Advising Meeting #2 Report Form
NAME: Michelle Chan
ADVISOR: Montse
MEETING DATE & TIME: Thursday 4/5/18 4:30pm
In 3-4 sentences, please describe what was discussed during your meeting.
I tried explaining the plot again and she gave me some feedback on it. I told and showed her what I envisioned would happen in the scenes.  She asked whether I would be able to have a finished product in time and I said maybe, and that I was having a harder time with the animation. She also asked who was better at animating between us two partners, and I answered that I wasn’t sure.
In 3-4 sentences, please explain what the next steps you will take with your project will be.
My next steps include composing/performing the background music, which involves using a music editing software or recording playing an instrument. Most important is finishing the animation roughs for sequences 3 and 4, since the product could simply be an animatic. Then, I need to animate the first sequence and check up with Lily.
Please use the space below to indicate any further questions, concerns, or confusions that were NOT addressed during the meeting.
May we have good quality paper with which to print our concept art?

CPSA 250: Individual Capstone Research Practicum Learning Agreement
Name: Sarah Kim
Advisor: Harold Burgess
Weekly Meeting Time: Wednesdays 5:00-5:50 PM
Purpose/Mission Statement: Put this in the form of a few sentences about what you hope to accomplish this semester. What will the end result of your project be? What will you learn or gain from the experience? Do you have other goals?
My goal for this project is to prepare and perform a Sophomore Violin Recital.  After this project, I would have learned how navigate the recital booking software for the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, three new complete pieces, how to collaborate with fellow music colleagues in the recital preparation process, and how to order catering for an estimated audience size.  Finally, by receiving feedback from important music faculty and music major colleagues, I would have the opportunity to learn the mistakes from this experience, and to ultimately better my performance energy for future recitals.
Learning Objectives:
These are more specific than the mission statement. Be sure your objectives are clearly stated and respond to what you expect to do, learn, and experience as a result this project. Please list at least three. These should scaffold toward your final project.
I will reserve the Leah Smith Recital and Lecture Hall for the performance and the Student Lounge for the reception.
I will plan a recital program in consultation with my private teacher, Dr. Stern, and my capstone faculty advisor, Harold Burgess.
I will learn the following three new pieces:
Johann Sebastian Bach Sonata no. 1 in g minor
Jean Sibelius Violin Concerto
Josef Suk 4 Pieces for Violin and Piano.
I will prepare a 30 minute reception taking place after the recital, with light refreshments.
Workshop Process:
How will you complete the project? What research or preliminary work is required? What materials will you need? What steps will you take to create the finished project? How will you perform or present your work?
How will you document your work and research in your process binder/notebook?
I will complete this project over a span of three months, January through March, in order to appropriately prepare the repertoire and organize the logistics of the concert. The preliminary work of booking the recital hall and reception area, as well as the planning of repertoire was completed before the start of the new year to ensure maximum time for solely music practice and preparation.  In order to finish the project, I plan to prepare the assigned repertoire, perform the recital, and hold the post-performance reception.  This project will be performed on April 5th at 7:30 PM in Leah Smith Hall.
I will document my work and research in my process binder by posting audio and video clips on my Tumblr page.  These clips will show the gradual evolution of the music preparation process, from sight-reading the music to the final performance.
Resources:
Please include a list of resources you have used/may use in the planning and execution of your project. You may include books, websites, music, video, personal communication, etc.

