— our Conrad table!
We ordered the dining table online and received it just a few days later.
When we opened it up, it was even more beautiful in person. It’s made of high quality mango wood, so we added placemats at each seat to keep it protected. It is far and away the nicest dining table we’ve ever had— we’ve received endless compliments on it from friends and family. We know we’ll have it for many, many years to come.
To continue the mid-century theme for the modern dining room makeover we added Eames-style dining chairs. The contrast of the white chairs against the wood table really makes the table stand out as the star of the show.
The Pink Front Door and the Living Area
Our front door has been painted with Pink Carnation semi-gloss from Glidden for some time now, but seeing it against the blue basketweave wall really makes me love it more. The pop of pink really ties the dining area to the rest of the living room, where we have a pink rug, pink and green art and color-coded bookshelves.
I’m so glad that these spaces finally feel unique, yet cohesive. We couldn’t be happier with our new dream dining area! Hope you love it too!

Browsing Bloggers Bookhselves | Browsing For Books
So you may remember that last month I did a similarly titled post with Sarah which I really enjoyed. This is the second time I’ve been able to do a post like this and I love it! Today I’m feauturing Cerys’ bookshelves! Don’t forget to stop by her blog to browse my books.
Do you want to know the creation of this collab? Shortly after I broke my wrist I put out a call to guest post with other bloggers more and one of the lovely people who reached out was Sarah @BookHookedNook. After a bit of talking we decided upon a collab kind of post, which is this creation.
We shared photographs of our (main) bookshelves with each other so the other person could “browse” them and pick out books they’d recommend, books they suggest to avoid, or books they’d love to read.
As I really enjoyed this process if anyone would like to partner up with me and do these posts together please contact me. I’m best replying via Twitter DMs or emails. I hadn’t anticipated having a queue of these posts ready but I do and I’m still thrilled to do more so this will become a somewhat regular feature.
Cerys’ Bookshelves
As I mentioned today I’ll be browsing Cerys’ bookshelves. First of all I want to say I love her lil decorations; plants, badges, funkos, and a coaster.
I’ll use these emoji’s as a code: 📚 – books to add to my tbr | 📖 – read and recommend | 💔 – do not recommend
Tumblr media
📖Everless by Sara Holland [purchase] I really enjoyed this book as it was one of two that got me out of a reading slump. Also the fact its only part of a duology really makes it better imo. No more waiting for book #2349!
📚 The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo [purchase] & Onyx and Ivory by Mindee Arnett [purchase] & Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl [purchase] Yes sorry I am the Trash Queen who owns all of Leigh’s work and still hasn’t read any, and I also have Onyx & Ivory from a past FL that I really should read. However, Neverworld Wake is a totally new to me book that I’ve seen the cover of and its so pretty I gotta give it a try, right?
💔The Fault in Our Stars by John Green I really tried with this book but it just kind of fell very flat for me. I had barely any interest in it and mostly wish it had followed suit of the book they were reading (that had no ending) as I think that would’ve been a much more interesting concept.
Tumblr media
📖The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black [purchase] & Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan [purchase] I love these three books so gorram much! I even convinved LGBT+ Book Club to read GoPaF this month so I’m excited to hear what they think.
📚Nevernight by Jay Kristoff [purchase] & Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody [purchase] I finally got a copy of Nevernight so yes I know I need to read ASAP and I promise I’ll at the very least read it this year – yes I know you’re very surprised I haven’t read it. DotBC is also one that I’ve been looking at for a while and I’ll be getting a copy in two weeks!
📖The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater [purchase] & The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon [purchase] The Raven Cycle was the first read-along that I hosted with Books and Tea so it holds a special place in my heart, and The Raven King was the first book I ever tabbed! I loved it. Okay, its kind of cheating that I included Priory but what I have read I love.
💔So many books by Cassie Clare I think 2019 is the year that I’ve finally accepted I wont be reading Cassie’s books. I’ve never tried, its simply just theres so many and I do not have the room for them. Sorry love.
📚The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton [purchase] & This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada [purchase] & 📚Shadow of the Fox by Julia Kagawa [purchase] & The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff [purchase] *sweats in a great big panic* Look at all these fabulous books I really want to read, plus a whole lot more of these shelves but listing everything was getting embarressing. Which should I prioritise?
📖Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao [purchase] & Caraval by Stephanie Garber [purchase] Forest was another BnT readalong we did and I really enjoyed this, the whole experience was one I loved. Whilst I’m not a super fan of Caraval I did really enjoy it when I read it & its what made me meet and be friends with Amy & Beth!
Tumblr media
📖Every single book by V.E Schwab [purchase] & Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer [purchase] I have my own Schwab shelf (though its not in the pictures Cerys has because I recently moved it). I love her work so much, it does everything I want amazing books to do. Then in contrast we have Twilight which is not great writing but I’m gonna recommend it because its the series that got me back into reading during high school.
📚📖📚📖📚📖📚
Gosh this post ended up much longer than my first, or it feels that way when I’m writing it at 1am ahha. I tried to keep it to the point as I realised there was a good handful of books that I wanted to include. The books that I’ve reviewed I placed the reviews as the book titles instead of the Goodreads page so you could further read my thoughts on why I liked them.
Did I skip over any of your favourite books?
Which of these books would you recommend?

Yesterday (or at least the time I’m writing this) I got to spend the day with Imi from Imi Reviews Books. It was a lovely day but I also instilled some fright into the poor girl.
She got to look at my bookshelves, all of them, (not just the ones I post for Browsing Bloggers Bookshelves) and talk about the books. As two book lovers do.
