It's finished! This is my finished sculpture of a coral reef undergoing the bleaching process. This is what will be displayed at ArtsFest at Maryland Day. I also made a little storybook that tells the story of a coral being bleached.

Nearly Done.
I’ve finally finished the center self portrait, and will move on to the last stages of defining edges and clarifying shapes. I plan to: a) darken the grid pattern in the right bottom corner, b) locate places where the paint is thin and fill it in with some cadmium red hue, c) add a few lines to the piano, d) define the chair with similar lines to the piano, and e) give the frame for the painting with the light blue figure a heavier outline.

March 18th, 2017: These are some of my favorite pictures from my last weekend of photoshoots. I have not edited them yet, but I doubt they will need much editing. Each of these women were so much fun shoot, like all 10 of the other women. What I think makes these pictures really special to me is the fact that they were all shot in the same day, and even though Alexia and I were extremely tired by the end of it, we just had such a good energy thought out all of it. I can’t wait to edit them and see the final products.

I’ve been trying to decide how I want to display my work at Arts Fest. I’m on the fence between having the works there or taking pictures of the works and having them printed to add a photography aspect which I’ve wanted to explore. I’ve shown in other posts snapshots of hands in whole paintings. I like the look of details of paintings and statues. I was thinking about adding that aspect in and showing details of my drawings and paintings. It’s also a way for me to get comfortable looking up close at my pieces. Usually I don’t like to get too close because I feel like it looks better from farther seats. However, when I took a snapshot of the hands in my self portrait oil painting I loved seeing the imperfections and brush strokes.

Writing update, Current Struggles: I’m trying to world build without slowing down the action. But I’m also trying to increase the tension and the pace as the story progresses, not startle the reader by throwing them into drama. It’s a hard balancing act, especially since I’m writing fantasy and there’s so much information to impart. The culture, religion, backstories, physical spaces, relationships between characters, while also keeping the plot moving forward.
But on the upside, writing this week has also been a lot of fun. Here’s a snippet of the story so far. (Disclaimer: I may take this out or change it in revision.)
“She pleaded, begged. Her eyelids fluttered and then closed under the pressure of dirt caving in over her body, packing her in, burying her alive, while the Curse drained her of her blood. She couldn’t open her mouth, her eyes, couldn’t move her hands. So she whispered in her mind with everything she had left.
My blood, my magic, for yours. Just this once, I promise, I promise.
Sing us a song, young witch, oh yes, sing us a song. Your words will allow your blood to live even if you should die.
     You want…you want a song?
Oh yes, oh yes, a witch song, a witch song. Sing us a song witch, sing your blood to life.
In her mind, Jo hummed a song that Sofi often sang to Kiera, the first song that came to mind.
If the trees should whistle, should whistle, should whistle, young witch, what should you do, you do, you do? Why give it some water, some water of course.
And if the water should spill, should spill, should spill? Why bless it with magic, with magic, of course.
And should the blessing not work, not work, not work? Why go find a charm, a spell, a chant, young witch.
And if you don’t know a charm, a chant, a spell, a wish? Why ask your clan, your home, your heart, young witch
And if you don’t have a home, a heart, a clan, a love? Why witch, maybe you’re not a witch at all, at all.
Maybe you’re not a witch at all.”

CPSA Process Progress Reflection
After looking through everyone’s pages, I find it really interesting how different each of our capstones are. If I were to make this more personal, I feel as if they all capture us as people and who we are as artists. I can clearly see the personality and talents of my peers through what they’ve shown. Speaking of talent, it’s just so crazy how I have the honor to share a class with such amazing artists of all mediums! Aren’t they just amazing???
It was nice getting feedback from my group members as well. Because they had questions with our presentation, I want to make it clear that we’ll be showing both a projection of our video (shows the BTS scenes action of our capstone) and a table holding the physical aspects of our capstone (i.e. my watercolor paintings and Merissa’s photography).

It’s on the last picture, but credit to theoatmeal.com
perfectly applicable and simplified via chubby marshmallow characters. Big labels had a choke hold on artists basically because of their leverage with marketing, and because of that they could make it so artists would only make pennies on the dollar from their own record sales. Now that the internet lets anyone reach a huge audience through social media and essentially be their own marketing team, that leverage the the major labels had is sort of lost and a lot of the reason people would sign with those major labels is disappearing.

