Mvmt 2 completed?!
https://www.noteflight.com/scores/view/3d0370b60378674e263ee9c07d4d51e139aaa03e It's pretty much done. Feedback is greatly appreciated! So, how did I do on being angry? Could be angrier indeed... Symbolic things worth noting. look at the motifs. some of them are from the first movement.I gave them all namesred is "dead"- pitches DEAD of course.blue is "resolute"- symbolizes the desire to improve ochre/mustard is "time"- scale degrees ti to me in some important key.magenta is " memory"- symbolizes remembering back to a time before the griefpurple is "no"- every time you see it, it's the character saying "no" symbolizes denial. Green is when something about one of the motifs is off, perhaps the character is lying to themselves (The person that caused me grief is an oboe player, thus the oboe in this piece does more green than the other instruments) cello solo is basically you/ the protagonist/ the thought process e.g measures 100-107 the protagonist starts remembering the past (memory motif) and so the oboe is messing up your resolution.Throughout the piece, you want to be in D minor. The oboe is playing your resolution in the parallel major, making you feel like it's okay. But it's not okay. It's all weird and stuff. I feel like there's a better word than motif for the longer melodic lines. "Themes" perhaps? If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, anything else constructive, please talk to me I'm super glad to talk about my composition!

CPSA 250: Individual Capstone Research Practicum Learning Agreement
Name: Sarah Kim
Advisor: Harold Burgess
Weekly Meeting Time: Wednesdays 5:00-5:50 PM
Purpose/Mission Statement: Put this in the form of a few sentences about what you hope to accomplish this semester. What will the end result of your project be? What will you learn or gain from the experience? Do you have other goals?
My goal for this project is to prepare and perform a Sophomore Violin Recital.  After this project, I would have learned how navigate the recital booking software for the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, three new complete pieces, how to collaborate with fellow music colleagues in the recital preparation process, and how to order catering for an estimated audience size.  Finally, by receiving feedback from important music faculty and music major colleagues, I would have the opportunity to learn the mistakes from this experience, and to ultimately better my performance energy for future recitals.
Learning Objectives:
These are more specific than the mission statement. Be sure your objectives are clearly stated and respond to what you expect to do, learn, and experience as a result this project. Please list at least three. These should scaffold toward your final project.
I will reserve the Leah Smith Recital and Lecture Hall for the performance and the Student Lounge for the reception.
I will plan a recital program in consultation with my private teacher, Dr. Stern, and my capstone faculty advisor, Harold Burgess.
I will learn the following three new pieces:
Johann Sebastian Bach Sonata no. 1 in g minor
Jean Sibelius Violin Concerto
Josef Suk 4 Pieces for Violin and Piano.
I will prepare a 30 minute reception taking place after the recital, with light refreshments.
Workshop Process:
How will you complete the project? What research or preliminary work is required? What materials will you need? What steps will you take to create the finished project? How will you perform or present your work?
How will you document your work and research in your process binder/notebook?
I will complete this project over a span of three months, January through March, in order to appropriately prepare the repertoire and organize the logistics of the concert.  The preliminary work of booking the recital hall and reception area, as well as the planning of repertoire was completed before the start of the new year to ensure maximum time for solely music practice and preparation.  In order to finish the project, I plan to prepare the assigned repertoire, perform the recital, and hold the post-performance reception.  This project will be performed on April 5th at 7:30 PM in Leah Smith Hall.
I will document my work and research in my process binder by posting audio and video clips on my Tumblr page.  These clips will show the gradual evolution of the music preparation process, from sight-reading the music to the final performance.
Resources:
Please include a list of resources you have used/may use in the planning and execution of your project. You may include books, websites, music, video, personal communication, etc.
Repertoire Recordings:

I finally got to Studio A in STAMP and had a great time. I usually never know what to paint, and it took me a while but this design finally jumped out in my head. I started with the purple blobs in the corner and worked my way down the page, then added the blue sky background. As I finished adding the clouds, which I was adding in random places, I realized that I had created a sort of depth to the picture. The green and yellow line seem to bring a dimensionality to the piece as well, creating a solid foreground and allowing the clouds to remain in the background of the picture. I honestly don’t think that I would have even considered adding this sort of abstract dimensionality to my painting had I not been in the CPSA mural making workshop freshman year. It made me think about painting in a different way and exposed me to different techniques and painting styles. However, I never finish paintings so I hope to finish it soon while applying what I learned last year. Overall, I think this free paint time at Studio .  A kind of gave me an approach that I can apply to my capstone project, because right now I think that I am overthinking my process. All in all this workshop was very beneficial, and great practice, allowing me to be better prepared for my capstone.