CPSA 250: College Park Arts Scholars Capstone: Solo Project, Spring 2018
 Name: Vince De Guzman
 Advisor: Harold
Weekly Meeting Time: 12:20 pm
Purpose/Mission Statement: Put this in the form of a few sentences about what you hope to accomplish this semester. What will the end result of your project be? What will you learn or gain from the experience? Do you have other goals?
This semester I hope to accomplish something I have never done before. I have no experience with the visual arts or with programming myself with no direction. I want to create an android app that combines these different passions of mine, art and programming. The result is an app where people can create different emojis to use in messaging and texting. I will learn the difficulties of creating both art and programming as these two skills have different difficulties to them. I would also like to publish this app to the app store and maybe improve upon it in the future.
 Learning Objectives:
These are more specific than the mission statement. Be sure your objectives are clearly stated and respond to what you expect to do, learn, and experience as a result this project. Please list at least three. These should scaffold toward your final project.
Learn how to create an     android app
Have a finished product at     Arts Fest with a demonstration and if people want to they can download it     on their own android phone
Learn different methods to     create pixel art
I want to experience the     final product coming together displaying my passions, the arts and     programming
 Workshop Process:
How will you complete the project? What research or preliminary work is required? What materials will you need? What steps will you take to create the finished project? How will you perform or present your work?
How will you document your work and research in your process binder/notebook?
I will complete the project by first familiarizing myself with the software I’m using, Android Studio. I will go through many tutorials and create the UI for my project. Afterwards, I will focus on creating my own pixel art emojis drawing inspiration from many different artists and the way they used pixel art to capture different emotions. Finally, I will combine both the UI and my art style to create a finished product. At Arts Fest I want to have a downloadable app, so people can download the app if they want to, but I would also have my laptop showcasing the app and the code if people are interested in that. In my process binder, I will show all my inspiration and weekly updates on the state of the project, whether it is improving the UI or drawing different emojis.

Final Reflection
CPSA 250:      Individual Capstone
1) Staying consistent and scheduling were the most difficult aspects of my capstone. I struggled to meet the dates I set for my self to paint, because of other engagements (e.g. major courses, assignments, etc). I also found that I needed to change the composition of my pieces (three times total for each). For one of the pieces, Living Room, I completely removed a central figure in favor of a shoulder-up self-portrait, which altered the meaning of the painting and required more time to complete it. While these changes were stressful, they also allowed the paintings to evolve in tandem with my own personal growth and interests.
 2) In retrospect, I did not focus nearly as much on my childhood visual influences as I had hoped to initially. I think that I naturally gravitated to new sources of artistic materials, because these paintings required new technical perspectives. My childhood became one of the central focuses, as opposed to technique, which was originally what I had planned to be the main focus. I also did not update my process binder/tumblr as frequently as I had initially described in my learning objectives. The objectives I did fulfill are as follows: two 2ftx3ft paintings completed, background research completed, growth and healing, and the collection of various materials/artistic works.
 3) The weekly class meetings were helpful in that they provided more in depth information on the requirements for each assignment/capstone. I also appreciated hearing feed back on my capstone progress, as well as seeing the progress and process of my peers. Classes served as a reminder for assignments that were coming up (which is good for forgetful and scattered people like myself). For next year, it might be more helpful if Art Scholars reduced the use of tumblr. Its interface is confusing and not very efficient.
 4) My project is proof that I am capable of taking on long-term challenges, which was something I doubted about myself in the past. It required that I put in hours that I usually try to avoid. I am also satisfied with how I reacted to overcoming this particular obstacle. Instead of dismissing it, because it does not hold up against other projects or whatever other reason, I did not forgot the amount of effort I put into my project.
 5) They say hindsight is 50/50, and that is certainly true. If I had the opportunity to do something similar to this project, I would spend more time in the planning stage and take time to reflect on and document the project more closely. I feel that reflecting on and documenting my progress would have eliminated many of the problems that I came across. For example, perhaps I would not have had to change my composition so many times, or I might have been able to narrow my focus earlier in the process.
 6) My advice to upcoming students is the same as the students’ advice that came before me: start early and follow through on specific goals you set for yourself. By starting earlier, you have more time to fix problems and change the course of what your project is, if you feel that is necessary. Specific goals are essential because they hold you accountable for the progress of your project. It is easy to say you will have a certain part done by ‘around April-ish,’ but that is hardly helpful when April 30th rolls around, and you have not finished what you needed to get done.