Mvmt 2 completed?!
https://www.noteflight.com/scores/view/3d0370b60378674e263ee9c07d4d51e139aaa03e It's pretty much done. Feedback is greatly appreciated! So, how did I do on being angry? Could be angrier indeed... Symbolic things worth noting. look at the motifs. some of them are from the first movement.I gave them all namesred is "dead"- pitches DEAD of course.blue is "resolute"- symbolizes the desire to improve ochre/mustard is "time"- scale degrees ti to me in some important key.magenta is " memory"- symbolizes remembering back to a time before the griefpurple is "no"- every time you see it, it's the character saying "no" symbolizes denial. Green is when something about one of the motifs is off, perhaps the character is lying to themselves (The person that caused me grief is an oboe player, thus the oboe in this piece does more green than the other instruments) cello solo is basically you/ the protagonist/ the thought process e.g measures 100-107 the protagonist starts remembering the past (memory motif) and so the oboe is messing up your resolution.Throughout the piece, you want to be in D minor. The oboe is playing your resolution in the parallel major, making you feel like it's okay. But it's not okay. It's all weird and stuff. I feel like there's a better word than motif for the longer melodic lines. "Themes" perhaps? If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, anything else constructive, please talk to me I'm super glad to talk about my composition!

Process of Defining the Goals of Redesign:
As Brianna and I begin to diagram and define our redesign objectives, we take a look at other museums that are similar to the Guggenheim with certain differences. The Greenland National Gallery of Art is circular is form, but unlike the Guggenheim, it uses layers that extend below the ground level to maximize the available space. The levels are connected with a continuous ramp system that is similar to the linear gallery effect that is also in the Guggenheim. By studying the ways that the two museums create a system of linear galleries, we can decide if the upward continuation of levels is more effective than the downward descend or vice versa. We are hoping to create a redesign idea that plays on a communal feeling while preserving a sense of mystery as one proceeds through the space.

This is a piece from the African Art museum that I plan to add to my collections of pieces from Ghana. These are weights from the Akan tribe of the country Ghana. They were for measuring gold dust, and they were once traded throughout all of present day Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Some weight forms were selected just for their beauty or to display the owner's status. Many of the weights evoke Akan proverbs, meanings varying with time and place.

Stumped
I have discovered that halfway through the semester is when I really start to drag, both academically and creatively. I’m finding it harder than I thought it would be to finish my capstone project because I cannot motivate myself to do anything that isn’t due like the next day. It is kind of like writer’s block, but different. I’m really really trying to get over it though. Now that I’m on spring break, I have a lot to accomplish to get done on time. I think that I just need to push myself a little harder to start working on it. Hopefully once I do start working, it will be easier to make some progress. I think other art scholars are experiencing the same thing, but I don’t know. Hopefully it isn’t just me dragging and making slow progress.

Capstone Process: Reflection
I’m still mostly in the process of researching surrealism, specifically different famous surrealist collage artists, such as Man Ray and Jesse Treece. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to get a ton of practice in with creating my own collages, as I have yet to get a bunch of magazines to practice with. It’s kind of surprising how expensive magazines are. However, I’ve recently found a Scientology magazine with some interesting images in it that I am excited to try collaging with! I’ve only gotten to practice with National Geographic magazines, so I’d really like to try collaging with magazines all covering topics very different from one another (e.g., People, Time, Vogue, Rolling Stone, etc.)

Reflection #1
I think I’ve finally caught my first case of artist’s block in this process. I haven’t looked at my paintings in a week, because I do not know how to move forward. Before, my ideas felt new and exciting, but now I am unenthusiastic about even the idea of picking up a brush. I am being dramatic, of course, but any artist knows that a creative and emotional roadblock can feel devastating, especially considering how invested I felt in the beginning. Fortunately, I am on break this week, so I will have a chance to collect my thoughts and come up with a new plan of action. I am going to take a closer look at Picabia’s abstract works (like La Source), because I believe my main obstacle right now is creating effective spatial relationships across the picture plane.

The link above shows how I will go about making the fire effect for the beginning. This is one of the parts that I’m really excited for, but also the part I feel could end the most poorly overall because fire can look very fake very easily. While what he shows will work well for the beginning of the fire coming into view, I will need to adjust the base of the fire for the later parts, so it can be large enough to basically engulf an entire corner of the wall. In addition, I’m going to try to make a bit of a longer loop to try to make it less noticeable.

I have been doing cover design research, trying to figure out the best way to convey the emotion and setting of the story. The pixys live in trees with fragile bridges running between them. Cassie and I want to incorporate this in to the cover for our story. I have read through this website: https://designschool.canva.com/how-to-design-book-covers/ that talks about how to design an effective cover and will continue to work on the cover design. ~ Rina

Watching ton and tons of videos
So today I spent some time on Youtube trying to find my classical piece and Korean traditional music piece to use for my final project. I think I’m most likely going to use a more slow and calm Korean piece so I’m currently trying to find a classical piece that has a similar slower beat. At the moment, I’m thinking of using Arirang as my Korean piece since its kind of the unofficial national anthem of Korea, even if it is slightly clichey (but still beautiful!).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OrPafGSoYg This is a link to a performance of Arirang on the haegeum. This style in which this common tune is played is really beautiful but also quite sad at the same time.