CPSA Process Progress Reflection
After looking through everyones pages, I find it really interesting how different each of our capstones are. If I were to make this more personal, I feel as if they all capture us as people and who we are as artists. I can clearly see the personality and talents of my peers through what they’ve shown. Speaking of talent, it’s just so crazy how I have the honor to share a class with such amazing artists of all mediums! Aren’t they just amazing???
It was nice getting feedback from my group members as well. Because they had questions with our presentation, I want to make it clear that we’ll be showing both a projection of our video (shows the BTS scenes action of our capstone) and a table holding the physical aspects of our capstone (i.e. my watercolor paintings and Merissa’s photography).

CPSA 250: College Park Arts Scholars Capstone: Solo Project, Spring 2017
Purpose/Mission Statement: I will be conducting a research art project on the history and evolution of ancient Greek pottery from the years 1000-300 B.C.E. Using this research I will create replica ancient Greek pots that display the style and technique that was used back in history.
Learning Objectives:
I will research and learn about the technique, style, and design of ancient Greek pottery from 1000-300 B.C.E. and group it into major categories.
I will create drawings and sketches that illustrate the process of designing and creating the Greek pots.
I will enhance my current ceramics skills by creating 6 (or more) models of Greek pots using some pottery techniques that would have been done back then.
Workshop Process:
I will be conducting research on the Protogeometric, Geometric, Orientalizing, Red-figure, Black-figure, and White Ground styles of ancient Greek pottery. I will learn the unique characteristics of the styles and the process by which they would have been made. I will then throw modern day pots that will embody the aspects of the different styles. I will be doing pencil sketches to plan out the pottery, and then I will make the models out of clay using various ceramics tools. My work will be displayed with descriptions and some of the planning illustrations to show the process.
My planning work will be documented through sketches and descriptions in my process binder. I will also photographically document the process of making the pottery at different stages.

Learning Agreement
CPSA 250: College Park Arts Scholars Capstone: Solo Project, Spring 2018
 Name: Vince De Guzman
 Advisor: Harold
Weekly Meeting Time: 12:20 pm
Purpose/Mission Statement: Put this in the form of a few sentences about what you hope to accomplish this semester. What will the end result of your project be? What will you learn or gain from the experience? Do you have other goals?
This semester I hope to accomplish something I have never done before. I have no experience with the visual arts or with programming myself with no direction. I want to create an android app that combines these different passions of mine, art and programming. The result is an app where people can create different emojis to use in messaging and texting. I will learn the difficulties of creating both art and programming as these two skills have different difficulties to them. I would also like to publish this app to the app store and maybe improve upon it in the future.
 Learning Objectives:
These are more specific than the mission statement. Be sure your objectives are clearly stated and respond to what you expect to do, learn, and experience as a result this project. Please list at least three. These should scaffold toward your final project.
Learn how to create an     android app
Have a finished product at     Arts Fest with a demonstration and if people want to they can download it     on their own android phone
Learn different methods to     create pixel art
I want to experience the     final product coming together displaying my passions, the arts and     programming
 Workshop Process:
How will you complete the project? What research or preliminary work is required? What materials will you need? What steps will you take to create the finished project? How will you perform or present your work?
How will you document your work and research in your process binder/notebook?
I will complete the project by first familiarizing myself with the software I’m using, Android Studio. I will go through many tutorials and create the UI for my project. Afterwards, I will focus on creating my own pixel art emojis drawing inspiration from many different artists and the way they used pixel art to capture different emotions. Finally, I will combine both the UI and my art style to create a finished product. At Arts Fest I want to have a downloadable app, so people can download the app if they want to, but I would also have my laptop showcasing the app and the code if people are interested in that. In my process binder, I will show all my inspiration and weekly updates on the state of the project, whether it is improving the UI or drawing different emojis.

