#But this particular method of indexing leaves a lot to be desired

Idk why every time I have a project that involves using the Register of the Great Seal for something even slightly more complex than looking up a single isolated charter, I always have a lovely plan where I think it will only take me a couple of hours to go in, check the index, and take the numbers I need down. And then I end up having to skimread the whole damn volume.
#No I know why#It's because the index is fucked up that's why#All due respect to those Victorian and Edwardian lads who went to the tremendous trouble of compiling all these sources#But this particular method of indexing leaves a lot to be desired#Does NOT have everything I need in it#And by the time you realise that some lands might pop up where least expected you start to convince yourself it would be safer#Just to read the whole thing#It's 800 pages long#I have been at this since 4 and I'm not even an eighth of the way through#Would be much quicker if I had the physical volume but it's a very old rare book so the library have it under strict control#Fortunately of course it HAS been digitised which is fantastic#Lots of sources for mediaeval Scottish history that were compiled into printed editions in the nineteenth century have been digitised#They are very easy to get ahold of and in my biased opinion it is easier to do online primary source research for Scotland than England#But 800 pages staring at a screen (which is NOT a format I can easily retain information from even if it didn't make my eyes hurt)#Having to physically scroll down the page rather than just flip a page#Is just not ideal#And this is the only volume in the series which is on Hathi rather than Internet Archive and personally I find indexes more difficult to us#On Hathi than internet archive#Anyway#That's how you end up making the bad decision to work your way through an 800 page volume and make yourself go blind#Just to find some charters#But I've already sunk several hours into this so can't give up now! I always vastly underestimate the amount of time it takes too#Also a certain degree of Ill as well. Like I feel I have to Suffer For My Craft-suffering being back problems and 19th century antiquarians#Alright this is officially the most boring rant I have ever had

Princess, part 8
[This story is a prequel, set several years before The Fall of Doc Future, when Flicker is 16.  Links to some of my other work are here.  Updates are theoretically biweekly–going to try to get the next one out by mid-March.]
Previous: Part 7
Journeyman ran his fingers through his hair and sighed as he looked at the picture Flicker sent to his handcomp.       "Yep, that's her," he said.  "Dr. Reinhart has a rep of knowing a lot about how minds are put together--and how to take them apart.  She seems to be effectively immune to mental influence and hostile probability manipulation--no, I don't know how she manages that--and I've heard enough complaints to believe that she can mess up Diviners and Seers just by being near what they're trying to see.  Not sure about Oracles.  Also, she's hard to kill.  If she's willing to help you, I doubt she'd be a weak point."       "That sounds good.  Except that the Database says her specialty is mind control.  But I guess she concentrates on defense?  That part wasn't clear."       "A lot about her isn't clear," said Journeyman.  "She is very good at using fear, though.  General opinions I hear about her are mixed.  I have connections, and while I keep them private, the general idea isn't a secret--I swap gossip, assistance, and so forth, move things around, and link people with what they need, all fairly quietly.  Dr. Reinhart clearly has connections, but nobody knows how they work.  She can show up somewhere, have coffee with a few folks, and sometimes everything stays quiet, and sometimes all hell breaks loose.  Odd accidents, fits of madness, sudden unexplained deaths from no obvious cause, and occasionally 'Blood--blood everywhere!'  And afterwards the details of what happened don't always add up.  Except usually some grim entrenched problem has disappeared.  That part is acknowledged, but she still really puts people on edge.  Oh, and there are rumors that she's seriously annoyed several intelligence agencies, but they're still trying to hire or co-opt her.  Jumping Spider would know more about that than me."       "Well, I needed to talk to Jumping Spider anyway."  Flicker frowned.  "Anything else?"       "I don't doubt Dr Reinhart's competence to advise you about social interaction."  Journeyman looked down.  "Motivation, methods, side effects?  That's over my head, but I would expect some warnings from your AI."       "Why?  Just her reputation?"       "Well... I know Doc is twitchy about mind control, and Dr. Reinhart apparently has issues with his methods.  And the spy stuff."       "She has a negative threat index--that means she's helping.  Doc is pragmatic about that."       "Up to a point."  Journeyman spread his hands.  "Anyway, that's what I can tell you.  Hope it helps."       "Yes."  Flicker sped up to virtual type a response to Dr. Reinhart, then slowed back down again.  "There.  She's traveling, and pretty inflexible about privacy, so it will be at least a few days before I can meet her, regardless."       She stood up from the high speed interface station and glided over to stop in front of Journeyman where he sat on the couch.  He watched her warily.       "Thank you," she said, and paused.  "I'm willing to at least consider rescheduling Speedtest, but I don't want to argue about it right now.   You don't feel safe here and you probably need sleep.  How much did you get last night?"       He shrugged.  "A few hours before you woke me up.  None since."       "Then get sleep, consult your Diviners or whatever, and we can talk more tomorrow."       "Might take a while to find anybody.  If I even can.  Tracking down Diviners is rarely easy."  He looked away.  "And Flicker?  I don't want to argue about it at all.  I'll send what I find to the Database.  Argue with Doc, or Jumping Spider, or Jetgirl, or whoever you need to.  Not me."       "I don't..."  Flicker stopped and swallowed.  "Argue isn't the right word.  It's just the one that sounded human to me.  And my anger isn't really at you, that's just where I attach it.  I think there's something wrong with my human emulation."       Journeyman shook his head.  "No.  Humans make mistakes, and they get angry, and no one should expect anything different.  Least of all me.  This isn't something we can solve.  Sometimes you can't get from where you are to where you want to be."       "And what I want is the problem."       He waved his arms.  "No!  I'm the problem.  I thought I could still finesse a way through, despite everything stacked against it, and I. Was. Wrong.  And that's why I have to go."       "Partner..."  She stopped again.  "Damn.  Having an emotional reaction to that word."       "...Yeah."  He blinked then raised his hand.  "I'm sorry I don't have any magic words for you.  Primum non nocere is all I've got left."       Flicker pulled off her glove and reached out to complete their fingertip touch.       "Take care," he said.       She couldn't find anything to say.  So she just nodded.  Journeyman took a deep breath and teleported out.       A faint whirl of disturbed air, then nothing.       Flicker looked around the room.  It felt far emptier than was reasonable.       *****       Evening back home, pre-dawn in Kenya.  Flicker didn't want to wake up Jonathan or his family, but Chaser was awake and running to greet her as soon as she slowed down.  Flying tackle and friend bites and his ridiculously tiny meow, and they played chase dance and dangle the fuzzy toy the way he liked.  Then he flopped down on her feet and purred as she held him.       Chaser wasn't her cat.  He wasn't anyone's cat.  He was his own cheetah.  But Flicker had rescued him as a kitten, taken him far away from the lions that had killed his siblings.  It wasn't clear what had killed their mother, but life was full of perils for cheetahs, especially when they had to share shrinking habitat with lions.  He stayed with the family of a park ranger, on land Flicker had purchased next to a wildlife reserve.  Extravagant?  Maybe, but it wasn't hard to figure out why she'd identified so hard with an orphan who had social problems with other cheetahs.       Time zones made visits awkward, and they still hoped to reintroduce him back to the wild someday, but in the meantime she could hold him close, and whisper that he was a good cat.  He purred and didn't mind her tears from trying to accept a present that had crumbled unexpectedly, and a hoped for future that had been a mirage.  He didn't judge, didn't care whether she was human or not; she was just his fast friend.       An hour under a slowly brightening sky made the world a slightly better place.  Still not good, but better.       *****       Later evening.  Ghosting through the darkness at 500 kilometers per second.  Flicker was moving fast enough to be effectively invisible, but slow enough to leave no traces behind her.  It fit her mood--she didn't particularly want to be anywhere.  But there was someone she needed to talk to at Doc's.       Superhuman speed implied a superhuman ability to interrupt.  So Flicker and Doc had worked out a protocol that allowed for degrees of urgency and desire to avoid disruption.  'Open door' had a particular implication because of Flicker's dislike of them.  It was a way for Doc to indicate that she could join a meeting in progress, but it would be polite to wait and listen quietly until an appropriate pause, absent an emergency.       At Doc's.  Flicker entered the recovery room next to one of the med labs, sat in one of the chairs, and slowed down.  She didn't say anything.       Jumping Spider was sitting up with her left leg extended.  Something complicated covered the knee--it looked like one of Doc's support and monitoring minibots.  Doc was frowning at a large display showing... Not her leg.  Her left jump boot.  Which wasn't in the room, though her spare pair was.  A quick Database check showed her main boots were down in one of the big fabbers in Doc's workshop being repaired.       "...crash cushioning cells seem to have handled the landing fine," Doc was saying, "and at least blunted the impact. Still..."       "They did the job," said Jumping Spider.  "Sometimes a gust of wind hits you at just the wrong time, and one did, right after I'd hopped off the roof."       "The fourth story roof.  Over icy concrete.  In a blizzard."       "Yeah, it was Tuesday.  Wednesdays are overpasses.  Hi Flicker."       "Hello.  What happened?"       "Nothing major.  I banged up my knee a little yesterday and used the crash guards on my left boot.  Doc's going to give the boots a checkup, recalibrate the jump jets, and--" She turned her head to look at Doc. "Not stay up all night making minor improvements.  Right?"       Doc raised an eyebrow.  "I am most definitely going to run unit tests after the tuneup and the data updates."       "That will only take an hour or two.  And Flicker wants to talk to me anyway."       Flicker didn't understand how Doc's relationship with Jumping Spider worked, except that it did.  It was close, but they usually saw each other only a few times a month.  Jetgirl described it as 'co-conspirators with benefits.'  There had to be more than that after almost two decades, but Flicker didn't get how most more typical relationships functioned either.       "All right," said Doc.  He nodded to Flicker.  "I'll give the two of you privacy, then."       "Thank you," said Flicker.       Doc must have read her expression--or more likely her 'No personal small talk currently welcome' Database flag--and left the room without further comment.  Jumping Spider pulled the swivel arm table with a Database interface over so she could use it.       "We're secure--privacy locked," she said.  "Yes, from Doc too.  Check."       DASI was insistent on leaving up the warning flag on Flicker's visor about limiting Doc's access in his own HQ, but she confirmed the privacy lock.       "Verified," said Flicker.       "Now we can talk," said Jumping Spider.  "My knee isn't much worse than usual.  But I heard you are.  Doc says you seem determined to push a hazardous test series on short notice and you don't look happy.  Did Journeyman just turn you down or did you manage something stupider?"       Jumping Spider could be tactful.  She usually chose to be blunt with Flicker.  They weren't friends, but Flicker tried to listen to her advice, because she was right far too often to ignore.       "Both," said Flicker.  "I don't think I have a partner anymore."       "You don't think?  Want to tell me what happened?"       "No.  But I should.  I'd been pushing patrols for a while and was off duty yesterday when I got an alert that Hermes was back..."       Flicker summarized the mess of the last two days, with a pause while Jumping Spider watched the vid of the handover of Hermes at the Box.  It was even less pleasant to explain than she'd expected.  She had to bounce up to speed mind several times to maintain her composure while staying on track.  Jumping Spider said she would save any questions for later, which was just as well.       "...and after he ported out," Flicker finished, "I did memory assimilation work, then visited with Chaser until the Database told me you were available.  It's been a long day."       "It sure has," said Jumping Spider.  "The Database security AI called me for help.  It needed a human other than Doc with the right clearance level bad.  You ignored warnings, bypassed the blocks, and managed to set off a cross-domain priority conflict and a legacy conflict this afternoon.  Why settle for one crisis at a time when you can have more?"       "Um.  Those were for something that actually helped."       "A book that flaunts that it's full of traps in the dedication and you're sure it helped?"       "Well... I'm running sims."       "Yeah.  You do that."  Jumping Spider smiled sardonically.       "Why was the cross-domain priority conflict so bad, anyway?"       "Because the AI was forbidden from telling Doc about something in one domain, and required to tell him in another--and he's normally the one that resolves those conflicts.  And you were no help, because you were causing it.  So it had to call me, because I was the next person in line with clearance.  I figured I'd better drop what I was doing to deal with what you stirred up.  Doc was already on the way to get me when you sent your message about Dr. Reinhart--his flying car does come in handy sometimes.  And I have heard of her.  But I need to do some Database poking before I'm willing to make a judgement, so are you up for doing some tedious but necessary work to help me fill in a few holes?  It would make up for what I had to drop, and let me test something."       "Depends.  What kind of work?"       "Spying.  Under the direction of someone who knows what she's doing.  That's why most of it will be boring.  But it will also involve a lot of purposeful running around, which I'm guessing you could use.  You've amply demonstrated how fast you go stir-crazy.  I want to double check some clues to whatever was wrong at the Box that they didn't want you to see, and have you take a quick look in some other places.  I expect a lot of verification of negatives, or whatever is in the Database, but I have a nasty suspicious mind and suspiciously nasty things have been happening."       "...Yeah.  Okay.  It'll be slower in the dark, though."       "Oh, some parts will be in daylight."       Flicker waited a moment, and the Database projected the outline of a list that was far too long to fit on her visor display.  It started with a survey of just who was staking out the home of the magician she'd talked to at the Box, and included whole sets of vehicles and buildings associated with spy agencies and less identifiable groups.       "All right," she said, and headed out.       *****       Flicker settled into a rhythm.  Slow down, take action, verify, speed up, move on.  And consider her life, while she moved.       Human--for some value of human that was possible for her--was part of what she wanted to be.  Speed and motion were a much bigger part of who and what she already was.  Human was an illusion, an emulation.  A load bearing one.  Maybe even a necessary one, in the long term.  But she wasn't good enough yet.  If the last few days had proved anything, it was this.       She'd read various versions of a joke about how many people stopped growing up and just started faking it after about age fourteen.  Even humans sometimes had to fake being adult humans.  And that went to the essence of what she thought Journeyman had been trying to say.  For her to connect, to feel, to be the person she wanted to be, meant being socially human.  But to relate as an equal, as a full partner, as... well there weren't proper words, but to connect fully with him meant being a responsible adult.       And Flicker couldn't manage both at the same time.  Not yet.  She could fake it for a while, but push too hard?  Add the stress that came with being who she was in the world she lived in?  Her emulation broke down.  Humans used age as a proxy for responsibility, and she'd been fixated on the unfairness of that.  But all the advice, the common wisdom, assumed you were human.  And social support was centered on 'normal' human, for an extensive and arbitrary set of dimensions of normal.       But if she gave up on human, if she fully accepted that there was no one like her, that she was alien to this world of odd bipeds, she risked finding the breaking point of the fragile thread of empathy that connected her to that world.  Because they could be so foolish, so cruel to one another, so ignorant, so blind.  Doc had always been very clear about the danger in that.  And the Volunteer had spent a whole day talking her down from the edge, after her big fight with Doc, when she'd wanted to act, to treat the world like a dysfunctional terrarium that cried out for intervention to stop the evil, the oppression, the war, the starvation and brutality and shortsightedness and indifference, all the so very unnecessary pain, outside the narrow range of actions allowed for a superhero.       The most frightening part of that day had been seeing the edges of some of the Volunteer's load-bearing illusions.  The ideals that let him help the things he could, as an alien in a world of humans.  But those illusions couldn't be hers.  Because she was more alien?  She didn't know.  She did know they'd broken others who had tried.       She needed to find her own way.  While she could still care.  Because if she stopped caring, it would be way too easy for her to go over any one of several edges.       Maybe Dr. Reinhart could help Flicker find better ways to connect to humans.  But she also needed to learn more about who, and what, she already was.  The limits and idiosyncrasies of her power and being.  Doc hadn't stopped her experiments because they'd reached any firm conclusions.  He'd stopped them because they'd become too dangerous to continue on Earth.       How fast was she, really?  What new realms of sense and ability were beyond the limits she needed to maintain on Earth?  The aim of Speedtest was to find out.  It was the only thing she looked forward to now that was truly hers.  It was past time.       *****       More than an hour and numerous additions to the list later, Flicker was finally done.  She'd spent a lot of the extra time following up discrepancies in Italy.  There was a messy but still relatively quiet political crisis going on there, triggered by some combination of Hermes' rampage in Rome, the identity and contacts of the now dead magician who had summoned him, recriminations over the botched response that had resulted in his death, and a long-simmering conflict over the reasons that Italy didn't currently have any resident superheroes.       She'd taken a brief moment to ghost over to the shop in Florence where she'd gotten takeout gelato with Journeyman to celebrate first becoming partners.  It was still closed in the first hint of dawn light.       Sentimental human indulgence.  Was there a point?  Maybe there would be again, someday, a time when it would mean more than something she'd thought she'd lost, but never really had.  But for now, it was closure.  Acceptance.       