Ann-Margret first wore this adorable ruffled pink blouse with matching pink pants as Kim McAfee in the 1963 film adaptation of the musical Bye Bye Birdie. Three years later, in 1966, an extra wore the ensemble in an episode of The Monkees entitled Your Friendly Neighborhood Kidnappers.

The original Broadway production of “Bye Bye Birdie,” starring Chita Rivera and Dick Van Dyke, opened at the Martin Beck Theatre on April 14, 1960.

The recent character asks I've been getting about Grease, and the passing of Chita Rivera, who created leading roles in both West Side Story and Bye Bye Birdie, made me think of this subject.

Of course all three shows are very different from each other – and only two out of the three are actually about teens, since Bye Bye Birdie has adult protagonists – but the common factor of '50s teen culture does link them.

By the way, it says something both about the tradition of "Dawson Casting" and how quickly "girls" became "women" in '50s/'60s culture that West Side Story premiered just three years before Bye Bye Birdie, yet Chita Rivera played the "teen" role of Anita in the former (at age 24) but the "adult" role of Rosie in the latter (at 27).
