Harbor Herald Special Report: Rocking on the High Seas!

Dear Readers,

It is with no small amount of glee that your faithful reporter, Idanwyn Lluanswys, is switching things up next moon. Yes, instead of attending a lovely venue that is safely located on land, yours truly will be hosting a veritable A-list of performers on her own ship, the Nixie!  I would ask you to pinch me, but, aside from that being entirely impractical, it is also unnecessary, as I am fully aware that this particular dream is quite real. 

After following up on a rumor published in this very paper, myself and my crew were hired by one Martin Freepaw to host a different sort of concert on our different sort of ship. Though I could wax poetic about this for many more ilms of this column, I will spare you all and instead cut to the nitty-gritty! Hope to see you there, me lovelies!

WHO: A fine assortment of various performing artists, whose names are currently being withheld as they do not wish to draw the attention of The Law!

WHAT: A concert thrown by questionable musicians paid for by the questionably deep gilpurse of Da Family (who may or may not also be questionable, that is not up to this reporter to say)!

WHEN: Saturday, November 14th, starting at 8PM EST.

WHERE: The Rogue Wave Stage on board the Nixie, a curious galleon that will be anchored at a small, unassuming isle in neutral waters for this event. Guests will be ferried in from Limsa Lominsa, or those who are aetherically inclined may use the ship’s aetheryte. ((OOC, we’ll just be using Mist, Ward 14, Plot 6 on the Mateus server, but that’s how you’ll be getting there IC!))

WHY: It’s music! There will be delicious food provided by yours truly, and excellent bar service provided by Caelholdt Kavanagh of the Still and Strings. The Still & Strings Performer Focus: Nico’to Taatalir! A Harbor Herald Exclusive!

Hello once again, dear readers! Your faithful (if somewhat tardy) reporter, Idanwyn Lluanswys, taking to the Herald’s pages once again to report on the most recent show I attended at the Still & Strings! This venue has swiftly become one of my favorites; its location deep within the Black Shroud provides just the sort of getaway one who spends most of her life on the open seas occasionally craves, and the proprietor, Caelholdt Kavanagh, crafts some of the finest drinks I have ever had the pleasure to overindulge in. To add to that, their stage, which I think of as an upscale dive bar, is often host to some of Eorzea’s finest, most innovative performers, and this past Friday’s show was no exception.

There was no shortage of well-timed stage effects, soaring solos, and heartfelt headbangers, all of which were as much fun to dance along with as they were to listen to. For this article, lovely readers, yours truly decided to focus on one of the performers for more of a close-up after the show. I was originally intending to do your standard interview with the star, a classic back-and-forth. However, just like his act, Nico’to Taatalir brought the unexpected in the form of two of his dearest companions, U’viloh Talos and Tehro’to Tzaraaki; over drinks and smokes, the trio filled the night with more of an impression of the performer than a cut and dry interview could provide.

Nico’to Taatalir credits much of his performance to those he calls near and dear, and it is not hard to see why; the support for their friend was obvious, even as they sought to make sure it didn’t all go to his head. The Keeper’s lyrical, pitch-perfect voice and effortless musical runs are the product of that perfect marriage of skill and swagger; while on stage, it seems rather intimidating, but off-stage, it is clear that he takes great joy in sharing music with others.

Some of it may have to do with the raw, fearless earnestness of his lyrics. His first number railed against the Monetarists, something this reporter is always a fan of doing. However, he, like all the finest performers, sang from the bottom of his soul about his personal losses; those of his clan, reliance on substances, and feeling disenfranchised. With the crowd buzzing and sharing in with his rage, his second and final number was gentler, yet no less heartfelt. He wrapped the crowd around his lyrics, acknowledging how the current, tumultuous times have us feeling like we’re twisting in the wind. Still, his song spoke of love, and how “heaven’s a mindset away” gave us the promise of being able to steal away with someone special to forget our woes for a time.

Indeed, after his songs, this reporter was left feeling reinvigorated and determined. It was a pleasure to ask questions, be interrupted many times, and ultimately surrender to the spirit of the night that Nico’to, U’viloh, and Tehro’to offered. There were many laughs, the sense of a deep and long-abiding community, and taking this performance for what it was; an offering of a quiet revolution started deep in the heart that could only be contained in energetic song.