She headed back to Doc's HQ and decided against speeding up.  Speedtest would be soon enough, and there was no point in leaving a bright plasma trail that could set off alarms for satellite watchers who might wonder why she was hurrying across the Atlantic at night.       *****       "I recommend that you agree to Dr. Reinhart's conditions," said Jumping Spider.  She sipped from her coffee cup and eyed the Database display in front of her with mild disapproval.  "She's right about the amount of inconvenience adjusting her work around advising you will be."       "You think she's safe?" asked Flicker.       "Heh.  No.  I think she's followed consistent goals, and she's functional, competent, as expert as you're going to get, skilled at error recovery, and very smart.  Smart enough to understand just how vital and risky giving you psych advice will be.  But don't try spying on her.  She didn't think much of your failure to consider the consequences of stalking Journeyman."       Flicker frowned.  "How do you know that?"       "I talked to her while you were gone."       Jumping Spider paused, waiting to see if Flicker would ask a question.  She sped up.  Her human emotion emulator indicated her nominal reaction would be anger or irritation.  Human emotions weren't serving her very well lately, so she ignored it.  It would be a drop in the bucket compared to everything else, anyway.       DASI?  Anything security relevant that I need to know about Jumping Spider contacting Dr. Reinhart?       No.       Well, that was unambiguous.  She'd asked Jumping Spider for her professional assessment as an intelligence expert, and it was clear she was testing Flicker's self-control, too.  She slowed back down.       "Go on."       "It was an illuminating conversation.  She referenced some of my more subtle tradecraft tricks like an academic being careful about citation footnotes.  If you focus on her advice rather than trying to emulate her, respect boundaries, and maintain a healthy level of skepticism about untested theory, I think her aid will help you.  Once she's ready to meet--it will be at least a week."       "Good to know.  Thank you.  Was the information I verified for you helpful?"       "I don't know yet for most of it.  But your performance was technically adequate while under direct supervision."       Jumping Spider had no qualms about hammering at a point or reminder until she was sure it got through--in this case that Flicker was still bad at the judgement part of spying, however technically skilled she might be.       Flicker nodded.  "Any other suggestions or comments?"       "Do you want my assessment of what happened to Journeyman?  It's speculative, and you may find it upsetting."       "I don't ask for your opinions because I think I'll like them."       A snorted laugh.  "Okay.  I think Hermes' arrival was part of an op, and was deliberately timed to coincide with whatever Journeyman did just before exfiltrating.  I also think we're unlikely to ever get enough evidence to prove that.  From an operations viewpoint, I think Journeyman got entangled and dragooned into something far more dangerous than he'd ever voluntarily agree to, but all sides--and I definitely think there were more than two--in the conflict that might have wanted him dead knew he had your backup, and that's why he lived.  Tell me.  If demons had killed him in some dimension you could get to, what would have been your first impulse?"       "Burn it to the ground, then burn the ground," said Flicker.       "That's the sort of thing Oracles and Seers pick up on.  But since he came back alive, you're much less inclined to do anything disproportionate, right?  Because attribution is much tougher, even if an attack is aimed at you or Doc.  And there will be probably be completely uninvolved people living in the same place even if you do know who is responsible."       "...Yes."       "That's also the sort of thing Oracles and Seers pick up on.  I also think that whoever Journeyman believes is your mother is part of one of the sides, and that an opposition tactic that he fears is a framing attempt to deflect any retaliation onto her.  And he got dragged deep into the wilderness of mirrors, no longer fully trusts his own judgement, and didn't want to drag you there, too.  I'll give him credit for that."       Flicker sped up to consult the Database.  'Wilderness of mirrors' was an intelligence term for living in a state of perpetual uncertainty about a messy mix of hard to attribute hostile action and coincidence.  Just the sort of thing she hated.       "Great.  So, was he being deceptive about--No. There's no point it getting angry about any of it again until I can talk to Dr. Reinhart."       "You're learning.  And you stopped Hermes without killing him or anyone else, Journeyman got back alive, you didn't lose it when he disengaged--which was inevitable--and it's much harder to attack someone who's in a different dimension.  And you know who is at home in the wilderness of mirrors?"       "You?"       "Dr. Reinhart.  I do all right, but I suspect you'll get along better with her."       "Okay.  Thank you for your assessment.  Do you think I should delay Speedtest because of Journeyman's warning?"       "Because of his warning?  Are willing to put it off indefinitely?"       "No."       "Then no, because he didn't tell you anything actionable.  But whether it's a good idea at all is not my call.  Talk to Doc."       "I will," said Flicker.  "Jumping Spider?"       "Yes?"       "This was... less unpleasant than talking to you usually is."       She smiled.  "Don't worry.  I'll make it up to you next time."       Flicker shook her head, but felt her mouth want to twitch in response.  Human wasn't something you could just turn on and off...       She headed out to find Doc.

How readability of content impact SEO
As a substance maker, you realize how to make an article and incorporate significant perspectives, for example, best-fitted watchwords and information driven experiences. Notwithstanding, before presenting the article you have to check its comprehensibility, something many substance groups ignore.
In the event that you need your composed article to rank higher on the web index results pages (SERPs), you should pay attention to your article's comprehensibility.
Two normal inquiries with respect to intelligibility:
How does clarity influence my site improvement (SEO) score?
Do web indexes have extraordinary highlights to check the substance clarity?
So the brisk answers are, indeed, coherence influences your SEO and, no, web indexes don't have extraordinary highlights to check intelligibility. Intelligibility is viewed as a backhanded positioning variable however that doesn't mean it doesn't make a difference. This article examines what coherence is, the means by which it influences SEO and why it makes a difference.

Comprehend Your Online Reader
Any energetic peruser will disclose to you their method of engrossing data and working through content contrasts between perusing on the web and disconnected. Optimize Your Website And Get More Traffic
Tumblr media
You might think like you’re fighting a battle against the entire world when you’re starting out with search engine optimization strategies. All the information online can be a bit overwhelming. This article has lots of useful advice to start properly.
Pay-per-click approaches can be used in affiliate marketing in a really effective way. The pay is not very high, but over time, the profits will start to add up.
Take a peak at your competitors’ website code. This gives you information about how they use SEO on their website, and which keywords they use. You don’t want to copy what they are doing, but this bit of detective work can give you ideas of keywords of your own.
TIP! When you develop SEO pages, it pays to have lots of shorter pieces on related topics instead of a single long one. Pages that are long don’t do as well as the short ones within search engine results.
Search Engine
If you are naming your URLs for each individual page, you should keep in mind that search engine spiders can not identify dynamic language and session id names. Make each URL simple and directly related to the topic of each page, for both the search engine and your potential visitors.
Each page should revolve around a specific subject. Don’t try to promote all of your products on one post or a single article. Your customer will just be confused and not want to stay. You have better success with having only one product focus per page.
TIP! There are many methods to optimize your search engine results. A site that utilizes techniques designed to maximize search efficiency will produce the best results.
To help your website rank higher use keyword in your page’s URL. If your URL contains symbols or numbers, your page will rank lower because people will not include them in their web search. Including keywords that are important and relevant to the site can really improve rankings and traffic.
Begin by doing ample keyword research. Knowing which keywords to use will help you get the attention you want for your articles. The focus of your research should be on discovering which search terms are most common in your particular niche. You can then use those terms to increase your rankings through search engine optimization.
Some people believe that adding keywords to the comment tags of a website will increase their visibility. It is more important to have quality content on your site.
TIP! To receive a better search engine ranking, be sure to place relative keywords in the metatag portion of your website. Include common misspellings of your keywords as well to increase your ranking.
Site Map
Create a site map that includes your keywords. A good site map helps your viewers by acting like an index of all your site’s pages. Search engines use site maps to rank websites in the search results, due to the fact that they make a website more usable, and that is an important factor in their ranking systems.
To avoid the spam filters of the search engines, avoid duplicating any content on your site. Know that it is quite possible to use duplicate content without even knowing it. Repeating the same thing over and over may be easier for you, but to SEO crawlers, it looks like spamming.
