Feel kind of lucky actually. Aaron found that the tire pressure in our right front tire had dropped from 32 to 24. Went right to the Oakland Airport and traded our trusty Prius in for a Honda CRV AWD Hybrid. A much better fit for Aaron!

Our first wine tasting was at Austin Hope. We’d been introduced to this winery by Meroe and Stefan. Hope Family Wines was named “2022 American Winery of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast. We were seated in an outside cabana and man, was it hot! 90 degrees and uncharacteristically humid. We succumbed to using wash clothes dunked in ice water. The wine was as good as we remembered. We are now club members of a fine line of wines.

Our second tasting was at the Dauo Vineyards. The view from the winery’s hilltop overlooking Paso’s vineyards well crafted for flowers gardens was mighty special. We opted to go inside for our tasting ~ the tasting space was spectacular with a backlit marble bar and beams as wide as a redwood tree. Aaron had read about the quality of their food, so we ordered a charcuterie board (Courtney would have awarded an A+) and a chopped salad with pickled golden raisins, feta emulsion, kale, farrow and more. The wines followed suit. We loved (did I say loved?) the Reserve Seven Forty (cab franc forward) and the Estate Cabernet. We did some higher math and realized with the comp of the tasting and some major rationalization, we could join the club and have some beautiful wines in store for special times. YOLO after all. 🥂

Our airbnb is in a typical neighborhood. But wowza did this host create an experience inside! Fresh flowers, champagne and Pellegrino in the fridge, boxes of snacks, a bidet (I think I need one of these!&#!), a towel/robe warmer, oodles of cozy blankets and a private outdoor patio with a breakfast table, couches and a gas fire pit. We’re having a blast using all of the amenities. A much appreciated mid journey break.

So good to have a little down time. We decided to have some snacks and watch “Hit Man.” Lots to talk about with that one 😝.

She obsessively points to the same stat over and over again: In 2022, Democrats lost 44 state legislative seats to Republicans without putting a candidate on the ballot. She vows it won’t happen again.

“I was just in Brunswick County — which is one of the reddest counties in the state that we got — and a guy named Charles Jones, who’s a Black union member, looked at me and said, ‘I’m running for office because I heard you on the radio,’” Clayton says in an interview. “It is working. Just telling people what happened last cycle and saying, ‘We’re not taking it anymore,’ is a battle cry.”

Time To Hand A Few Things Off.  As I approach age 74, realizations come to me at the oddest moments. Most are in dreams, but sometimes during meals, showering, plant pruning, or enjoying a sip of Irish Whiskey on my patio. My bum right foot won’t cooperate, thanks to botched back surgery, and sometimes it trips me up, which instantly reminds me that I need to use my walking stick and that at my age, any fall could be fatal or at least require a hospital visit, and that would bring relatives with grocery store flowers in hand to pay their condolences, and need my wife to sit by my bedside for days, or until I expire with tubes and machines hooked up to my bodily unit. It’s an unpleasant thought. Age tells you there are things you used to do that are not doable now.I used to drive a trusty 2008 Honda CRV that has been a dependable ride since we purchased it new. But, back to the foot thing, I can’t drive a car now, even though I tell my wife MoMo that I can work the accelerator with my cane and break with my left foot. Nope, she won’t buy it, and I did try to drive a few weeks ago, and it was a disaster, so I have embraced her nurse-trained logic. It ain’t happening, dearhearts. So what to do with my small white buddy that’s been sitting in our driveway since last August of 2022?My granddaughter, Maddie, lives in Tulsa and got her driver’s license this morning. So yesterday, MoMo drove our other Honda car, and my neighbor John and me ( John drove, of course) piloted the 2008 Honda to DFW airport to meet up with Maddy and her older sister Lillian and her wee-one at American Airlines Terminal D, so I could hand Maddy the keys and title to my Honda, which is now her Honda. Sometimes it’s hard to accept, but old folks must do the right thing and hand the keys to the car and the future to the young ones.

2021 Was Stodgy

The Great British Bake Off has now made it's way into our home. Truthfully we watched the first two collections on Netflix during our Christmas break. Sad I know. But one vocabulary word that is used often in this show describes how I feel about 2021. Stodgy: some of the material is rather stodgy and top-heavy with facts. If you are in England, it also means heavy, filling, and high in carbohydrates.

I think both definitions accurately describe my 2021 and probably many others for that matter. It was a pretty Stodgy year, and in the words of Paul Hollywood, not my favorite filling.

So in reflecting - I think maybe I should start with the good, cover a few of the bad, and then hit hard some 2022 New Year's resolutions.

So the good:

- Great career year! More to come on this - but this year was great at my job. I was really able to do more and enjoy more there - so there is a definite plus.

- Became a One Car Family. We traded in the family of Fords (before they completely fell apart) and bought our first brand new vehicle - a Honda CRV. And as a result of becoming a one car family ...

- ... I bought an eBike. First to get around town - but I ride it everyday. Well, not now because snow. But I am in the best shape I have ever been. My FCS numbers are GREAT! And I am holding steady at a weight I can manage. Who knew right?

- I built a water garden in my office. What is a water garden you ask? Exactly that, a garden that has water in it. It features a small waterfall, misting pond, bonsai, money trees, bamboo and lilies. You can see it live on my webcam at nerdynate.live.

- Angela. She was amazing this year. From being able to have a great home life in the middle of this pandemic. And killing it at her job at Maine Med. I love her more then I love chocolate cake... and I do love me some chocolate cake.

- My Grandson Knox was born in 2021 & Beau turned 2 this November. #callmepops. I just love them both so much!!

The Bad

- Covid

- Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: Angela was diagnosis with Spinal Stenosis this October. And so our 4th quarter was filled with shots, opioids, muscle relaxers, lidocaine patches, pillows, Yoga, and robot chairs. She is improving, but this one came out of no where and has flip our lives around a bit.

- Social Anxiety: This year I spent 8 weeks in counseling and therapy for social anxiety. It came to me as a big surprise being a huge Extrovert and all. My therapist worked me through exposure therapy and it was great. Seriously all - take care of your mental health. There are tons of resources out there. And it is so important. Best thing I did for myself this year hands down.

Going to end there with the bad... there are more good on the list then bad, so end that segment on a high note.

(Crazy note - while working on this blog, found out that Betty White died at age 99. Suck it 2021. Love you Betty White and will miss you.)

Now for the 2022 New Year's Resolutions:

- Blog more. Funny story - I used to blog all the time, like professional as part of my career. And haven't for years now. I think I would like to change that. Not that I have alot to say, but I think it is a healthy creative outlet for me. Pictures, videos, and maybe some nerdy stuff. Would that be ok to do here? Not that you have a choice, but didn't hurt to ask.

- Make a perfect low fat pie using the skills I have acquired from watching the Great British Bake Off. But Seriously, we bought new pie pans and everything for me to be able to attempt. Stay tuned.

- Spend more time with my Grand children. Because I just love them so much.

- Read self help books. My Son bought me "Winning the War in Your Mind" for Christmas. Going to start there and see what else comes up this year.
