CNC is Computer Numerical Control. These are various machining tools that are guided by a computer, and they have been around since about the middle of last century. I first saw one of these when I was in elementary school and I visited my mom’s friend Bill’s machine shop. He manufactured metal parts for various industrial purposes, and parts for his son’s Formula One race car (I used to love hanging out in the pits at these races at Riverside raceway).
When I went to Sheridan Lumber the first time and was given a flyer for a shop that has a CNC router, I had the idea to make curves where there were previously right angles on the original Device.
The thick maple/mahogany wood sandwiches (that had the crazy number of clamps) are what these shapes will be cut out of. I’ll also be making some small mahogany cylinders where they were previously PVC (the Linear Motion Transfer Cylinders).
I thought we would be doing the cutting today, but Manuel needs time to get all the information into the CAD program. This is a bit more of a complicated project then they usually do there, which is just cutting shapes out of thin sheets of wood for things like wall designs and other interior home type stuff.
When he's ready, I'll go in for the actual cutting, which I am excited to see happen.

ok yeah XD tbf i didn't either until more recently. like, i'd seen them, but i didnt know what they were called. it's a Computer Numerical Control machine. Most commonly, in this setting at least, we're talking about CNC router for cutting out a pattern that you program into wood, metal, etc. like an embroidery machine making a pattern, or a cricut machine cutting out Small craft projects. CNCs are that, but big enough to cut out an entire plywood sheet. I've never heard anyone refer to them by their full name, not even with "router" on the end, it's just CNC. it would be a weird thing for a cosplayer to have, but typical for a maker.
related, but adora's laser cutter i feel like is pretty instinctual? but it's literally the exact same concept. you put in a sheet of material (in this case, you've got a midsized sheet between what a cnc can do and what a cricut can do), you program it to cut/engrave a specified shape, and it does it automatically for you with perfect precision, so pieces that need to be snuggly fit (or that you need a lot of, say if you're making something with six identical sides) will all match specifications. specifically, you can look at a glowforge for an example, although they call themselves a 3d laser printer for some asinine reason. laser printers still use ink, and 3d printers build a 3d object out of a resin (although there are multiple kinds). the glowforge literally cuts out 2d sheets with a laser (LIKE A LASER CUTTER) and then you could assemble them into a 3d object, but you dont have to.
most cosplayers i know have a cricut (if they have any of these types of machines, anyway), which is the lowest end of these types of products and can handle things about the size of a sheet of paper, depending on the model you get and how large the machine is. They're tabletop machines tho, usually a few hundred dollars. i know cricut does some shitty things with the programs required to get the design into your cricut machine, though. and who knows, glowforge could too, but thats so fucking expensive i dont know of a lot of people with one XD

My cure for depression. 
I am too excited to sleep, and it is past my bedtime. 
I finally got the laser working on my little CNC.

I am still working with the settings, as you can see in this 3x5 card with an accurate centimeter ruler burnt through, but this is so cool. The top one, that did not entirely burn through, was when I had my Y-axis inverted, so it was printed on the other side of the card. The hole in the lower left was when I had the laser set too strong and moving too slowly, so it popped a few flames before I could stop it. (Yes, the room smells of burnt paper now. And of burnt pine, since I used a block of wood to protect the CNC bed.)
I got the laser with the machine, nearly four years ago, but I could never get it to work (one little jumper setting was all, and I only changed the setting today on a whim) (okay, it was yesterday now). I raided the stepper cables from the machine to temporarily replace those on a printer, but I needed to get it working again today.
I have a million projects I have been waiting to do. The tests above are relevant because I am making a work table for another tool, and I want to have a ruler etched into it. (Oh dear. I just thought that it would look better and would contrast better in white. So I had to look up cutting silk screen stencils with the laser - there is so much information on the subject that I know I will be doing that soon. But I will stick with the direct laser etching for this project because accuracy is more important than aesthetics.)
I have had pepakura projects waiting for the laser. Also, after I expand the size of the CNC (it is a 3018, which means it is 300mm x 180mm), I can use it to cut patterns for sewing.
I had designed the work table to be etched with a router bit on the CNC machine, but that would have taken hours. With the laser, it will be done in minutes. The 4cm ruler above took maybe two minutes, and the ruler for the table is 10.5in (but only divided into quarters).
I could barely tear myself away to make and eat dinner tonight. And now I have to go to bed. I do not want to. I want to stay up to play with my toys.
