TAZ Balance Episode 31: The Crystal Kingdom Chapter 3

Written 02 May 2025, shortly after relistening, having listened to the entire Balance arc some time ago.

The three walk through the elevator museum, Magnus asking Angus to dig up what he can on the Philosopher’s Stone, the singing crystal and the golem without letting Lucas hear, and seeing the primitive designs of Lucas Miller’s grandfather, getting more sophisticated until Lucas’ mother took over and the designs become more up to date. A few cockroaches scurry around; Magnus and Taako squash two, but a third escapes. As they continue, they find the “elevator of the future”, a high-tech looking elevator mounted above a glass jar with a miniature model of the city of Neverwinter. Lucas explains that his future-elevator has been left in demo mode and is drawing power from the lab’s systems, and if they run the demo cycle it will shut down. They just have to get in and go through the three minute demo.

Taako absolutely refuses to get into another elevator, after the one in Goldcliff was attacked by vines, so Magnus and Merle get in while Taako hides in the pocket spa. Taako can see that as the elevator “descends”, it shrinks, until it can slide into the miniature model of Neverwinter. Magnus and Merle suffer no ill-effects; they find the model is of a vision of the future of Neverwinter, with battle wagons and tall buildings, and a mobile of airships. But a cockroach has got in, and they are now snack-size. They fight it back, at various points getting acidic saliva on them, Taako only pretending to try to help, and Merle burning a fourth level spell slot to cast Banish, which doesn’t last long enough for the three minute demo cycle to complete. Griffin also mentions that if they hadn’t squished the cockroaches earlier, they would have been fighting several of them. Lucas extols the virtues of his inventions, while Magnus berates him for not keeping his lab clean, and the cockroach returns in time to get another few attacks in, before Magnus rips its mandibles off. They depart the miniature city as the demo ends, the elevator lets them out and deactivates, and the lab judders a little as Lucas reroutes the power to keep it lifting for longer.

After finishing their walk through the elevator museum, Merle casting Prayer of Healing on himself and Magnus in the process, they enter another airlock. This gives them the option of either Radiation Ventilation Maintenance, or Li’l Genius BuddyBot RnD. After quite a bit of faffing around, they chose BuddyBot. This room has a small, cute robot, with a screen displaying an emoticon face – a sleeping one. It would be adorable, except that the room and robot are all absolutely covered with scorch marks. Lucas explains that the BuddyBot, named HodgePodge, is designed to be an educational toy to help encourage kids to be smarter. The scorches are just because he’d been testing how resistant to damage HodgePodge is. Magnus sets his belt dial to resist fire damage. HodgePodge wakes up and starts its spiel – Lucas tells them to play along so he can shut it down. It asks if they want child, adult or master setting, and Taako asks for child. It gives them several categories, and they select magic. It asks them to name a spell; Merle does so, but HodgePodge announces it has scanned them and determined they are not children, so it goes on to master setting. They then accidentally select spelling, and are asked to spell Aarakocra – Taako gets it completely wrong, and HodgePodge operates the RnD settings to blast a bit of fire everywhere. Taako dodges, Magnus takes half damage, but Merle takes it all. They have to try again, and they choose problem solving. HodgePodge gives them a logic puzzle, and if I wasn’t at work when I was listening, I probably would’ve jotted the clues down to try solving it myself, because I like logic puzzles – yes, I’m a nerd, I write a DnD actual play review blog, of course I’m a nerd. Magnus makes a wild, completely wrong guess, HodgePodge gives them another chance, and they work it out properly and get the right answer – HodgePodge is mildly condescending about it. It then tries to get them to do another test, and Magnus attacks it with his axe, only to get more fire. So Taako calls Angus, and asks him to listen in on the question and give them the answer. They end up having to spell Aarakocra again, and Angus spells it out for them, but HodgePodge detects the magic communication, and does something that breaks the connection. It’s just the four of them now.

Aside from the messing around with choosing the BuddyBot door, this was a brilliant episode. The “you have to interact with my creations so I can shut them down and keep powering the lab’s levitation system” is a little contrived, but it works, especially given Angus had previously given Lucas’ profile as being a bit reckless, so it makes sense that he’d have all these things running all the time. And what they’re encountering makes sense both from a, this is something in the lab, sense, and in a, this is an obstacle to overcome, sense. The miniature city and protype elevator, with a cockroach that’s deadly once you’re miniaturized. A quiz bot that has managed to access fire jets. It all just works.

Taako refusing to engage with the future elevator also worked really well, because given what happened in Goldcliff it does seem quite reasonable to say Taako now hates and fears elevators. Their responses when been quizzed seem to fit pretty well as well, because…it’s not that they’re not smart, it’s that they tend not to apply themselves to smarts.

This one just all works so well.