TIP! You have to give keyword density some attention when optimizing pages for the search engines. To avoid this from happening, keep the total number of keywords on a certain page under 20%.

Conclusions and sorrow
I've nearly finished editing the three books. I'm slightly overdue with submission, but it is what it is.
Underpinning most of my PhD research has been my ongoing relationship with the two elderly Staffordshire bull terriers that my partner and I adopted right at the start of it, around Christmas 2016.
It is with overwhelming heartbeat that yesterday, after I visit from the mobile vet, we discovered that Lea has a late stage inoperable growth. The vets are returning tomorrow and we will be saying goodbye to lea. I don't have the words yet to address the feeling of loss, or the anxiety of this ongoing 48 where I with lea at every moment to make sure she is as comfortable as possible. it's a lot. And I need to keep writing things in order to occupy my mind. So this is a draft (since edited, but that's in InDesign files I can't access from my phone) of the potential lines beyond the PhD, including the thing I worked on for a year regarding dogs, but couldn't emotionally deal with even prior to this last illness.
I could not have done this research without my relationship with Buster and Lea. The concept of care which I've addressed is as much drawn from this relationship as it is from Sedgwick. How to care for someone across the lines of different bodies and senses and desires. The concept of play as emergent collaboration equally comes from learning to play with dogs who had suffered neglect at the hands of their original owners, and then a year recovering in the noisy RSPCA kennels before they were well enough to be rehomed. I love you lea.

Conclusions and exits.
The structure and methodology of this PhD Output consisting of three approaches to a central area of art practice, and within each approach multiple overlapping attempts through the various documents, turns the issue of a conclusion into a challenge.
Rather than attempt to draw books and documents toward a unifying conclusion, erasing the differences between then, I have offered conclusions in the documents individually. Some of these are clearly labeled as such, some are more demonstrative, and some left as provocations.
Throughout the three books are indications of where future paths could proceed. For continuation of creative research and the application of concepts developed, these indications are generally placed at the end of documents.  Paths which are more tangential, or areas where the research could be reinforced through engaging with a separate discipline or practitioner appear in endnotes.
In place of some kind of ending for the PhD Output as whole I will raise three of the avenues of future research not already mentioned in individual documents, that will be pursued at its end. All of these examples incorporate work already commenced, that for practical reasons has not been addressed in documents.
The Incomplete Object.
Archeologist Chantal Conneller has produced a large amount of research focused Star Carr, a Mesolithic site in Yorkshire (Conneller, 2004, 2011; Little et al., 2016; Milner, Conneller, & Taylor, 2018a, 2018b). In particular, Conneller has provided a framework for examining some of the objects recovered from the site, and through this reassess the historic inhabitants of the area’s relationship to animals and objects. The objects, twentyone of which were found during the site’s excavation by Professor J.G.D. Clark between 1949 and 1951, consist of the “uppermost part of the skull of a red deer, with the antlers still attached” and are referred to as “antler frontlets” (Conneller, 2004, p. 37). In offering an interpretation for the frontlet’s use, Clark “suggested they could have been used either as hunting aids, to permit hunters to stalk animals at close range without being seen, or as headgear in ritual dances” (Conneller, 2004, p. 37). This interpretation resulted in an impasse between a “‘functional’ and a ‘ritual’ analogy” and has according to Conneller, meant that “in the intervening 50 years they have been ignored” (Conneller, 2004, p. 37).
Conneller’s research breaches the impasse of an animal derived object needing to be either functional or ritual by use of philosopher Gilles Deleze and psychoanalyst Félix Guattari’s work in “A Thousand Plateaus” (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987). Firstly, Conneller outlines how in Deleuze and Guattari, “animals come to be seen [...] as an assemblage composed of a number of ways of perceiving and acting in the word” (Conneller, 2004, p. 44). In this view, animals are not singular fixed entities, and the objects derived from them are therefore not limited to being symbolic of the animal whole or else be understood only as practical material. Animals are here understood as collection of “affects” (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987, p. 253), and the objects derived from them convey those Affects to the user in a manner which outside of the binary of ritual and functional. From this point Conneller proceeds to “examine the specific ways in which different things are seen to modify or extend the capacities of people in particular contexts” (Conneller, 2004, p. 51), bridging Deleuze and Guattari to theorist Donna Haraway’s concept of “situated knowledges” which replaces a fixed epistemological view with “webs of differential positioning” (D. Haraway, 1988, p. 590). The use of animal objects becomes simultaneously a process of taking on capacities as well as the ethical/epistemological/affective engagement with the world from another position.
These observations from archeology are useful not because they set some historic precedent for how art should function, but because they articulate processes which are important to art from another perspective. In the documents in this PhD Output which examine artworks I have consciously treated both the processes deployed by the artist and those of her characters in the same manner. In the art I am interested in, things are not easily split between the practical and the ritual but form processes across these lines to perform different things.
Finally, when I contacted Conneller in 2019 she was continuing to examine the frontlets of Star Carr in terms of how they function as “unfinished things”. Conneller has already observed that the frontlets were “broken up as a source of raw material” (Conneller, 2004, p. 46), but is now considering how this occurred concurrently with their uses. A framework for considering art objects which do not reach a fixed state, but are continually re-worked, and drawn from while being used is relevant to a number of documents in this PhD Output. It is relevant to the analysis of artist Tai Shani’s works (SHANI, 2019) which undergo edits between redeployments, or the ongoing work “sidekick” (Price, 2013) by Elizabeth Price. Going forward, I would consider how unfinished things connects to the writing practice of William Burruoghs both through the “cut-up” technique to “cut oneself out of language” (Hassan, 1963, p. 9), and the process whereby his novels were re-edited in subsequent editions. Burroughs is also relevant to the other side of unfinished things whereby these things are not just refined, but are a source of material for future things. I am also interested in the process by which computer software is updated via “patches” (Fisher, 2019) as another model for an unfinished thing.
I’m interested in the political implications of objects which refuse the linear transition from raw material to finished commodity, but is instead part of processes which cross that distinction. To borrow the image from Karl Marx’s Capital Vol. 1 (Marx, 1981), what would it mean for “coat” to remain functioning as “ten yards of linen”, to be always in a process of being woven/unwoven/rewoven into different forms? I feel there is something here to be pursued via the concepts of Incomplete Provocations, and the improvisations and departures which are centred in Tabletop Role Playing Games.
Divination Storytelling
The second exit is far more practical and straightforward. During my research I have used and developed methods for creating parts of narratives based on sortation systems such as card decks and dice rolls. In 2018 I produced an artwork entitled “The Sodden Gates of Vulnerability” which borrowed a mechanic used in multiple games whereby the space in which play takes places is procedurally generated. A hypothetical example of this mechanic would be a game which takes place in a derelict spaceship, the interior rooms and corridors of which is represented with cardboard tiles. When the players reach the exit of one room, a new random room tile is placed at the exit from the first, so the spaceship is configured, and unpredictable, with each subsequent playthrough. In The Sodden Gates of Vulnerability I combined some of the lore from Games Workshop’s derelict spaceship exploration game “Space Hulk” (Games Workshop, 1999) with their subsequently released rules for randomly generated spaceships (Hunt, 2013), to randomly generate prompts for a narrative built from a fictionalised version of my own past.
As a result of the cessation symptoms I was experiencing while coming off antidepressants I found memories returning that medication use had suppressed. In addition, there were physical cessation symptoms which mnemonically triggered some often confused memories of spaces in the town centre of Luton where I spent my teens, frequently from times in the early hours of the morning after leaving a club or a party. I reconstructed these fragmented memories, and the bodily feelings which connected them to the present, and any emergent feelings and noted them down as prompts on index cards. Some memories were so abstract as to not describe a place but just a sensation, or an action. These abstract memories, combined with some other images and thoughts were written up in a list and labeled 1-20.