We plan to expose the underrepresented beauty within colored women using visual art and cinematography (Alexia), as well as photography and poetry (Merissa). By conducting these interviews, both of us want to learn more about the struggles we face, but through the life of others; we want to understand the perspectives of our peers.
Learning Objectives:
These are more specific than the mission statement. Be sure your objectives are clearly stated and respond to what you expect to do, learn, and experience as a result this project. Please list at least three. These should scaffold toward your final project.
Merissa:
I, along with Alexia, will conduct interviews with 15 women of color.
I will photograph these 15 women of color.
I will use editing software, such as Photoshop, to enhance their natural beauty.
I will collect the best images into a 15-20 based off the interviews and my own personal feelings of the idea of representation.
Alexia:
I, along with Merissa, will conduct interviews with 15 women of color.
I will take what the women told us to create individual watercolor portraits
Depending on what they say, I may or may not include other elements in these portraits.
I will edit the videos captured during the interview and include voice overs from Merissa’s poems, creating a “behind the scenes”-like video lasting at least 4 minutes.
Workshop Process:
How will you complete the project? What research or preliminary work is required? What materials will you need? What steps will you take to create the finished project? How will you perform or present your work?
We have created a google doc where we documented all our preliminary ideas (i.e. people to ask, possible shooting locations, emails to send out, who said yes or no, etc.)
We created an excel document where we made a sign-up sheet available: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PGp7Hviv5DCxJRIntE5vPUBSnTem3laI_KvGFfNVT7A/edit?usp=sharing
We will do research on things how colorism, representation issues outside of black women, the affect the media has on self-esteem, etc.
We need two separate cameras for photography and video, an external sound recorder, external hard drives for extra space, tripods for the cameras, batteries, access to photo and video editing software, watercolor paint and brushes, paper, pen and inspiration.
.
How will you document your work and research in your process binder/notebook?
We will both take process pictures and screenshots of our work and post them to our respective Tumblr websites.
Please include a list of resources you have used/may use in the planning and execution of your project. You may include books, websites, music, video, personal communication, etc.

Learning Agreement
CPSA 250: College Park Arts Scholars Capstone: Solo Project, Spring 2017
 Name:  Chyna Sequeira
 Advisor: Kenna
Weekly Meeting Time:
Purpose/Mission Statement: Put this in the form of a few sentences about what you hope to accomplish this semester. What will the end result of your project be? What will you learn or gain from the experience? Do you have other goals?
The end result of my project will be a couple of oil paintings and charcoal drawings of hands. I will gain a better understanding of what it is that I find most interesting or important about hands. I will also push myself to explore my artistic style and abilities by focusing on one subject.
Learning Objectives:
These are more specific than the mission statement. Be sure your objectives are clearly stated and respond to what you expect to do, learn, and experience as a result this project. Please list at least three. These should scaffold toward your final project.
 1.     I will make two oil paintings of either my hands or someone's hands that inspire me.
2.     I will make two charcoal drawings of my hands or someone's hands that inspire me.
3.     I will explore different ways of displaying hands through the use of two mediums and different styles/colors.
Workshop Process:
How will you complete the project? What research or preliminary work is required? What materials will you need? What steps will you take to create the finished project? How will you perform or present your work?
I will complete this project by drawing on works from art history that appeal to me and fit the theme. I already have taken a couple of pictures of paintings that I've seen at museums. I will need oil paint, charcoal, and the corresponding paper. I will make all of the pieces by the end of spring break. I'll either make prints of my work or display the originals at arts fest.
How will you document your work and research in your process binder/notebook?
I'll take pictures of the drawing/painting process. I'll post reference pictures. I'll make note of any difficulties that I encounter. I'll also make note of any revelations that I have. If I have a thought/ idea pertaining to the project throughout the day I will post it in the process binder as opposed to keeping it in my notes like I usually do.

Final Learning Agreement
Sorry this is late.
CPSA 250: College Park Arts Scholars Capstone: Solo Project, Spring 2018
Name: Michelle Chan
Advisor: Montse
Weekly Meeting Time: 5:00-5:50pm Wednesday
Purpose/Mission Statement: Put this in the form of a few sentences about what you hope to accomplish this semester. What will the end result of your project be? What will you learn or gain from the experience? Do you have other goals?
I hope to learn how to animate in 2D in a frame by frame style. The end result will be a 5-10 minute animated short with background music. There will at least be one scene finished about Moira and Ander meeting, defeating a dragon corpse, and setting off on an adventure to find a baby dragon. I will have learned how to work collaboratively and on a long term project.
Learning Objectives: These are more specific than the mission statement. Be sure your objectives are clearly stated and respond to what you expect to do, learn, and experience as a result this project. Please list at least three. These should scaffold toward your final project.
I will learn how to storyboard scenes so they are clear in conveying the story.
I will draw those storyboards as roughs for the animation, then clean them.
I will learn how to time movements so the actions are fluid and impactful.
I will compose and/or perform background music using instruments or a program.
I hope to convey a story that is meaningful to myself, my partner and the viewers.
I will communicate timely and effectively with my partner so each of us will have somewhat equal parts throughout this process.
Workshop Process:
How will you complete the project? What research or preliminary work is required? What materials will you need? What steps will you take to create the finished project? How will you perform or present your work?
The preliminary work required is finding ideas for settings and objects, learning how to storyboard and animate, and developing the fictional world. I have watched videos to learn about storyboarding and animation. I will finish drawing up the concept art and drawing the storyboards, then share them with my partner for her to draw the backgrounds. Next, we will render the storyboards as roughs and animate them. I will compose and perform music afterwards to match in time with the storyboards. We will present our work on a computer or on screen during ArtsFest.
How will you document your work and research in your process binder/notebook?
I will upload pictures or screenshots of the storyboards, upload music loops, add links to research, and share GIFs and screenshots of the animation process.
Resources:
Please include a list of resources you have used/may use in the planning and execution of your project. You may include books, websites, music, video, personal communication, etc.

