Deforestation in the Amazon increased 29% over last year: Here’s how you can help.
- Look for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification on wood and wood products.
- Educate your friends, family, and community about how our everyday actions can impact forests around the world.
- Reuse, Reduce, Recycle.
- Give your car a rest and walk, cycle, or even take public transport. This will save petrol, which is made from oil and comes from below the ground and so, like plastic, can cause the destruction of rainforests. You will also be reducing pollution and carbon dioxide emissions and therefore helping to combat global warming.
- Volunteer Work. You don’t have to travel to Brazil to volunteer - Many corporations are looking for volunteers online.
- Buy organic products.
- Do not use firewood to heat up your fireplaces.
- Question everything: If corporations have the power to destroy the world’s forests, they also have the ability to help save them. So learn what steps corporations are taking to stop deforestation and support those corporations. Those who aren’t taking steps, well - Protest. Stop buying their produts, share with others. Send messages: On twitter, on instagram, on facebook. Flood them. Call. Go to the streets. Use your voice.
- Stand with Indigenous people: When their rights are respected, forests stay standing.
- Unless there’s concrete proof that it’s been sustainably produced, do not buy palm oil.
- Donate. I’ve seen some people saying they only donate to local organizations because they don’t “believe” in large ones but please don’t. Helping your community is amazing but sometimes other places in the world need more help. So, yes, donate! I know what it’s like to be broke but you don’t have to donate large amounts. Every cent counts. There is, of couse, Greenpeace, but there’s also Amazon Watch (they also help Indigenous people!), Cool Earth, WWF*, Amazon Aid Foundation, Rainforest Concern and many more.
- Go vegetarian! One year without meat saves more trees than one year without paper. Even if you want to go full vegetarian, eat vegetarian meals as often as possible, or at least:
- Do not buy meat products sourced from land where forests have been cleared.
* WWF supports the wildlife and when you donate, you usually choose which animal you’re going to help. So if you want to help the Amazon, adopt the Amazon river dolphin (Boto cor de rosa) or other amazon natives like the macaw or the jaguar.
