Map of the Internet [Explained]
Transcript Under the Cut
Map of the Internet The IPv4 Space, 2006This chart shows the IP address space on a plane using a fractal mapping which preserves grouping--any consecutive string of IPs will translate to a single, compact, contiguous region on the map. Each of the 256 numbered blocks represents one 8 subnet (containing all IPs that start with that number). The upper left section shows the blocks sold directly to corporations and goverments in the 1990's before the RIRs took over allocation.

My College Courses
In this post, I’ve typed up my full list of college courses organized by Smith’s seven major fields of knowledge (used for Latin Honors). You can also check out my courses page to see them organized by semester.
As an engineering and computer science double major, it was unsurprising that my top categories were Mathematics and Analytical Philosophy {M} and Natual Science {N}. In fact, two-thirds of my credits (120/179) carried either the {M} or the {N} designation. Note that my three UMass computer science courses (marked with asterixis) weren’t technically assigned Latin Honors designations, but I’ve categorized them with an {M} as nearly all Smith computer science majors hold that designation.
While the vast majority of my courses were for one of both of my majors, I am proud to say that I took a total of 50 credits that were completely outside of both majors. Over the course of my time at Smith, I took courses from 13-16 different departments. The exact number depends on if you count psychology or not as I took a course cross-listed between both philosophy and psychology. Furthermore, FYS (first-year seminars) and IDP (inter/extradepartmental) courses fall outside of the set departments so are tricky to count.
Next to each category, I’ve included a percentage that measures the percentage of my credits earned for the given category. Note that the percentages don’t actually sum to 100% as six of my courses held two distinct designations. I’ve marked these courses using the caret and inverted caret symbols.

Calculus math

Calculus math full#
Normally, all courses that are counted towards either the major or minor must be taken for a letter grade.Īn honors project consists of directed reading, investigation and a thesis. A student may petition the department if she wishes credit for any course not on this list.
Calculus math full#
Note that courses that are cross-listed with mathematics and another department (CSC 250, ECO 220, PHI 202, PHI 203, PHI 220, and SDS 292) are counted as mathematics courses and given full credit toward the mathematics major.Generally, such a 4-credit course will be given 2 credits toward the mathematics major. Courses taken outside the department must contain either substantial mathematical content at a level more advanced than MTH 211 and 212 or statistical content at a level more advanced than MTH 220.With the approval of the department, up to 8 of the credits may be satisfied by courses taken outside the mathematics and statistics department. In total, majors must take at least 36 credits among courses numbered at or above 153, with the following exceptions:.An advanced course is a mathematics course at Smith numbered between 310 and 390. Majors are required to take at least one advanced course. Students intending to declare a major after Fall '22 do not have this option and are advised to pursue a MST Major (Mathematical Statistics). Alternatively, students declaring a math major before Fall '22 may focus on statistics students pursuing this track through the major are not required to take a course in algebra but instead must complete MTH 220, MTH 246, MTH 320, and either MTH 291 or MTH 290. The core requirement consists of one course in algebra (MTH 233 or MTH 238) and one course in analysis (MTH 280 or MTH 281). Some of these requirements might be waived for a well-prepared student. The foundation requirement consists of MTH 111, MTH 112, MTH 153, MTH 211, and MTH 212. The mathematics major has a foundation requirement, a core requirement, a depth requirement and a total credit requirement. If you'd like to declare a math major or minor, the first step is to fill out an advisor preference form here. Testing Out of CSC 111
At Smith College, it is possible to place out of introductory classes based on prior knowledge. This is commonly done via AP Exam scores of 4 or 5. Here is a helpful chart on AP Exam Course Equivalencies. While not all AP Exams are accepted (i.e. both computer science exams among others), strong AP scores offer credit, not just placement. In the future, I will be writing about my experience with APs in preparing me for coursework at Smith. Some departments also offer their own placement tests (non-credit bearing). For more information about placement tests at Smith, click here.
With that said, not all of the placement tests are clearly advertised. That gets us to the focus of this blog post. The computer science department offers a placement test to skip Introduction to Computer Science Through Programming (CSC 111) and go straight to Programming With Data Structures (CSC 212). While CSC 111 teaches Python, the placement test covers Java. It is primarily for students who like me, did well on the AP Computer Science A exam and are thus likely prepared to jump right to CSC 212. The test is also appropriate for those with a strong understanding of Python, C, or another declarative language. I became aware of this exam after emailing the CSC 212 professor about which course (CSC 111 or CSC 212) would be the appropriate fit for me. To actually set up the exam, I emailed the chair of the computer science department.
In terms of my background in computer science, in high school, I took three computer science courses. In 9th grade, I learned Python in a semester-long introductory course. In 10th grade, I learned Java in AP Computer Science A. In 12th grade, I took a website development course at my local university. In that course, I learned HTML, CSS, and PHP.
Since I hadn’t programmed in a while, I spent the last few weeks relearning Java. For coding practice, I used Codingbat. To review the concepts, I used my old AP prep book. I was introduced to both of these resources back in high school when I was taking AP computer science A. I started my studying by watching a review video that I found on YouTube. From there I read through the entire prep book, took notes, and completed practice problems/ exams. If you enjoy programming, it is worth checking out Project Euler for fun programming problems.
I took the placement test yesterday and was pleased to find that my studying paid off. Due to the Honor Code, I can’t say much about the exam itself. Prior to the exam, I was told by a computer science professor that the placement test was basically an AP practice exam. Other than that, all I knew was that the test was 3 hours long, administered on Moodle, and closed notes/books/computers.
One important thing to emphasize is that I didn’t earn credit. This means that I still have to take a computer science class to fulfill that requirement of my engineering degree. Furthermore, computer science majors who pass the exam still have to take 11 courses despite being exempt from CSC 111.

And then there were none. Drew Brees has now defeated every team in the NFL during his brilliant career. Only Brett Favre and Peyton Manning had accomplished that feat before him. Brees, who completed 73% of his passes for 212 yards without an interception yet again, also threw for his 500th career touchdown pass, hitting Benjamin Watson during the second quarter.