Advising Meeting #2
CPSA250:                       Conference Report
Fill this form out in its entirety & submit it via email to all three of the Arts Scholars faculty (Jess, Harold, and Bimbola) within 48 hours of your conference. Copy this information over to your Scholars Tumblr site as well (tagged as CPSA Capstone Advising). Failure to submit this form on time will result in losing half the points for the meeting process!
NAME: Briley Hebner
ADVISOR: Bimbola
MEETING DATE & TIME: Wednesday April 11th, 2018 @ 3pm
In 3-4 sentences, please describe what was discussed during your meeting.
We talked about my place in the project and how much I have accumulated through the interviews/google survey and what I needed to do before Arts Fest.  Because I have been so busy the project is not what I originally intended, but I am beginning the process of painting and executing the visual themes. Bimbola told me that the most important thing now is to just work hard and paint until I have a product that I am proud of, and to not be constrained to a specific number of paintings in my head.
In 3-4 sentences, please explain what the next steps you will take with your project will be.
Looking ahead, I only have about a week before ArtsFest and I need to continue painting and forming a series of visual pieces that represent the themes from the google survey. Then I need to form and edit my artist statement and labels and submit those online by the 25th. Because I am not doing a poster I need to practice an outline of information that I want to talk about when I show my work so that people can see the research that I did beyond the paintings.

Update 3/16
After mapping out my first movement in an attempt to try to get the second movement together, I’ve begun typing up notes and analysis for my first movement in order to help me explain and present my piece at Artsfest.
I used three motifs/themes in the first movement and I’m going to also use three motifs in the second one. These motifs tend to be puns, something symbolic or something that just sounds good. My pun motifs, which I am very proud of, include the notes “DEAD” and a series of notes that range from scale degrees 7 up to the minor 3, which in solfege syllables is “ti” (7) up to “me” (3) and spells “time.”
~
Today is the Thursday before spring break and all of my classes have been canceled. I still have my rehearsal with my chamber group, and I’m going to ask them to play some parts for me. I’m also going to get my other friends to record some parts for me.
~
I’m currently trying to upload recordings of my composition process to my Tumblr but it doesn’t seem to be compatible. (tumblr’s asking for a link, but my recording is an mp4) Thus I’m writing text.
A way to help you brainstorm is to just play freely for 15 minutes. It’s okay and even good to make accidents. In fact, most of my accidents lead to really cool ideas. I listen to these recordings and use my aural dictation skills to figure out what notes I was playing.
Overall this is a pretty time consuming process, but I enjoy it and am very determined to get it completed. I’m looking forward to a productive Spring Break!

PRACTICING USING PHOTOSHOP (02/14/19) - For my Capstone Project, I’m planning on creating portraits of each of the interviewees participating in my project that reflect some of the main themes discussed in their interviews. To do this, I will be using Photoshop and other art mediums to edit the portraits I take of each interviewee. Since I’ve never really used Photoshop before, I experimented with the program by creating this composition. Through this endeavor, I learned a lot about how to use Photoshop to edit photos, especially photos of people. I especially liked the use of overlays to add texture to her face, and the use of various filters or tools to edit the lighting in the photo. These are tools that I will likely use in the final products of my Capstone Project. I hope to build on these skills as I begin taking and editing the photos for my project.

CPSA CAPSTONE ADVISING(Late)
In 3-4 sentences, please describe what was discussed during your meeting.
We discussed how to revise my learning agreement. We also discussed how I could structure my plan of how the videos will be laid out considering I really didn't have much of an idea of how I was going to do that. On top of those things, we discussed the possibility of using tools(programs) that the University provides to its students in order to complete my project.
In 3-4 sentences, please explain what the next steps you will take with your project will be.
I will first be recording the raw footage and audio for my videos. Then I will be editing the videos down to a length that I would like them to be. Then I will be doing the voice overs to the videos.
Please use the space below to indicate any further questions, concerns, or confusions that were NOT addressed during the meeting.

