James Somerset (c. 1741 – after 1772) was an African man and the plaintiff in a pivotal court case that confirmed that slavery was not legal in England and Wales.
He was born in West Africa. He was captured when he was about 8 years old, sold to European slave traders, and transported to the Colony of Virginia where Scottish merchant Charles Stewart bought the child. In 1764, he was taken to Boston, where Stewart had been appointed Receiver General of Customs.
In November 1769, Stewart moved to England, taking him along to serve him in his residence in London. He was baptized on February 10, 1771, at the Church of St Andrew, Holborn, with Thomas Walkin, Elizabeth Cade, and John Marlow acting as his godparents. Perhaps because baptism was often associated with manumission, he refused to continue serving Stewart and left him. He lived in freedom for several months, but in November 1771 he was kidnapped and forced aboard the Ann and Mary, captained by John Knowles, to be transported to Jamaica and sold.
His godparents, abolitionists, filed a Habeas corpus case with the courts and enlisted Granville Sharp to aid him. The case, Somerset v Stewart, saw powerful interests arguing on both sides, as it challenged the legal basis of slavery in England and Wales. On June 22, 1772, the judge, Lord Mansfield, found in favor of him. Although Mansfield had meant for the ruling to be narrowly construed, it was popularly taken to confirm that slavery was outlawed in England and Wales. He appears to have adopted the broader interpretation and wrote to at least one enslaved person encouraging them to desert their master. Nothing is known of him after 1772. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Mariners Hang On To Beat Twins.
Mariners 8 Twins 7 W-Miller (7-3) L-Ryan (9-7) SV-Munoz (2)
The Minnesota Twins bats have been red hot to start the second half, but the pitching has slumped a bit. The team looked for the series win on a hot day at Target Field this afternoon. The Mariners struck first in the first inning as Julio Rodriguez led-off with a double to right. Teoscar Hernandez singled him home and Seattle had the lead before Minnesota grabbed a bat. The Mariners got back to work in the second as Dylan Moore smoked a Joe Ryan fastball out to left for a solo homer. Julio Rodriguez added a solo blast in the third and the Mariners had a three-run lead. The Twins would find some offense in the bottom of the third when Christian Vazquez knocked a Bryce Miller fastball out to left for a solo homer. Later in the inning, Eddie Julien lined a slider out to left and the Twins were within a run after three frames. The Mariners bounced back as Tom Murphy started the fourth with a double and Cade Marlowe walked. Dylan Moore singled and Kolten Wong plated a run with a base hit to right. Seattle had a 4-2 lead that didn’t last long. Matt Wallner drilled a Bryce Miiller fastball out to right for a solo homer as the Twins inched within a run. The Mariners continued to hit in the fifth as Ty France and Cade Marlowe walked. Dylan Moore belted a Jordan Balazovic offering out to left for a three-run homer and the Mariners led 7-3. Seattle added one more run in the sixth as Julio Rodriguez doubled and Eugenio Suarez singled to right. The M’s had an 8-3 lead, but the Twins would not give up. Matt Wallner knocked a Bryce Miller slider out to left for a solo homer. Trevor Larnach doubled and Kyle Farmer singled him in. Joey Gallo doubled home a run and Christian Vazquez hit a run-scoring single to right. The Twins got within a run after six innings of play. The bullpens settled down and the Twins had a chance in the ninth. Christian Vazquez led-off with a single and pinch-runner Michael Taylor eached second base. Andres Munoz retired the final three batters to end the game and the Mariners took the series today.
-Final Thoughts- Joe Ryan didn’t have his best stuff today and it showed. He lasted 3 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Jordan Balazovic gave up three runs over 1 1/3 innings and Josh Winder saved the bullpen with four strikeouts over four innings. Christian Vazquez led the way with three hits on the day. Matt Wallner, Trevor Larnach, and Kyle Farmer had two hits each. The Twins hit 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. The Twins have tomorrow off before heading to Kansas City for a weekend series. Sonny Gray faces Brady Singer in Game 1 on Friday night.