The Sodden Gates of Vulnerability was produced as a single take spoken performance to microphone. It began with a short reflection on the different ways in which physical geography and brain chemistry are both modulated by chemicals. After this I shuffled and dealt an index card, describing the derelict spaceship/ 4am Luton Town Centre space it represented in the manner of Games Master setting a scene for players of a Role Playing Game. I then rolled a 20 sided dice and used the corresponding entry from the list as a prompt for what the player (the audience to whom the work is addressed) did in traversing this space. A partial transcription of one room follows;
“You stagger out of the thickening fog into the area where escaping heat from the many times kicked in door makes a dim pocket at the edge of the street. Banging on the door that feels like it should have given in by now and it is finally opened by someone inside. You roll in, and so does the fog, and the door opener is already turning the corner ahead into the living room so you guess you will follow them, remembering to shut the door behind you.
The living room is thick with dust and hair and ash over the brown carpet and old sofas. No one has their feet on the floor, all bunched up to keep warm or to manage some symptoms of intake.
You just want to buy, but that isn't how this is going to work out. It never does.
Everything slips. Someone makes you take a music cassette and in lock-eyed intensity tells you why you will like it and when you will die.
A man takes you to one side and rapidly ages while sharing with you a one sided conversation about how he has lived his life. He has little ears like fins and catfish whiskers and it's clear from the way he holds and interacts with the portable stereo he cradles that he has a relationship with Fabio and Grooverider which is both more beastially physical and more vapourusly transcendental than you will ever understand.
You slip out and it's dawn and you have the cassette and you don't think you bought anything but now do not think you need anything so maybe you bought it and weren't paying attention during intake or maybe someone else was in charge of your body.
You roll out with the fog and luckily town is down hill but my god you would never be able to find this place again and my god you would probably never want to because all those people would want to check how closely you been following their advice on how to live.
Oh yeah the plot twist is you're a rabbit”.
Going forward, I would like to explore the mechanics of procedural narrative based on sortation systems, both as an improvised Rendition, and as material which is subsequently cut up and deployed in other ways, possibly as a development of Diagramatics. I’m looking into how I might produce these works for a platform like YouTube, possible using a split screen where half the image shows the face that speaks, and half shows the sortation system such as tarot-style cards.
Dog Mod
Running throughout all three books of this PhD Output are dogs. When I started this PhD in 2016, I soon afterward began living with Lea and Buster, two elderly Staffordshire Bull Terriers. The importance of this relationship to the research is something I have attempted, and failed, to articulate on many occasions in the last three years. As much as the majority of the documents in this PhD Output are underpinned by a desire to understand my own trans* non-binary gender identity, they are also a response to learning about what Deleuze and Guattari would call dog affects, as well as negotiating my emotions towards Lea and Buster particually during the sadly increasing points where they have become unwell.
In mid 2019 I sketched an outline for what I called the “Dog Mod”. In the language of games, a mod is something added to the game which alters part or all of its systems in some way. Mods are often produced by a third party, and can range from something which simply adds some different functionality (such as the campaign generator for Space Hulk referenced in the previous section) or completely reorientate the system, such as the mod “DayZ” that reconfigures military sim “ARMA” into a zombie survival game and spawned an entire genre of video games (Davison, 2014).
The aim of Dog Mod was to produce a document which could provide a means to reconfigure the rest of the PhD Output through its unspoken focus, dogs. Dog Mod is something I decided was both conceptually and emotionally too overwhelming for me to be able to complete in time for submission, but I remains as a point of departure for my future research. It connects the Becoming-Animal of Deleuze and Guattari (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987; Stark & Roffe, 2015), philosopher Patricia MacCormack’s expansion of this into animal rights discourse in the Ahuman (MacCormack, 2014), with other ideas around, animals, play and care (Chen, 2012; D. J. Haraway, 2016; Massumi, 2014; Vint, 2008).

Your Guide To Understanding Digital Marketing Terms
The most common  Digital Marketing Terms
The field of Digital Marketing is a vast sea full of terms that one article can not accommodate, so we will focus in the next lines only on the most popular terms, which you will encounter a lot while learning this area.
1. CTR
CTR is the number of clicks a person makes when you visit your website or campaigns. The acronym stands for Click Through Rate, a process by which a marketer or advertiser can see how much interaction with their services is served, and whether or not they serve the needs of the target audience, through the click / ad / call rate compared to the overall volume of traffic.
2. Geo-Targeting
Geo-Targeting means geo-targeting that is determined based on the user's IP address. This method is usually used when an online marketer wants to reach an audience in a particular geographic area. Propaganda messages for the people of this region are intensified on other places.
3. Call To Action
Call To Action, or CTA, is an appealingly formulated call to action that persuades the customer to take a position that serves the interests of the marketer and his marketing strategy.
CTA objectives vary according to the type of e-activity as well as the nature of the target audience. It can be in the form of a call to buy in e-commerce related activities, it can be a call to participate, comment or interact as on social networking platforms, and can be a call to urge membership or subscription to a service provided by the website, or download a file that The site is published.
CTA images are also numerous. Some sites put it clearly in the online platform, such as the tool of purchase, participation or account registration deployed on the sites. Some aim to put it indirectly in the body of the content being published, such as writing content about the history of a brand and in the body of the content you find sentences inviting you to buy from them. Others link the use of location services with call-to-action. For example, you can only comment on content displayed by signing up for a blog membership. You will not be able to view the study data, unless you download it from the following link, and so on.
4. CMS
CMS means the Content Management System, a system that manages your content as a whole, from indexing, writing and editing, to auxiliaries, publishing dates, and other points.WordPress is the most popular web-based content management system, with too many apps, Themes and Plugins.
This system gives the marketer many powers, from the freedom to modify sections on the website, to the way they display, as well as tracking and control of sales online. These systems vary from manual to electronic, there are those who prefer to manage the content in a manual manner based on his experience in design and programming, and there are those who prefer to resort to ready-made electronic programs as we mentioned earlier to WordPress.
5. CPC
CPC is an abbreviation of Cost Per Click, a mechanism used to calculate the cost of advertising in advertising campaigns, whether on websites or when using social media platforms such as Facebook, so that the budget of the ad is calculated according to the number of clicks that are made on it.
6. CPM
CPM is another mechanism of e-marketing, usually referred to as Cost Per Mille or Cost per Thousand Impressions in which the cost of advertising is determined by the number of times it appears to consumers. Here, the price of an ad is not determined by the number of clicks as in the CPC, but by the number of times it appears to the target audience. For every thousand views, the advertiser earns a fee that changes relative to the cost of pricing. This method requires selecting high performing ads in order to compete strongly in attracting the customer and achieving the desired view rate.
7. CPA
CPA is Cost Per Action, a marketing term that denotes the cost-per-reaction of a given ad or content. For example, the customer downloads the application or subscribes to the mailing service. Here, the cost of advertising depends on the response the target audience will take to the content or ad provided.
8. Cost Per Acquisition
Cost Per Acquisition is one of the methods used in marketing advertising, in which the cost of advertising is determined by the purpose for which it is intended. If the marketing purpose is to purchase the product, then the price of the ad will depend on the number of times purchases are made by the target customers, not the clicks of engagement or product sharing.
9. Long Tail Keywords
Long Tail Keywords, are long keywords. They are usually used by the public in search of something very specific. These keywords, though low in search engines, are higher for ROI.Unlike the small keywords that anyone can look for whether they are interested in the product offered, or are willing to buy it. Long keywords attract the target audience looking for that particular product. Therefore, marketers usually resort to them to escape the war of competition for other keywords, and in order to increase return on investment.
10. Organic Traffic
It is intended for visitors who come to the website normally through SEO search engine optimization efforts, without spending advertising costs to attract visitors.
11. SEO
SEO is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization, a process in which content is configured to appear in search engines, so that it can compete for the top ranks of results displayed in Google. You can do your own SEO strategy or hire an experts to do that.  You can read The Most Successful SEO Strategy Ignored By Most Sites to avoid major mistakes in your SEO.
12. Inbound / Outbound link
Inbound link is a term associated with SEO procedures and includes the configuration of pages to appear in search engines. Content within the website is linked to each other. That is, placing one page of the site on another page in support of the pages of each other, and to encourage the visitor to click on this link in order to reduce the bounce rate Bounce Rate.
For example, an article about one of the natural herbs cultivated in Japan is published and stamped with a direct link when pressed. Another article on the same platform talks about the state of Japan as a whole, or elaborates on all the herbs grown in that country. . The same is true when someone offers a phone for sale on their electronic platform, and then gives the visitor the opportunity to visit their accessories available in another section by clicking on the word here, or go to accessories, or other different formulations that do the same.
