Call It Love

This is not the typical cross-lovers story. Shim Woo Joo - in her quest to avenge her family from her late father's mistress (and later wife) who took away their home - she meets Han Dong Jin (the woman's son). And in her attempt at revenge, she falls in love.

Even if the story sounds like the typical storyline, the execution is different. Here she has a male-best friend who is just a friend. There is no best friend-in love with her in silence troupe. They are truly best friends and he falls in love with her older sister. It explores what happens when a parent leaves home to be with someone else from different perspectives. Hae Sung (the eldest daughter) is always dating the wrong men but never gives up on being with someone. Yet, when she finds out that the man she is seeing is actually married, she feels horrible about herself because she has sworn never to do that. She knows how painful that is. Woo Joo took on the weight of the house, not going to school and working. She is the strong one, the one who takes charge, the one that suffers in silence while her older sister can play and her younger brother too. She is the one with the consuming anger, the one that knows the face of her father's lover, the one who confronted him and watched him leave with the other woman. And she is the one who seeks revenge when the woman throws them out of their home. Ji Goo was too little when it happened. He only remembers his father as a loving man. He never saw him with another woman, and he lives a pretty much carefree life. Their mother is also an elegant woman, who doesn't lower herself in front of the mistress or her unfaithful husband. I liked that too. I can understand their pain, I could relate to Woo Joo in many ways.

I could also see Dong Jin and how his mother's actions also affected his life. How he carried the shame of her unethical behavior, how he has to deal with the consequences of her actions. These are young people that are living with the hurt and pain, and I liked watching their healing process. I liked how the story unfolded, leaving cliché out of the equation. It felt real and its bittersweetness, mixed with the sweetness of hope, balancing the mood of the story.

I truly loved the story and recommend it.

Y/n: Onew...what are you doing? You asked, as you pulled away and covered your lips with your fingers.

Time skip

It was the next day, and you were hiding in the private plane of of the SHINee members waiting to surprise them all.

Onew: When's the plane taking off?

Y/n: Not without me. You said, startling them and making Minho scream.

Key: W...what are you doing here?

Taemin: Very.

Minho: Why are you in the plane?

Y/n: Well, this is the place I needed to be. Your manager said I could go on tour with you for a while. Are you okay with this?

Taemin: Here y/n/n. Take the seat next to Minho. He spoke, as he gave you a sweet smile as he headed to the open seat next to Onew who was reading a book.

A while later, the plane was airborne and everyone exept you and Minho were sleeping. You were busy twiddling with your thumbs until Minho grabbed your hands, steadying them.

Minho: Mind telling me what's going on?

Y/n: What's going on? Nothings going on, why would there be something going on? You asked fast, as you mumbled.

Minho: Because you always twiddle with your thumbs, talk fast and mumble random things when you get nervous. Now, tell me what's this all about.

Y/n: I...i didn't plan to tell you like this.

Minho: I don't care, tell me what's bothering you.

Y/n: Well...i wouldn't say bother perse...more like scared of what might happen.

Minho: You'll never know unless you try.

Y/n: Your right. You replied, as you grabbed Minho by his collar and kissed him.

You were a backup dancer for the group on their new music video, and for their tour. You've known Key, since you met at the auctions.

You auditioned to be a dancer and got the job, while they became a band.

When the terrible tragedy of Jongyung's death, became known to the world you found it very hard to overcome that one obstacle that hurt you so much.

You became very close to them all, but Jongyung was like a older brother to you and you loved him so much for all he has done, and how he impacted your life in his own way. And Key, Key made you feel normal again.

2 weeks later

There was a loud knock on your door, scaring you from the show you were watching. Confused of who it might be, you looked through the peephole of the door to see Key standing there.

Y/n: Key, what are you doing here? You asked, as he looked down at the ground biting his lip.

Key: I...i...i can't take it anymore.

Y/n: Key...what's wrong? You asked, as you held his face in your hands.

Key: I miss him. He whimpered, as he started crying.

He wrapped his arms around you, as he cried in your arms further. Pulling away, you took his hand in yours as you pulled him into your apartment and to the couch.

Y/n: I know you miss him, I miss him too. But...at least your not going through this alone...you have so many people who are going through this too and all you need to do i-

You were gut off as he grappled and kissed you passionately, the kiss was hard and rough and only lasted for a few short seconds before he pulled away.

