How Fixed Wireless Access Is Changing Gaming Acceleration

At its headquarters in Riyadh, Zain KSA, a prominent Saudi digital service provider, successfully carried out the first joint verification of Fixed Wireless Access Gaming Acceleration in partnership with Huawei. This proof of concept (POC) ushers in a new age of distinctive wireless home internet experiences by correctly identifying gaming services and successfully ensuring user experience and perception.
One method that expands fixed broadband connections is called Fixed Wireless Access. In order to give residential users network access, it uses Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) to collect mobile signals from 5G base stations and transform them into Wi-Fi. Given Saudi Arabia’s distinct topography and abundance of indoor entertainment choices, Fixed Wireless Access immediately attracted a sizable household user base when it first entered the market. It provides quick and easy network connections while addressing the difficulties associated with implementing conventional fixed-line fiber optic networks.
According to statistics, there are more than 25 million gamers in Saudi Arabia, and their needs for a high-quality home gaming network are growing. A targeted improvement to the present FWA solution is the Gaming Acceleration feature, Service Turbo, which was jointly confirmed by Zain KSA and Huawei. The proof of concept effectively showed that the gaming service’s fast speed and low latency were effectively ensured under full network load (simulated using SpeedTest), with a 90% decrease in latency and a 70% decrease in jitter in comparison to situations without this feature.
The slicing or dedicated bearer is the main method used to implement the Service Turbo technology. Accurately detecting gaming traffic, Huawei 5G CPE Pro 5 attaches the game slicing or initiates the creation of dedicated bearers in the Huawei Core Network and RAN. This guarantees that network resources are scheduled and allocated for gaming traffic in a priority manner. What is fixed wireless access?
Without the need of physical cables, fixed wireless access (FWA) is a wireless technology that offers high-speed internet access to a designated area. Fixed Wireless Access, also referred to as fixed wireless internet, connects a customer’s location to the internet using radio waves.
Fixed Wireless Access is an economical and effective substitute for conventional telephone or cable connections. It’s perfect for businesses without standard broadband or for reaching underserved or remote areas. In the event of a network failure, FWA can also be utilized as a backup solution.
FWA uses several subscriber units dispersed over a large region and a base station linked to a fixed network. Customers can connect to the network by using radio waves to communicate with the subscriber units from the base station. Typically, rooftop antennas installed on fixed objects like buildings or poles establish the radio waves.
Although Fixed Wireless Access is compatible with both 4G LTE and 5G technologies, 5G FWA is especially useful due to its fast speeds and low latency, which are on par with fiber optic connections.
Fixed wireless access architecture
Fixed wireless access (FWA) architecture is a system that links residences and commercial buildings to the internet via radio waves:
The base station
A stationary network-connected station that uses radio waves to communicate with subscriber units
Units of subscribers
Wireless devices that function as tiny cell towers are dispersed across a wide region.
Equipment on Customer Premises (CPE)
A device that receives data from the base station and is installed either inside or outside a residence or place of business
Modern
An apparatus within the structure that transforms the CPE signal into Wi-Fi for numerous devices
What Is Fixed Wireless Internet?
Fixed Wireless Access is an easy-to-use solution that doesn’t need any wire or drilling. Because it’s inexpensive and easy to execute, it’s a fantastic choice for companies that relocate regularly. In rural areas or places with unpredictable weather, FWA can also be utilized as a backup to wired networks.

Virtual Customer Premises Equipment (vCPE): Enhancing Flexibility and Scalability in Telecom Networks

Virtual Customer Premises Equipment (vCPE) represents a significant shift in network management and service delivery. Traditionally, Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) refers to the hardware installed at the customer's site, such as routers, switches, and firewalls. In contrast, vCPE virtualizes these functions, shifting them from physical devices to virtual instances running on shared infrastructure.
The primary advantage of vCPE lies in its flexibility and scalability. By virtualizing network functions, vCPE allows service providers to deliver network services more efficiently. Instead of deploying physical devices at each customer location, service providers can use virtual instances running in centralized data centers or cloud environments. This approach simplifies deployment, reduces hardware costs, and enables more rapid scaling to meet changing demands.
One of the key technologies underpinning vCPE is Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). NFV decouples network functions from hardware, allowing them to be implemented as software running on virtual machines or containers. This separation facilitates easier updates and upgrades, as network functions can be modified or replaced without the need for physical hardware changes. NFV also supports dynamic scaling, where resources can be adjusted based on real-time demand, improving operational efficiency.
Another significant aspect of vCPE is its integration with Software-Defined Networking (SDN). SDN enhances network management by separating the control plane from the data plane, allowing for centralized control of network resources. When combined with vCPE, SDN enables more granular and flexible network configurations, enhancing the ability to optimize network performance and troubleshoot issues.
Security is a critical consideration in the deployment of vCPE. While virtualizing network functions can enhance flexibility, it also introduces new challenges in ensuring data protection and privacy. Implementing robust security measures, such as encryption and access controls, is essential to mitigate risks associated with virtualized environments. Additionally, regular updates and monitoring are necessary to address potential vulnerabilities.
The benefits of vCPE extend beyond cost savings and operational efficiency. It also supports advanced service offerings, such as customized network services for specific customer needs and the ability to quickly deploy new applications. This agility allows service providers to respond to market demands more effectively and offer differentiated services that can attract and retain customers.
Despite these advantages, the transition to vCPE requires careful planning and management. Service providers must consider factors such as interoperability with existing infrastructure, integration with other network management systems, and the need for adequate training and support for their teams.
In summary, Virtual Customer Premises Equipment (vCPE) represents a transformative approach to network service delivery. By leveraging virtualization technologies, vCPE offers greater flexibility, scalability, and efficiency compared to traditional hardware-based CPE. As organizations continue to adopt digital transformation strategies, vCPE is poised to play a crucial role in modernizing network infrastructure and enhancing service capabilities.

Scope of the Report of 5G Fixed Wireless Access
Fixed wireless access is defined as a connection that provides broadband access through mobile network-enabled customer premises equipment (CPE). This includes various form factors of CPEs, such as indoor (desktop and window) and outdoor (rooftop and wall-mounted). It does not include portable battery-based Wi-Fi routers or dongles. Fixed wireless access (FWA) connections are forecast to grow threefold and reach close to 160 million by the end of 2025, accounting for 25 percent of total mobile network data traffic globally. There were an estimated 51 million FWA connections globally at the end of 2019, FWA traffic is predicted to grow to reach 53EB in 2025, accounting for 25 percent of global mobile network data traffic, there will be close to 160 million FWA connections by the end of 2025, providing access to approximately 570 million individuals. There are three main factors that drive the FWA market and the uptake of connections. First, demand from consumers and businesses for digital services continues, driving the need for broadband connectivity. Second, FWA delivered over 4G or 5G is an increasingly cost-efficient broadband alternative in areas with limited availability of fixed services such as DSL, cable, or fiber. Increasing capacity allowed by greater spectrum allocations and technology advancements for 4G and 5G networks is driving higher network efficiency in terms of the cost per delivered gigabyte. Third, governments are fueling broadband connectivity through programs and subsidies, as it is considered vital for digitalization efforts and economic growth.
10th June 2020, Nokia had announced new research highlighting 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) as the most desirable 5G use case amongst consumers globally.