The Outbound link is a term that refers to external links that are referenced within the content provided, such as a statistic within the article, its link is placed for more credibility, or that two companies cooperate in a joint advertising campaign, so that a product is sold from the platform One of them, selling its accessories from the partner platform on which its link will be referenced through this method.
13. Page Rank
Page Rank is a term used to indicate the strength of a site or page displayed according to Google's global scale. This process is calculated based on some data including traffic, time spent on the page, exclusive content, internal links, external links added to it, as well as page configuration and content displayed to search engines.
The concept of Page Rank has now evolved into Page Authority and Domain Authority to have the same meaning, but according to other more recent assessment factors, it is linked to the Google search engine updates that are now published almost regularly.
14. EdgRank
Edg Rank is the other side of the Page Rank but for the Facebook platform. The Edg Rank is the algorithm that determines which publications have priority over the newsfeed. This label is determined by a set of items, the most important of which are the media that is attached to the publication, along with the content type, Organic or Paid? As well as your engagement rate and view or comment share.
15. Bounce Rate
Bounce Rate is treated as the most important tool used to measure the efficiency of the content displayed on your site, so whether SEO efforts and paid advertising campaigns will pay off or go unheeded.
Bounce Rate as an electronic meaning refers to the rate at which a visitor leaves your site without clicking on any link on this page, and going to another page. This rate is accurately measured by Google Analytics. Webmaster's role will reduce this rate to a minimum as much as possible.
In terms of achieving business goals, it is a mechanism used to indicate the number of visitors who viewed your page or website, without the content being offered to make a quick purchase decision, or to interact with what is being offered.
The importance of this mechanism is to alert the advertiser to modify his marketing methods in case the rate is constantly increasing, but in the case of lack of rate, this indicates the effectiveness of the methods used and the need to invest and develop to bring more interaction to the site and the project in general.
16. Buyer Persona
Buyer Persona is a personal profile designed by the marketer / entrepreneur to understand the customer. The first step before you build a successful marketing campaign is to understand the target audience for this campaign, and what are its requirements? Buyer Persona, then, is an in-depth study of the client's psychology, so that you understand the demographic characteristics of his age, social and physical level, the saturation that your advertising campaign should contain, and the frustrations you should avoid as well.
If your audience is from a high class social class and belongs to a high level of material, this will help you in determining the language you will address them, so that they are far from popular or terminology, and will also help you in the display of luxury products you want without fear of high price or lack of Her audience. The same is true when you study the hopes and frustrations of your young audience, here you will choose to move away from your accent from official or excessive specialization. You will also avoid the complexity of the means to subscribe to the services or prolong the waiting time for downloading the site. Young people, as they are known, do not like to wait too long and tend to fast and easy means.
As you can see, Buyer Persona plays a deeper understanding of your target audience, as well as finding the best way to address them and convince them of various promotional messages.
17. Viral Marketing
Viral Marketing is an electronic marketing based on attractive content, which reaches a wide range of targeted at the lowest possible cost because of its excellence. There is no secret component to creating a viral online campaign, but here are some guidelines to help:
The content displayed should be in line with popular trends when it is published or known as Trending.
Content creates a kind of controversy that drives the audience to engage and comment. It should be noted, however, that the issue in question does not diminish the value of the brand or interfere with its mental image in the mind of the public.
The more the campaign is based on the personal and humanitarian side, the greater the prevalence and interaction with the target customers.
Visitors love to interact with posts that are crafted in a story-or-story way, so the more the video, post, or article on which an ad campaign is based, is formulated as a story, the more promising it will be.
Content should be simple and complex, so don't use lax terms that the general public feels are diminishing their intelligence, or use specialized language that the audience feels is far from understanding your message.
The use of shocking or cynical method always succeeds in viral campaigns, keeping in mind that this does not conflict with the brand image or is used in a way that affects its relationship with the public. A news channel cannot rely on cynical propaganda for its services, and a company that deals with children cannot use the traumatic approach that may hurt the feelings of its young audience.
18. Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate Marketing, or affiliate marketing, is one of the most popular areas of online profit, in which the marketer offers his services to promote the products of a customer, in exchange for a commission calculated from each purchase transaction through it.
Commission marketing varies depending on the type of activity being promoted, the mechanisms used by the marketer in advertising, Amazon affiliate , clickbank , andCommission Junction are among the best in the industry globally.
19. SEM
SEM is a term used to refer to Search Engine Marketing, a process in which Google results are used to show branded ads, so that advertisers use AdWords ads to show their ad as a first result on search engines when a consumer searches for a word Specific key.
20. Engagement Rate
Engagement Rate means the interaction rate of the content or product offered by the target customers. The more successful the content is to get customers to comment, share, or any other form of engagement, the greater the engagement rate of the site or page of the social media platform.
Conclusion
The previous 20 terms are among the most common terms in the field of e-marketing, each of which has been addressed in a simplified way to help you understand its outline.

Of Sound Laws, Shortcuts and Sloppiness
I want to expand on Tocharian Irredentism’s last post regarding the decline of historical linguistics (as it’s short, I’ll quote it here in its entirety):
I don’t know what it’s like in the hard sciences, but my impression is that, past a certain point which we may or may not have already reached, the rate of progress in historical linguistics wouldn’t change much with the addition of more manpower because you need a lot of motivation and brainpower to do it right, and to the extent that anyone with those qualities isn’t already there it’s because academia is a raw deal nowadays. Adding more people would probably just result in more ‘work’ like Blevins’s Indo-Vasconic, where many of the proposed IE etymologies are straightforwardly wrong, or premature internal classification, or ~computer-aided statistical methods~. There are only so many people who are going to bother to learn four languages or spend years doing fieldwork on Malaria Mountain, especially since you could instead bung together some computer program and golly would you look at that, Japonic must be related to Ainu and Korean!
A lot of science is sort of fake, and if you add more people who are just going to do fake science, you’re not going to get anywhere – and it’ll be harder for the people who aren’t doing fake science to find each other, keep up with the papers, and so on, since the signal-to-noise ratio will change unfavorably.
What could increase the rate of progress is improving access to information. UPSID was useful, PHOIBLE is useful, Index Diachronica could end up being useful and that was put together by random people on a forum. There’s a lot of low-hanging fruit! But how well does academia incentivize doing the infrastructure stuff? In many fields, not so much.
...............
About a year ago I had a conversation with a guy who was doing his doctorate at one of the top grad programs in the US for linguistics. He explained solemnly to me that the reason it was Important always and everywhere to transliterate Greek into the Latin alphabet was that otherwise the literature wouldn't be accessible--accessibility being the lodestar of linguistics (and other fields more broadly) in our modern age.
Never mind that many, many, many of these articles and monographs are paywalled at exorbitant prices. It's self-evident to me that transliterating Greek into the Latin alphabet in an article that costs $29 for any non-academic to look at isn't about "accessibility" at all, and that anybody who thinks it is is either blind or willfully disingenuous.
But more broadly I think the whole "accessibility" obsession is symptomatic of a broader loss of...it's not rigor and I want to make it clear that I'm not accusing the wider linguistic community of lack of rigor. It's something else. I think there's a big difference between how historical linguistics is done and how many other forms of linguistics are done, that this difference runs very deep, and that both the obsession with "accessibility" and the decline of good historical linguistics are symptomatic of. Consider the way theoretical syntax or sociolinguistics are done. You have a broad theory (minimalism, X-Bar, sociological observations about code-switching or class differences in language use), and you fit a case study into it: A Minimalist Analysis of the Syntax of Guaraní; Gender Differences in Spoken Egyptian Arabic; Class and Language Use in Brazilian Portuguese; The Morphosyntax of the Nivkh Verb (A Generative Approach). The case study is generally fairly self-contained and, although obviously references will be made to the existing literature (if you're doing a Minimalist analysis of Burmese, you'll probably be referencing a Minimalist analysis of Yoruba or Kurdish at some point), it's a case study: fit language A into theory B.