Key: I...im sorry.

Y/n: Have you been drinking?

Key: A little. I just...i really don't want to be alone. He said, as he looked down at his hand that was holding yours.

Y/n: You don't need to be. You replied, as you left and moved to his cheek.

Key didn't say anything as he just launched forward, and kissed you just like before. He pushed you down onto the couch, and started to take off his shirt. Once he removed his shirt, he leaned down and started to kiss your neck while unbuttoning your shirt.

Y/n: Wait...stop. You said, as you pushed him up and sitting where you once were before.

Key: Did I do something wrong?

Y/n: No. I...i just want to make sure that this is really what we both want.

Key: It is. He whispered, as he leaned in to kiss you yet again.

Time skip to morning

Groaning you stretched your arms high, and felt a hard chest next to you.

Key: Morning. He said, as he brushed some hair from your face.

Y/n: M...morning. You said, as you sat up while holding the silk covers to your chest.

Key: Listen...about last night-

Y/n: Oh, no. You said covering your face with your hands. Please don't.

Key: Don't what?

Y/n: Please, don't tell me it was a mistake.

Key: N...no. That wasn't what I was going to say.

Y/n: It's not?

Key: No. He said, as he pulled your hands away form your face. He kissed your knuckles, and smiled as he intertwined your fingers. I was going to say that...i...well...i love you.

Y/n: What?

Key: I-

You cut him off with a sweet kiss, as a smile appeared on your face while kissing him.

Y/n: I love you too. You whispered, against his lips where you kissed him again.

Taemin (he confesses)

You ran down the hallway of the high-school, avoiding some students as you made your way towards the cafeteria.

Rumor spread fast that an argument turned into a fight, and you heard that Teamin was involved.

Finally reaching the cafeteria, you saw that no one was hurt, and that they still were just arguing. But when the bully started stalking smack about you, he got angrier.

Bully: She's nothing but a little puppy dog, that follows you around...probably hoping to get something out of you.

Taemin: That's enough.

Bully: Or what? He asked, as he pulled him roughly.

Running forward, you tried to get the bully off of Taemin when the bully shoved you off of him making you fall to the floor. Looking up, Taemin saw your chapped lip and full on rage came from him. He punched the bully to the ground, standing over him as he pulled him up slightly and spoke aloud.

Taemin: Don't hurt the woman I love. He said, not realizing that the entire cafeteria heard him.

Y/n: Taemin...is that true? You asked, as you took his arm gently away from the bully. Come on, let's go.

Taemin: Didn't say anything as he followed after you, to the stairs where no one was in sight. And you pulled him down to sit next to you.

Taemin: Y/n...i-

You cut him off as you kissed him, he was hesitant at first but slowly eased into the kiss. As he kissed you back.

Taemin: I'm sorry for scaring you like that, I shouldn't have gotten into a fight.

Y/n: No...you shouldn't have, but you were defending me...which was pretty cute. You smiled, as you took his hand in yours.

Last week, Jeong Gi Seop finally recognized his feelings for Kim Jin Woo when he saw the way he was looking at Jin Woo. Jin Woo spiraled on his own, and when he turned his phone back on learned that Gi Seop had traveled to see his dad. Meanwhile, Balgeum had the most embarrassing experience possible when he misread a coupon on his date with Ji In Ho, and also had to turn down an expensive gift.

Episode 7: The gift I wanted to receive

Curious what document is so important that we have multiple people hopping on trains to get it. Ah, trains.

Oh right, Gi Seop saw Jin Woo with Kang Hye Jin on the swings during the first snow and misunderstood.

Gi Seop, I appreciate the energy here, but don’t tear up someone’s work.

Mhmm, and now you’re embarrassed.

Unsurprised that Jin Woo is claiming he tore the papers.

This boy loves his lists. It may be late, but I’m glad Jin Woo’s dad recognizes that he let this huge gulf grow between him and his son.

Gi Seop’s face is definitely more attractive when he’s looking at Jin Woo thoughtfully or fondly. He’s mostly looked confused for most of the show.

My boy Balgeum is not doing well.