Name: Michelle Chan
Advisor: Montse
Weekly Meeting Time: 5:00-5:50pm Wednesday
Purpose/Mission Statement: Put this in the form of a few sentences about what you hope to accomplish this semester. What will the end result of your project be? What will you learn or gain from the experience? Do you have other goals?
I hope to learn how to animate in 2D in a frame by frame style. The end result will be a 5-10 minute animated short with background music. There will at least be one scene finished about Moira and Ander meeting, defeating a dragon corpse, and setting off on an adventure to find a baby dragon. I will have learned how to work collaboratively and on a long term project.
Learning Objectives: These are more specific than the mission statement. Be sure your objectives are clearly stated and respond to what you expect to do, learn, and experience as a result this project. Please list at least three. These should scaffold toward your final project.
I will learn how to storyboard scenes so they are clear in conveying the story.
I will draw those storyboards as roughs for the animation, then clean them.
I will learn how to time movements so the actions are fluid and impactful.
I will compose and/or perform background music using instruments or a program.
I hope to convey a story that is meaningful to myself, my partner and the viewers.
I will communicate timely and effectively with my partner so each of us will have somewhat equal parts throughout this process.
Workshop Process:
How will you complete the project? What research or preliminary work is required? What materials will you need? What steps will you take to create the finished project? How will you perform or present your work?
The preliminary work required is finding ideas for settings and objects, learning how to storyboard and animate, and developing the fictional world. I have watched videos to learn about storyboarding and animation. I will finish drawing up the concept art and drawing the storyboards, then share them with my partner for her to draw the backgrounds. Next, we will render the storyboards as roughs and animate them. I will compose and perform music afterwards to match in time with the storyboards. We will present our work on a computer or on screen during ArtsFest.
How will you document your work and research in your process binder/notebook?
I will upload pictures or screenshots of the storyboards, upload music loops, add links to research, and share GIFs and screenshots of the animation process.
Resources:
Please include a list of resources you have used/may use in the planning and execution of your project. You may include books, websites, music, video, personal communication, etc.
previous Arts Scholars member Amy Hao for advice on animating and composing and performing music
lynda.com for learning how to storyboard and animate
youtube.com for the above and examples of animation
Project Timeline: Include dates and deadlines set by the course syllabus, as well as self-imposed benchmarks for what you would like to have done at certain points in the semester.
1/31: Review concepts and project ideas
Brainstorm ideas for settings for scenes and character designs
Consolidate art style and method for animating
2/7: Michelle: Create first storyboard draft and share it

CPSA 250: College Park Arts Scholars Capstone: Solo Project, Spring 2018
Name: Clark Mitchell
Advisor: Harold
Weekly Meeting Time: WED 5pm
Purpose/Mission Statement:
I hope to learn more about writing and producing music, as well as how different factors of a song help contribute to a song’s overall “catchiness.” I plan on releasing a collection of songs that effectively capture different factors of catchiness.
Learning Objectives:
1. I will create a survey to learn more about people’s trends in regards to their own music listening.
2. After gathering survey data, I tend to categorize similarities in people’s music listening, including different factors of catchiness, like overall subject or the production of a song.
3. Learning more about overall factors that help create earworms, I will begin to conceptualize, write, and produce songs that will embody certain characteristics of catchy songs.
4. I will release, as well as promote the project online for people to listen and to enjoy, and analyze any findings for ArtsFest.
Workshop Process:
I want to begin this process by conceptualizing my own music-listening habits. For the past year, I’ve been using a website called last.fm to further track what I listen to, and what music I’m drawn to. I will develop two or more unbiased surveys that track people’s trends with music listening, as well as try to find out what kind of music and what kind of song characteristics they prefer. Having two surveys, instead of one survey, will allow for a more in-depth analysis of what people like when they listen to music. It’s somewhat hard for people to have a sense of what they find catchy in a song, and creating a follow-up survey will help specify further what kind of music catches. I will also research about the psychology of the earworm, and see if that plays any factors in what deems a song catchy. After I analyze what I have found in the surveys, I will begin writing and creating broad concepts for each song. I will self-produce and record every song. When the project feels complete to me, I will release the work online, as well as promote the collection online and offline. I will present this body of work through a presentation at ArtsFest that tracks any broad findings and for people to listen to the project.