I don't say this to imply that these approaches aren't intellectually rigorous or valuable--they absolutely are! But they break down in the face of historical linguistics, where to figure out why a particular form in Celtic appears to show a lengthened grade it helps to be able to reach into the back of your head and pull out an obscure paradigm from Luwian or Tocharian, or where to explain why a particular word almost but doesn't quite fit the known sound laws you want to be able to rack your entire mind for neighboring forms looking for a dialectal borrowing or analogical reshaping. And if you can't find the form in the back of your head, you'd better have the patience to rummage through five or six dictionaries until you have a good picture of what might have happened. It is not a field that lends itself to doing anything quickly, by halves, or with corner-cutting, and it encourages, indeed almost requires, the ingestion of hundreds of individually meaningless factoids about individual words, sound changes, or morphemes--each factoid nigh-useless on its own, but enabling the historical linguist to make incisive and wide-ranging analyses by bouncing from factoid to factoid in one's mental or physical library until a slightly less murky picture emerges.
This is the fatal flaw in the fashionable attempts at macro-comparison exemplified by Blevins' attempt at Proto-Indo-European-Euskarian (a lengthy title--Indo-Vasconic works just as well, surely?) or the Automated Similarity Judgment Program. By not putting in the tedious spade-work of individual analysis at the word level the new approaches are doomed to see connections that aren't there and miss connections that are. An example from Blevins' newly published monograph on Indo-Vasconic is a proposed reconstruction *okho:
Tumblr media
I won't comment on the Basque lemmata--I know very little about Basque. But PIE *ko- 'together, with, by' must have had a palatovelar, as Lithuanian sù (with unexpected depalatalization, but a clear etymology) and OCS съ readily attest--but PIE *ḱ goes back to *khi- in Blevins' PIV.
How about Tocharian oko? Here's Douglas Q. Adams' Dictionary of Tocharian B on the matter:
Tumblr media
Probably cognate to "acorn", from a form *h₂ógeh₂- or thereabouts, with reshaping here and there. But under Blevins' framework PIE *g must go back to PIV *g.
Or take this entry:
Tumblr media
But Greek τῑμή can't be from *t- anything; *t before *i *u or their glide counterparts yields σ in Greek (compare Latin tū with Greek σύ and Sanskrit tyájati with Greek σέβομαι. (Should I be writing all my Sanskrit examples in Devanāgarī? Perhaps, but there seems to be less of a tradition to do so--and there's certainly no such tradition for Tocharian). Instead τῑμή must be from the zero-grade of *kʷeh₁y-, probably with laryngeal metathesis, in the same family as τίω 'I honor'--on this Beekes and Chantraîne are in agreement. The development of the Greek consonants is hardly an obscure matter--the palatalization of the labiovelars before front vowels and sigmatization of *t before high ones are well-known.
Now it is all very well to propose "I think I'm right about these words, and the established etymologies are wrong, and here's why." But Blevins doesn't do that. τῑμή and oko indeed look like the other forms to which they are connected, but it is well-established that they are not related at all. Well-established etymologies are of course overturned from time to time. But you cannot overturn a consensus judgment without confronting it, and the consensus judgments here are not even mentioned.
And what of the Automated Similarity Judgment Program and similar attempts to do historical linguistics by bringing in Big Data, the Delphic oracle of our time? Anything a human can do, a computer can do faster; and insofar as the goal is to draw surface-level connections between similar-looking words that will fall apart upon closer inspection, these programs may be said to be successful indeed. Consider the way the ASJP codes sounds (Appendix C): all the sounds of the world's languages have to be mapped onto 41 characters. But the groupings are not made with reference to what sound changes and correspondences are actually found. For example, <i> is used for all four of /i ɪ y ʏ/ and their lengthened versions; but /y/ corresponds to /u/ in related languages far more often than it does to /i/, because /y/ derives from /u/ much more often than from /i/ (consider French, Ancient Greek, Dhegiha Siouan, Germanic umlaut, and California English). By using a simplified toy model of phonology with little reference to what actually happens, the deck is going to be stacked in bias of certain sound shifts and correspondences before the cards are even dealt. But the broader problem is that same as that seen in Indo-Vasconic above: historical linguistics does not deal in chance resemblances but in the historical derivation of lexemes and morphemes. A computer program is doomed to ring true on English bad and Persian بد (bæd), English day and Latin diēs, PIE *h₁ed- 'eat' and Mongolian идэх; it's similarly doomed to ring false on wheel and cakrá-, day and foveō, hear and ἀκούω.
Of course, you can always give it extra information, telling it to undo Grimm's Law with Germanic data, for example. But where does that extra information come from? It comes from the tedious nuts and bolts of real historical linguistics, thumbing through dictionaries, making lists of misbehaving words, for which there is no substitute and never will be.
Real historical linguistics is hard. Real historical linguistics is tedious. Long live historical linguistics, and long live historical linguists, who can't be replaced by computers--not until the computers are really reading through dictionaries and thinking about reshapings. More broadly, I think both the Indo-Vasconics and the Big Data-driven approaches are driven by the desire to make historical linguistics work more like generative syntax, the application of a theory to a well-defined, self-contained case study.
I'll leave everybody with a quote from the inimitable Ives Goddard's 1981 article Against the Evidence Claimed for Some Algonquian Dialectical Relationships (bolding mine):
The problem with Proulx's claim is that it is made without any explicit formulation of what the historical rules are that are taken to derive the attested languages from the protolanguage. But to do comparative linguistics by making reconstructions without formulating the subsequent historical developments that convert them into the attested languages is completely invalid, since the reconstructions are not ends in themselves and are only as valid as the histories that they imply. It is a widespread misunderstanding to consider the comparative method a method for reconstructing protolanguages or proving languages to be related. It is not. It is a method for doing linguistic history.
And that is the crux of the issue. To connect Basque okho to Tocharian oko, or to propose linguistic relationships based on a computer's similarity judgments among a list of forty words picked from the Swadesh list, without reference to the real historical work on the languages involved, is like asking a computer to write a history of the United States based on a random subselection of the literature while ignoring out a vast field of very important work on the subject. It wouldn't fly in history and it shouldn't fly here.
(A final word on transliteration of Greek? It's an OK norm to adopt, I suppose, if you're really concerned about accessibility. But I remain convinced that it's not really about accessibility. Rather--and this is a very unusual attitude for an academic to have--there are a lot of linguists who for some reason just don't want to learn how to read the Greek alphabet. I agree that there's a bit of Eurocentrism and arbitrariness in that e.g. we traditionally transcribe Sanskrit and Tocharian but not Greek or Cyrillic; but it is what it is. And much more often accessibility is made more or less possible not by the format of what is being written or even by paywalls but by the literature on which the subject is founded. There simply is no doing comparative Indo-European at anything approaching an academic level without knowing the Greek alphabet or indeed being able to make your way through an article in German, with a dictionary if need be. Absent a monumental effort to translate and transliterate two hundred years of literature, that won’t change.)

Laundry
Tumblr media
A/N: this goes from cute to absolute filth ;)
Summary:
* [Y/N] and Harry have some fun in the laundry room at 4am in the morning.
Warnings: pure smut
---
“Shit.”
[Y/N]’s eyes snapped open, mind and body now fully awake and she remembered something she was supposed to do before she fell asleep. Peacefully resting beside her was Harry, his lips slightly parted and hair fallen over his face. [Y/N] gently rolled over to check the time – 4:03am. She groaned and felt that irritating irk of responsibility that she needed to take care of before the morning.
Tomorrow is her graduation and she had everything planned out carefully. Before falling asleep with Harry while watching a movie, she had thrown her outfit in the washing machine and was supposed to take it out and dry it once it was finished. Trying not to disturb Harry, she sits up then slowly makes her way off the bed. Harry stirs slightly as [Y/N] is putting on her shoes. His tired eyes are squinting at her as he props his body on the side of his arm.
“What’re y’doin’ baby?” Harry asked her in a groggy voice and shifts his hair out of his eyes.
“Left my clothes in the washing machine and need to go dry them so I’m gonna go do them now, go back to sleep.” [Y/N] said to him.
“Now? It’s…four in the morning.” Harry looks over at the beside clock to check the time.
“I know but I need them dry before six at least – takes a while.” She replied.
“M’coming with you.” Harry pulls the warm blankets off his half naked body and slides into some grey sweatpants and chucks on his own Harry Styles merchandise black hoodie on.
“What? No, it’s okay I can-“
“M’not letting you go down to that dodgy laundry room by yourself.” Harry insisted.