Damn, ending on the confession not being accepted kinda hurt. On the one hand I’m glad Gi Seop can potentially say no, but on the other hand he’s been flirting with this man for weeks.

Korean speakers, can y’all check in with me about what Choi Balgeum meant about becoming a better person? I feel kinda bummed that he thinks he’s a bad person because his parents got saddled with debt.

Final Verdict: 7, This is an Easy Watch as a BL. I really struggled while watching the first six episodes of this show because I felt old internalized homophobia stirring in the reasons Kim Jin Woo and Choi Balgeum were holding back in their relationships, and this is becoming something I am having a harder time with BL flirting with lately. It feels like multiple shows in close succession try to straddle this line between the bubble of BL land where everyone is potentially queer and the real world where there are consequences for being queer. I don’t think this show was as elegant about it as Our Dating Sim and so it won’t become something I return to frequently because it created a low-level dissonance for me the entire time (and I also feel kinda sad that the sides didn’t get as much as I wanted). However, I really liked the flavor of the drama between Choi Balgeum and Ji In Ho. I thought it was a really attractive show to watch with good performances. I also think Kim Sung Hyeon was really compelling to watch as Kim Jin Woo. I think he’s extremely talented and has excellent control of his expressions and body to consistently contextualize what his character is feeling.

I made this because the past parts are told out of order and I wanted to pin down the timeline

Tae-seong is in 9th Grade (14 ish years old):

His grandmother dies, his mother sets it up so he can live alone. Director Choi Ji-hoon prevents his mother from getting off the plane.

Tae-seong 16/17 years old:

Director Choi Ji-hoon harasses him about becoming an actor. At this point no one knows the identity of his mother.

He watches his mom's movie in an empty theatre, sees Han-byeol there crying

He asks Director Choi Ji-hoon to make him more famous than his mother

Last Year of High School (most likely):

Tae-seong joins Starforce, switches high schools, and meets Lee Yun-Wo.

Tae-seong and Han-byeol are in university:

At some point he does one or multiple group projects with Han-byeol (no wonder she hates him so much if he didn't pull his weight)

They watch a movie together

Tae-seong debuted when he was about 20, so during this time. He is already famous enough that his offer to be on the advertisements every year is worth something

(Han-byeol said Tae-seong is her senior, but they are the same age and graduated at the same time. Since she was crying about her grades, she might have entered a year late and since he was working it took him an extra year to finish)

6 years before the beginning of the show (2016):

Tae-seong says he's dating his co-star, right after Han-byeol thinks that he may like her. She cries while writing the press release.

Their friend/colleague Lee Yun-Wu commits suicide. His manager quits and opens the Organic Bar. Jo Gi-bum defies her boss to support Han-byeol at the funeral.

(The subtitles say that the crazy lady housekeeper started working for Tae-seong 3 years ago, but given that it's implied Yun-wu just died, she must have started working for him shortly after the suicide)

Oh My God. I freaking LOVED THIS SHOW. The acting was amazing. All Main Actors delivered but I have to give it up to the 3 Main Leads Most Especially PARK JI HOON.

Some how I started watching and could not stop. I literally binge watched this on accident. And now that I hear there is a PART 2 I simply can't wait. No it's not BL but with my BL mind I did think HONG KYUNG (he play Bum Seok) went out of his mind because he fell for CHOI HYUN WOOK (he played Ahn Soo Ho) because his change came after the girl came between them. He said as much.

But it was hard to hate him because he was going through it. Bullied at school beaten at home. He never had anyone on his side until Ahn Soo Ho. Even though he was the cause of his take down. His regret was palpable.

Synopsis

Opinion

This is a very good series, I binge watched it in a few days. I loved the queen! How strong, resourceful, and independent she was. I loved all the characters, especially the queen and prince Seongnam. I also loved how the king was very supportive of her. The series had a lot of different topics, from motherhood to sexuality. It's a drama series. There are no gore or sex scenes. I recommend this series to anyone who likes history dramas.

My summer revisiting K-dramas

The summer might not be over yet, but my summer break is days from ending. I go back to work on Monday so I won't be able to binge watch k-dramas like I've done these couple of weeks. I've been revisiting dramas that I love and haven't seen in a while and it has felt like seeing a friend I hadn't seen in a long time.