Final Reflection
Final Reflection
What was the most challenging aspect of completing your project, and why? (This might be technical aspects, time constraints, problems that arose, etc.—be honest, this is your space to reflect!)
Communicating and staying accountable with a partner was the most challenging aspect. A lot of the time I spent was trying to explain my ideas more clearly and stressing over her part, which I only ever saw in the presentations apart from the first rough line art. Even for the written portions like the Learning Agreement, I have no idea what she wanted to learn from this project and whether any of her objectives coincided with mine. Two weeks or so before Arts Fest, she finally told me that she had not realized that she had not been sharing her backgrounds with me the whole time. But even then, she still didn’t share them with me, so I had to put everything together right beforehand. On my end, I did not start the animation until a month before Arts Fest and was hesitant to keep her accountable because she said that this semester was busy for her.
Looking at your learning agreement(s) on ELMS, how do you think you succeeded (or not) in completing your Learning Objectives? Which ones did you fulfill? Which ones did you not fulfill? Why?
I did learn how to storyboard scenes, though they may not have been especially clear in conveying the story since I felt rushed for time and skipped the step to go straight to roughs for the last scenes. I did draw them as roughs but did not clean or edit them, again because of time constraints. I learned how to compose music using a software in the Music Technology Lab but did not end up syncing the music to the animation due to time constraints. The story was meaningful to myself, but probably not to my partner. Perhaps she also felt like I was trying too hard to make it my project, and so did not feel motivated to contribute her own passion into it, as evident by the lack of personal references or inspirations that I had requested in the backgrounds of the house. The viewers did not understand the story either because for the Arts Fest coffeehouse, the story was incomplete. At the Academic Showcase, someone asked me, “How evident did you intend the message to be?”
What were the most helpful aspects of the (semi) weekly class meetings? What would you like to see added or subtracted for next year?
The Presentations and Critical Response Feedback were the most helpful aspects. I enjoyed seeing how everyone else was developing their cool ideas and liked being able to share a bit of the process. The presentations also helped me stay accountable. For next year, I would like to see more time devoted to figuring out how to improve our presentation at Arts Fest and implementing those improvements.
What part of the project were you most proud of? Why?
I am most proud of the title card animation because it was the only thing I actually animated and timed. The title card reflects a core mystery of the world- Chimo is the name of the baby dragon, symbol of life, light, and hope that the characters are trying to find. I am also proud of the animatic GIF of Ander and Loo at the base of the dragon hill. At that time, I wanted to separate myself from the discouraging status of the main animation, so I drew it up in 30 minutes.
What part of the project would you have changed if you could? Why?
I would have changed the story. From the beginning, I thought it was not suitable for a short animation, but I wanted to use the style and characters so it would be easier for my partner to animate with them. And so with the style and characters came the world and story. But in the end, the simpler style was not easier for her to animate.
I would not have partnered with someone else. I would not want to push my ideas unto theirs if it will squash their creativity.
If you had to offer advice to next year’s Capstone students, what would it be?
Do not procrastinate. Work on the project everyday for at least an hour in a material way (for me it was drawing). Figure out the concepts and ideas before the beginning of the semester. Be able to explain the ideas clearly and check with other people to see if they understand them.