[Y/N] huffed and just stopped there. There wasn’t any point in arguing with him and she didn’t really have the energy to. Taking her damp clothes in one hand, the two leave [Y/N]’s dorm and walk downstairs to the basement of the building. Harry was right – it was quite dodgy. There was no carpet on the floor except the cold grey concrete, no windows or sunlight, and one terrible light which dangled from the ceiling that made the entire room dim and eerie.
[Y/N] opens up the dryer, throws her clothes in before inserting a few coins then closing the lid and setting the timer. There was no point in going back upstairs, neither of them could be bothered anyways. [Y/N] hoists herself onto the clothes folding bench as Harry lazily walks over to her and stands between her legs. She wraps her arms around him as he does the same around her waist. The two of them stay like this for a bit, just soaking up each other’s comfort and warmth, and almost falling asleep again due to the humidity in the basement. With his hands still on her body Harry shifts himself so that he is able to steal a kiss from [Y/N].
“Love you.” Harry sings out of nowhere.
“I love you too.” [Y/N] replies with a laugh.
“Look so pretty when you’re sleepy.” He comments and swipes a strand of her hair out of her eyes.
“You’re such a sap Styles.” [Y/N] playfully nudges his shoulder with her hand.
“Heeeey, don’t push me.” Harry whines like a child.
“I swear your five years old.” [Y/N] rolls her eyes with smile on her face.
“Did you just roll your eyes at me?” Harry gasped. [Y/N] had a slight hint of innocence on her face, as Harry backs away from her and crosses his arms.
“Nooo come back! You’re warm!” She cries.
Harry just stood his ground and turned his head the other way. The couple were always so childish together and thank god they could relate to each other as well because none of their friends understood any of their humour whatsoever. Just about every time they had a friend outing or a dinner, it would always be them two either minding their own business or on their own buzz. Nobody could really understand them, but that’s what made them jealous because they had a relationship like no other.
“Nope, staying right where I am.” Harry huffed, readjusting his arms that were still crossed over his chest.
[Y/N] thought about how she could get him back over here and there was one protruding idea that miraculously popped up in her brain. However, it was risky. She didn’t know who might come down or if there were any security camera’s. But her eyes scanned all four corners of the room and there were no cameras to her satisfaction. So she decided to proceed with her idea, regardless of who might walk in even though it was four in the morning. She spread her legs a little bit wider than they were before, the hem of her pyjama shorts riding up her thigh as Harry took in a very strong notice.
“Please baby.” [Y/N] whines at him
Harry just about went cold in the face when he realised what she was up to. Except he just stood there and allowed her to torture him like that. He intently watches her every single move, her hands shifting from resting on the sides of the bench to sliding down her body and into her shorts and in between her underwear. The situation was completely in [Y/N]’s hands and Harry still refrained himself from giving into her temptations. Her head leans back as she starts to rub small circles against her clit, swallowing hard as the pleasure slowly but gradually starts to build up.
To Harry, this particular state of [Y/N] urged him to go over to her, rip her panties off and take her right there and then. But Harry started to play this out to his advantage. Within the next few minutes, he knew that she would want him to touch her, knowing that her hands aren’t as good as his. Harry was able to work [Y/N] in ways that nobody had ever before. He knew her body like the back of his hand. But to turn the situation around, Harry stood there just watching and waiting for her to beg for him, only then, and if she was lucky, Harry would give in.
[Y/N]’s breathing became heavier, uneven and a lot hotter. Harry’s name dripping from her lips quietly as she became painfully close to her orgasm. He became just as needy for her, growing harder in his pants had shown it.
“Oh god – fuck.” [Y/N]’s breath hitched in her throat, the pleasure just about making her spill over the edge until she stopped suddenly.
“Harry can you…” Trying to regain a stable breathing pattern back, [Y/N] can barely ask Harry for what she truly wants.
“Can I what baby?” Harry teases her.
“D-Do something please.” [Y/N] begs. There was a split second before he nearly caved into her request, until Harry came up with a brilliant idea.
“Got a better idea – hop off.” Harry says to her.
She trusts his method, jumps off the bench like Harry asked her to as she’s guided back over to the driers. His hands find [Y/N]’s waist, twirling her around as her back is pressed against the drier. Meanwhile Harry’s hot breath is wavering over her neck before he plunges his mouth straight over her skin. It’s a slight form of relief of her sexual frustration, but [Y/N] wanted way more than what Harry was giving to her. Caught up in the prominent thought of wanting Harry touch her badly, his hands dip from her waist to under her thighs, hoisting her up onto the rattling dryer. She was taken by surprise at Harry’s actions, but she gradually understood what he was trying to achieve.
The vibrations of the dryer rattled the lower half of [Y/N]’s body. It was a new sensation, but she learned quick to love it.
“Now, what d’you want me to do kitten?” Harry asks [Y/N] intently, hands rubbing her thighs.
“Want your mouth, please Harry.” [Y/N] pleaded for him.
“Go’head take your shorts off f’me pet.” Harry instructed her.
She complies with his demand and slowly peels them off, leaving herself in just her panties. Harry just about drools over her because of how much he loved her body. Every square inch he wanted to kiss and love on even more the next day. [Y/N] places her shorts to the side and does the same with her worry about someone coming in. Using both of his hands, he pulls [Y/N] closer to the edge of the dryer, but not too much that she wasn’t able to feel the vibrations of the dryer.
As she’s close enough, Harry moves her hands from the small of her back, to her hips giving them a squeeze then slides her panties off. But before Harry wants to please his Missus, he plants more kisses on her neck, making his way across her jaw then meeting her soft lips. Slowly but surely, Harry moves on and succumbs to [Y/N]’s desires.
She props both of her hands behind her for support as Harry kisses her entrance. A hiss escapes her mouth as Harry licks one warm individual stripe up her slit. She hated being teased, but Harry could make it fun and exciting when needed. However at this given rate, [Y/N] just wanted to feel that sweet euphoric release.
Harry starts to become more consistent with his tongue, eating her out like he was deprived of it for weeks. The drier beneath [Y/N]’s body started to take its toll, aiding Harry to help her get to the absolute best orgasm possible. It’s constant vibration shooting through her as she could feel herself coming undone by the second.
“Baby.” [Y/N] moans quietly, at first.
Harry breaks away momentarily, lifting up his index finger, slowly pushing it inside [Y/N] with ease. Her chest rises as her breath is hitched again, taken away by such a simple pleasure. After a few slow pumps Harry, brings his finger to his mouth and licks off her juices before inserting - now two fingers.
“Oh my god - yes!” [Y/N] cries in pleasure.
He dips back down into her, flicking his tongue in all different directions over her clit and at the same time, fucking her with his fingers. Times like these is where [Y/N] was so grateful at how skilful Harry was with his mouth, and of course he had other talents that could make her scream.
“What d’ya say pet?” Harry looks up at her, writhing tremendously on top of the dryer.
“T-Thank you Harry.” She says breathlessly.
“S’more like it, gonna make you feel so good princess.” Harry swears by what he says and [Y/N] knows from experience. If Harry says he going to make her cum hard - he will make her cum hard.
“Fuck, Harry please I’m gonna cum!” She latches a fistful of Harrys curly hair as he relentlessly pumps his fingers in and out of her and licking over and over again on her clit.
“Yes!” [Y/N] cries out one final time as her orgasm bubbles over.
[Y/N]’s thighs were shaking around Harry’s head, not showing her any mercy in stopping.  She cupped her mouth to restrain herself from screaming because that’s what her desire was. [Y/N] felt so overstimulated that it was rolling into another high, but her body could only take so much pleasure. Her body was rocked by a powerful surge of euphoria and bliss, as her silent orgasm came to a sweet end.
Harry slowly pumped his fingers to try and slow everything down for her. He knew she would’ve been pretty tired, so he detached himself from her before sucking on both of his fingers to get taste her. Still trembling on top of the dryer, the machine below her whirls and the mechanical ruckus dies down.
“Oh...my god.” She pants in disbelief.
“So pretty when you cum darling.” Harry grabs her panties from the other dryer, sliding the back up her legs followed by her shorts as she shimmies into them.
“S’pecially on my face.” He added.
“Haaarrrryyyyy.” She whines in embarrassment, covering her face with her hands.
“S’true pet, not even gonna ask if you like the dryer.” Harry said with a smug look.
